Only okay, probably not worth a trip

I had heard some decent reviews before so we decided to wander here. It was pretty empty on a Saturday night, so we had no problem getting a table. We had no issue with service (and I'm pretty certain we don't look Persian), so I'm not sure what the previous problems were. Maybe it was a one-off or they had to respond to lack of business?

Anyways, the interior is definitely showing its age. Not quite enough to stop me from eating there, but it needs some cleaning up (w.c. was pasable that night). Don't take anyone here if you want to impress them.

We weren't that impressed with the menu either. Heavy on the kebabs, and only a few other different dishes. Definitely NOT the most varied Persian menu I recall seeing. The 2nd hit was the sticker shock. They sure looked high. I will give them a pass for now because the prices in restaurants around town have gone up and to be honest, even though we ordered a platter for 2, three of us left quite full. On the other hand the damage was over $60 for 3 for just the platter plus extra salad and a couple of drinks.
Now the food, the dough was weak, really weak. The appetizers were okay, no real complaints (a yoghurt type thing and a roast eggplant dish). The main of the platter had 3 kebabs (over $45 for this, keep in mind). Koobideh was juicy and tasty, the chicken one was similar, maybe even one of the better ones I've had. The other beef one was not as big a hit with the party, though I thought it was okay.
But here's the issue, it wasn't obviously outstanding compared to what I've had before and for about half the price, I could get quite a bit more from, for example, Yaas, and that was close enough that I probably wouldn't notice a difference without a side-by-side test. And they typically go for $6-7 so ....

The service and food are pretty good, but difficult to recommend this place given the price.

racism is not kool

Mrs. C and I were entertaining out of town relatives, and I made a reservation for the crew to try the local Iranian food. One of Mrs. C's siblings married a nice Persian girl and she craved for the native delicacies.

I arrived before the rest of our party to make sure the table was ready, but as soon as the manager got a look at me suddenly they 'lost' my reservation and had no room in the 2/3 empty restaurant. I guess I wasn't their kind. When my Persian relative arrived, I sent her in alone to ask for a table. No problem, we got tables on the patio right away. The staff seemed a little upset when the rest of the dinner party came in and sat down, but it was a fait accompli at that point.

The food wasn't too bad. We let our expert guest order, and had some tasty kebabs, some dishes that looked like tzatziki and hummus, a stew dish with pomegranate and beef, some nice salads, and rice with saffron. All were just fine. The ambiance was okay and was very Iranian with all the trimmings, but the w/c was quite nasty. The rest of the place could have been a bit cleaner, but it wasn't too bad. We were a little surprised at the high prices, but Iranian cuisine is a niche market even on the North Shore, so the cost wasn't entirely unexpected.

Not a bad meal, but I was shocked that such blatant racism exists in Canada. They should leave their hate at home.

Can't recommend.

Beware the auto tip

Food is always good here - lovely appetizers, mains and ice cream dessert. I only wish they would offer a bit better than one selection on a plate with rice for the main courses. So we swap and share our hearty individual main dishes and get to taste a couple that way. Eight of us ate here and we understood they would charge a 15% tip. We were ready to pay when one mathematician at the table realised we were being charged 15% on the food and beer taxes as well. The waitress said "that's our policy". To be fair she did recalculate right away it so we were paying the tip on the basic food and bev costs and not tipping on the government's share. After a few beers it is easy not to notice you are being taken.

Taste Test of Persian Food, and it did NOT disappoint
By bubblejumm of Richmond , BC (10 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, May 9, 2010 - 2:52pm [Dine in]

My boyfriend came here on a Saturday evening for some dinner.
After reading all of the horrible service reviews, but the great food, we just had to try it.

It was our first time trying Persian food, and it was delicious!

We had what the server suggessted (boneless chicken skewer and beef skewer).
The chicken and the beef were so soft and very tender, and even the rice was great with it. It definitely satisfied our hunger! It makes me want to come back and truly I recommend others to try it as well.

