I went to this Fast food outlet at the mall in North Van. I have had Manchu wok before and it is one of the few places you can get veggies in a food court. I had noodle and veggies. It came to almost $7! I got exactly 5 veggie pieces and 3/4 c of noodles. I complained. He said "Lady that is portion". It 's less than half what the other Manchu woks give and a complete rip off. Do not go there.
I sometimes eat at Manchu Wok 3 times a week (usually Metrotown or Brentwood).
I tried this location recently. Interesting how the prices vary by mall - quite a bit cheaper here than Metrotown for example.
Selection at this location I found a bit weak that day. There's about 5 or 6 dishes the Wok serves up that I really like (pepper beef, honey garlic chicken, ginger chicken, general tso's chicken, etc.) but I didn't see any of them there. Nothing else there really set me on fire and was verified when I ate it,
The thing that drives me the most crazy about Manchu Wok is the portion sizes are often inconsistent. In fact I avoided this place for years because my initial experience was chincy portions. Further visits had larger portions. Then chincy portions. Drives me nuts. This varies a bit by location as well. Most other chinese fast food places I get basically heap it on the plate so there is no doubt. Not sure how the Capilano location fares for consistency, it was OK on our only visit. If it wasn't for the inconsistent portions I'd give the Wok overall 4 stars.
Service is always really fast at the Wok, even if there is a big lineup they blow through it really quick.
This place is either decent or bad. The food doesn't taste fresh to me, and I've tried it on numerous occasions. More often thatn not it's luke warm and overly seasoned. The staff seem snotty or atleast unfriendly. Just regular fast, cheap, okay-ish Chinese food. Even for a mall food court joint it's less than decent.
For a fast food place, this place has got some pretty good food. It's fast and to-the-point and you can get what you want. However, it cannot compare to restaurants in selection and you don't want to always get food there. For a once in a while place, it's good!
I have visited this place a few times and have never left disappointed. Food is always served hot, flavour is just right, and service is prompt. My usual order is the two item combo plate which comes with fried rice or noodles. For me, it's always fried rice with curry chicken and orange chicken. The curry chicken is tender and the sauce goes great with the rice. It is not too spicy but spicy enough to hit the spot. The orange chicken is tremendously flavourful. Chicken is lightly battered and not overdone and made with real oranges in a rich tangy sauce. Depending on the day, there's also butterfly shrimp, chicken balls, kung pao chicken, beef and broccoli, and black pepper beef just to name a few.
Since this place is in a mall, I can't really comment on the ambiance. My rating on that was based on the cleaniness of the serving area and to me, it is solid.
If you are ever in Capilano Mall, give this place a try. You will not be disappointed with the quality of the food for the price. It is better than some chinese restaurants that I have visited. Also, after a hard day at work, this place is a great alternative to cooking. And don't forget, free fortune cookie!
