i went here for a bottle of wine cause i hadn't been in there before. it was too small and jammed together i thought. i sat in a small booth which barely had enough room on our table for our wine and appy. i've never been a big fan of food at browns but i can deal with it. i've had a lot worst. i had good service but i guess that can always change depending on who is actually serving you. i've had way more fun at local bar & grills

Walked by here on a Saturday afternoon for lunch and wanted to try it out. The decor was dark but comfy and warm. We kept wondering if the decor in this particular Browns was done by Jillian Harris? I really wanted to ask the people in the restaurant, but didn't want to be one of those customers, haha! Anyways, my hubby tried their pulled pork quesadilla and it was quite delicious as with the crunchy yam fries. The place has a good vibe to it and we look forward to coming back or going to the other locations and trying more.

I went to Browns for a lunch meeting to meet a friend, I had never heard of the place but my friend insisted on it. This place is great to have a beer and have a burger. The staff serving us were kind, food was great, and it was a nice little place to just sit and talk. and have a beer

Not much value for your money
By RockSteady of North Vancouver (4 Reviews)

I first went to Brown's in 2005 and had the Ahi Tuna salad for $11. At that time it came as a full plate busting with mixed lettuce and great mango dressing as well as two big chunks of raw ahi tuna, it was great. A year later I came again to discover that the same dish was now $13 dollars and shrunk in size. I was not happy so I did not come for a long time. Just recently I went back to find that the dish is not $14 dollars and the size is half of what I had on the first dish, in other words the value for your money is gone. So I won't order that again. The only other dish that is decent is the spa veggie burger, at least so far that has not changed much besides in the price. The service was slow and not very friendly except for the first visit.

I've been to this place many times, and finally decided to rave about it! Every time I've been, I've been completely satisfied. The only thing that I would change is the price but I guess they have their reasons. My favorite is the hickory burger with yam fries, although their kobe meatballs are very nice as well. The service is always very helpful, even on a busy day they go out of their way to provide excellent service. I am looking forward to my next meal there!

Stuck up Servers

Went to Browns on Saturday night and I have no qualms about the food but some of the servers need an attitude adjustment. You are servers, so put a big smile on your faces, stop scowling and don't think that because you are under 25 years old and attractive that you automatically get a tip.

Disgusted

I don't normally post reviews of businesses online, but an exceptional situation like the one I was just in justifies it. I just ate at Browns, ordering the 10 hour ribs. The ribs were good, salad was good, but on my coleslaw was a CHEWED UP PIECE OF FAT. No it was not from me, I believe the coleslaw was uneaten from a previous meal, and when the kitchen decided to reuse it they didn't notice the piece of meat that was next to it. Each rib seems to be cooked individually so they wouldnt have been slicing them up before putting them on the plate, and if they had been, why would they bother giving me a piece that was all fat? I got a free beer and when I told the server what I thought had happened she offered to take my email to give me a coupon for Browns/affiliates. I didn't bother giving it because I will never eat at Browns again.

i like the food here...much like cactus...but the servers are WAY better at cactus! not only are they hotter and WAY nicer they are also more attentive. all the time that we came here, their servers were pretty rude and it takes them FOREVER to stop talking in the back and make their way to the front to seat us. they should really consider not only stealing the menu from cactus but some of the servers...or at least hire people that dont have their lives/jobs!

Browns Washed My Steak Dinner
By byr0n of North Vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, November 13, 2007 - 9:51am

So, for my fifth anniversary, I took my wife to Browns, and when they served my steak dinner, it had peppercorn sauce on it (which was the sauce accompanying my wifes meal). I advised them of this error and they took my steak away to redo a meal for me.

4 minutes later, my food was returned. They advised me that the chef had washed my steak dinner and it *should* be fine. I advised the waitress that this was unacceptable on any level.

Thats right. They *washed* my steak. In a commercial kitchen sink. And served it to me again. The gross negligence was corrected with a 2nd dinner prepared from scratch and the meal was purchased by the restaurant, however it has left a bitter (watery) taste in my mouth.

I can tell you I will not be eating there, or recommending anyone to eat there ever again...