The service was great. We had a younger female server, and she was really nice and she gave us great recommendations. She was not pushy and annoying, and made us feel comfortable (although everyone was Persian in the restaurant, except for us). However, the owner lady was not very charismatic. She only noticed/acknowledged our presence in the restaurant when we were about to pay, and her tone of voice was not very friendly. Perhaps it's the lack of fluency in English? I totally get what everyone else is saying here. If I were her, I'd make sure that I'm friendly to everyone, cuz you never know who writes reviews on your restaurant. Because of a 5-minute encounter, with her, I'm giving the service aspect a 4 instead of a 5.

The ambiance was similar to Mirch Masala in Surrey. It was really authentic however, since they had this mini fish pond in the middle of nowhere, and there was interesting art work displayed all throughout the restaurant, do it sets the mood that you're in a Persian restaurant.

Over all, it was a pleasant surprise, and we plan on coming back.

AMAZING! Better than kebabs in Iran!

The food here is by far the best Iranian food in Vancouver! Their kebabs are so tender it just melts in your mouth. I went there with a group of 20 people, and we ordered shared plates and everything we had was amazing. My dad's friend just came from Iran and he said the food was better than most Iranian restaurants back home. Maybe we went on a good day because the service was great, we did not feel pushed, or treated badly. The owner was very friendly and even brought us some complimentary tea and dessert. We had three servers serving our table and everything was fast considering our large group. They did charge 15% for tip but they told us that for large tables it's standard, and in their defence EVERY restaurant does this now, even Cactus, or Earls! I thought their portions are huge, and a great value for the price. I would definitely go back again! I am addicted to their famous eggplant dip, make sure to order it! Yum!

Worst Service - Good food

Submitted Sunday, September 6, 2009 - 12:07pm [Dine in]

Great food, not out of this world but worth it if you are a fan of Persian cuisine.

The service was unbelievable poor. Unfriendly and barely saw our server. The restaurant was busy but not packed and we waited far too long for our beverage order, our food order, our bill. It's not for lack of trying to catch someone's eye. If they are understaffed then the owners need to fix this. People dine out for a reason and poor service is unacceptable if they expect a tip.

We paid part for the bill on credit and left a 10% tip in cash on the table. As we walked down the sidewalk, the woman had the audacity to chase us down and say, "We didn't add the service to the bill." We told her it was left in cash on the table. Unbelievable!

The ambience inside was terrible. Dirty pond in the middle filled with brown water and fish. It was dark and a bit dank.

Unfortunate as we really liked the food, the meat was tender and the rice was perfect. Maybe take out next time.

Good food and famous horrible service :D

So this is a good persian restaurant in the North Vancouver. The food ranks high between persian restaurants. But it is famous for it's horrible service and aggressive owner. Just try not to mess with the owner as she gets angry and might shout at you. It is funny that they wrote on the table: Please not steal the calendars, please not throw coins in the water and these kind of crap. As far as I remember there is a mandatory 15% tip and be aware ! they might charge you more than what it supposed to be ! So make sure to check your bill and calculate it yourself !

Great food, but prefer to pick up

I've been to a ton of Iranian restaurants in Vancouver, but none quite rival the tenderness of the kababs at Kashcool. The rice is delicious too.

If you're looking to fill up and don't care too much about the old decor, I'd suggest it, but also why not call in a pick it up instead?

Value could be better on the combo options for 3, 4,...etc on the back of the menu, although it makes things a lot easier.

My two cents: Stcik with the rice, kabab koobideh, barg, or joojeh. The Barg (steak) is surprisingly tender. The joojeh (chicken) can be cut with a spoon... delish!

I feel bad for the restaurant because the food is really good, and the service is really horrible. I have been charged mandatory tips before, but in high end restaurants for large numbers, here they add it manually, and run it in the visa authorization without even asking you! Oh, and it was only 4 people. But the best part is, they charged us for food that we ordered but was never brought to the table, the excuse was that she "could not void the invoice" and she offered that we take out that dish home.
Even though it is overpriced, I was willing to go again, but now after the billing episode it is a definite red flag for me and anyone I know.

