Yes, this is a tapas restaurant. I get that! However, tapas should still manage to satisfy the diner, in other words, give quality and a satisfying meal. Unfortunately, Deuce falls short here.
The ambiance is outstanding. It's been beautifully decorated and designed to make you feel as if you are in a swank downtown joint. The service was a strong complement to the decor: not overly intrusive, but present when needed.
The food is also very good. The flavours are a nice mix and the drinks are excellent.
However, the portions are very small for the price points. $15 for three scallops and $14 for four pieces of veg. lasagna is steep (not to mention, why use a deep fried piece of noodle on the lasagna? Was it just to make the neat little stacks? It made it more like a nacho than pasta!).
Dessert was good. We loved the mini concept that they use, as it allowed each of us to order three as a sampler!
I will not be returning here except for drinks and snacks. As a for a full meal, Deuce just doesn't fill the belly!
I am not big on big portions, so I have no complaints whatsoever about the quantity of food here. The flavours are exquisite; OK, perhaps the truffle oil was a tad overused, but I'm a pushover for it. The Mac-n-Cheese is to die for, and rich enough to fill any normal appetite. I suggest going with at least 3 other people so you can taste a greater variety.
The decor is visually very cool; minimalist and retro. But the seats in the front with low lounge-like tables are difficult to eat at, and exposed to the chill of the front door. The bar and back area is best if you can get a corner. The tables down the middle are small and exposed for very little privacy.
Prices are high. By the time you've tried enough items to satisfy your curiosity (and in some cases, hunger), you've spent a wad. Wine prices are not cheap either.
I've been there 3 times and will go again, but the prices will keep my visits less frequent than I'd like.
Deuce is my ideal kind of restaurant. Great design, awesome atmosphere, contemporary and outstanding service. The server was phenomenal and had such a good sense of humour! The menu is exciting and unique. It is fresh, modern and different. The problem is the food. They just did not get it quite right. We had the Dine Out menu and I ordered the Deuce Salad to start. The menu stated that it came with 'Qualicum Sunshine feta and pomegranate avocado vinaigrette'. Mine came with goat’s cheese and balsamic dressing. It tasted good, but what were they doing in the kitchen??? Next were the Dungeness crab fritters. I was really looking forward to these, but they were barely warm and just tasteless. My husband ordered the beef short ribs for the main dish - they were outstanding. They melted in your mouth and had a great flavour. I had the mac and cheese which was not so good. It had lumps of very fatty, undercooked pancetta in it. The pancetta just ruined the mac and cheese. Desserts ok and wine menu excellent. I would give Deuce another try, as I think it has so much potential. The kitchen just needs to have the same quality as the rest of the restaurant.
Myself and other friends who live in the area have been in a few times since this place opened and we've enjoyed it everytime. I don't think alot of people get the concept of what there doing. If you go in with 6 people and order six items {reviewer down a couple} of course your going to leave hungry. When we go in usually four of us we get about 12-15 plates and it works out perfect. As for pricing I have noticed they dropped there prices since they have been open, and besides what do expect for the quality of food they put out. Its still cheaper then any other high end small plate restaurant downtown. The only problem I have sometimes is the service and the knowledge of the servers especially when it comes to wine. All in all me and my friends will be back again and again......keep it Deuce....
I concur with the first review in many ways, except we won't be back for a very long time, if again. 6 of us went here on a Saturday. The 6 tapas we order streamed slowly in over a period of 30 minutes. Not the way tapas are generally served. And the prtions were sightly, but other than the salad, were quite small. if you've got $2.50 to throw away, order the cheescake just to see how small a portion can be.While that was jot expensive, yo go "Why bother?" when the thing comes. server didn't have ti together and obviously the kitch couldn't handle a regualr saturday night crowd. Took us 3 hours to eat, have afew drinks and get out. By the end I hunted down my server to try and pay the bill which was high. Too bad. More places like this would be appreciated in North Van, but thismpace needs ALOT of work to get to be one to compete. Less lights, more music wouldn't hurt either. As the mood is porly set. Very disappointing.
We tried out this new spot and overall it was good. Main complaint is the prices and lack of food. I ordered a glass of wine ($11) and got a tiny glass- no more than 3-4 ounces. The food tasted good and the decor is wonderful (arguably one of the best in North Van). I'm not sure if I would return because there are much better places to go for the money but I do wish them well in the neighborhood.
Not quite sure if we got the theme of this restaurant. Yes, I know it was tapas, but we still left hungry. The food was just okay not great. What's with the odd numbers. A table of two gets 5 samplings on a plate. ...Yes it says to order extra but for a first time visitor didn't really know what to expect. I felt like I was a judge on Iron Chef America the whole night. The name is Deuce, samplings should come even numbered. I don't know, left confused, not satisfied and not sure if we would return. Reminded us of a Restaurant Makeover. Sorry.....
We had a group of 7 girls for a dine out. At first the place was empty and we thought, oh no, might not be good cuz nobody's here. But the service starts off great. Our server was definitely friendly and helpful.
