Casual Gourmet Bistro is a quaint bistro with not-so-quaint food. Casual Gourmet's menu is inviting and delicious. A friendly atmosphere, great food, perfect place for a date, a family dinner, lunch, or catching up.
My wife and myself have just returned from a sabbatical. We decided to visit our favorite restaurant, the Casual Gourmet! Upon our arrival we were a little disappointed when we realized that Peter had retired, however the new chef surprised us with a very welcoming visit! He made sure our food was ok and asked how the service was. What a charming young man! We are so glad that the new chef was so welcoming! We both had the Kung Pao. It was the perfect spiciness, and crisp cooked veggies just made out meal a memorable one. We will defiantly return, great to be back home and great to visit the bistro again!!!

We paid full price for a Kung Pao Chicken ($18.50) and a Beef Stroganoff ($24). Either food dish would have been overpriced at one tenth its actual cost, given the kitchen's execution. The latter had been a long time favorite of our family at Casual Gourmet so that was a disappointing sign of change. Both dishes were remarkably poor. Kung Pao included burned noodles and overcooked, dry nuggets of tasteless chicken chunks covered with a muddy sauce with no spark. The dessert table provided a tasty lemon tart so not all was lost.
A restaurant must have a commitment to quality in each plate served if they aim to survive. Lose the desire to serve excellent food and you will lose your customers and your business soon after.
I used to live in North Vancouver and go to the Casual Gourmet twice a week,
the food and staff was great at the time under chef peter.
Resecntly i decied to take a work partner to the casual gourmet as he and his wife had never been before.
The resturant was just under half full so not really busy. after getting drinks and and an appy we ordered our main coarse.
This was unfortunatly the worst meal i have ever had for a few reasons. The first was my partners steak was cooked incorrectly and bland. when we sent it back as it is an open kitchen we could hear the chef making comments about out taste in food and our ability to understand cooking of any quality. After my meal came and i found it not to be the same quality that i remembered i asked to see the chef. expecting to talk to Chef peter. To my dismay he had sold the resturant to the same young chef who had justupset our party with his arrogant comments moments earlier. This got me only more fustration, as all i recieved was a bunch of excuses.
i will never eat at this resturant again. what was once a great place to share a meal with friends has become a poor imitation. be warned.....
When I went to this restaurant, I was extremely pleasantly surprised by the really excellent food. It actually totally blew me away. I had the seared tuna on nicoise salad, and it was, literally bursting with flavour. The best I've ever had.
I had no idea such a simple meal could taste so good. The salad was very fresh, the dressing piquant, the potatoes crispy , the tuna perfectly seared. My companion had the lamb curry. Also excellent; tasty and well spiced without being overpowering. An all round wonderful experience, in a very cosy atmosphere with a nice vibe.
My only criticism would be that the service could've been a bit better, and it is , in my opinion, a bit on the pricey side.
But, for most people, the food and ambience would be well worth the price.
Found this gem of a place in a small stripmall in North Vancouver.
Just off the Second Narrows. Causal Gourmet had spectacular food with
great presentation, large portions great sauces and taste of everything is divine.
A real surprise and a real gem found. Not your ordinary place to eat.
One can taste the quality and care they put in their dishes. Fresh ingredients
and a great little menu that shows diversity and is casual in the same sentence.
Seating is casual and comfortable with great friendly service. This is a must try
Recommend to all!
The Casual Gourmet Bistro is a good restaurant if you want higher quality take out.
There are, however, a few downfalls to this establishment. The worst is the chicken. The breasts are flat, rubbery, and obviously frozen. The texture just makes it borderline disgusting. The pasta is very ordinary and nothing to write home about.
There are great dishes, however. The Beef Stroganoff is very good as are the beef tenderloin medallions.
The pricing is a bit high for the quality/amount of food you get.
All in all... meh.
A few years ago I thought this place was the bomb, but recently I've found that the quality of the food has gone down. The veg don't get steamed with fennel seed any more. You have to request roasted potatoes, and the meat is portioned smaller and now poorly marbled.
Yet the prices have gone up.
Most recently I ordered a steak sandwich with salad. The salad was overrun with onion, and the steak was so tough and grisly that I had to sharpen my teeth to eat it.
They need to get back on track if they want to justify charging what they do for their dinner entrees.
Casual Gourment Bistro has great food for a reasonable price. The sandwiches at lunch time are to die for: fresh ingredients, always prepared when you order, and delicious.
Considering that Casual Gourmet caters almost daily for the studios right next to Park and Tilford, it's amazing that the quality of food is so consistent.
I did not know this place even existed, until i heard from a friend how good the food was. I grew up in North Van so obviously this place is a success through word of mouth alone because I never heard of it prior to my friend telling me. Since they have limited seating I suggest making a reservation during peek hours. I tried lunch and had a chicken schnitzel burger that was unbelievable. The potato salad is amazing and I was told all the dishes are made by the chef Peter.
Lunch was so good, I tried the dinner, and the new york steak I had was like eating at Hyes Steakhouse downtown Vancouver at half the price. You also have the try the bruchetta for the as an appetizer, very tasty!!
Happy dining,
