Pho Chung Nam is a friendly little place that serves both Chinese and Vietnamese cuisine. Prices are reasonable, with combo plates for 1 person under $10.
Came here the other night after a quick browse through the Royal City Centre. The restaurant is right across the street and at first glance looked interesting. They close at 9pm, my dining partner and I arrived around 8:40pm. At some places staff watch the clock on the wall and if you arrive twenty minutes before official closing time they generally aren't thrilled. No strange looks or attitude here just a warm welcome and menu's immediately.
First thing I noticed, the prices. If you are dining on a budget you can't go wrong here. Full meals for 6.95,
7.25, etc. Actually not sure how they can sell their meals at such prices but I am not going to complain.
I ordered the wonton soup and Vietnamese sub for 6.95. My dining partner had the House Special that consisted of Vermicelli with two spring rolls, two grilled skewers of beef, one grilled minced pork chop and one shrimp salad roll. All of that for a mere 10.50, unbelievable.
The food was outstanding. Fresh tasting, hot and deeelish. My wonton soup was excellent, a nice big bowl with at least six or seven great tasting wontons. I sampled a little of my dining partners platter and it was equally as good, I could eat a plate of those grilled minced pork chops. Our meals came with a very nice jasmine tea at no extra charge.
The restaurant is very clean and tidy looking.
I have no complaints about this place and will be back as soon as possible.
The food is alright. Nothing to write home about but at a very decent cost. && I must say their Bánh mì or Vietnamese sub is outrages, && affordable! Especially tastey is their lemon grass chicken.
Ambience, well it's there.Bland but atleast clean.
Service is funny, sometimes it's superb and other times it's d.o.a.
would maybe recommend to fam and friends.
oh, && they almost never have all the bubble tea flavours listed in their menu.
We order take out from here quite a bit. They are great on the phone and always have our order ready in about 10-15 minutes. If I order take out while I am in the restaurant the server always offers me free tea.
They tend to not put chopsticks in with the take out, so if that's imporant to you remeber to ask.
We always get the Vermicelli noodles, and we haven't had a bad meal yet.
A great cheap find for good Vermicelli in New West. I can't comment on dining in, but the ambience is a bit lacking, so we just get take-out.
First, let me say, I really like Chinese food, msg and oil included and will eat leftovers happily for lunch, dinner and beyond including the steamed rice, and this review is about the Chinese food only.
We decided to give the delivery at this place a try and were very disappointed. The servings were large but the food was not up to par at all.
1) There were no sauteed green beens so we ordered chicken with green beans and black bean sauce. I put it into a different dish because it was sitting in so much oil. Even then it was still very, very oily and didn't really have much flavour and the chicken texture was... kind of mushy.
2) The prawns with szechuan sauce was a green pepper lover's delight, but the prawns themselves were pretty sparse. We didn't count them and, for the price, I think we had reasonable expectations, so maybe we should have played a game hunting for the prawns through the green pepper forest to maximize our investment...
3) The orange peel beef was supposed to be spicy but was, while generous, very saucy with kind of a tomato-y tasting sauce, not spicy at all.
4) By the time the delivery arrived the crispy noodle chow mein was no longer crispy, although the flavour was actually fine, a bit sweeter than expected, but not bad.
So on the Chinese side of things we won't be ordering from there again, and how strongly do I feel about that? Well, let's just say that the leftovers went into the trash. That being said, I might give their salad rolls a try, I do like salad rolls and maybe they will be okay...
It was lunchtime, and I was quickly invited into a half-empty dining area. I was given water, a menu, and then ignored. I tried to catch the eyes of staff who were milling about and even called out to one walking by. It seemed there was bad communication between staff.
Finally, after quite a while, one went to clean the table next to mine and suddenly realized I was there with a closed menu before me. I had already seen one table, that came after me, have their order taken a few minutes earlier.
The Beef noodle soup was bland but you get lots of sauces to throw in. The sprouts etc. that come with the soup were less ample that I've seen in other Pho restaurants, but fresh. I liked the fried roll but the sauce was boring.
I'd never go out of my way to come here but might try it again someday.