The food was not bad tho one of our friends warned us about the food not being too good. However, the girls were happy about the place. The food was great. The Mac & Cheese was good but nothing WOW and I couldn't finish it. The baby spinach salad was not bad but just an average salad. The crab fritters were not bad, tasty but little bit dry. At the end, the dessert was SO GOOD. OMG and it was SO TINY! We were not happy about the dessert becuz it was too good to be that tiny! It was a 4-course menu so not bad! We were all pretty full.
Small portions but big prices. For the crowd that wants to fit in.
This place certainly gets a big profit margin considering the small morsels of food served at big prices. I won't be going there for dinner again.
i went in to grab some dessert to take home and share with the bf. so i ordered the dessert plate....and they are TINY!!! its actually a one bite dessert! they were pretty good but its kinda hard to say since there wasnt much to them. if we're craving some dessert we'll go get gelato or to true confections instead.
I live close to this place, been there once. We started with a Blueberry Mohito and Martini, which was good. Than we order a bottle a Desert Hill gamay, was also good. We ordered 4 different dishes and two desserts. After all we were still hungry.
Too much money for too small food. I felt we got ripped off.
I would go back if they lower the price by 50%.
I like the looks of this place. Good staff and good vibe. Our server did a good job to make sure we had what we needed. I had a martini (Manhattan) and it was a small quantity. The taste was good, but half the serving at similar restaurants. My girlfriend had a mojito that had too much ice and not enough juice.
The food was good but too small and pricey. 4 prawns cost you $14. After a $90 bill and still hungry we decided to go home and eat some more.
I recommend it only for drinks and tapas (expect to pay a pretty penny though)
Went with a few friends the other day. I had the salad, spareribs and two of their dessert selections. All the food was tasty and excellent! It did take them a while to get our food out to us, despite not being busy at all, but when it did come, it didn't disappoint. They have these desserts that you get for $2.50 each. They are perfect for after dinner because they are not too big. A friend of mine and I shared a dessert platter which was all four selections. They were all wonderful! I will happily go back the next time I find myself on Lonsdale!
There is time to have a good conversation between courses, you get to share plates, the atmosphere is trendy, and you don't leave feeling like a stuffed pig, so I think this is the perfect special date place.
We took our 3 year old, which I know is a faux pas, but we don't have a baby sitter. Instead of snears, the hostess and server were falling all over themselves to make her comfortable. They made off-menu suggestions for her immediately without us asking, which she really enjoyed.
The food was great. Loved the squash soups and short ribs. The portions are small, but your supposed to enjoy a few courses and share plates. if you can afford to do this, and have good company along, you will enjoy your dinner immensely. This is the point of the tapas concept and trendy atmosphere.
Even though it's not competing on quantity portions, as many are in the neighbourhood, I hope it will be very successful into the future.
We went out for Dine out Vancouver, why they even bother with dessert is beyond me. We were served a 1x1 inch square of cheesecake. Why bother with the plate, just bring it on a spoon. For $28, not worth the portion size, had to hit McDonalds on the way home. The meal itself, was tasty and the salads were divine. The ambience was fine, and a good selection of wines
I can't really understand some of the previous reviews complaining about the small portions. We were stuffed when we left. The tab (with 18% tip and tax) came to $130 for two people. That included 2 drinks each, 6 different dishes and the dessert sampler. I can't think of too many higher end restaurants where I could do that for $65 bucks a head. Anyways.....the food was excellent. Especially the duck twofer, the lasagna, and the mac and cheese. Service was decent, but nothing exceptional. Can't wait to be in North Van again so I have an excuse to try some of the dishes we didn't get to. We will definately be back.
The place has a nice atmosphere, but the food is too pricey and the portions are too small.
I went there on a Friday night with my girlfriends and we ordered: lasagna, mini crab cakes, firecracker shrimp, ribs and salads and the portions were tiny. Dessert was delicious but also tiny. We were still starving when we left, but had spent so much money we ended up going through the McDonald's drive through on our way home. I don't recommend this place if you are hungry.
Lovely place to go for drinks and snacks; We went for sushi afterwards. Everything we ate was fantastic, especially the scallop dish and the duck with poached pears. Ambiance was nice- we sat outside. Our server came to the table so many times it seemed intrusive, but otherwise very good.
I noticed Deuce on my commute and, as I live in the Lonsdale area and am a 'foodie,' decided that I must sample their wares. The service was great - you can tell that the staff are all bright and optmistic, are interested in what you think of Deuce and the food and drinks - without being invasive. The seating arrangements are varied and comfortable (back room, bar, front room). The lighting is lovely and golden and would be great 'date lighting.' A bit of live music (which they are considering) and it would be the creme de la creme of Lonsdale ambience!
Duece offer a menu of luxurious, smaller plates that are ideal for sharing. I tried the Deuce salad, tuna tartare two-ways (the Asian version was excellent!), and the crab risotto balls covered in fondue. Everything was gorgeously presented and was a lingering taste sensation. A lot of their produce is organic and/or locally produced and you can almost taste the pride that goes into every single bite.
Though it is a little pricey, I enjoy small, tasty dishes and Duece certainly soothes my appetite. I look forward to returning to further gastronomic delights!