I live in New West, so North Van is quite the drive, however worth it. They have amazing food, and the drinks were pretty good aswell. I requested my kabab chicken mild and they did a good job. The Kabab roll is really excellent - Number One of its class but not very economical. There service was alright and the girl very cute. and overall a good experience, i would definitley come again.

This is a different type of restaurant and it is very good. I say it is worth the drive to North Van. We had no idea what to expect foodwise but having met several Persian girls we were hoping for more of the same. The food was great. It is kabab of lamb or beef in a plate of rice with sides. They make it lovely. They also drink tea with it Persian style. It is not the cheapest at $20 per person (incl. tea but does not include tip) but they bring lots of the delicious stuff. Where they really rock your bottoms off is the chicidillas. Persian girls serving and eating are great and friendly making it the right atmosphere. I look for food, service and something to look at when I eat and Kashcool has em all.
I cant comment on dessert because we skipped it being so full there was no room for anything else

What a treat! I have been to several Persian restaurants - this one undoubtedly is the best!

We had an amazing time - the kebabs were as authentic as you can get. The Joojeh was so tender and succulent that my daughter was commending their marinade. The others were great too..

The service was very courteous and friendly, both the ladies serving - I guess they own the restaurant, came to the table to ask how we found the food...

We'll be back !!!

Don't let the staff recommend what and how much to order for you

Wnt for dinner to the restaurant with seven adults and four children. This was our first time at the restaurant and we were not sure about how much to order. We told the waitress (who we later found out was the owner's daughter) that we had one vegetarian and three non-beef eaters. She suggested the platter with lamb chops, chicken kebabs and beef kebabs. We repeated that we didn't want too much beef...just a little...she insisted that she catered for parties everyday and knew exactly what to order for us...so we agreed.
What arrived at our table were three enormous platters of meat which contained 50% beef and the rest lamb and chicken. The rice was good as was the hummus, eggplant dip and tzatki...however there was way too much beef....a simple apology and some graciousness would have sufficed...however the waitress was offended by our feedback and insisted that it was our fault for ordering too much. My mother the vegetarian dined on pita, grilled tomatoes and rice as the stew we ordered for her was a sweet dish of pomegrante and nuts. We had three full doggy bags of beef kebabs (we are tourists and can't store this for another day).
So..although what we ate tasted great and succulent...we left the restaurant with a bad taste in our mouth and $500 out of pocket. We were not even offered a free dessert or a coffee...an apology or a smile. I will not recommend this restaurant to anyone.

I went for my best friend's birthday party. The flavours were amazing and the environment was warm and inviting. Having a persian best friend, I aquired a taste for Iranian cuisine and now LOVE it. So I give it a solid rating. However, the service was a bit slow and confusing. There was english and farsi flying all over the place and our waitress seemed pretty aloof. I think I'd have been in trouble if I didn't have friends there to translate my order into Farsi for the waitress to understand.

I echo the sentiments of most of the posters here. I keep going back to this place because I love the food BUT the service leaves a lot to be desired. The servers act like prima donnas. They probably own the place so they have this "we don't need your money" attitude.

I was with 5 other friends during my last visit there. They gave us a window table where the sun was staring us right at our faces. I noticed that the middle tables were empty so we asked to be transferred. The server gave us a corner table instead which could barely sit 4! So we asked again if we could have another one. Then the server just went on a mini tirade, “I gave you the only table that sits 6 and but you wanted a different one… blah blah blah.” She could’ve just told us that the middle tables were already reserved and we would have been happy with the window table, which is where we ended up anyway. I don’t know what she was trying to prove by sitting us on a table where we couldn’t even fit!

To top it all off, and just like 5ive0 experienced, they added a 15% tip to our bill. I’ve been there with more people and I don’t recall them ever doing that. Maybe that’s what they do when they piss you off. And the 15% tip wasn’t 15% of the pre-tax bill. It wasn’t even 15% of the after-tax total. It was more like 20% after taxes!

