Had a good time
By unclerob of New West (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, May 5, 2010 - 6:34am

1st time here a few weeks back, but will return. Kids had a good time and between Appy's and Entries, we were all stuffed and ended up with some take out for midnight snacks later in the evening. Decor is great and we got a table by the window. Between the four of us, we ended up trying a lot of the menu and it was all good. I was concerned about other reviews talking about the service, but we were not in a hurry to get in and get out, and at no point did our glasses go empty. The pace of the meal was quite relaxing.
Dinner for 4, with too much food, cocktails and desert was $200

I have attended a couple of student performance by a local belly dance group.
this event has been held once a year and is well attended.
The only beef, pardon the pun is that a discount on meals would be appriciated seing as this group brings in many patrons who otherwise would not be there especially on a week day.the food is typical greek cuisine, but not overwelming.

Wonderful Ladies Night Out!
By touche of Vancouver (downtown) (1 Review)

Several of my girlfriends and I stopped by Stefanos on our way to a comedy show - and I have to say - it was wonderful!

We shared two dinner platters so we had a taste of everything! The size of the platters was astounding - and we ended up taking quite a lot home (great for lunch the next day). I really want to commend our server. While the restaurant was jam-packed with large parties and people dancing to the house band, our server still went so far out of her way to accomodate our allergies - and our preferences - with a smile!

We each tried some of the feature martinis - Asian pear is my fave - and to top it off, our server noticed that it was my friends birthday and brought us a birthday dessert!

All around great night - and a perfect place to drop by before a show!

barking staff

OK, I was there with a few people a few days ago and we had just ordered ours meals. I and another ordered an appy since eating lunch late beforehand but had intentions of ordering something more (either a drink or another appy to share) but we had seriously rude and bossy service by staff; they barked at us about ordering 'JUST an appy.' Hot tip for ya: just settle down and see what happens!! It took 1.5 hours to get our food!! (perhaps a sick kind of punishment) etc. This restaurant seems to have a good reputation (how, I have no idea) but since this experience perhaps they need some kind of reality check...BUSINESSES SURVIVE on customers - otherwise what is the flipping point??? You will never have a friend of mine or anyone I talk to on a regular basis at your restaurant!!*... others from what I can see are spreading the word as well! I wish Stefano's luck in the future and hope that they get their head out of the sand!

Great Everytime!

I have been a loyal Stefanos customer for over 10 years and highly recommended this establishment to everyone I know. One of the people I work with wanted to try Stefanos out and looked up the restaurant and told me about some poor reviews. I was shocked when I saw what some people have said. I as a regular, pleased customer have never in my 10 years have had anything less than an excellent experience at Stefanos. The portions are huge, the service has always been friendly and personable and the Band has always been a great addition to the evenings. Everyone I recommend to this place loves it!
Unfortunately for Stefanos the ones that have a great experiences are not the ones that write and comment on it. WE JUST CONTINUE TO COME BACK!!!
Come on people......They are packed busy for a reason!!!

I Have Never Been More Put-Off on A Saturday Night
By youarewhatyoueat of burnaby and vancouver (1 Review)

My friend took me out to this place in order to introduce me to the basics of salsa. I had heard of it in the past as a place for people to go to at the end of the week in order to enjoy light dancing and entertainment.
I was sorely disappointed. It was busy (to be expected of a saturday night) but the staff did nothing to redeem the place. The atmosphere was thick with the tension of overworked staff. It felt harried and careless.
I ordered an appetizer for $11. It consisted of 10 little prawns. Actually, I received more sauce than food stuff so that I was paying a dollar per prawn, each being smaller than my fingernail. Plus, it took an hour for the food to get to the table. The food was mediocre.
Before the food arrived, the manager came by to bark at our table because we didn't order what he called the "expected minimum of $20 per person" on saturday night. He told us this after we ordered.
My check came with the following listed: $11 for prawns and a $9 EMPTY FOOD fee. I was paying almost $10 for NOTHING.
The manager was not sympathetic. He ushered us to the back, treating us like kids, and had us pay while holding our debit cards in his hand (what did he think? We were going to make a run for it?). The check already had a tip amount added to the total (this is laughable...it was more than 15%) but the debit machine still prompted us for a tip ON TOP OF THAT.
If I wasn't concerned about having the rest of the table be saddled with the responsibility of paying for our food, my friend and I would have left.

I have never felt more insulted during a meal.

"Thats your Opinion"

I went to dinner tonight with a friend at Stefanos. Its Valentines day so we figured we'd have to wait a little bit longer. We however did not receive our food until an hour after we ordered. I ordered an appetizer and my friend did not. I asked the waitress to bring out the appetizer with the rest of the food. She brought it out earlier with our pita from the meal. She did not bring out the sauce for it though. The pita bread was cold. When we finally got our entrees the rice was very bland and buttery tasting.

