Disappointing demise

When the owners re-opened this summer we decide to give them a try, as we live across the street.

Initially, the sushi seemed fresh and it was great that you could order a little curry and sushi at the same place. HOWEVER, in the fall there " cook" went back home, the menu has changed and the increased prices have remained.

Lunch for two people ( seriously, not a lot of food) $ 35.00, just too much, even for a buffet and sadly the quality of food has deteriorated.

We went today because of the snow, but we won't go back... Honjin is down the street and a much better experience.

Malaysian Fast Food

I was extremely dissapointed with the quality of food served here.
I have always been a big fan of Malaysian food, however this place was a dissapointment.
Two of the items we ordered were classic dishes...beef rendang and satai. The satai was over-cooked and the rendang had virtually no gravy(extremely dry.)
The spring-rolls were quite greasy as well. Our server was relatively friendly, however, in the future we will visit our other stand-bys, as the quality for your dollar just isn't there.

Since it's reno's it looks like they really dont have a handle on things..Unpredictable as hell...we went there for the Indonesian (Tropica rip) ..they decided to close it down for lunch / dinner but offer some of the stuff with all u can eat!

The food quality has definitely gone down but, the service OMG..the portly captain has a major attitude problem.

Went there yesterday for lunch...they had sold the restaurant out so they opened the section that had been closed all along.

They just couldnt keep up with the patrons. Whne we complained the dude (mentioned above) behaved as though they were doing us a favour allowing us in!!

Well try it of you have nowhere else to go!!

Mrs C and I went with some friends to eat a little Malaysian on the North Shore. We wanted to try this place since the fission that divided it from the sushi restaurant that was there previously. The sushi place is still there, but now half the space is Pepper Leaf. The same guy owns both, and we were told you can actually order from both restaurants. That was a neat idea. You get into the restaurants by the same door. The ambience seemed nice enough, and the w/c which is shared with the sushi place was clean. Plus they have parking underneath so you don’t have to search for a place to put the car.

We had roti to start which was very good, and then had beef curry, which was only okay followed by clams in coconut sauce that was satisfactory, and minced pork with eggplant which was outstanding.

Things got ugly about halfway through the meal when Mrs. C made a little yelp of distaste. I looked over and there was a cockroach scurrying across the table. “Maybe he wants to taste the curry”, I thought. Just then my spouse used her lightning fast reflexes to smash the little critter into oblivion. We showed the remains to the server who apologized and took the body away. We were given a 15% discount, free dessert, and assurances that a pest control expert was to be alerted, but I kept wondering if any of the cadre of bugs had managed to get into the food while in the kitchen.

I think I will take my chances elsewhere.

I enjoyed my visit to Pepper Leaf. All three of our dishes -- eggplant, beef curry, and Indonesian spring rolls -- were excellent. Room was comfortable, service was friendly, and the meal was good value for money. I'll be back.

I like to have people from the country cook the food. I don't like Japanese restaurants owned by Koreans, Mexican restaurants run by Arabs, etc... I've travelled to Indonesia and Malaysia and thought the food was quite good, but the restaurant is owned by dudes from Hong Kong. Hong Kong is not Malaysia, not even close. The decor looks a little weird but it's the food that matters.

Rare new flavours in a decent room

Several visits to this relatively new restaurant have all been good. We keep going back to try yet another unusual but flavourful dish. Our favourite is the house specialty eggplant.

The service fast and efficient in the team style. Prices are a little higher than Chinese restaurants in this area. The room and furniture are nice but a little odd. Fortunately, they took a step up in class by removing the television over the bar after the first couple of weeks.

Worth a try.

My husband & I visited the Pepper Leaf after his sister told us about it. It's not a huge place and on the week-night we visited (around 5:30) there were 4 tables already occupied. During our meal 3 other groups arrived & I noticed at least 3 people come & pick up take-out order.

We were impressed with the variety of dishes offered. I can't even remember the names of everything we had BUT 1 was shrimp cakes (YUM!!), sweetbread? (Like naan & extremely good), a lamb curry and 2 additional dishes that I can't recall. All of the food was delicious.

The service was friendly & fast but we certainly didn't feel we were being rushed. We'll definitely be back & will tell our friends.

Went to the Pepper Leaf Restaurant last night with the fam for Father's Day. We were seated promptly by the host in the quaint, clean, cozy restaurant.

We enjoyed some roti and chicken satay to start. The curry sauce that came with the roti was spicy and a little sweet, a perfect accompaniment to the hot, fluffy roti. Chicken skewers were tender and served with a nice peanut sauce. Dry curry cod, balakang, malay fried chicken, and pad thai were all delicious too. Very well flavoured food and all the dishes were cooked to perfection

Service was friendly and the servers were very helpful in their recommendations.

We all left with full tummies and Dad was happy with his choice of restaurant for Father's Day. We will definitely be back!
