Came here for weekday lunch visit. A bit before noon and the place was pretty empty. Nice outdoor seating with a big screen TV outside. Noticed it was not in HD but was not here for sports viewing. Tried the chicken burger and it was pretty average, nothing specatcular. Average side salad. For the price at $12, a bit overpriced. Service was good and the food came out fast which is important for weekday lunches. Overall an OK place but would prefer Earl's or Cactus Club.
An update on my previous review, this place had become a favourite of mine - loved the friendly and attractive servers, great ambience, reasonable prices, and I had liked the food - until I tried some things on the menu that really turned me off.
So one visit we ordered their appetizer platter thing, which has wings, quesadillas, bruschetta, and something else I can't recall. So unless my wife and I are crazy, both the quesadilla and the bruschetta were made with processed cheese! Have you ever heard of such a thing? It was absolutely gross. Maybe they ran out of regular cheese that night? If so they should just say so. Or maybe it was just some crazy experiment or 3 year old cook filling in.
I also sampled their pizza which made some bold claims as to how good it was. It wasn't good at all.
But other than that there are still some tasty items. I'm maybe being a bit harsh considering there are some good eats here as well but I can't get past the processed cheese.
Anyway I really just wanted to get the processed cheese thing off my chest. Maybe it's just me but processed cheese should not be served in real restaurants. If Hurricane (or any restaurant, e.g. Browns) is reading this please consider this feedback. This alone has mostly stopped me from coming here as I just wonder what the heck they are thinking and don't want to gamble on my meals. I'll probably be back the odd time, but I won't order anything with cheese in it.
Mrs. C and I went to HG recently because we thought they had prime rib on special. We got seated in the middle of the maelstrom, and realized this place is really a bar that serves food, not a restaurant. Wow, was it loud!
We shouted our order to the all-in-black server: Aloha and pepperoni pizzas, and beers. The prime rib was 20 bucks, which seemed like a bit of a rip-off, so we passed on that. The food arrived quickly and the drinks weren’t crazy expensive for a bar, and we chowed down. The food was good, and so no complaints there. The w/c was a little nasty, but as I’ve said twice already, it’s a bar.
Maybe Chasiubow is getting old, but I like to be able to converse when I eat. That was not possible at HG.
But hey, it’s a bar.
Ok, I'll give it that this is a great place to watch the hockey games, but not to eat. Great drinking place. But the food is obviously of a very poor quality.
I have had steak here, and it is tough and grisly...don't tell me it's Alberta's best, it certainly is not, and I should know as I'm from Alberta...actually I'm not from Alberta, and I don't see how being from Alberta necessarily makes them an expert.
I've also had the nachos here, with virtually no cheese or toppings. Please, this is not the best in North Van. It's not the worst either, but the food is pretty bad, and its better to go to drink and watch sports, and thats about it.
We split the calamari which was a very small serving and very rubbery, sauce was good. The diced green onions on top had dark wilted bits that we picked out.
The $12.00 salad I had was overpriced, a couple cups of mixed green that had seen better days, I had to pull out out the pieces that had gone slimey and black, which happens when the lettuce is kept too long.
Dressing was tasty but way too much of it, "sodden" would be a good word. The the scant amount of candied pecans had a lot of sugar crusted on them and I do not think that strawberries and tomatoes are a good match on the same salad....
My husbands "curry" dish was more edible but lack lustre, he had to ad salt and pepper to make it more palatable. Not usually required with "curry".
The table was sticky, all over and the carpet was really dirty, with a very visible accumulation of dirt and food bits all around the bases of furniture, and not just from one or two days, they need to talk with their cleaners.
The girls at the door and table were friendly, and attentive but could not make up for place that felt kinda grubby and very poor food value. Will not go there again. If you had only a beer and watched the game.....maybe
My coworkers had been talking about visiting hurricane grill for some time so I decided for my husaband and I to check it out on their noted hockey game nights.
I was rather disappointed because it took our server ten minutes to find us menus and another ten to bring us cutlery.
The food also took a long time and our appetizers which were supposed to arrive before our main course, arrived all together.
The prices weren't too expensive but the ambiance was lacking.
I love this place to begin with. It's been a while since I've gone in because I can't really afford it anymore. They Renovated the whole place which looks great. It was wednesday and I keep hearing about their comedy night so I gave it a shot. It was actually free like I heard and I was expecting open mic. I was pretty impressed. There was I think 5 or 6 comics and 3 of them I had seen on tv before. It was actually amazing. I do warn you though...don't take the kids to see this comedy. They do cross the line here and there and swear a little. It's one of the little secrets of north van that should be more known. It was packed but I had no idea it happens every week with different comics. I'll definatly be there next wednesday to check it out again. p.s. try the seafood linguini...it was delicious.
