We've tried this place about 8 times now, and had one okay experience, and the rest were pretty awful.
Why?
- extra fishy, bad tasting fish
- lots of grissle in the fish
- food seems to be loaded with salt and MSG (that weird chemically salty taste, sometimes appears as very ultrafine white powder on the food - gross)
- sushi often falling apart, construction of rolls seems hurried
- sushi just doesn't taste very good most of the time
- very unclean bathrooms with doors that don't lock
Disappointing place given its great, central location in the new Lynn Valley Center area.
Why are the restaurants in LV Center so bad? Sigh.
We ordered from Mountain Sushi tonight, surprised to see that they deliver for free within 4km. It arrived within the specific 30 minutes and we were ready to dig in.
I had miso soup and gomaae to start. The miso soup was quite good with an ample amount of tofu. I hate when they skimp on the tofu... why do some places do that? The gomaae was decent... the sesame sauce could have had a little more zing to it but no complaints.
For the rolls I had the yam tempura and salmon tumpura roll. No skimpy yam roll here - big chunks of yam fried perfectly. The salmon tempura roll was good too... no complaints.
The boy had ebi sunomono, house roll, and some other type of special roll. He didn't say much but he seemed happy enough. I thought the house roll and special roll were a bit small for the price but otherwise tasty.
Which brings me to the only downside I think there was. I was surprised to hear that our bill came to about $45. For the amount of food we got, the value just isn't there. Sure, I would eat there again... but I would probably look for their specials instead of willy nilly ordering.
Overall we're happy - just with lighter wallets.
I once ordered Nabeyaki udon, and it was the worst udon I have ever had. Their noodle is very cheap one, and it has egg that was fried in pretty greasy way, with bunch of spinach on top. I love nabeyaki udon, so I ordered it from many places, so I could compare it pretty easily. They shouldn't be selling that kinda udon for that price.
I haven't tried their sushi, but I tried their sashimi. Sashimi is nor bad or good - it's just average. Their oyako don (the rice menu) has way too much rice, but very little meat. And the sauce was not enough, so it tastes like eating plain sushi rice.
Since it was close to my place, I ordered food there from here twice with my friends - and I will not go to this restaurant again. Their service was not bad though ....
