New thai place with ayce from menu on weekends

Note that they charge $2 for tea, without informing you of this charge. They offer a buffet on the weekends, and dishes are brought to your table. The menu was limited and most of the dishers were too greasy. Thai food is known to be flavourful but some of the dishes just lacked flavour and were salty to boot. I recommend the chicken wings, and spicy green curry. The calamari was alright and the ginger stirfry were also alright. Avoid the large eggrolls, greasy noodles, greasy basil stir-fry. The coconut tapioca pudding was terrible. Pity they didn't add a few fresh mango chunks to it. The salad is quite sad as well with no papaya shreds in site. The chicken seemed like it was better quality than the beef. There was a lack of seafood even some mussels would be nice. It's also odd that they don't offer a tofu option... tofu is cheap. On the positive side all of the food was freshly cooked, and the pacing of the dishes was great ensuring that the dishes were warm. The restaurant is also newly renovated and is nice inside. The booths are spacious and offer privacy.

Must visit for Thai in New Westminster

I could not eat my order of "Yellow Curry" fast enough. Mm, mm, good!
I have had this type of dish in other Thai restaurants as it is a favourite for me, but I don't recall it being prepared with such generous and delicious pieces of chicken and so little potato (compared to generous potato and little chicken). I found the sauce super delicious and very appetite stimulating too.

I noticed that even when they were busying themselves with non-direct-customer-attending-tasks, the servers always kept an eye on me & my husband and hurried right over at the slightest possibility that we needed them. I found their conduct suggestive of a more higher end (and higher priced) restaurant.

I thought my order at $9.50 was typically priced and affordable. I am really surprised that only about 3 tables were occupied and possibly 3 times that many were empty. We visited on a Friday night too.

The restaurant interior is a little too dark for my liking, but what an elegant & stunning transformation from the "Royal City Cafe", which occupied the location for decades previously. I had the same impression when I first walked into "Tamarind Hill" (Uptown New West). "Tamarind Hill" replaced a cafe.

Excellent Value, Excellent Food

I heard about this place being newly renovated, so my partner and I decided to give it a try. We came in for an early dinner, around 5 on Saturday, and were promptly seated.

The menu was large, with a wide variety of different types of Thai food - based on the (numerous) other Thai restaurants I've been to, I'd say they have a decent selection, with most of the "traditional" bases covered with innovative or uncommon options (Squid w. egg noodles, anyone?). Prices for individual dishes were very good, and the combos were an especially good deal (basically 2 entrees, 2 appetizers, etc for 15$ per person).

Drink selection was broad; a good selection of beers, and wines, and a large number of non-alcohoic options. No cocktails, though, despite there being a bar in the restaurant. Prices were much better than many restaurants, esp. in downtown New West.

Ambience was very good; clean, "modern Thai" decor with dark wood, muted lighting, and golden Thai accents on the walls. Similar to the more upscale "Urban Thai" restaurants in Yaletown or Vancouver. HUGE room (probably seats 80 people, full) but made more intimate with a large number of spacious booths and nicely placed screens.

We ordered the chicken satay, black bean stir fry with prawns, and a beef red curry. Satay was nicely done, and the peanut sauce was EXCELLENT; definitely a winner there. I enjoyed the stir fry, which was generous with the prawns, and had a nice assortment of very fresh vegetables. Curry was also well done, with a good level of spicyness, and fresh veggies / meat. Jasmine rice was tender and seperately nice; very good! Overall, food was excellent. Service was attentive and pleasant, but not intrusive; zero complaints, there.

Overall, and excellent experience and definitely somewhere to return to. Very classy, excellent food, and the price was EXTREMELY affordable; I believe the entire meal, including alcohol and tips for 2, was only 45$.

This place is brand-spankin' new (it even has the Royal City Cafe letters on the outside) but you wouldn't know it from their food.

I went in there this past weekend with a friend and was promptly seated by the friendly waitress. We ordered our food (Pad Thai and some coconut prawn curry) and didn't have to wait long before we had it in front of us.

