Arriving with my 88 year old mother we were immediatley greeted and patiently attended to. The Contry Pate was excellent with the warm baguette. Sole, Chicken breast and Halibut were outstanding and served on extremely hot plates. Coffee was delish, and in a piping hot cup. The apple tart was tasty and enormous. We can't wait to return.
We dined here on a Tuesday evening. Very quiet evening for the restaurant. The waiter was great and looked after all of our needs. He was warm and friendly and we enjoyed the banter with him. Outstanding Pate and brie salad for an appetizer followed by a great rack of lamb. We completed the evening with a fresh plum tarte.
The only feedback that we would like to provide is that replacing the candles on the table with small battery powered lights did not add to the atmosphere. Bring back candles.
We eat here regularly and have never been disappointed. Fresh food, freshly prepared, simply yet artfully presented, and consistent in quality, this is French country cooking without pretension yet with panache. Chef’s seafood dishes are always excellent and reflect the season. Some menu items are staples and others change according to availability and chef’s fancy. The lamb is fabulous! The wait staff are knowledgeable and efficient; they are friendly and helpful without being fawning or obsequious. Staff and chef are low-key with quirky senses of humour, and they never overshadow the main reason for being there: good food in comfortable surroundings. If you are used to eating in Vancouver, you will find the prices very reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food. It’s a relaxed, warm place to enjoy very good food at a decent price.
Highly recommended restaurant - delicious steak/frites, excellent sauces, fresh salads, catch of the day ,fabulous pate, and of course desserts fit for Sarkozy himself. I've been many times and have always enjoyed the high quality food, the artistic atmosphere and the fact that I don't feel like I'm in NV. High praise from the progeny of an Italian mamma.
I happened to be in the area with a friend and I am always open to trying places.
We entered and right away noticed this strange musty smell just in the background, mold maybe, it was odd it. It took a couple of minutes for anyone to great us and when the waiter finally noticed us he was unsure if he should take us or not. I'm gathering it was close to the time that lunch was finishing and he really just didn't handle it well, but we did get sat and got menus.
You know your off to a good start when the menus prices have little stickies on them to reflect a price change but we ventured forth.
Service was indifferent the server kinda reminded me of manuel from the show faulty towers but with less drive and less teeth.
I had the ham and cheese crepe and man this thing was salty. Poor quality ham, pasty over-reduced cream and cheese made this probably one of the worst meals in a long time. My date had the steak, cooked ok, but a poor job on the reduction and the vegetables aside from being over-cooked were old and some of them off.
overall poor, with many other options on lower lonsdale and this would not be my first choice. Its to bad could be a great spot
I have been eating at this establishment, both lunch and dinner for a number of years. It has sometimes been spectacular, sometimes just very good, but NEVER less than an incredible and unexpected bargain.
The fish especially is excellent and always perfectly cooked, Chef Gerard Page has a deft touch with seafood and even when the restaurant is at its most hectic, on Friday and Saturday nights, the fish never disappoints. Even in a mixed casserole each morsel seems to have been carefully timed and never ever overcooked.
This restaurant is an amazing find for the accomplished palate. The menu is rather limited, reflecting the location and clientele I suppose, but I have found it to represent one of the best of the little known bargains, not only in the city but at least on the west coast.
This is simple French influenced country/bistro food at its very best and at a reasonable price. Try the Bouillabaisse. At under $20 it is a steal at dinner and even less expensive and therefore an even bigger surprise for lunch.
The only real criticism I have is the location which is somewhat less than ideal but even there it does remind me of so many Parisian Bistros I have known...true working class places serving tried and true dishes which are uncomplicated and use fresh ingredients. Oh, and the wine list is rather limited too and seems to be aimed at a lower cost point but there are a few selections available which are more expensive but in my opinion better match the food.
I really do not understand how anyone could walk away disappointed from this, one of the finest little gems in the lower mainland.
My husband and I decided to try this restaurant for two reasons - we live close by and we had an Entertainment card. I had read the reviews which were quite varied, but decided to give it a chance.
We were seated quickly, and the menu was brought. Obviously the food choices change from time to time, as the menu items were listed on a blackboard and put on a chair for viewing. This did not include descriptions of how each item was prepared. Our server was new, and although very pleasant, was not too familar with each item. We ordered the veal, and venison, and a bottle of French white wine. The wine could have been more chilled. The food was pleasant, but definitely not spectacular. Both meals looked the same, in a dark sauce, one pretty much tasted the same as the other, except for mild difference in texture of the meat.
We presented the Entertainment card with the credit card for payment, and it was not honoured. We questioned this, and could not really understand the reason given - something like we needed to spend $30 per entree to qualify. I thought perhaps I has missed something in the Entertainment book, but did not want to query this in the restaurant. I was told that I should consider the situation "a blessing as I could return to the restaurant"! I thought this most odd to say the least.
I checked the Entertainment Book on returning home, and the description was clear - "Up to $17 discount when an entree of equal or greater value was ordered" which was the case. I phoned the restaurant, and they agreed, and said to return with my bill and they would rectify the situation. I did this, and received the money, but no apology and no concern at all about what happened. This, to me, seems a very strange way to treat a customer, and I will certainly not be returning to this restaurant.
I would suggest if you have an Entertainment Card you are hoping to use here, to be clear it should be honoured.
