Aristos is a Greek restaurant in North Vancouver.
Had dinner last night. New management has done an incredible job. The food was excellent and the service was fabulous. New deco was an added bonus. Menu is similar to previous owners but had a some extra speicals. Friendly, Family, Feel and I would highly recommend a try
Great Job......
I was a bit skeptical because of the old reviews on here, but I was seriously craving chicken souvlaki and decided to try it out. Immediately I noticed the 'New Management' sign. My girlfriend and I ordered one of the dinner platters - expecting just enough food for two people and were amazed at how much we got! Not only that...but the food was freaking incredible. Lamb so tender it melts in your mouth, as well as beef and chicken marinated to perfection.
On top of that we had a super friendly waitress and the chefs even occasionally come out to great us. Finished the night off with a traditional Greek dessert (Baclava? I forget the name) and some tiramasu.
Ambience was also very good. Cozy and clean. Apparently everything has been completely renovated. Looks like they did a good job.
Also - TRY THE SANGRIA. Best I've ever had.
OMG the new owners have hit a home run and I want to go back every day. This place is truly the best I have ever tasted. The new owners are Greek and know Greek food that is for certain. Nickky introduced herself and gave me the royal treatment. She brought me 3 or 4 things to taste for free, and we ordered every one of them. We were treated like part of the family and all that was missing was the sofa for me to lay down on after as I was so stuffed and the food was so good I could not resist trying it all.
I was in here a few months ago when old owners owned it, and I can tell you it has been renovated very nicely and it is so clean and fresh in there. I can't believe how it is so much different and so much better.
Order a jug of Sangria. Oh yeah, they have home made desserts, including ttaditional Greek desserts and even Tiramisu and Creme Brûlée. I had a coffee and it was served with a nice Belgian Chocolate square. Like I said, I was treated like royalty and am so excited that Nicky took over this place, I can even walk there, it's just across from McDonalds in Lynn Valley.
The best. The best. The best.
Wife and I gave this place a shot tonight based on the reviews. I have to also agree with the majority of reviews below.
The server lady who I am sure is the person described as below indeed does seem rather cold. I asked for a subsititution of a cheaper item on a platter for two and she seemed fairly put off by it and had to go ask if they could do it or would I be OK if they charged more. So things didn't start off great. But over the night she seemed to warm up a bit, and I can't fault the service itself as it was quick and attentitive. As others say, I'm sure it's just the way she is. I actually found it kind of charming.
I didn't think too much of the ambience, but that was mostly because I was there Sunday at peak dinner time and there were no more than 3 tables in there at a time, so it was pretty dead. Nice enough though. One good thing is the parking wasn't a problem all as mentioned by others, the lot was empty.
The food was really the only reason I would ever come back here. Our platter was quite large. We ate all of it except a small bit of rice - we just couldn't finish it, we just couldn't do another bite. I can't tell you how rare it is my wife and I can't finish our meals. It's 5 hours later and I am still stuffed.
While the food was generally not spectacular, it was generally quite good. There wasn't anything served that wasn't tasty. I typically don't care for lamb and I was thinking of asking to get it substituted as well, but I am glad I didn't. This was the best lamb I have ever had, and I actually enjoyed eating it for once. It was well seasoned and so tender. It was also a huge slab, especially because my wife refuses to eat cute little baby sheep so I had it all to myself. To me the lamb would be their specialty - I read the other glowing reviews of the lamb below after so there must be something to it. I have to say I worked in a greek restaurant for a year and ate it every day so I still like the place I worked at better for food, but I am maybe just biased because I a basically grew up on it.
Value is a bit tough to measure. Yes, it's a ton of food, and pretty tasty. At the end of the night it was still about $60 after tip though so I am not sure it is a super duper value, but it is more than fair. If the service and ambience were better I would be inclined to give higher marks.
While we were there I saw more people getting take out than dining in, which is a bit strange for a restaurant. That might say something about the quality and value of the food compared to the experience of dining in. I'd also say it wouldn't be the kind of experience you want to bring a first date to.
I was in Lynn Valley went I started to get hungry, and saw Aristos opposite side of the street from the Library.
It wasn't too busy, I was greeted by the chef, who served me, and decided to order the roast lamb. Talk about a hugh portion for lunch, the lamb was delicious, it was cooked perfectly as it fell off the bone & melted in my mouth. The potatoes & rice were a nice compliment and love the taste of my entire meal. I had enough food left over to have it for lunch the next day or dinner tonight, and asked for another piece of pita bread to enjoy when I finish of my meal.
