A family-owned Persian restaurant
We passed by this place a few times on the way to Laleh and it always enticed us to come in and try for some reason. Unfortunately, it looks like one of our esteemed colleagues just beat us to the punch (again!)
Sure, this place is behind all the other places, in the alley. But it's a clean alley. Inside looks a little bit grungy, but at least the cutlery looks clean enough.
The quirkiness continues as the waitress patiently explained the menu to us and took our order. Did I mention she is Korean and had on her "Wang" (that's a giant food manufacturer) apron? Friendly though, which helped, as she explained that, sorry, fully half the menu was no longer available (I'm not sure if it was that night or "forever"). And that was the interesting half. How about the "stews"? No, that's out too. Oh, and sorry, the home-made dough (the drink) was also not available.
Never mind, we satisfied ourselves with a soltani and chicken kebab plate. They started us off with, yes, the pita, cheese, herbs (just cilantro actually) and big chunks of onion. The chef/cook immediately started up the grill while we munched and watched cheesy Persian soap opera's.
Aaah, but big thumbs up to the food that came quickly. Koobideh was very juicy and tasty, no burnt bits at all. This was topped (I think) by the chicken, so juicy, so tender, I didn't even need a knife to cut it (which was good, because I didn't have one). The rice was usual, but I like the grilled tomatoes weren't burnt beyond recognition.
Good? Yah. For cheap eats, I might hit here instead of the much busier Yaas up a few blocks. Now if only they would bring back the last half of the menu and all the other good bits. I'll be coming back and eyeing them for sure. It doesn't hurt that Laleh is just around the corner either...
Mrs. C and I wanted to have more Iranian cuisine, since we live on the NS and that is where the action is. This place is in an alley at the back of a Persian strip mall on 15th. You get to it by turning into the alley which opens up onto a parking lot. Despite the location, it seems really popular.
The restaurant is simply decorated and has an open kitchen so you can see your meal being made. It looked very clean including the w/c. The staff were quite friendly and took the time to explain the various dishes. The menu is in English and Farsi so you can tell it is the real deal. We ordered a tzatziki and an onion tomato salad, two kinds of beef kebabs and rice. I wanted to try some of the stews but they were sold out. Like I said, it is a popular eatery. The meal came with triangles of pita bread, feta cheese chunks and raw onion, and I had a glass of tea, since that was what the other diners were drinking.
All the food was terrific, and I enjoyed the friendly atmosphere which was entirely different than another NS Persian joint I reviewed recently. It was also a very good price. I look forward to my next visit.