We have been to this place many times but the service gets worse and worse every time. The first time I saw the restaurant I thought the decorations were interesting but now it always looks dirty. We have stopped going because the service is really poor. The food is always good, especiallt the joojeh kaboob (yum) but the staff always rush you even when its not busy and they practically throw the food at you. We have also had problems with overcharging but it makes no sense to argue. Maybe we will get take out.

Bad Experience
By geneagain of vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Saturday, August 9, 2008 - 11:04am [Dine in]

This restaurant used to be one of the better Persian Restaurants in North Vancouver but has greatly disappointed me this past Thursday.
Portions of rice have decreased, there was no feta cheese on the appy plate, $7.95 for TaDig is ridiculous as the portion was very small.
The main complaint was the service which didn't even rate - the waitress sat at the counter reading a book and couting her tips while we all waited to be looked after. She wasn't polite, didn't smile and argued with the customers. When we asked for a cup of coffee, we were told they didn't have any and they did not even offer to brew a pot.
The ambiance and food taste are good but without the service, it is lost. The bathrooms need updating and were not the cleanest.
When I was there at Christmas with a group of eight, an automatic 15% gratuity was placed on the bill. Usually the "TIP" is for good service which we did not get then.
As you can see, I've given them a second chance and will probably give them one more before changing restaurants. Word of mouth is a wonderful marketing tool.

i don't know what it is in our culture that makes us think we are so superior. sometimes i am not proud being persian, when it comes to the service of this restaurant, it's amazing how little they know how to please a customer, and the unprofessional manner is rude and condescending. anyway the food is great, their kababs are so succulent and tasty, now if the service would match that, i am sure they would have more customers. if one of the servers is reading this, let it be known first and foremost that the customer is king, when they are dissatisfied with a meal for any reason, don't argue but come to an amicable solution, so they can have a nice experience and come back, so as a result you have a returning customer. i personally like my rice cooked well, and when i returned my plate to the server she said, thats how they make it in the kitchen, and i said and this is how i like it to be, anyway it was a chore for her given the expression on her face to return my plate and not see any change in the rice. the design is very lovely and there is ample parking, the prices are ok but there is always room for improvement.

Good fare but poor service

If you ever want to try a good authentic Persian or Middle Eastern restaurant, then Kash Cool is a good place to start. It's located just a few blocks off the major shopping centre, off the beaten path.

The atmosphere is cozy with wonderful decor and even a fish pond set in the middle.

The food is excellent and everyone in our group agreed that the kebabs were moist and tender. It was a little sour for myself. I had ordered the chicken kebab with barbary berry and fried rice. The hostess recommended a yogurt drink to go with my food but I wasn't really interested in a milky drink so opted to go with plain water. The food was not spicy and delicious.

Of course, you cannot leave the Kash Cool Restaurant without trying their speciality - the non-nitcotine, non-tar hookah (water pipes) which comes in strawberry flavor. That was interesting to say the very least!

Apart from the excellent food, I must say the service is very, very poor and is something to be desired. We made reservation for a group of 12 people but three cancelled at the very last minute. Our hostress was upset because in her mind, she had lost three potential customers (the restaurant was not even packed!) and told us the next time we made a reservation with them, we should have the EXACT same number as asked for. I thought that was a bit rude.

We had to constantly asked for items like hot water, extra plates, menu... we were constantly being ignored. I personally felt insulted and not valued as a customer.

Apart from the service, the food was excellent. I would certainly recommend this place if not for the lousy service so be warned!

We went to Kashcool because we'd never tried Persian food and wanted to give it a whirl. Turns out the food is very tasty, but the waitress was very rude and condescending. She refused to believe we just wanted to have a bunch of appetizers to share and was either driving us nuts by asking if we were ready to order dinner yet (this AFTER we told her more than once that we just were going to order a bunch of small plates) or completely ignoring us. She even sent over someone else to clear our table and give us the bill. So, we'll try somewhere else next time...
