A cafe in North Vancouver on Lonsdale serving all day breakfast, roti wraps and baked deserts. The food is simple and fresh home-style cooking.
I went to the Candlestick after seeing the ad in my apartment lobby. I had a club sandwich, and my wife had an omlette. The food was only okay, not restaurant standard, and the service was friendly, but scattered. The coffee and tea are deplorable, and to be honest the food was about as professionally prepared as I could have made at home. Lets hope things improve with experience. I will try again in a few months...
I am a huge fan of the Candlestick Cafe. I have never had tastier food anywhere. Dhana, the owner/chef has an amazing ability to make simple food, such as an omlete, taste better than it would seem possible. I've tried half a dozen menu items and each is outstanding. Her roti wraps are something you must try. Dhana's energy and friendly personality add to the wonderful experience of dining at the Candlestick. The ambiance is lovely, you just want to sit there all day. There are a couple of reviews posted on the window - from the Georgia Strait and the North Shore News. Read them if you pass by, they say more elequently what I'm trying to say; that the Candlestick Cafe is one of the most unique and delicious restaurants anywhere.
What makes the Candlestick special can be said in one word--Dhana! This smart attractive young woman is a ball of fire, wisecracking and calling all the customers "sweetie". Many regulars seem to come here every day and she gets to know them by name.
The food is excellent, fresh and delicious with a Caribbean slant. Rotis filled with curry(only mildly spiced) are available, some vegetarian. She makes a great omelette, and will leave out the brocolli if you ask. Pretty much everything comes with a few pieces of fresh fruit on the side.
This is not fast food, so relax and enjoy the friendly home-style comfort and cooking. Smile laugh, talk to the staff and the other customers, the whole place seems to be a family. Even solitary diners slip into the easy friendly atmosphere.
Time to avoid--10 AM on weekdays when the place can get crowded with construction workers from the Quay across the street. Dhana calls them "the boys" and knows what they order. By 10:30 the rush is over.
If you're looking for line cooked food, eloquently laid out and brought to your table by a career waiter, don't go here.
If you're however after a ridiculously tasty omellette (HOW DOES SHE DO IT?) and a friendly at-home atmosphere I would really recommend the candlestick.
The ambience is cozy, and by "cozy" I mean small. There's doilies on the tables and puppet parrots hanging from the roof. The kitchen is completely open and you can see and smell the food being made.
The menu choices are unique and lean towards the healthier (NOT LESS TASTY!!) side. I would really recommend the pan-fried vegetables and the omelletes (avocado, peppers and cheese..)
In conclusion, to draw an analogy, if you're tired of the over-used hollywood formula for a mainstream restaurant, come try out this independent. You'll leave pleasantly refreshed.
