Has gone WAY down

This used to be a great Lower Lonsdale spot to go but I believe there has been a management change in the last year or so. I've been there a couple of times recently and it is definately a huge disappointment. The staff don't seem to care if you are there or not and do not make you feel welcome. The last straw was last week when we went there and the place was full of loud, drunk people who took over the whole place, constantly walking in and out of the restaurant for whatever reason. When we were about to leave, a fight broke out outside and you could hear breaking glass on the street. We had to wait in the restaurant until things calmed down because who wants to leave a place and get caught in the middle of a brawl? Pathetic. Management and staff were oblivious. I would expect to see this behaviour in a downtown club but unacceptable for a North Van restaurant. Will never return. The previous management, staff, food quality and menu are greatly missed!

Arrived for a table of 6 a little bit concerned only 4 other people were there. Bartender/server/owner (BSO) greeted us, drinks ordered, asked for coke w/lemon received coke no lemon. Unfortunately, as soon as we sat down & ordered a wave of about 20 barely legal kids came in, turned on the T.V. to hockey and took over 1/2 the place...be it a small place. Kids were walking in and out bringing in their own coffee and coming back with bags of chips. The food was warm to cold Prawns Madrid (tasty but cold) Crab Cakes (don't bother) Truffled Scallops (should just be called scallops) etc. Decided to order 2 more plates (shrimp wonton tower and sesame chicken) for some reason the BSO decided to clear our table. As soon as the B/S/O left with our dirty dishes he immediately came back w/ the wonton tower which left me & my friends a bit worried. Fast forward 5 minutes w/plates - the deepfried wontons were stale Oh Yeah!! Sometime in between we ordered another round of drinks i coke with LEMON and received coke no lemon AGAIN. Sesame Chicken comes over a bed of salad however we have plates but no untensils. I guess sometime during the evening it changed from fork & knife to just finger foods. The chicken was clearly freezer burned. Had to go to the bar for the bill. Out of no where this girl who was sitting on some guys lap beside us brings us the bill. Was she working this whole time? All i know is that she had our bill in one hand and a beer in the other.

I noticed this restaurant just as they were putting the finishing touches on it and wanted to try it out because it looked pretty hot and the menu looked interesting. I went in with my boyfriend and sat at the bar. We sat there for quite a few minutes before being acknowledged by anyone (although they were standing right in front of us). This set the tone for the entire experience. Yes, the people working out front look pretty good but they don't know how to treat paying customers (go down the road to Burgoo and take a lesson from them). We had sauteed vegetables in truffle oil which was done without heart, soul, or seasoning. So, bland not even the expensive oil could save it. We had some other deep fried spring roll type appy that was so memorable that I've completely forgotten it. We had a couple of drinks and 2 appys for $40. Since we didn't get greeted when we entered the restaurant, we weren't surprised not to be thanked or acknowledged when we left. We often go to restaurants for an appy at the bar or a light meal to check things out and when we decide it's up to snuff we've spent up to $400 on dinner for two (with a very good bottle of wine). Too bad Fiction Five won't be seeing one more red cent from us. Not because of the food (because I'm sure some of the food must be good) but because of the attitude.

Poor service

Went there just last night to see what's the hype all about. Ambiance was decent but not great. It was probably late so it wasn't too busy but we still waited for 15 minutes before the server came over to take our drink order. The food came out slow as I think due to they are lack of staff. Ordered crab cake but the server told us they ran out of them 15 minutes later, no biggie. All the dishes were decent except those 2 most expensive dishes, the salmon and the lamb chops, both of them all overcooked and dried, haven't have a dry lamb chops before. Wanted to order some more food but waited for another 20 minutes and still no server came by so we decided to go to the cashier to ask for our bill. Pretty bad service

When Fiction5 opened in North Vancouver it used to be a fave spot for me and my friends. However, there has been a change of management since that time and the food, drinks, and service have vastly declined.

Was there a few weeks ago on a Tuesday night (cheap martini night) and the waitress was terrible; slow, forgot our orders, seemed more preoccupied with her friends that were there and sat down to chat with them over and over again.

The food used to be fresh and innovative, but has now become bland, greasy, and reminds me of bad fast food.

The managers/bartenders are not friendly, curt, and do not make you feel welcome at all. It's a shame really. The North Shore needs a place that Fiction5 used to be. We have ruled this spot out of our regular repetoir of watering holes.

Bartender/ Owner/ Server waiting to impress

I read a previous review and was surprised at how closely it reflected our thoughts on the place. The Bartender/ Owner/ server basically did his job, but wasn't that attentive. Other than a couple of folks at the bar we were the only people in the place. It seeme like the guy has been trying really hard to get a classy lounge together for his friends... and if they were there we might have seen it come together. The food was good, but trying so hard to be gourmet and fancy that some of the the freshness was lost... If I was younger and there on a packed night, I might be impressed. Kudos to the ownere, though, having your own restaurant is a lot of hard work.

Good Food and Martinis for the Value

It looks as though this is a place to pack full of 25 to 30 year olds on a Thur/Fri/Sat night. The martinis are reasonably priced compared to the $10 or $12 you'd pay at Brown's. The food was good and again reasonably priced. The YAM's are fantastic. The service was good. The ambiance is ok, it was too industrial and DIY looking. Overall, I thought it was all good.

Yaletown Experience Without the Attitude
By yummymommy of North Vancouver (2 Reviews)

Superbowl Sunday I went to Fiction Five at the recommendation of friends who live in the area, after watching the game. Joined by a friend from Coquitlam, I feel I can speak on his behalf, and say we were both delightfully surprised at the modern decor that was extremely comfortable - it felt like a little piece of Tribeca (or for those less travelled - a little piece of Yaletown) right here in North Vancouver, minus the attitude. Our server greeted us right away and made such excellent martini recommendations, I felt obliged to try another, which was mixed to perfection. I had the Chorizo Quesadilla while my friend had a Chicken Quesadilla (we were quiet adventurous) but I will definitely be back to try the Brie appetizer someone ordered at the next table. Our food was great and our server checked with us at appropriate times throughout our experience. Our server was attentive but not annoying, the setting was perfect and the price was affordable. Perfect place for those close to the North Shore who think that Cactus Club and Earls were "so five years ago" and detest the commute/parking/and price in Yaletown and Kits. Fiction Five is a place I would feel comfortable entertaining my uber-trendy clients, having drinks with the girls, or possibly on a date?! Go try it for yourself!

Went to Fiction Five on Friday with a bunch of my friends for some drinks. Cozy atmosphere and awesome service (cute girl too). Can anyone compete with $3 shooter specials?! I had the coconut wasabi prawns to eat, really good. I will definitely be back again. Great place to go with a bunch of friends to hang out, eat or just drink.

Good Place to go drink and relax

Went there for my birthday. The food was good. Particularly the Shrimp/Mango wanton tower. The service was fine but nothing spectacular. The decor is more urban and not very warm. I would go back for the food if nothing else.

Good place to chill out and have some food and drinks with friends.