This is "Cheers" the show - revived. The staff and the owner are friendly and happy to serve you. The food is good value and rather good. The bartenders are fun and become your friends instantly. They remember your drinks and anxious to please you. How can you go wrong? Its the place for all sporting games, NHL Hockey, Football, Soccer, whatever. Its our favourite pub. "Pubhopper"
A great place to sit at the bar or the patio and enjoy the day. Jason, Sam, Sherri and Wes are probably the best bartenders on the Shore.I have never been in a place on the Shore with so many regulars and that speaks volumes to the bartenders. THe atmosphere for hockey games is charged and with 10 or so TVs you always have a view. The food is fantastic and what a great staff. Warm, friendly and yes, very good looking! The Alberta beef they serve there is some of the best I have had and having lived in Alberta for 40 years I should know. See you there.
great eats and very hot waitresses! I would recommend this place for any time you need a good solid stomach filler. Great atmosphere when the canucks are on tv and it's usually pretty busy the rest of the time so that must say something. Bartenders are fun and waitresses are "cactus club/earls" level. I'd reccomend the prawns, pizza or chicken burgers...
My wife went here for dinner with one of her friends the other day. The following is her review of the place. I arrived earlier than my friend and I was promptly served by a hostess/waitress. She was very smiley and energetic. When my friend arrived 5 minutes later we were served by our waitress who was different than the first person I encountered. I ordered a cup of the tortilla soup and was actually quite looking forward to it, however it never arrived:( We both ordered the pesto chicken sandwich with Caesar salad. The sandwich was good however it was really very small and did little to actually fill us up. The Caesar salad on the side was crouton free and lacked taste. Our waitress appeared disinterested and frankly forgot about us. She may have just been having an off day because the first waitress/hostess was actually really nice. I would give this another try in the future but I might be inclined to try something a little more filling and tasty. Stay tuned
The waitress was SUPER friendly and the menu is HUGE. The prices are very reasonable and there honestly is a lillte of everything on the menu. We had Bruchetta, becuause I love the tasty bruchetta at H.G. I decided to have the Steak Sandwitch and it was YUMMY it was cooked perfectly and it must have been about 10 bucks it was cheap. They also had beer on sprecial. I was very pleased so I decided this would be a good place to bring friends for Sunday morning Brekfast the following Sunday. Well, there was no line up we went right in on Sunday, we had 8 people and it was great. The hashbrowns were amazing crispy tasty wow. I had Strak and eggs becuase I wanted more of that steak and it was great. They had "Super Sunday" breakfast too, my frineds had it, $4.99 for HUGE breakfast with Toast, eggs, baccon, sausage wow yum yum yum! Go here the service is great, the food is good, the prices are good, there is somethign for everyone on the menu. It is very relaxed. This is not the place the queen of england would go to eat but I would definately go back !
Was out for a drive and we were getting hungry I spotted the patio and decided to check it out.
THe patio was setup with a glass roof and heaters for the coolers days, only probem I found was the varnish was deteriorating and is stickey. This happens over time and the table need to be sent out for refinishing.
Ordered the Philly cheese steak and it was very good. Sloppy and tender the way its supposed to be. The fries were home style and cooked just right. Decent price.
MY date had a salmon appitizer cant remember the name it looked good and she enjoyed it. Service was quick and the staff appreared to be running around from table to table and not sitting in the corner yacking it up instead of serving customers like you see in other pubs.
My friends and I were heading out for a birthday party, but our original dinner plan didn't work out, so we were scouring all of lower North Vancouver for a restaurant that would take a party of 10 on a Friday evening. Everywhere we called had a 1 hour (or longer) wait list, until we decided to try the Hurricane Grill. The waiters were very nice and exceptionally accommodating - all the inside seats were taken, but they let us sit outside at the patio tables until a space inside was freed up - they even surrounded us with the heaters, because the night was a bit chilly. As soon as a place was readied, we were let inside. Inside as well, the waitresses were very friendly.
Food was pretty good for a place like this; I had the Brandy Peppercorn steak (medium-rare) with a half-order of Caesar salad. Unlike the previous reviewer, yes, my salad did have croutons; the Crisp Greens salad my friend had looked delicious as well, but I was craving a Caesar, and they did a decent job. The steak was also very nice - it might have been cooked a "medium" rathern than "medium-rare," but it was still very tender and juicy. The sauce they had over it was quite strong and spicy, but nice. I wouldn't say the food was mind-blowing-ly amazing, but it was very good.
The only reason I gave service 4/5 was because it took a bit of a wait until we got our food; nevertheless, we were extremely grateful that they found a spot for us, so the wait was worth it.
This is the spot to go watch the game with your loud friends over several pints. Expect a sticky table and party atmosphere. Don't go looking to be impressed with the food. Don't take your family.
Didn't know what to expect when my family and I went here for my brother's birthday, but we were pleasntly surprised - we had heardgood things but still expected it might be over-rated. Instead, we found the food to be good, prices to be fair, and the servers to be enthused, courteous, and fast too! The manager/owner guy also seemed to appreciate his customers and I really respect that about a place. Check this one out!