The place isn't super big, I found it to be warm inside, and would think they do alot of take out in the summer months. I will definately be back and try something else, and this place is a hidden gem in Lynn Valley.
The gang went to Aristos for a Greek feast. Aristos in Greek means 'best'. That would be overstating the caliber of this particular place.
We had Taramasalata (fish eggs and potato puree) and Kalamari (deep fried squid) as appetizers. Both were competently prepared. For mains, three of us had the $12.95 roast lamb special. It was a generous portion and had the usual sides of rice, a piece of potato and some Greek salad. One of our party had the lamb and chicken souvlaki combo. Another went for the beef and chicken souvlaki combo. The lamb/beef was good, but the chicken skewer was tasteless and a bit dry. The souvlaki came with the same sides as the roast lamb. Overall the entrees were adequate but not spectacular.
I was a little surprised at the lack of mint sauce (I asked) and the fact that the $2.50 iced tea was not bottomless. That was kind of cheap.
The ambience is nice, and they have a patio for the few surviving smokers on the North Shore. The server/owner was a bit surly though, and she could have pretended to be friendly, or at least concealed her disdain.
If you are in Lynn Valley there aren’t too many alternatives, so I guess this is what you end up with. To sum up, this is not the sort of place to go out of your way for, but not exactly a place to avoid, either.
We live in the neighbourhood and thought we'd give this place a try after not having been here for a couple of years. The waitress (probably the owner lady) was indeed cold as ice and didn't seem to care if she had customers. Other patrons were having a good time and seemed to enjoy the atmosphere, which is cozy. The food was lemonized! Everything from the caesar salad, the potatoes, and the huumos had waay too much lemon. Maybe they are trying to preserve everything longer? The wine was too expensive for this calibre of restaurant. A $10.50 bottle at LCB was priced at $34. Considering the prices, chintzy paper napkins should have been cloth. All in all, a mediocre dinner, and too expensive. There are many better restaurants in North Van.
I have been to Aristos at least 3 times and I just can't get over the unfriendly/rude service. The food has been fine with good portions for the price. The moussaka was good. They also have nice calamari. It has been my experience that my patronage wasn't appreciated or welcomed - it is very strange. If you are desperate for Greek food in Lynn Valley you can try it but you may have the same experience with the service.
I went here with some friends. The food is quite good, and comes in generous portions. It is a little pricey, but that's really my student budget speaking, the price fits for North Van. But I cannot agree more with the other review here, the owner could have hidden her 'disdain' a little better. I think she should avoid serving people herself, the service of the restaurant should be amiable, not frowning... But that's OK, as long as they are not openly rude, I can focus on my meal, which was good.
This is probably the best value for Greek food in North Vancouver. The serving sizes are generous, of high quality and decent pricing. Anyone in Lynn Valley in need of some Greek food should check this place out, or even get a to go order.
The staff could be friendlier, but I guess you can't win 'em all.
Best Greek on the northshore.
Order the lamb and watch it fall off the bones.
Even the pita tastes home made and delicious.
But don't plan on eating the day before, the portions are huge.
I wouldn't say the owner is unfriendly, it's not the breathless "himynameiscindyandillbeyourwaitressfortonighthowseverybodydoing...", but if you want that go to TGIfridays.
Their food is really fantastic. I live in North Vancouver, and all I can say is that their food is really, really good. But the thing is that, I think they re-use food. When I went there with my friend, we ordered a plate of souvlaki to share because we didn't have a lot of money. Their food was great, but their rice had some old rice bits in it... Some rice grains were too hard to chew because they were so old. And more importantly; their food is really expensive. Not to mention the owner lady's unfriendly service. She slammed the water on our table and make this icy face when we said we are only ordering one plate of souvlaki. Or maybe she didn't trust us because we were just teenagers? I do love their food, but they are a bit too expensive...
This is my second visit here and I still love this place and will return. The food is excellent with huge portions that you will be bringing a doggie bag home (and I went there hungry but still left with a doggy bag). That's great.
We arrived shortly after 5pm so the restaurant was not busy as expected. We were seated immediately and given menus and were asked what we wanted in very great timing. So the service timing is excellent, but....well, some here have been complaining about the 'rude' service but I have to wonder....was it really rude or just "unhappy" looking? The person taking our order was an elderly woman that didn't seem to know how to smile but we knew that she wasn't upset, it wasn't us personally and was not rude to so we actually found it a bit amusing (joking about how a smile might crack her face? LOL). We watched her throughout our dining experience and she wasn't rude but she clearly just looked unhappy. Unhappy and not smiling to me does not mean rude so I do not give negative marks to this place for an unhappy looking hostess/server.