Restaurant or Bar?
By interactbiz of North Van (30 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, September 15, 2007 - 2:32pm

This is a restaurant trying to be a bar. Trying without much success. Molded plastic chairs are not my idea of comfort. Ok for fast and cheap food but not here. Food menu is fairly limited and the listings focus on beverages.
Entering the premise, I sensed a strong smell of deep fryer grease. Either the oil is old and overused or the ventilators don’t work well. Probably both.
It was early and not busy so service was ok.
A glass of Rosemont red blend came from a bottle past its prime. My guest had to wait for coffee to be brewed. Starters of crab dip (bland), yam fries (soft and oily) were less than ordinary. Chicken wings were OK. My Thai chicken salad was small and soaked by a very modest dressing, no doubt poured from a bottle.
I suspect this room is wrong for the business plan and won’t survive long

The food here was good. I had the Thai curry It was around $14 and also a mojito That was expensive $8 I would never get one there again. I loved my curry bowl and my bf got the Blackened fish sandwich it was good but the coleslaw they put inside made the bottom soggy. But overall I like this place and i plan on going back again. They also have a brunch menu that looks pretty good too.

Brown's has a sexy little lounge in upper Lonsdale. The new one in West Vancouver is still a bit better but this is a solid place.

Drinks: The clamato for the ceaser shaken with horseradish is brilliant.

Food: About 1/2 the menu items are great...the rest are just kinda ok. .either way its still better and offers more variety than cactus club.
Nice items: Cowboy Salad, Tandoori Quesdillas, 22 hr ribs, yam fries, squid, Blackened fish sandwich.
Items to avoid: Burgers..(boring).

Service is decent, and the atmosphere I personally think is great.

Started Good, Then Fell Into it's Own Formula

We went to this, the first, Browns when it first opened. My biggest problem with Browns is it is a Cactus Club clone. I know one of it's owners was one of the founders of Cactus Club, but shouldn't he at least try to make his new concept stand out a little.
Some of the items on their menu are clearly stolen straight from the CC archives. One thing they had initially that was excellent was their cranberry turkey sandwich-it was an amazing sandwich when they first opened. But they kept changing it. The bread became bland and chewy, they took the peppers & spinach out and put tomatoes and lettuce in, they changed the dressing.
It became very bland, flavourless, unoriginal and plain.
Their other item of note was the Teriyaki Rice bowl, exactly like they do it at CC.
Service, standard CC service, nothing special.
I'd say if you are a fan of CC you will like Browns just as much, but for anyone who like quality food with good flavour, give this a miss.

Meh

Pretty meh.

We came here for a light dinner a week ago:

My friend had the Ahi Tuna salad. It was fine, nothing spectacular, but not bad.

I had the "Dragon Bowl", which was recommended by the waitress. It was nearly unedible, with some sorth of mayo dressing on the rice.... very disgusting. I didn't eat much of it, actually any of it after picking out the chicken.

Ambience was a sports bar... service was fine, except for the terrible recommendation.

All in all: meh.

A fun place to enjoy a meal in a nice casual atmosphere. Their Hickory Burgers are great and their chicken wings are not too miss! Also the plasmas showing sports and such are nice, and the tv in the washroom mirror is kind of neat.

I remember the experience being a bit underwhelming.
The staff seemed a bit---and I can hear it reverberated through the other reviews---stand-offish. I chucked that down to our jeans and open toed shoes, perhaps not fitting into the cliche??
We ended up being left alone for most of the night and enjoyed our Key Lime Pie.

I've had better.

I found the previous reviewers way too harsh - The food when I come here has always been really good. The Ahi Tuna salad is one of the best I've ever had - and the key lime pie is incredible. Sure - it looks a lot like a Cactus Club, but so what? It's reasonably priced, good food and a nice place to have a few drinks.

Cactus Club Wannabe
By dnj060 of Vancouver (32 Reviews)

It's like stepping into a hokey attempt at being Cactus Club. If you enjoy the decor, service, menu selection and food at Cactus Club, Browns will surely disappoint.

Food quality was poor. We shared yam fries ($6) and they were dry and overcooked. Spicy but tasteless. They were like bagged frozen fries you woul buy at the supermarket.

I had a salad/rice bowl with blackened chicken ($9). The menu said it was served with black beans and salsa. There were no black beans and the salsa tasted like the cheapest store bought type. The rice was cold and mushy. The chicken piece served with the rice was tiny. The salad was ok but it was chintzy on the dates and feta. My fellow diner had the Roasted Chicken Sandwich ($10) and it was said to be bland with a lack of sauce. It was served with regular fries which, again, were dry and overcooked and cheap. It also came with a teeny salad.

They only have two desserts, Key Lime Pie and an Oreo Cookie Sandwich (both $6). So, if you like dessert, you will be sorely disappointed with the selection. We didn't try either dessert but given the quality and taste of the other food, it would have been a waste of money.

Service was all right. Probably the best part of the Browns experience.

The Lonsdale location is very small and feels cramped and does not have a good ambience.

Overall, I would not recommend Browns. For the same concept, go to Cactus Club where you know the food will be good (even if a tad more expensive).
