The Orange Room serves classic European cuisine, tapas and other fare.
My boyfriend and I visited the Orange Room after having heard some positive feedback from friends. Sad to say we were very dissapointed. We started with drinks, glass of red sangria for me, beer for the bf. The sangria was probably the worst sangria I have ever had yet before I ordered it the server had said it was fantastic. If you have ever had real sangria, you know it should be full of fruit, good red wine with a little hit of brandy. What I received looked like kool-aid with one orange slice in it. It tasted awful with a hard chemical taste- must have been some type of mix. I asked for lemon and lime wedges to dampen the taste yet it was still a loss.
For dinner I had the salmon quiche and seafood fettucine for my bf. My dinner was OK- the caesar salad had mandarin orange slices in it (weird) and the quiche was oily on top as it was obviously pre-baked and then re-heated somehow (my guess is microwave). My boyfriend's dinner was down right awful. The pasta was over cooked mush, drowned in a creamy, cheesey, oil slicked sauce and the seafood (the little there was) was not properly cooked. One of the mussles had barely opened, tell tale sign that it was bad, however it was seved to him anyway!
The servers were friendly enough, yet were not overly concerned that we were not having a nice meal.
The ambiance is cold, with awkward tables and chairs that did not look clean or inviting.
Needless to say we will not be returning, which is sad, seeing we were looking forward to having a nice restaurant close to our house!
I have to say that I always go there for the mussels! The few times I've been there I cannot help myself and I always go for the daily special. Everything is organic and local, the restaurant is small and cozy, it's perfect for a get together with friends or for a romantic date. There are vegan and vegetarian dishes too. Everything is done with care and the sangria is the best I've had in Metro Vancouver. This is fine dining at an affordable price!!!!
My wife and I visited the Orange Room for lunch. We realize that food in restaurants will not be perfect everytime so we usually put up with alot. This day the food that my wife ordered was unedible. When we told the waiter he said it is usually good. I told him that I am sure it is 'usually' good but here try it....anyways short story my wife had two bites and pushed the plate away. The waiter knew that we did not like it and took it away. When the bill came we were charged for that dish. My wife said to the waiter are you not going to remove this item? He said that he was sorry but the manager said not to remove the item. I tipped the waiter as it was not his fault but am not happy with the manager (who is the daughter of the owner). If something a restaurant serves is not edible and the patron has 1 or 2 bites and is done then clearly the food was not good enough. To tell us at the end that you have to pay is not good service.......I will not go back.
While the tapas and drinks are fabuloso, always, unfortunately the breakfast food is bordering on inedible. Now I can only speak about what we ate ourselves but that includes the spelt pancakes, the eggs benny and the ordinary eggs and sausage breakfast offering. Just Don't, is all I can say. Inever been so disappointed in a restaurant. The dinners are always amazing so you definately cant go wrong there just go next door to the Pancake House for breaky instead.
We had a 35 person party atthe Orange Room and I wanted to than k Paloma and Zoe for making it work without a hitch. I appreciate all the planning and help with menu choices and flow of the meal and service. The guests were all very happy and complimentary about the food and service and most have not been to the restaurant and the question i got asked was how did you find this place the food here is better than in the city. The mussells were a huge hit, the 6 vegetarians were very pleased with their choices, and many have said they would go back to try other items on the menu. All in all a big hit with everyone.
Was looking for a restaurant that a friend and I could get together at in New Westminster after work this stormy November 5th, 2009. Was actually checking on another franchise restaurant's menu nearby to see what I could have - french fries?, when I saw on a Dine Here site below a good review and some words of that attracted me: "Wheat / GlutenFree". It is tough for us Celiacs at the best of times. I had been at this restaurant a few years ago and it was okay, and I was safe with their food and it was okay for ambiance for the type of atmosphere we were expecting - so from the review that I saw, I thought something new is going on and we should try it. I called ahead to make sure I wasn't dreaming, and sure enough the wait person on the line was very knowledgable about their food and prep etc. Well, it was great! I had their organic cherizo burger "no bun", with house salad and their muscles in saffron broth. My friend stuck her bread in my broth (felt bad), but the waitress brought out a small bowl of broth without me even asking her, for me to finish with. Nice touch! Maybe because it was blowing and storming outside, the Orange Room was cozy and relaxing; put your coat on the back of your chair. No pushing of any beverages, but the house red was lovely. I was impressed with their menu that it catered to some special groups of interest. And on checking out what others were dining on around me (casual enough to talk to the table next to you, at least this night), I hope they do well so I can dine again and try more from their menu soon.
