Learn to Appreciate your Customers, not Scowl at your Customers

Took mom here last week. The greeter was a nasty piece of work. I don't mind rude but out of your way rude is not necessary expecially when the food sucks. This place used to pack people in but we were here in a Friday and both dining areas were near empty and something did not feel right. The food took too long to arrive at the tables. The servings were small, the prices high, and the sauces too sweet. We used to like this people but sadly were reminded this evening of why we do not prefer this location. In an nut shell...it is important that customers don't need your restaurant, you need your customers. Smile, serve food quick, serve food that tastes good and serve food that is reasonbly priced. Otherwise you will have no one left, not even the odd sucker.

Chinese Food North American Style

Approximately 200 seats in two large and clean rooms, which probably look as they did a decade or two ago. Service is quick but a bit impersonal. Dishes not overwhelmed by sauces which were bland but not overly sweet. Prawns with broccoli and black bean sauce were too lightly sauced. The shellfish were well cooked but broccoli was little more than warmed through; crisp, not tender-crisp. No debit card facility.

Chinese Cuisine for North American Palates

My boyfriend and I went expecting decent Chinese food in a nice atmosphere, we got something different. We had spring rolls as the pot stickers had to be ordered 24 hrs in advance. They were bland and somewhat oily inside. The room is somewhat odd with mostly large tables in the atrium area and a mix of small and large tables inside. There was no music and since the ceilings were pretty high there was a constant buzzing sound of conversation from other tables. The only other patrons were seniors and families. For the main course we had Beef and Green Beans in Black Bean Sauce, which was okay although it had a strange aftertaste, BBQ Duck with Ginger, which was really sweet and no good, and Shrimp Fried Rice, fairly bland. I really wanted Peking Duck, but again you had to order it 24 hours in advance. All in all, a bland and unsatisfying experience for $40+ for 2 people for dinner.

Why so popular?

The Capilano Heights Chinese Restaurant is a very popular spot (especially for seniors) in North Van, a popularity I can only conclude attests to the dearth of really decent Chinese restos on the North Shore. We bring my Mum here every once in awhile as she, and all her friends love it. Lemon chicken, deep fried prawns, cashew guy ding and all the usual dishes are actually quite well prepared, if a little too much on the bland side. Service is quick and the setting is nice, with almost half the space in an atrium garden room.

Good food, comfortable, great for families, quiet

What I love about this restaurant, it holds many people, so you rarely have to wait more than a few minutes for a table, though there are lots of people the tables are large and chairs are very comfortable, and I love how quiet and peaceful it is... Great for families. Yes the servers walk around fast and don't spend much time taking your order, but this is a chinese restaurant... I have never been to a chinese restaurant where the server dotes over you. I have found they are actually very nice and way more patient than China town restaurants.

The lemon chicken is great, but the ginger beef is amazing.

The best on the north shore

The lemon chicken was the real thing that I have not found on the north shore for over 20 years. Real lemon on moist chicken. The garlic ribs were also the best that I have found on the north shore. I don't know what type of meat they are using for the beef and broccoli but it was moist and flavourful and not a cheap cut of meat like a lot of other places are using now. The chow mien was again fresh and flavourful. And some of the orders come in those as seen on t.v. and in movies boxes. The food is great but the value is not like most places. They do not deliver but it is well worth the trip for pick up.You can call ahead for a pick up but it only took 10 minutes drinking my ice water (they should offer tea) to get out the door. Well worth it when you have friends from out of town.

Don't go at peak times!

This Chinese restaurant is ideally located in a beautifully forested area of upper Capilano. It is a stone's throw from the scenic Cleveland Dam and a short drive down from Grouse Mountain.

The food is dependable and not as affordable as they seem to believe. There is a premium of 20-30% over most other Chinese restaurants, likely due to the location. There are a lot of regular clients and many of them are seniors - I myself have been dining there on and off for over 20 years!

The worst thing about the dining experience is the service quality. They are so hurried all the time that the servers are walking away as they place your order on the table!

At busy times, they want to process your table as quickly as possible and the place is very noisy with clanging dishes and lively conversations taking place. It is rarely a romantic or quiet dining experience!

The servers also often speak very quickly with a heavy accent - my Japanese ESL wife usually has a very hard time understanding them.

However, I keep coming back (infrequently, though) to this place, but it's mainly for the dependable food and locale. It's best to call ahead for take-out and picnic at the gorgeous park across the street!
