Great local Chinese

We tried Ming's Garden on a whim, and were really glad we did...they are local, in Edgemont Village, but behind the scenes, so to speak. The service was prompt (they told us 45-60 minutes and it was earlier than promised) and the delivery guy super friendly. The food is not greasy, has no MSG and tastes home-cooked instead of mass produced.
They use clean flavors, have great selection and portions are great.

I came here for lunch. The interior is a bit dated, but, looked pretty clean. Clean table tops and what not. I was seated immediately, and was brought a glass of water quickly.

The Lunch Specials Menu had a lot of different options and was a great deal. I had the Pork Fried Rice and the Ginger Beef. The Ginger Beef came out first. It was the Breaded style with sauce. Was very decent. There wasn't much spice to it, but, a very good Ginger beef and was a huge portion. The Fried Rice came out a little later, and was also very good. Lots of pieces of BBQ Pork in it, and was a very big plate of Rice too. Surprising, because the Rice was 6 Bucks!

All in all, a very decent Restaurant. The Price and Value are unreal. The food is pretty good too. I will definately be back and will definately recommend others to come here. I think it's just a great place to eat. It's nothing fancy Chinese food.

A rose amongst the thorns

This restaurant location has had it's fair share of changes over the years. I think a lot of that is the placement of the restaurant. It sits on a slower street in Edgemont village between a Petro Canada and a dry cleaner. It has always remained an Asian type establishment. It is now a Chinese restaurant. I've ordered for home delivery from here on many occasions and they never fail to disappoint. I took my wife and daughter here a month or so ago and now frequent it about once a week. It has amazingly cheap offerings of Dim Sum starting at $2.80 and Lunch specials starting at $3.99. We tried a few lunch specials on our last visit. I highly recommend the deep fried tofu with salt and Pepper. It arrives piping hot with red chilli's adorning every piece. Mmm... I'm in love now. The Won-ton soup has a tasty broth that we actually liked. Usually all we eat is the won tons. The spring rolls are amazing and not even really greasy. The owner/cook/server was so polite and attentive. They appear to do the majority of their business with the delivery crowd so a table is practically guaranteed. Definitely worth the travel to go here!

Must have changed chefs....

I've gone to this restaurant several times over the past year. In the summer and fall of 2009 it was fine--I just get takeout so can't really comment too much on the in-house portion. Reasonably priced, decent food.

But the take-out tonight was absolutely horrible. Undercooked chow mein noodles and sweet and sour pork that had minimal sauce and a soapy taste. The vegetables were OK, but the portion of noodles had increased markedly since my last visit, while the portion of veggies declined. The beef and chicken were tasteless, which is better than soapy but you expect a bit more....I ended up tossing most of it into the garbage. Waste of money. Staff are fine, but try another place would be my advice, until they get someone better back there in the kitchen.

The Best Chinese Food in North Van... and beyond!
By darksoul7 of North Vancouver (2 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, December 6, 2008 - 5:36pm [Dine in]

I have lived in Vancouver for 4 years now, and I have grown to HATE Chinese food due to poor quality and sub-par portions. Since I am originally from Montreal, I know quality when it comes to Chinese food in Canada.

My wife and I decided to give it another try tonight and selected Ming's Garden. I can actually say that I have found my Chinese restaurant. The quality of the food is far beyond any others in North Vancouver and the portions are generous to say the least.

We spend $25 on our order and we still have some in the fridge. The fact that it actually made it to the fridge instead of the trash can shows how good this place is.

My wife ordered the Wonton in Spicy Garlic Sauce, which were beyond delicious, and the Wor Wonton Soup. This is the first Wonton soup were we actually finished the broth. It was full flavoured and absolutely spectacular. I ordered the Sweet and Sour Pork (since that is usually the only thing from Chinese restaurants which will not revisit me in a negative manner) and it was the best I've ever had. I actually felt like I ordered Chinese from a restaurant from Montreal's Chinatown.

All in all, this restaurant has great value, great service (they delivered from a little over 8km away) and it was actually good!

I recommend this to everyone, and if you like spicy, get the Wonton in Spicy Garlic sauce. You will not be disappointed.

Bad Night?
By whitewings of North Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, January 26, 2009 - 3:44pm [Dine in]

Based on the other two reviews, we must have ordered on a bad night. The food was overcooked, and took well over an hour to be delivered (we did take out, and were promised it would be 45 minutes).

The chicken balls and prawns were the greasiest we've ever had, and the "hot and sour" soup was a mix of what looked like left-over veggies thrown in with a base and barbeque sauce (my son is a chef, and that was his determination)

The last straw was the restaurant phoning us well after 10:30pm, when we were all in bed - to verify what we'd given the delivery guy as a tip. Bad enough one call - but 5 minutes later, the SAME PERSON called again, to confirm what my husband told them the first time.

We definitely will not be getting food from here again.
