Great Lunch

I decided to try haru on Lonsdale, wasn't too busy after 2pm and service was quick & personable. I ordered their Salmon nigiri, futomaki roll and dynamite roll. The Salmon Nigiri, was amazing, melted in my mouth and had to order more of the salmon. I thought the futomaki and dynamite both had great taste, flavour and they didn't fall apart. I was amazed how good the food was, and I won't wait another year to return.
The price wasn't all that bad either, and like how the service was friendly and quick.

Will be back.

Tried Haru for lunch on a weekday and a good place for a fast bento box. About 6 to choose and range in prices from $6-$10. Chose the one with sashimi. Chicken terriyaki was pretty standard, OK sauce. The Cali roll was average, not that much rice which is good. The tempura seemed very fresh as was crispy. The sashimi (2 tuna and 3 farmed salmon) were cut into big pieces which made it hard to eat. Oveall, good quantity for the price of approx. $9. Service was quick and efficient. Nice decor and pretty clean. Would return.

Just fine...

I was in North Van doing a little Boxing Day shopping when I spotted this place across from London Drugs. I was tempted by the Indian place next door, but Haru was less crowded, so I went in. The restaurant is clean and new inside, and the prices are cheap, but there is nothing to set this place apart from the other couple of dozen cheap sushi joints along Lonsdale.

I tried a selection of decent rolls and also had some rather skimpy nigiri sushi. Mrs. Chasiubow had a sushi/teriyaki/udon combo. They were unremarkable. The miso soup was a bit better than average though.

Don't get me wrong, this place is just fine if you want a quick bite, but there is no reason to drive across town to get there.

Fast & Cheap

Sushi for me comes in two varieties. The Fast & Cheap kind, where speed and cost is more important than quality; and the upscale kind that is an art, may take a little longer and will cost a little more. Haru falls into the fast and cheap bucket.

As far as fast & cheap goes though, Haru is awesome. Yes fast, yes cheap (ish), and has a few surprises....massive sashimi, and surprising quality on some of the rolls (soft shell crab and special roll in particular).

If you need good sushi, for take out, in 20 mins, this is your place.

I love Haru. It is the for sure the best value for sushi on Lonsdale. However, the service, is not. I take-out from here a lot now instead of eating there because the girls there are ignorant. It is pretty annoying, not to mention rude, when you're waiting to pay for your food and a waitress is cleaning a table right in front of you. The restaurant was nearly empty too.
Gotta love the food though!

Excellent Sushi and Maki Restaurant

All I can tell you if that from my personal experiences, Haru Sushi is "by far" the best place for sushi and maki rolls around. I have been going to Haru for nearly one year now and have never found a difference in the high quality of food that I receive (whether dining in or out). The owners are very pleasant and accomodating. The only issue I have had is with several of their part time helpers who have had problems comprehending english. This has not hindered my enjoyment in any way and I would recommend and do recommend absolutely everyone to experience this place. The fish is always fresh and the rolls are tightly bound and delicious. As per the previous review to mine, the Miso "is" the best you will ever find.

Way to go Haru...keep up the excellent service!

Good place to take out

Great food for take out. Casual and neighborhood type of restaurant. Lunch boxes are the most reasonable one among all Japanese restaurants in North Vancouver. Sushi rolls are very good in general. If you look for a restaurant that is reasonable, and also have more than average taste, it is a good place to go. Great deal with Bento Box, or Sushi & Udon deal.

food not worth the time

Went here for sushi with friends on recommendation of someone from the area. Their sushi was nothing special for me. Not bad not great. Typical price, typical fare.

What helped me make up my mind about this place was the terrible service. Our table was ignored from the very beginning. The best was how the dirty plates piled on our table as we finished our dishes and sat there forever. There was no server in sight so I couldn't flag anyone down once we decided we had enough sitting around and wanted our bill, so I had to 'knock' my water off the table to get someone's attention.

Even then, it took a good 15 minutes to get our bill... and we were the only table in the restaurant. There's so many sushi places on Lonsdale; I won't be back to this one.

Smelly and dirty restaurant

My partner and I decided to go to this restaurant to settle our lunch when the Thai place nearby we wanted to go was closed for the day. We were assailed by the dried fermented smell of stained soy sauce on the tables when we went in. Then we were seated outside the kitchen.

I saw the blackened, soiled and dirty curtain that shielded the kitchen from view and had a gut reaction to leave the "restaurant"...the smell of old dried soy sauce still lingered where we sat. I pointed out the dirty curtain to my partner and he was appalled with the dirty kitchen floor that peeped out from beneath the dirty curtain. I dreaded to think of the kinds of food that was prepared in the kitchen.

The food came. At about $6 for a teriyaki box, it was fairly priced. But our tastebuds could not taste anything beyond the corrupted images of the "restaurant" that haunted us while we ate. Even as my partner asked for a glass of ice, I wondered about the hygiene of the ice cubes. Both of us left our meals unfinished.

The surprising thing is...the restaurant is not empty, but the clientele certainly don't look nor sound like the type who would be too concerned about the standard of hygiene of this place. We'll save ourselves future unease and won't visit this place any more.

I've been going to Haru Sushi since it opened. I used to recommend Haru to many people for excellent food with attentive service and great value. I hadn't been personally in a while, but was driving by today and decided to stop in. I was so disappointed with how down hill the restaurant had gone. We waited about 20 minutes before our order was taken, then it took another 30 minutes for our food to come. After bringing the food, our waitress never came back to check on us, and I ended up going up front to find her. I explained that we had been very patient, but that she must have forgotten about us, I asked for the bill at this time. She then took another 10 minutes to bring us the bill.

To summarize, I will never return to Haru. Don't waste your time.