This place is a must go to. Chef Ramsey would be very impressed.
As a Vancouverite I must say this place would kick it if it were in Vancouver.
The food: Presentation was awesome, impeccable taste. Try the chicken medallions. My wife's risotto was perfect. Humus, out of this world. Lots for vegetarians to choose from.
The service, well lets put it this way, our waitress stood on broken glass and continued to work with a bad limp, she was always checking on us.
The "Executive" Chef came out to inform another table that the Carmel for their deserts was still on the warm side, while passing our table, he took the time to stop and ask us if everything was OK. You dont see this often. The value, out of this world. And one last thing, the deserts are great, try the chocolate moose with chunks of vanilla cheesecake. you wont be disappointed.
I eat here quite a bit because it is extremely convenient and I've had a lot of different things on the menu. I hope they really re-evaluate their restaurant because it is nice to see local businesses become successful.
I don't mind paying more for good quality but there is the problem, the food just isn't good and the prices are high. Service is ok but again, I would expect better if I'm paying $20 for a sandwich, soup and pop... Their "steak pomme frittes" is awful - well the pomme frittes are actually really good but I had to order it a second time to see if maybe I just got unlucky but no. The steak is poorly cooked, poorly seasoned and a cheap cut of meat. I had their Tuna burger and it was well done which was disgusting! I could go on and on with what was bad but there are a few good things - the yam fries, the Anduille Sausage and the Croque Monsieur are all good but also difficult to mess up.
Not sure what else to say but it is hard enough for a restaurant to do well when the food is good but bad food and bad prices doesn't bode well for the future of the Orange Room. I hope they turn things around and that means starting with the food.
My b/f and I have gone to here the last two Sundays for brunch.
Everything on the menu is organic and/or free-range. All of their bread is home made, sugar, egg and dairy free, they also make gluten free bread (yah!!!).
Last week I had an omlette, so yummy, and yesterday I had the bacon and eggs, both times I couldn't finish my breakfast. Great food, great coffee, great atmosphere, and lovely owners.
This is quickly becoming my favourite place to eat in New West!
The ownership has flipped a few times over the years, and this is the first time we've been in under the new(est) owners.
I ordered a 3-egg french omelet with smoked salmon. For $10 I got a large, perfectly made french omelet (with a rosette of dill-cream cheese), a nice fruit salad, toast and orange-butter and jam, and home-fries. The value was outstanding, but the omelet should have been smaller or more smoked-salmon added. But for $10, it was more than I expected.
My wife had the smoked salmon eggs benedict. Same potatoes, a leaf-salad (I guess it was lunchier than the omelet), and amazing eggs benedict - the hollandaise sauce is home-made from scratch, and it shows. I had a bite of her eggs benedict, and it was great.
Both breakfasts came with a smoky, spicy homemade ketchup (for the potatoes) that is the best I've tasted.
The home-fries seemed a bit too perfect to have been made from scratch, and they appeared to be deep fried, but that's not a huge complaint. I still prefer Rebar's home-fries.
My wife had a latte and I had a standard coffee - both very good. I would have preferred a darker roast, but no big deal.
We'll be back for another breakfast. And for lunch, and for dinner and drinks.
Hopefully it will remain as impressive.
I really like the Orange Room's music and bands. It's also cool that it is local and not owned by some big chain. However, I'm not feeling the food. The prices are very high for very average food. The place can also be a little crowded at times. In general, I would go here for a drink or two and to listen to the music, but I wouldn't go here for dinner.
Enjoyed our dinner in this Tapas restaurant. Excellent food with reasonable price. We had couple spanish dishes and also tried the mussels. Great tasting dishes with average presentation.