I was finished and pushed my plate to the side. The Waitress did not come back and ask us how our food was. We were both finished for 20 minutes before she came back and asked us if we needed anything else. Meanwhile the busser just walked up and grabbed our plates from us. I had some leftovers and had to ask her to wrap them up. She had just grabbed our plates without saying a word and was just going to throw out my half a plate of leftovers without even asking!

Finally we waited another 10 minutes to pay. We decided to walk up to the bar and just pay there. I Asked to speak to the Manager and told him about how horrible our experience was and that we would not be back.

His response was " thats your opinion". I can't believe it! Why would you ever say that to a customer. If thats the manager/owners attitude its no wonder the service was so terrible.

Not with service like that. Essentially I paid $30 to eat cold and bland food and be treated like garbage.I used to go there once a month and even got my parents hooked on it. I will never go there again.

Big party rip-off
By Big-tipper of Langley, B. C. Canada (2 Reviews)

I have started using this site as a resource before trying new places but the appalling experience this weekend has triggered me to create an account just to share the experience with others.
Stephanos was the destination for the Company Christmas Party this year. 30+ guests booked in. They placed us around 2 separate tables right next to the dance floor. So talking at the table was impossible and even getting the attention of associates at the next table was inconceivable. Due to the current economic situation each of us was asked to pay half of the cost of the meal which included 2 "drink" tickets. $25 each.
The fixed menu offers a few choices but nobody bothered asking what our choice of appetizer might be. After being seated for about 30 minutes and while attempting to get the attention of ONE of the servers a plate was just dropped on the table between us. We had to ask the server 3 times to move it or take it away with her uncaringly responding that there was "more coming" and "Don't worry about it" before we were able to communicate that it was triggering an anaphalactic reaction in the wife due to the seafood. We are unable to touch it, or the plate it was served on ! The server just stood there looking shocked. Finally the person next to us noticed and quickly moved it away. This sort of incompetence and indifference is truly alarming. Luckily the wife was able to recover after a while.
They took orders for the main course. I decided to keep it simple and selected a "mixed" souvlaki of beef & chicken while the wife picked the lamb dinner. Between the wife, the person next to her and the one next to me there were a few minor alterations ordered for the greek salads. (One no cheese, one no bell peppers, one easy on the onion.) After 30 minutes they started serving. Between the four of us only I got some feta cheese, all had almost no onion, and only the person who asked for no peppers had the one piece of a pepper.
The main course arrived slopped entirely together on one plate. The greek salad dressing flows into the mushy overcooked potato and under the rice. The combined taste of lemon and vinegar was gut wrenching. The gooey overcooked vegetables at the far end were saved from the tanginess of the dressing but that left them completely flavourless and disgusting. The lone skewer of meat with three pieces of dry cardboard chicken and three pieces of >SURPRISE< beautifully cooked beef was far short of expectations. Both the wife's and her neighbour's lamb meals were large chunks of fat and the meat was greasy. Their rice/potato/salad was from the same vat as mine and was equally disappointing.
There was no choice in the desert, which was haphazardly dropped in front of us more than two hours after the start of the dinner. Again the servers were confused when we tried to explain that due to food intolerances (allergies) we were unwilling to eat them. Every time another server brought one they would put it in front of us and we would have to pass it down ourselves. (One guy ended up with 4 in front of him.)
About this time the wife had a sore throat from all the yelling to the person beside her and as she had finished her second glass of wine (I was charged a drink "ticket" for my iced tea with dinner even though I told them I was a designated driver and would drink no alcohol.) we called it a night. I wanted to pick up something to eat on the way home.
As the online info states the meals are $15-$30 I find that $25 for the meal I ordered would be overpriced even IF IT HAD BEEN FANTASTIC nevermind that I ate it all, despite the shortcomings, and left hungry. The company was charged $50.(Usually $15 or less out Langley way.) What a SCAM.
There are many other Greek restaurants out there that serve better sized portions with SERIOUSLY BETTER QUALITY for a better price ! Do yourself a favour and visit one of them.
STAY AWAY from Stephanos !

But recommend them to people you don't really like.

Nice, nice building, decor, wood, beams. Just a comfortable, lovely ambience. Even the food, not bad. Good size portions, flavour excellent. However, a couple of things are very tacky. The filet of sole, - deep fried. Not a good idea. Great looking plate, greek salad, wonderful potatoe, rice, and on top of it all, - deep fried breaded sole.

Next, it was Saturday night, and the band took a 45 min break to eat dinner, (along with about three other breaks). If you play from 8:30 pm to 12 midnight, - do you think, just maybe, - you could eat before your gig?

To make things worse, when the band was not playing there was silence, no music. Where I live CD music is cheap. I don't know who's at the wheel at Stafanos but you you could see a room full of people puzzled, the party was dying, no music. People started leaving, while the band was chowing down over dinner in the back.

I give up. So close, - but not quite. I didn't enjoy the evening it was tedious. Oh, service, good server just not around very much. So much for that.

I wouldn't count them out yet but I won't be back for six months.

