Memphis Blues Barbeque house features southern comfort food including melt-in-your-mouth ribs. There are several other locations in the Lower Mainland.
I have been there at least 4 times, and found it just under the radar. What I mean by that is not good, but wait, not real bad either. I first had the pulled pork sandwich, the sauce was blah , soury, I didn't like it. So when and if I visit the place now, no sauce please . I prefer a little salt & pepper , a bit too pricey , other wise not bad. Of coarse there is music ( blues ) playing in the back ground, and a few cool posters, but not my favorite pork place.
I've been to this location twice, and I cannot for the life of me, understand why people like their food. I first tried them, when they opened a couple of years ago, didn't like it, but wanted to give them another chance.
I ordered the half slab of ribs, came with coleslaw, fries, cornbread and sauce for my ribs.
The fries were beyond salty and couldn't even begin to describe the taste. I tried the coleslaw, it tasted vinegery, funny purplish colour and didn't like it. I'm at the point worried that the ribs maybe as greasy, as the fries, but lacked flavour & hardly no taste. I didn't like the sauce for the ribs and left after I tried to eat the ribs, but too greasy for me.
I don't think this place is for me, many people like it, but Its all about the hype. As for the price $18.00 with coca cola and its too expensive to go back again.
When you are curious about the wings, and you ask the disheveled drone taking your order how they are, and he tells you he doesn't eat there, then you've got the restaurant owner's blues...
What followed was the loveless special: pulled pork on a bun with a heap of shredded (vs. pulled) pork piled on a cold, dry bun and covered in a barbecue sauce that was more Kraft than hand-crafted. The fries, herbed with garlic salt, was good, but James Brown didn't get soulful about french fries, and this is a place trying to invoke the South, right? What else just wasn't right? A piece of cornbread the size of triscuits piled three high on my plate. Cornbread, as important to southern barbecue as the saxophone is to the blues.
Read about how the owners stopped in Memphis and fell in love. They went back and brought the barbecue home. I just wished they had brought the love back with them, too.
The ambiance and service in this place is very good. We went there on a Friday night and were able to get a table for 6 no problem at about 7pm. We had 5 adults and one child about 11years old.
We ordered one of their platters which we were told would be good for 4 people. Well, it landed on our table about 5 minutes after we had ordered and paid and holy smokes, it was a LOT of food. We had also ordered Nachos to have as a starter, which incidentally arrived about 5 minutes after our main had come.
The Nachos had pulled pork, bbq sauce and cheese on them. Some liked them and some didn't. I liked them because they were a bit different.
The meat platter also had fries, coleslaw, potato salad and beans. I'm not a fan of potato salad or coleslaw, so I can't comment on those, but the beans were good. The fries were okay, but a bit on the salty side.
The meat itself wasn't as good as I've had there in the past. Some of it almost seemed a little dried out. It was still good, just not as awesome as I remember it. Nothing a little dousing of BBQ sauce can't handle!
It was still enough for my hubby and I to take home a full to go container. My brother in law also ended up with a full to go container to take home too. I made pulled meat grilled sandwiches the next evening for dinner. Pulled pork, brisket, chicken, and beef ends with cheese and a little dijon mustard all thrown onto a grill. How can you go wrong there!
I ordered take out. When I phoned in I said what I was ordering. I got a memphis feast. They said It would be ready in 10 minutes, my jaw dropped. so i said you better make it 20 because I dont live that close. I found a parking spot across the street and rushed in. As i walked in I already liked the ambiance. The walls were covered in posters of blues musicians. It was pretty empty that night. I noticed that all the tables were clean. I told I was here to pick up an order, they said they were just packing it up. The washrooms were very clean. The young woman at the counter was very helpful. Okay, now for the food. As I crack open my fries, i noticed they were very soggy but they tasted delicious. The ribs were fall off the bone, and very savoury. The pulled pork was very moist. The brisket was dry,so points off for that. The sausage was very tasty. The chicken I didnt care for. One thing I noticed though, you put the bbq sauce that they give you on the meat. Will I return? Definitely. All the time? only once in a while.
I have dined at two of the Lower Mainland Memphis Blues establishments and this one is better than the one on Broadway. In a relative sense the food quality is probably as good as British Colulmbia B-B-Q gets but in an absolute sense comparing it to real U.S. southern B-B-Q it is but mediocre. The pulled pork is probably their best dish. I found the ribs tough and dry, hardly falling off the bone. The Cornish game hen is dry, tasteless and poor. The price is also on the high side and the portions are not particularly large. The service is attentive and the atmosphere is appropriate.
