close your eyes and eat

The restaurant is crowded, noisy, and has little in the way of ambience or space for diners to sit comfortably, but I revelled in the sushi and sashimi. It was super-fresh, and very reasonably priced. The tempura isn't bad either. The food is way better than most downtown places. Even the daikon is freshly cut, and is part of the food, not just a throwaway garnish. The staff are quick and friendly, and if you can focus on the food, you will not be disappointed. I usually get the party platter and take it home to share with friends.

Will never eat here again

This place used to be our go to place for take out sushi. I liked that they delivered, and the guy that delivered was always nice and polite. They usually were early with delivery, until tonight. He was late, and when he delivered, we got our food, but it came with no soya sauce and no chopsticks! We started eating our sushi and i discovered that my spare ribs appetizer was raw! Not cooked! My son's gyoza tasted like over cooked egg...and the tuna in my roll looked not fresh and didn't taste right. $30.00 for take out, and it went in the garbage...what a waste.
I will never get take out from there again. I also agree with other reviews, that the restaurant looks quite run down and dirty. I have been there to pick up on occasion. And when I pick up, the place is usually empty.

For your own sake - don't eat here

My husband had fond memories of this place so we stopped in for lunch. Dark, run down. Green tea was terrific, but that was about it. The sushi just wasn't good - not well made, tiny bits of tuna rather than the normal roll proportions, and even the basic California roll tasted like mayo.

The walk to the bathroom was a bit scary due to the greasy slippery floors in the restaurant, kitchen walk-through, and bathroom hall. But that was nothing compared to the actual bathroom, which was filthy (cleaning record on the door had a most recent date of 6 months ago) and falling apart.

Seriously, for your own sake, avoid this place.

We usually pick up our Sushi over town but on the odd occaision when we want to pick up sushi locally we do take out with Gen Sushi. They are pricey compared to what we are used to over town but the quality and taste in the food makes up for it. They have the same things we get elsewhere but there are a few sushi dishes they have that they add something extra that makes it delicious.

Sushi to travel for - not

I tried this place on the basis of the reviews. It's Japanese fast food with friendly service, reasonable quality and affordable prices. A sushi restaurant in the true sense, however, it is not.
If artfully presented delicacies, with a range of tuna choices, preceded by hot towels and followed by attentive service is your concept, look elsewhere. Having said that, it is better than many other so-called sushi outlets.

This place is one of my favourite sushi places in North Van. The sushi is reasonably priced and is fresh! the service can be a bit inconsistent at times, but overall its not too bad. But they are usually VERY fast with bringing you the food.

Never going back

This was the worst restaurant experience I have EVER had. I got there at 6 o'clock... we walk in, everyone ignores us. Finally some guys says "table?" Well buddy, what do you think? Yes I am here to eat and I would like to sit... Fine give us a dirty table with cutlery for two when there is five of us. So after being completely ignored for forty minutes, without someone even asking us for our drink order, I leave the table and get our server and ask if we could order. She takes our order and comes back forgetting half the drinks, whatever, we don't care at that point, we just want to eat. Our food comes out, but she forgets my friends meal entirely. So my friend has no food and no drink. My friend says to our server that she needs her food... our server just forgot to write it down. So we finish, put our napkins on our plate to clearly show we are done, even start stacking the plates to show we would like them gone and our bill. NOTHING. We walk to the bar to get our bill because we didn't intend on waiting another forty minutes for our bill.
A synopsis of the experience: dirty restaurant, terrible atmosphere, terrible service and the food was bad too. Don't waste your time. I would recommend Honjin on lower Lonsdale, in fact I recommend anything other than this hole.

Used to be good but won't be back

We used to go there a lot for lunch with people from work and it was always busy. I took my dad there last week at lunch time and we were the only people there. We were there from 12:30 to 1:30 and only one more couple came in. The food was mediocre to poor and the ambiance is terrible; plastic covering the windows, dark, old furniture, faded hand printed signs on the walls. There are many, better sushi places on the North Shore so we won't be going back.