The restaurant has good ambiance for couples. On Wednesday night, It has live spanish music and dancer.
Lot of selections on the drink menu.
Free meter parking (after 6 pm) in front of the restaurant.
I found the old Orange Room quite nice. This newly re-opened restaurant is also solid all around. Food is fresh and tasty and I especially enjoy their salad, although I found the brunch menu quite limited. Service is friendly and reasonably fast. I also like the ambience, but I have to note that I have only been to brunch since they re-opened, so no comment here on the dinner atmosphere.
Orange Room Tapas, great ambience and food. Servers always make us feel welcome and are very accommodating to our requests as we have some food sensitivity. Food is fresh, excellent taste and a lot of it is made from scratch!! In addition they support fair trade coffee and sustainability. The Orange room was an excellent restaurant and Orange Room Tapas is equally friendly and the quality of the service is outstanding. I have seen people of every age, having a good time and enjoying the ambience.
Prices are very reasonable and the portions are big. Very well presented.
The employees are willing to listen to suggestions and keep adding new activities and food items for the enjoyment of their customer.
An excellent place to hang out as New Westminster doesn't have much restaurants of this type. Now they are extending their hours and the Churros with Chocolate are coming!!
And must mention the photos on the wall...they add a great touch and entertain your eyes while eating. Right now the theme is Paris!
Way to go Orange Room Tapas, every time we go there we have enjoyed the excellent quality of the meals and your service!! No question about this.
We are planning to visit you as long as you are open and are looking forward for more additions to the menu.
All the best!!
My boyfriend and I had been meaning to try the Orange Room for some time, as it is one of the few in New West that does not cater to the +75 year old crowd and unfortunately, we were extremely disappointed.
Supposedly the restaurants was taken over a little while back, reopened as is now all about tapas and drinks. Too bad the menu is not at all reflected in the decor or the atmosphere. Fake plants, dated decor and awkward, ugly, seating? No thanks.
If you're going to boast about your drink menu and your tapas, make sure the restaurant feels like a chic lounge, rather than a space which lacks any sort of identity. We get that you're the "Orange Room", but really... That's not an identity.
The fellow who seated us was friendly, and his service was adequate but JUST adequate. He failed to mention that two out of the 4 the beers on tap -- which are supposedly exclusive to them and bolded on their menu--are all out. He also failed to mention that they were out of certain food items on the menu. I first question why they are out (it isn't busy so who the heck is not doing their job?) and second, why not tell us BEFORE we get our hopes up?
Finally, the food... Oh horrible food. We ordered the calamari, the beef skewers and the spicy yam fries.
Calamari - fish does not taste fresh. Sauce is a shrimp cocktail sauce (from a jar) which they seem to have added capers & pepper to... Failure.
Beef Skewers - These scared me to death. For the first few bites we couldn't figure out what was wrong... But here goes... they buy cheap cuts of beef and BOIL the hell out of them, to the point that the meet tastes mushy and "fuzzy". THEN they shove the meet on a skewer with a few pineapple chunks, put it on the grill so they get the grill marks, then plate it with honey Dijon mustard. Tasteless horrible meat. The pineapple was the best part.
Spicy yam fries - garlic mayo dip, not spicy, and similar to every other restaurant's yam fries. The least scary thing we ate.
We went on a Friday night at 6:30 and they were almost dead... That should be their busiest time. I hope this incarnation of the orange room either fails or DRASTICALLY improves.
I enjoyed many meals at the Orange Room before it closed last year and I'm happy to see it open again albeit as a fairly different restaurant than it was. I live in the area and it's good to have another dining option. . I've been for brunch and dinner and found both menus appealing and the items ordered fairly tasty and well prepared. The martini list is intriguing and the ones that we have tryed have been very good. I hope the new Orange Room keeps up the good work and maybe sneaks in a weekend breakfast menu as well.
We were there this week, although the selection size went with the restaurant size, this is a cool lil place in New Westminster. The sauces were excellent, the wine was good and a nice size! We had the chocolate Roca for dessert...OH MY! FAB-U-LOUs! This is a nice tapas and a nice change from the ordinary in New West. Recommend!
