Three of us hit Sailor Hagar's brew pub on a Saturday evening for dinner and beers. Haven't been there for years. It was sunny but a bit chilly for the patio but we had our choice of window tables inside. Great view of Vancouver and the harbour.
We tried most of their craft brews over a calamari starter, the Bitter and Nut Brown ale were our favorites. Calamari was good, crisp in a tempura batter with some veggies thrown in. I had the rustic chorizo and asiago pizza which was good but could have used a minute more in the oven to get a crisper bottom crust. Three fish tacos with crispy fish and slaw was another good choice. The beef dip was huge, with a bowl of excellent crispy fries. Overall the food and service was excellent and we had a great boys dinner. And it was a short walk downhill to the quay to catch a cab home.
I have been going here for years, when I want to relax, meet with friends or watch sporting events & eat, this is the spot.
I had their chicken fingers with fries, with a pepsi, and my food came quickly, very hot and fresh. My meal came to $13.00 plus tip, which isn't bad for lunch and to watch the Olympics.
I find their cheese burgers, roastbeef dip, steak to large nancho's that friends need to share, are some of the menu items I've tried. The food I find is constantly good, this is why I come here.
I like the service, friendly and I like their food when I go there to have lunch.
I sure wish pubs would be more innovative with their menus. Hagar's has a wonderful location and view....food is just average. Their wit ale was good though. They've really cut back on the number of microbrews that they offer.
We went on Tues. for birthday beers & something to eat. The beer was OK, the service was basis. There appeared to be only one waitress serving a whole pub full of customers, so as a consequence service was slow. The lass in question was a little inexperienced too, but was trying hard.
The food was basic too. I would have liked the Guinness & steak pie, but this I was told had sold out, so I opted for the NY steak sandwich / burger. When the food came the (medium-rare) steak was tepid, while the chips (fries) & onion rings were hot, suggesting the steak had been sitting around waiting to be served. I sent the meal back to be re-heated & was rewarded with a few extra chips. However, the steak tasted as if it had been grilled on a recently sanitised hot plate. mmm ! Suspicious ! Not great. The battered onion rings were oily & basic.
Nevertheless, the pub was very popular. Most people had come to watch the hockey, the loud coverage of which made conversation difficult.
The place is conveniently located in Lower Lonsdale, has an affordable range of menu items, but whilst the beer & alcoholic beverages were OK, the standard of the food is sadly lacking.
Not living in North Van, we don't get to go to Sailor Hagar's that often, but it's usually a pleasant experience when we do. The place is large and seems quite popular with the locals.
They double as a brew pub, so they have a decent selection of their own beer on tap, which is typically quite good. They also have a large selection of imported beer on tap.
The food is typically quite good. We've seen several incarnations of the menu in the last few years, and most of what we've tried turned out quite well. The portions are large and flavorful. Their specials on the weekends are great value for money.
So what could be better then? Service, unfortunately, is hit and miss. Depending on who ends up waiting on your table you could be receiving stellar service (from the lady working the bar- probably the owner) or extremely poor service. One time while seating on the patio we ordered a second round of beer as our empty glasses were taken away and food brought to the table. We didn't see our second round until we were done eating, some 20 minutes later, and that only after reminding the waitress.
Despite the service issues though, the place is definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.
I was there for a casual Friday for a few drinks and I must say the service was terrible and the food was worst. I wasn't expecting much as we decided to go because we were in the area. The waitress was not attentive and very unprofessional. The nachos were soggy and the beer was served in what I considered a dirty pitcher. All in all a must miss. Don't bother with this place.
Sailor Hagar's has a great view and is spacious and well lit inside. The service was average.
Despite this, the food has been consistently a disappointment. The chicken ranch pizza was terrible. It was just a thin crust with a few pieces of chicken and a few mushrooms, not much flavour. The pesto chicken burger was served on a very low quality bun which turned soggy quickly. The shephard's pie was under spiced and lacked overall floavour. Compared to some of other pubs that serve excellent food in the area, we were very disappointed.
I don't know how this place can be rated a 3 as how pubs go. The staff is amazing and the food is top notch as far as variety in a Pub setting. Mondays you can go in and have a 6 oz very tender sirloirn steak sandwich for 4.95 which is a great deal. The cooks go the extra mile.
The first time in there I ordered a spanish coffee without whip cream and pitchers of black label. A few days later when I went back, the waitress remembered everything! Even the no whip cream which I forgot to ask for.
All and all one of the best places to go in Vancouver to watch the game or just to hang out and shoot a game of pool. A bonus for you smokers is there is a heated patio outback where you can smoke, and a tv also!
I didn't rate everything a 5 only because well I rarely ever give full credit!