Well, I've had friends talk about Memphis for years. So on Saturday lunch we happen to be on Lonsdale and noticed this location, and finally we decided to give it a try.
There was nothing bad about it. But there was no WOW factor at all. It was all just OK. We shared a pulled pork sandwich, and smoked sausage. First off, I did not taste any smoke at all. Isnt that the point of a smoke house??
Second while it wasn't expensive, you did not get much for your money.
I will try it again, probably for dinner to try the ribs, give it another shot. But first visit for lunch did not inspire me.
This restaurant was recommended to me and so I checked it out earlier this week with a few friends. Kind of a mix between a diner and a cafeteria, you order your food from the counter and they deliver it to your table.
Food - Pretty solid, especially given the relatively cheap prices. I ordered the 1/2 ribs meal. It came with cornbread, beans, coleslaw and some tasty fries. The ribs were good on their own, but pretty damn tasty when combined with the BBQ sauce they give you.
Service - Quick and friendly. Not really a sit down restaurant though, so its tough to judge this category.
Ambiance - Basic tables and booths, similar to an Earls or Cactus Club. Food comes in a plastic tray/container. They played country music over the speakers and had a lot of southern decor on the walls.
All in all, a good experience and I wouldn't mind going back and trying some of their other dishes. Perhaps I'll also try to check out one of their other locations next time.
We ordered a pulled pork sandwich, half slab of ribs and a full slab for our teen son. The food was okay, decent BBQ when covered with copious amounts of their vinegary BBQ sauce. Ribs were a bit dry and tough but not inedible by any means. A full slab platter would be enough for two adults to share, our teen couldn't finish it all. The sides are good but small, beans are smoky and tasty, corn bread, cole slaw. Had to serve ourselves water, which was warm so we had to ask the helpful waitress for ice. All in all, I make better BBQ at home in my smoker Q so we likely won't go again, but it's decent BBQ if you're not fussy about it.
So, my friend is taking me around to try different restaurants and we noticed this little hole in the wall around the mid-Lonsdale area. I asked him if he'd ever been and he said no, so we decided to take a peek.
It was the ambiance that caught us, really, sort of a fifties vibe with Elvis music and era posters and decor. We walked in and took a look at the menu, noticing that there was nothing but Meat available, but such a collection of meat!
My friend had a pulled pork sandwich, while I went for the rib ends. We also had wings and some root beer in glass bottles for little under thirty bucks. Everything was good, if a little greasy - but at a place like this you have to expect the grease. That's sort of the whole point, really.
Evidently, this is a chain. I need to see if there are any of these places back home - if there are and it's anything like this place, than I have a new place to go for lunch!
Meat lovers will love this place. Their meat is cooked overnight with patience. And by the time it gets to your table, it will peel right off the bone.
Like their other locations, service has always been very friendly and consistent. This is not a fine dining eatery but a nice place to hang out with friends. During some evenings, you can enjoy your meal while a band or blues man hits the mic with a catchy tune.
Sure, there are better authentic southern style BBQ places out there. But for a small market like South Western BC, Memphis BBQ is heaven for carnivores!
Well
Having been to a real Kansas City BBQ restaurant,,,,Memphis needs some more work. I read the reviews and thought Wow a real life BBQ.......not so!
Soggy beans, sour cole slaw, and a less than appealing cook !. lose the nose and ear rings........it scares the customers away !
The Pulled pork bun I must say was pretty good, full as one would expect........served on a cold bun unfortunatly,,,and not served with onions like in the ole south!
Maybe it was an off day.......
The prices are average to medium range,,,expected in todays eating out economy,,,,20 bucks barely buys two people lunch nowadays, so in respect to that Memphis was a good buy.
Would I go back ?,,maybe for dinner,,,,,,,not sure,,,with so many more eating establisments to try ,Memphis I think is low down on the list...for now!
I came here on a weeknight. Ordered the Combo Plate, choice of 2 meats, and 2 sides. I had the Chicken and the Pulled Pork. Pulled pork was awesome, as awesome as I remember the last time I tried one of these restaurants a few years ago. The 2 sides, I had a piece of Corn bread(which was pretty un-fantastic), beans(which tasted like beans in BBQ Sauce), and Cole-slaw. The Cole-slaw is pretty much KFC Cole-slaw... First you wonder what it is?.... Then you wonder why it's that color? Then you think to yourself how much of this stuff they scrap off people's plates and throw out every night...? I'm not gonna tell anyone how to run their business, but, they need to start serving something other than meat. I mean, a decent piece of bread would be nice. Or maybe some Mashed Potatoes, or Rice Pilaf?... I dunno, just throwing out ideas here.