So went here with a couple of friends for a late Sunday night dinner. I had decided that I wanted to try the Pho as I have been looking for a decent Pho restaurant in New Westminster that is close to my neighbourhood. I found that the service was good but nothing spectacular. We placed our orders, including sharing the Vietnamese Spring Rolls. One friend had the Vietnamese Special combo meal, one friend had the Chicken & Broccoli on steamed rice and I had the Beef Ball & Steak Pho. All of the food was very good and came out very quickly. I really enjoyed the Pho and it came with a plate with lots of fresh bean sprouts, fresh lime and basil. The combo meal appeared to be really good as well with lots of of variety. We had lots of good hot tea and the pot was refilled at our request without any problems. But towards the end, the service declined as the workers all started to have their own dinner. Other than this, the food was tasty and really good value. I will definitely be back to try some of their other Vietnamese dishes.
I'm a big guy that likes good food, and the food at this place was great. I stopped in for a meal with a friend and really enjoyed it. They didn't skimp on portions and everything was very flavorful (I especially liked their wonton soup and kung pao beef, definitely in the top few places I've had chinese food in the lowermainland. Service was quick and friendly. The establishment itself was clean and nice. I gave it a 5 for value because of how good the food was, portion size, and price. I felt it was exceptional value to get such a good meal (and lots of it) for very reasonable prices. It is now on my list of great "cheap eats".
Stopped in here with a couple of friends for dinner. There were a few other diners, but it was less than half full - I think the reviewer who said this place is a hidden gem is right. So no delay in seating, we were brought tea right away and had our order taken promptly. We had some spring rolls for appetizers, then a few other dishes we all shared, some chow mein, shrimp fried rice, prawns, and dry garlic ribs. We all agreed it was great. Very tasty food here which ended up costing us around $10 per person. I've paid a lot higher prices for chinese food which wasn't even close to as good as this was. Another table ordered some vietnamese dishes, not sure what, but it smelled great, so I plan to try something from the vietnamese choices next time.
With really good food at low prices, we'd have expected it to be busier, so maybe people don't think it will be as good as it is when you look at the place - it is kind of plain looking, not bad, just plain is all. I'll take a place that serves delicious food, reasonably priced, over a place where i'm paying more for a fancier tablecloth anyday.
This place used to be the wonton house on 6th in New West, but awhile back it changed owners and became Pho Chung Nam (Chinese and Vietnamese food). My wife and I went to give it a try and both really loved it. The people who run the restaurant are very friendly, the prices were great, and the food was fantastic. I got a pork fried rice with lemon chicken combo and its about the best I've had anywhere, was a nice large portion as well, and coast under $7.00. Hands down the best fried rice around. My wife had Vietnamese food, a lemon grass pork with rice dish and enjoyed that very much. the ambiance is just average, it is just a little restaurant, no real bells or whistles, just a clean and friendly atmosphere.
This is one of those places that just looks pretty average from the outside, but is well worth trying as it really has awesome food for great prices. Everyone I know that has tried the place now has loved it and have gone more than once.
For a while, I thought this place was THE place to go in New Westminster, and I was a regular. I loved the food, delivery was prompt and friendly, and the value was excellent. That all changed with my last experience of this restaurant.
Called to put in an order for delivery. The person on the phone couldn't understand english well enough to take the order, so I asked her to put someone on the phone who could speak english. Put in the order, and had to repeat my address several times. Finally got it right... or so I thought, so waited for the delivery.
40 minutes later, I get a phone call saying the driver can't find my address. I repeat the address and also provide landmarks so that the driver knows where to go. Waited another 20 minutes... another phone call. Person says that the driver is on 12th street and can't find my home... btw, my place is no where near 12th street, and no where near the landmarks I gave. I repeat the address yet again, and give more landmarks. She then passes the phone over to a guy, who then asks me where do I want to go. Where do I want to go???? Hello... I put in a food order and waiting for it to show up. Unbelievable!!! Clueless or what!
About 1 hour and 20 minutes later, my food finally shows up. The delivery guy is flustered and appologetic, and says that there has recently been a large turn-over in staff. I didn't think of examining the bill before the delivery guy left, but I should have. Orders over $25 offer a free soup. Turned out that they included the soup, but they charged me for that ontop of my regular order. Food was cold, and the quality was sub-par compared to my previous experiences. Man, was I upset. I didn't have the patients to deal with them further on this, so most of the food went in the garbage. I will not order from this restaurant again.
Inexpensive but not cheap, this restuarant never ceases to impress.
My otherhalf and I frequent the establishment regularly. Run by a pleasant family, service is quick and couteous. We often order one of the many variations of pho soup or a vietnamese dinner combo plate. The price is always good, the food hot and the taste excellent.
I have no qualms about bringing friends or family here. The establishment is clean - just check out the washrooms.
If you are travelling through New Westminster or looking for a new place to dine, you need to give this place a try.