I pass this restaurant everyday on my way to and from work. It looks charming. I went there for dinner one evening. The service and ambiance were great. The food was bad. I order the chicken cordon bleu since I thought this must be their specialty. I was wrong! I've had better cordon bleu from a ready to eat box. My date did not enjoy his meal either. I'm not a picky eater at all, but the food was so bad I felt the need to start up an account with dinehere.ca.
Here I sit "Broken Hearted". Made the mistake of trusting a word of mouth review on this restaurant. It has been in existence since 1997, so I figured it must be good as the location is odd, making it a "destination" place. WRONG!! The food is incredibly weak and overpriced beyond acceptance. Starters of Escargot - rubbery & odd tasting, Onion Tart "Parisienne" - flabby & bland. Mains - Rabbit "Provencal" - have you ever been to Provence?? Not even close to what I recall of Rabbit dishes in Provence. Special - Roast Leg of Lamb - Laughingly, "Roast" was a slice of lamb leg cooked independantly of the rest of the leg & quite inadequately cooked at that. Tough, tasteless & poached, if you ask me. Both dishes served with very undercooked & bland small potatoes. Very overcooked asparagus and also accompanied by a strange sourkrauty thingy that was more Germanic than French & in my opinion, added as a plate filler. Weak wine list & weak food. Only pleasant thing was the space. Really pretty with local art displayed.
We started with a beet and smoked salmon salad and a cognac pate. The first was overpriced for what seemed like pink salmon and canned beets. The pate was nice and a generous size serving.
Hoping to waken memories of lunch at Brasserie Georges in Lyon, I ordered the baked onion soup. Instead of reminding me of that great French restaurant, I remembered why I don't usually order baked onion soup. My companion's leek soup was fairly ordinary.
The main course included snapper in a caper sauce. It too was decent but not a standout dish. Bland sauce does not elevate a bland fish.
The server seemed a little put out by a request to refill the tiny bread basket. Either that or reluctance was an attempt at humour.
The restaurant is small but brightly decorated with artwork offered for sale. The art is like the food; pretty good but far from great.
Having eaten at the CORDON BLEU CAFE numerous times over the years I find the negative reviews odd.
Chef Gerard treats his customers very well, usually coming out front to personally meet his patrons.
The staff is fun, respectful and courteous.
The menu changes with the seasons and the hundreds of return customers are a testament to this establishments quality.
The prices are very moderate as anyone who dines internationally will tell you.
I am sure that there is the occasional problem, as occurs anywhere, but these are promptly taken care of, usually to the customers satisfaction.
Unfortunately for many restaurants many customers are unreasonable and prone to rants.
Luckily the Cordon Bleu has a loyal and growing customer base by doing the things that are right.
Good food at a reasonable prices.
I and my many friends will continue to frequent this restaurant and I hope that readers of these reviews can see through the negative nellies and join us for a nice, quiet, respectful lunch or dinner.
And for the negative reviewers I can only say that it is easy to lash out anonymously. I would like to be able to review their work and comment on it online.
But of course this would never happen would it.
My mother, girlfriend and I on reading reviews on the web and seeing it in the Entertainment guide decided to try it out on my mom's last night in BC. In short: bland, overpriced food. My girlfriend had a salmon and beet salad. The beets were from a can. The smoked Salmon was too chewy and tasted strange. The waiter was rude, argumentative, and used mocking tones after we made mention of the salad. The ambiance lacked warmth and had no defining character. If the service was excellent, we may have given it another chance. Too pretentious for a sub par French Restaurant. Never Again.
We waited at the door for quite some time ,then the waitress said to us do you want a seat? She handed us some menues at the door and said there is a table over there in the corner. she did not seat us. The waiter that served us was worst. he did not check on us once, did not ask if we wanted more drinks, slow service. food was just o.k. I ordered seafood fetucini and it was mostly mussels. My husband had the chicken and got one leg and a few veggies he didn't like, at a cost of $19. Portions were small.
Based on the 'glowing' reports here we decided to have dinner at the Cordon Bleu. Upon our arrival, the premises, ambience, board written menu made us feel like we could be in for a unique and special treat. Unfortunately that all ended when the food arrived. The crab cakes seemed like it was heated in a microwave before serving and did not have the crispiness of freshly made crab cakes. The Cordon Bleu paella was the worst paella we have ever tasted. The clams and mussels had a very bad smell, the chunks of boiled chicken looked and tasted very unappetizing. Overall the paella was very bland and tasteless and soggy.
I cannot echo the same positive food sentiments as the other reviewers here.
First of all, the decor of the Cordon Bleu makes it different. The colours and wall hangings lets one look and and linger while enjoying something different in Restaurant decoration.
The daily menu is a chalk written black board brought to your table and left on an easel to peruse; different again. This is in addition to a traditional menu.
Whenever I have friends visiting or local friends to share an evening out, the food served here makes this restaurant a first choice. Just delightful presentation but most imprtant, the taste buds are more than satisfied especially if you find a wine you like to enhance the experience. I truly recommend the place. Service could be little bit softer and more professional while the location is a bit questionable.
Try it, I am sure you will enjoy and return.
I went there on a Wednesday night, I don't know if there was any particular reason for the lack of any other table in the entire place. My Dad was with me and said that he goes there often, and it is usually busy.. so maybe the ambiance is better on busier nights. Regardless, the food was fantastic, rich and creamy dressing on the ceasar salad, and desert was delicious. I loved the specials all written out on a blackboard which is brought around to your table, bistro style. Our dinner was really delicious, well presented and all in all it was a very enjoyable meal.