We ate, we paid, we were extremely full and very happy with our meals and we finally got a smile as we left. Was it because we were leaving? I hate to think that.
I had the roast lamb....absolutely incredible. My first thought - it's so huge, how will I eat it all? (no worries, that's what doggie bags are for). The baked lemon potatoe - that was a hit at the table - awesome. The rice was light and fluffy and I loved that I was able to say, hold the green peppers and they did. If you ever crave lamb, this is THE place to do. Very reasonably priced, huge portions and a clean restaurant. The other items on the menu looks fabulous but when I think greek I always want lamb. This mis my 'lamb' spot. The parking is hard (always busy from the other businesses, so part at the mall and walk over).
Aristos is arguably the best Greek Food I've ever had. The prices are fair for the amount and the quality of food is just outstanding. I have never been short of very impressed with the speed it arrives, the texture (light rice, fluffy pitas, perfectly cooked meat), or the taste of everything which, especially with the tsatziki and lemon potatoes, nears gourmet. In my opinion, the food is truly deserving of a five.
As many others have said, the portions are enormous and if you are the type of person to take a doggy-bag, I guarantee one you will have enough left over to do so here.
I have been here many times with many different groups of people and I have never found their servers, especially the older woman who I am 90% sure owns the place with her husband, to be rude. Unfriendly, maybe, but that seems to be more of a personality characteristic than irritation at having customers. Still, if you can't handle anything but over-the-top smiles, this might be a deal breaker for you.
The ambiance of the place is very nice as well. Low lit with candles on the tables and beautiful pictures all around.
The only real complaint I have is that the small parking lot that Aristos shares with the three or four other stores is often cluttered and hard to park in. I suggest parking across the street; there is an opening to a parking lot about 10 feet beyond the one which serves Aristos, on the left.
Over all, one of the most consistently satisfying restaurant experiences I have had.
This is an amazing restaurant! They have the best roast lamb dinner I have EVER had. The greek salad on the side is always fresh, the lemon potato is always perfectly cooked and slightly tangy, the pita bread is to die for and just thinking about the rice makes my mouth water.
I have never ordered anything other then the lamb, but friends that are more adventurous then myself say their other plates are just as good.
The building itself is clean if slightly cramped. The washrooms are always clean (something I judge quite harshly) and well stocked.
The one spot where they are lacking would be the service, although it has improved greatly in the last few years. The owner can be a little short at times, she is a lady of few words. She doesn't intend to be rude, even if it seems as such. The staff is always clean, even if they are sometimes lacking a smile.
The alcohol menu is long and the prices are decent.
I've heard from my friends that the deserts are wonderful. I wouldn't know, I've always been too full after eating my lamb to even think of a desert. The portions are quite generous.
The prices overall are good. It is now $15.95 for the lamb. Up from $9.95 three years ago.
A good place for a casual date, or a family dinner. If you are planning to go on a Friday night, make sure to reserve a table!
This is my favourite N. Van Greek restaurant. I've visted all the others and although the ambience at some might be better, the food and value for your dollar don't compare. We always take out of town visitors to eat here and they always happy with the experience.
We live in the Lynn Valley area - having moved from West Van last year. We eat out quite a bit so it was nice to find a decent restaurant in the area. The food is good - we've had quite a few things on the menu, although usually end up with Homous, Calamari, and a mixed souvlaki or the roast lamb.
After reading the previous review I just had to add one for this restaurant - we love Aristos! (as a matter of fact I stumbled across this site looking for their phone number for takeout).
My husband and I live in Lynn Valley, which does not have a great selection of restaurants, so we leave the area quite often. But when we are in the mood for Greek food we feel lucky that we are within strolling distance of Aristos, which always has great food. If the weather is nice we bring our dog and tie him up just outside the patio and eat there, instead of driving.
We almost always have one of the souvlakis, humous and pita, and usually spanikopita, but we've tried probably a third of their menu. We've been there for birthdays, anniversaries, or when we just want Greek food. I have been to at least 3 restaurants on Lonsdale that had good food, two of which were on the pricey side, and another in West Van on Marine Drive which did NOT have good food, and Aristos has them all beat.
We have always been happy with the food, the service and the price and are glad that this restaurant is in our area.
