At least the service has improved....or was it just the server?

First time we can here was when it opened. Wasn't at all impressed with the server or the food. Had the Pasta package for one and ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo...very bland. And the server seemed like she was on Cloud9 because she pretty much ignored us the whole time.

Gave it another shot today, this time sat in the lounge area (which was nice), I ordered the individual spinach & cheese dip to start, but the flatbread was stale (apparently they had other people mention that as well). I would suggest ordering it with chips instead. They heat them up, and tastes really good with the dip!

Had the Roasted Chicken and Provolone Panini as my entree. Sounded good on the menu, but when it got to my table it was warm and within a few minutes...cold. The chicken was cold and the provolone cheese wasn't completely melted. Not was I expected a Panini to be, so I returned it and didn't end up ordering anything else.

We had a great server though! Her service and attitude compensated for the not-so-good food we've had at ESM.

Maybe third times the charm?

Buddy and I decided to check this place out a few months ago because it was fairly new in the hood and had excellent views of the city. Thursday afternoon around 1:30ish, the place was almost empty. After standing around for a few minutes waiting to be seated and not being acknowledged we decided to seat ourselves. Ten full minutes went by before we were given menus. Fifteen minutes later our drinks finally arrived, and our orders were taken. Nearing 2:15 our lunch was served. We both had the spaghetti and meatballs. While we did eat most, it was nothing to make Chef Boyardee quit his day job over. Just a step above noodles and ketchup actually. My friends pitbull even refused to eat the leftovers. Finishing things up I still couldn't fathom why it took 30 minutes for two plates of spaghetti with meatballs with virtually no one else in the place. Quite a head-shaking experience. Maybe the chef/waitress was out having an extended smoke break. If you do happen to indulge in the all -you-can-eat special it might take awhile for that second or third plate to come around. True story, I had a few friends come in a week before us on a slow day and after waiting nearly 20 minutes with not so much as a smile, got up from the table and left the place. That should have been warning enough. The meal was easy on the wallet though, and they fixed the place up real nice. Great view of the city from the patio for some drinks in the summertime. If there is a next time, I'll probably try the pizza. Earth to East Side Mario's, come in East Side Mario's!

Italian American done right!

**I realize I've rated this restaurant quite highly and I based this on my experiences at other similar restaurants**

I was really excited when I heard that North Vancouver would be getting an East Side Mario's as I have eaten at other locations in eastern Canada and loved the food. It's unfortunate how we get skipped by many of the big name chain restaurants here in Vancouver (Red Lobster, Olive Garden, Popeyes Chicken, just to name a few) don't get me wrong I don't think these kinds of places are the best form of dining but they do fill a specific niche quite well.

Anyway on to my experence at our own East Side Mario's! We had a group of about 10 on Saturday night and I failed to make reservations early in the day. Despite being fully booked for the night with multiple large party groups the owner/manager Raj went out of his way to accomodate us and we were seated in the lounge right away. As I said in the title the food is Italian American and at ESM they do it right! Large portions, plenty of tasty cheese and great flavor all at resonable prices. I ordered the stuffed mushroom caps and the classic spaghetti 'n' meatballs with a few pints of pale ale;) The mushrooms were delicious, hot and creamy with plenty of baked cheese and the spaghetti was great as well.

I forgot to mention that many of the entrees come with all you can eat garlic bread, Caesar salad (not chintzy salad either, with great dressing and lots of real bacon) and a remarkable Italian wedding soup! ESM has a fairly large menu and there honestly is something for everyone on it. A real food snob may overlook ESM but Italian American has never been about flashy/trendy cuisine, it's fairly simple great tasting comfort food that reminds you of home. I won't go into detail about all of the different dishes I have tried during previous ESM visits but I can assure you that everything I have had has more than lived up to my expectations.

To sum it up, North Vancouver's ESM is excellent, great food, fast friendly service, good prices and a clean comfortably decorated interior with a great view of the water and downtown. I think the genre of Italian American food has been tarnished somewhat by large chains like Boston Pizza,Kelsey's etc., but ESM is in a league of its own. If you are looking for a great meal out or just a quick drink at a decent price before heading out definitely give ESM a shot, you won't be disappointment. You can park for free for 2hrs in the Lonsdale Quay parking lot and ESM is just up the stairs. I think we are really lucky to have an ESM here in North Vancouver and I as well as all of my friends will definitely be back! Enjoy.
