Help! Restaurant looking for an identity...

We have pleasant memories of a couple of nice meals at their old location on Marine Drive so when we heard they had moved closer to where we live we naturally wanted to try it.

We walked in without a reso around 8 pm on a Friday night and the restaurant was less than half full. It's a very chic room and they obviously spared no expense designing a fab open kitchen and choosing very vogue colours, fixtures and furnishings.

Unfortunately that's where the accolades end. We didn't see any connection between this new Moustache Cafe and the old one in the charming yellow house. Therefore, although fully intending to have dinner we decided to start with appetizers and drinks first. There were about 8 appies to choose from, I chose carpaccio and my sweetie ordered gravlax. The waiter returned to say they were out of carpaccio. It was hard pressed to find anything else that appealed to me but I went with the cold duck appetizer.

The gravlax was so salty and dry (over cured) my hubby couldn't eat it. I can't recall the last time he ever sent a dish back, but he did this time. My duck appetizer had a fatty, stale taste and completely unimaginative. The only reason I ate it was because it was only 2 bites big and it took me 2 bites to believe that I wasn't tasting anything at all. The only redeeming part is that the chef came over and talked to us about the gravlax and agreed that it was over cured. Anyway, we ended up leaving and going around the corner to Fishworks for oysters, vodka martinis and a plate of pasta.

Moustache Cafe is like a good looking guy who turns your head when he walks by but makes you cringe when he opens his mouth. We probably won't go back for dinner but might try them for lunch.

Great North Shore Spot

Always been a great spot. Went back again after a few years of not visiting and really enjoyed it. Good food, nice server and nice atmosphere. Food came fast, everything was hot and nicely plated. Never felt rushed and had a super fun night.

Certainly a great option for those looking to stay on the Shore. Try it out if you haven't been.

Excellent Room - Excellent Food

This is one of the better restaurants on the North Shore. It has a large open kitchen near the front with bar style seating and small tables. The middle and rear provide space for fine dining.

We arrived early one week night and were the first people seated in the back room. Tables are not crowded, generous in size with comfortable seating. Bold art brings life to the simple decor and a burning fireplace added atmosphere.

We chose one starter from the menu and another from the day's specials. Excellent flavour combinations. Our main courses included roast pork and herbed lamb. Both were creatively presented and cooked to perfection.

They offer a good wine selection with a number of both reds and whites available by the glass or half litre.

Service was prompt and professional. Not inexpensive but the quality of ingredients and sophistication of preparation and presentation results in a solid dining experience.

Moustache is great to bring your date to, it is cozy, comfortable with dim lights and antique-feel. The lamb loin was terrific~ It is not a fine dining restaurant so dont expect a lot of servers, it is rather an unique little place to enjoy food.

Dissapointed with Dine-out

I recently tried the Moustache Cafe with a party of others for the Dine out Vancouver in their new location. I had eaten at the previous location a number of times before with reason to return.
On this occasion, I have to say we were sadly dissapointed with our experience. Our server did not seem interested, besides taking our order and having our food delivered. Upon arrival we ordered still and sparkling water to our table, during the course of our meal neither were offered to be refilled. We had wine, which we had to request to order further bottles.
The food was good, though some of the entree portions seemed to be smaller sized due to the dine out menu. More than a few in our party went home hungry.
We lingered over dessert and coffee, and to finish our wine. When we got up to leave, our server made an unnecessary comment of the length of time we were there and that we seemed to have a lot to talk about.
I have to say I was not impressed on this occasion, and with so many options for good meals I would not hurry to recommend or return to the Moustache Cafe.

Brilliant!

I showed up without a reservation on a Thursday night and I got a wonderful seat. The lights were dimmed beautifully and it was nice and quiet. My girlfriend and I each ordered a different special - I had duck and she had trout and we each agreed it was likely the best we've ever had.

The food took about 20 minutes or so but that's because it's cooked fresh - the waitress checked up on us and brought bread to us twice to keep us happy while waiting - it was kind and welcomed but unnecessary.

I will definitely go again. Perfect for a date! Just eat, have some wine, and go for a walk down at the quay.

Over-rated

Bah this place is so over-rated and way overpriced.

We booked the back private room in their new location and it was noisy as hell . This places tries to be upscale (mostly with their prices) but lacks the right 'ingredients'.

Looking for a nice restaurant, move on . This is strike two for them from me, won't be going back .

Friendly Fine Dining

The food that Geoff Lundlow creates is fantastic. Some of the dishes forces the average person (like me) out of their comfort zone, like elk or duck. It was well worth it. It's service with a smile. Super friendly ... and Geoff the chef and owner, will come out to visit the odd table and see how they are doing. Nice touch! I'd go back.

relaxingly decadent

To think I have driven past this little gem for years! Last week's dinner at the Moustache Cafe was decadently succulent with an ambiance that made me feel right at home. I would highly recommend the Mushroom appetizer and Bison steak if you want to experience the feel and taste of earthy rich flavors offset by a French Pinot Noir. The service was great, the hostess delightful, and Geoff happily prepared the delicious civachie I requested when I made reservations. I was delighted to discover Geoff's cooking classes and have already registered for one. A dining experience I look forward to repeating as a regular patron. I have many dishes on the menu yet to relish!