Had the combo seafood and found the halibut overcooked and dry, there were only 2 prawns & 2 scallops with the combo. I would have expected more. The potatoe was too mushy, the rice was fine. The veggies of carrots & beans were very over done. It had excellent flavor but way overdone. The meal was quite cool.
The service was not very attentive. We had to ask for our coffee, ask for our dessert menu. I asked if there was agelomono soup, she never did let me know.
The prices are reasonable and the setting is very relaxing. Loved the view.
I would think twice about going here again.

poor policies - NOT good 4 biz

I used 2 work close -by and went to this place often. it "used-2-B" quite good and a nice dining experience. Then the owner must of recognized that their biz was good enuff and started to scale-back. BIG mistake

They imposed mandatory fixed menus and built-in gratuities whenever there was holidays (X-mas, mother's day, etc) and this is BS!

They ran a good business into the ground - SHAME ON THEM! I would go across the street to Taverna Greka or pass the all-together and go to My Favorite Greek Taverna @ Brunette & Lougheed

We had reservations for a party of 34 people.....Only 30 people showed up (due to colds and flu).....When the final bill came the restaurant charged for the 4 people that did not show up....I was appalled that a restaurant would do this....I have had many company functions and have spent thousands of dollars in an evening and have never heard anything so ridiculous as this.
I will never recommend this restaurant and will pass the word around......
Word of mouth is the best or worst advertising for a busness.....and they just lost all of ours....

Alway the Best Greek

I needed my lamb fix and three of us went mid week, It was not that busy as it was mid week. Two of us had the Roast Lamb which was the best. One had salmon. wild, not farmed. None of us had appetizers as the portions are always larger that I can eat. I think I enjoy the ambiance as much as the food. We sat and enjoyed the view as darkeness approched. Alway the a great experience, and best of all good dollar value.

I have been going to Stefanos for years. They are great for Mothers day, Valentines day, and they do well to accommodate parties.
The service has always been pleasant, and I would rate it above par for the lower mainland, and I have never been server food that I didn't thoughly enjoy. The ambiance is great, except for a couple of times when I have been there, and the band didn't match the surroundings very well.
They do have a good wine selection, and decent bar service, and the owner manager usually comes by for a cameo during your meal, and is willing to take criticism, or receive cudos.
I would always recommend Stefanos to anyone visiting new west, for a very nice meal, drinks, and ambiance, especially to celebrate a special day for someone.

Nothing Outstanding - Ordinary Greek
By Hargow of Richmond (46 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, January 25, 2008 - 11:30am

Went to Stefano's last nite with friend, GF and son for Greek Dinner. Food a plenty and service was good. Best item is the Ambiance of the dining facility on Columbia. One of the nicest venues I've been to. Love the building.
As far as food, it was very plain and flavourless. My friend and I had roast lamb, not even on the bone and lacked "greek" flavouring. The rice, potatos, salad and pita were standard. My GF and son both enjoyed lamb souvlakia's. I tasted their lamb, and it had better flavour than mine. Might of been because of the grill effect.
Again it wasn't stunning, but management trys hard and they don't make it an upleasant evening. The only thing I might comment on is the the chefs work on giving their food a flavour pizazz. Prices and amount of food very fair and reasonable. Suitable for large parties.

Not your usual Greek

I attended my SO's Christmas function here last week (2nd visit) and although it was not bad, I was a little confused.

Besides the name and the food, I would not have guessed this was a greek restaurant. Bar/Pub on the lower level and the upper level was the dining area. Yes, they have large plants all over the place (a norm for greek restaurant apparently), but all other decorations was a mish-mash of everything else. The house band played a lot of 80's music and during breaks, a lot of salsa music. Actually when I think about it, I felt more like I was at a country-bar instead of a greek restaurant.
The food was good, I especially liked their calamari. But the dessert was a little weird. We were served something that looked like tiramisu, but tasted strongly of coconut.
Service was fast and efficient. Difficult for a night as busy as that.

Great Greek in New West

Not many people think of New West as a Greek food destination. However, we had a great night out. We'd been to the other place across the street and had a bad experience with semi-frozen dolmades, so we thought we'd try this place instead. Everything was wonderful; the food, the service, the atmosphere. Would definately recommend.

Mandatory tips imposed!
By lesmark of burnaby (69 Reviews)
Submitted Saturday, January 6, 2007 - 3:35pm

The food is pretty standard here as it is a Greek restaurant. I ordered the chicken souvlaki and it was pretty consistent with other Greek restaurants in the Lower Mainland.

However, the one issue I had was with our group. When our bills came (split bills) they charged us a 15% gratuity on top of our food/taxes! I've heard this happen at other restaurants and think this is more ridiculous than having to line up for paid food!

We were informed that this is a standard practice at this restaurant and as a result I would not recomment this restaurant.
I've been informed that if they know your group they will not charge the mandatory 15% gratuity/tips. Even though, where is the consistency in the practices? Isn't a customer a customer and a group of customers - a group of customers?

Would definitely not recommend.