It was good, the chicken was pretty dry tho, I would've ordered the Brisket like my Buddy did. I guess 20$ ain't bad really for what I ate, it was a huge portion. They have drink specials for the Canuck Games too.
Service as alright, pretty much, it's just walk up and order. We grabbed a pitcher of water for ourselves, which was just fine. The Tables and Seats we clean, people were friendly. It was good.
I don't think I'd be coming back to this place again for a long while, I'm by no means a Vegetarian or a health Nut, but, all that meat... it's just too much. I guess if you're ready to pass right out afterwards, then it's alright.
I came here yesterday for a quick bite and was decently surprised by the value. Portions are of decent size for the price you pay and tasted great. I would completely redecorate the restaurant as it seems dated and a bit dirty, but the food and service were good. If you're in the neighborhood and hungry, not a bad place to check out.
We had heard so much about Memphis Blues and were really excited to try it, so when we saw the North Van location we jumped at the chance. We ordered the Memphis feast which gives you a bit of everything. All of the meat with the exception of the sausage was increadibly dry. My fiance and I both choked on the white meat of the chicken. The beef brisket was so dry it was brittle. The BBQ sauce was pretty good, the fries were over cooked and hard, the coleslaw was uninspired and totally lacking flavor ( I Would much rather have whitespots coleslaw any day) The potato salad had a really strange texture but an ok flavour. Will we return? Absolutely not!
I decided to write this review after reading the trashy one below. We've been to this restaurant few times and the quality of food was consistently good. Had a pulled pork sandwich and platter, and other meats off the menu - all juicy and tender, just as one would expect them to be. Sides were equally enjoyable including coleslaw and beans. Perhaps those exposed to a real southern BBQ have different expectations, but we left happy on all occassions. I mean - do not expect Parkside there, it's a _simple_ joint with a good food and actually pretty decent sitting area and ambiance.
As far as expecting "more" for waving a bag of bone chips in manager's face - I genuinely hate this sort of an attitude.
Restaurants are run by people, and people have tendency to screw up. Found a problem - sure, tell them. If it was an honest mistake, they'll fix it. Your compensation is a "thank you" and a better restaurant. Extorting a "more than a sandwich" in return for your good deed though is revolting.
The chicken sandwich was terrible dry and had to add the beans and coleslaw to it to be worth eating. My friend enjoyed the ribs plate. This seems to be a hit or miss type spot in North Van compared to the solid tasty MBBH on Commercial.
The service was pleasant even though we had to ask them to make coffee twice.
If my friends want to come I will join them as it is a nice hang out spot with great tv for sports, but will just have a beer and cornbread and skip the BBQ.
This is a fun alternative. If you have messy bottomless pit teenage boys to feed then it is perfect. The portions are generous but a bit predictable. Order one of the platters on your first visit as you'll get a sampling of all the treats.
Overall, this is a solid and quick feast that is very laid back.
A good taste of the south, quick and fresh food, and really tasty meat. The pulled pork sandwich was absolutely loaded, very generous portions are provided for all items on the menu.
I found the waiter quite helpful in suggesting what was worth picking - he actually chose everything for my whole party, and no one was disappointed!
And to the person saying a nose ring scares customers away? Be less judgemental please, this isn't a five-star restauarant in downtown; good food is good food, lets not nitpick over how the people that cook it dress!
I did a take out order consisting of the large pulled pork sandwhich and a BBQ chicken salad. I found no less than 7 bone chips in this incredibly overpriced very small sandwhich for around $9.00. I called the restaurant immediately and informed them, they apologized and said there will be a free sandwhich for me next time I go in. Now about the salad, it consisted of some greens , plain chicken breast and a container of BBQ sauce. This too was around $9.00. The new salads at Safeway blow theirs out of the water for $2.00 less. What a lousy experience it was. I guess they do not rely on repeat business. I bagged the bone chips and took them to show the manager. She said she was sorry and offered me the free sandwhich to which I declined. Sorry but if I were her, I would surely have offered more than a lame sandwhich. I told my co-workers about it , and I guarantee, they will not be going. I have recommended many restaurants to friends and I have no problem pointing out the bad ones.