The food was some of the best Thai I've tasted, and the price was great compared to most places. The restaurant looks totally different on the inside, and the redesign has brought a great modern look to the strip in downtown New West.

I definitely recommend this place, and I noticed that they have a lunch special of all-you-can-eat for $12.95 on weekdays. I'll be back to check that out soon enough.

Royal City Thai is such a welcome addition to downtown New West. Try the Pad Thai - even if it's made with their "special sauce" (when I called to order take-out, I asked the lady who answered the phone if the Pad Thai was made with tamarind sauce, which I think tastes much better than Pad Thai made with ketchup or tomato sauce, and she answered that it's made with their "special sauce" - it was great, nonetheless). It didn't taste overly ketchup-y, as some others made in other Thai restaurants around here can. Their chicken stirfried with cashews is mouth-watering, as well. Just enough spice to get your taste buds hopping, but not so much that you're guzzling glass after glass of water. Service is great, as my food arrived hot and just as I'd ordered it, within about 1/2 hour, which was actually earlier than the lady who worked there said it would take. I will definitely order takeout from Royal Thai again.

C'mon Give them a break!
For a new open Thai restaurant especially in New Westminster, I am so gald they finally open. We need to encourage more nice restaurants to improve New Westminster.

As my friend and I walked into the restaurant in the afternoon after the Olympic Flame, first thing I noticed was their nicely decored layout, clean floor, comfy seats, and smile on the face. Waitress was very sweet and friendly, we ordered a pad thai, tom yum goong, red curry, and wine, waitress got everything right and we didn't need to wait for too long. We thought the food was delicious and wine taste just about right to go with the red curry. We love it!!! We chat with the waitress and found out they just open couple days ago, we thought that was suprising good for a newly open restaurant besides downtown Vancouver. Food's great, drink's excellent, ambiance's romantic, we definitely will go back.

Oh, and one more thing, if you want to take your girl out to a nice restaurant and won't hurt your wallet, THIS IS IT!

What a great place

Decided to give this place a try in March and have been back several times. Their panang curry is one of the best I've tried. Their service is friendly and kind, a little slow to bring the bill.
Lunch specials are an insane value at $6.95 and you get a huge amount of very delicious food!
They are generous with flavour and spice. Nothing bland about this food and they don't dumb down the heat as much as other restaurants.
Highly recommended.

Went to the New West Quay-side public market today, but found it is still closed. Bit of disaster, since the kids were counting on getting some much needed refreshments. The kind one needs to get through a cold Dec. afternoon.

So, we decided to walk down Columbia street and take our chances.

The first surprise was downtown New Westminster. An interesting mix of antique stores, high-end fashion boutiques, and seedy dives advertising nubile dancers. But no real food options, besides the ubiquitous Starbucks and Waves coffee factories.

Then we came across Royal City Thai. Place looked big and quiet from the outside. Too quiet? Should we risk it? What if it is a complete disaster? So many questions...

Anyway, moving the story along, we decided to take our chances. And, boy, are we ever glad we did.

Big spacious seating, where you can't hear the other patrons conversing. Friendly, attentive service that never gets overbearing. And outstanding, authentic food at prices that makes one wonder why one is paying an arm and a leg at Banana Leaf or Tropika.

The red curry was just the right mix of coconutty sweetness and sambal spiciness. The satays and spring rolls were moist and crispy, respectively. And the Pad Bai Grapao Goong - tiger prawns with mushrooms, bell pepper, Thai chili and basil - were to die for.

We'll be back to sample the other 57 things on the menu ;-)

Got Nothing I Asked For...

Went in early for take out and to have a beer as i waited. The server (sweet as she was) had to come back 4 times to confirm my order - pad thai and chicken panang. She even pointed at the menu items multiple times and confirmed their corresponding numbers (lanuage barrier issues). Easy, right? Wrong!! Upon arriving home I discovered a fried rice dish and BEEF panang. I don't eat beef :( The renovation looks quite nice but unless I actually get what i paid for I won't be returning.....