Ive only ever done take-out. Most of the time Im offered tea while I wait. Rolls are large (but not too large). The rice is always great. The wasabi is always fresh. the ginger isn't neon pink - its the dull yellow that tastes better. the take-out chop sticks are the wooden ones that are rounded, not square. can easily recommend scallop and eel. california roll: fake crab and avocado are melt-in-your-mouth delicious

Solid food in a noisy restaurant
By advcardio of northshore (15 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, September 15, 2007 - 5:20am [Dine in]

The bento boxes, tempura and sushi are solid but pricey for the overall Vancouver area. Staff are nice but often so busy they are slow in service (could use more front staffing).
The restaurant is popular with locals and families with dinner being very noisy.

The restauarant setting is nice but with the noise and slowness in service we are starting to look for something better and make a lower score in the ambiance rating.

We will stick with take-out and use Gen sushi as a 2nd choice.

Very good value for the money, with good fresh sushi. Little ambiance, but servers are alert and the tea flows as it should. Very busy location, perhaps the cause of the freshness, which is worth waiting if you have to. Highly recommended.

I like Gen. I really do. Except lately, the service has just taken a nosedive. I went in for what I hoped would be a fast dinner with my boyfriend and another friend of mine. The place was absolutely dead, though I wasn't surprised because the weather was terrible. After placing all our orders, I got my tempura relatively quickly, and it was what I was expecting. My boyfriend also got his teriyaki at a timely pace. However, where was our sushi? We waited, and we waited, and we waited... it must have been at least 40 minutes for a sushi order that wasn't even that large or complex, seeing as we hadn't even ordered rolls. What we got was "prettied up", except it felt incredibly out of place and I can't believe I'd waited so long for someone to practice their plating. The fish wasn't even cut that well; my boyfriend commented that some of his salmon had tough slivers of skin left on. I might still come in for takeout, but this is a skip if I have to endure another stupidly long wait for my sushi again.

I've been going to Gen Sushi for years and have never had a bad meal. The food is fresh and tasty and always delivered fast. Great yam roll and dynamite roll!

The decor leaves something to be desired- nothing fancy, just basic tables and chairs and sushi bar. Don't let the decor deter you- the food is worth it!

I've been to almost all of the Japanese restaurants on Lonsdale (and a couple of other places on the North Shore). However, the only restaurant I've returned to is Gen Sushi.

For the past 10+ years, I've been ordering bento boxes and the quality and quantity has remained the same. Though the price has gone up, its still very reasonable (about $6.95 for the lunch box).

I have had many interesting experiences at this restaurant it has been fantastic several times and other times it has been terrible and one time I even found a hair in one of the pieces. But it has all you can eat for $15 which is fairly cheap and great for if you have the "munchies". But overall I would say go for it its fairly cheap for the quality another place just down the street though SUSHI STATION is super cheap always tasty ive never had a bad experience there its quick overall sushi station is way better

Best Sushi on the N.Shore

Gen's is yes, crowded during dinner time but that is expected for a place that continually serves fresh, well-priced, fast, quality sushi.

I have been eating here for over 5 years and it is my #1 default place for sushi in Vancouver. The same staff has been there forever, they are kind, quick and friendly. You are welcome to stroll in the back door, they are VERY welcoming to children and families and again, the food is amazing...always.

The tuna + salmon sashimi is so thick and fresh. Ebi Sunomon is perfect and refreshing. Termpura is not overly fried. Party trays are great too. Gen's has catered a few of my big parties (pick-up party trays).

IF you are really concerned about crowdedness, not to fear...Gen's opened up its restaurant to the store next door for the overlow of customers. I love this place.

No good recent reviews for a reason....

I ordered a take out of yakisoba with tofu and broccoli instead of meat or seafood. I also asked for packets of soy sauce and hot sauce, not having any condiments in my fridge since my recent move to the North Shore. I didn't pay much attention to the price, and left a generous tip, considering it was a pick-up order. When I returned home, there were no condiments, a less than what would be expected amount of the requested tofu and broccoli (the tofu being hard, overcooked and greasy) and the price was surprisingly much higher than any of the other "soba" dishes, as the menu included in my bag stated.

Given the numerous choices of "sushi" restaurants in the two-block radius of my apartment, I will definitely NOT return to Gen Sushi. Lesson to be learned - when the competition is THAT numerous, you better be good - EVERY TIME (if you want repeat business and good reviews!).
