Disappointing

I did not enjoy my one visit to this place. I usually try to do at least three visits to a restaurant before I pass judgement on it, but the food and service were poor enough that I simply did not look forward in any way to returning.

The food was a mix of very overcooked side dishes, and very undercooked main dishes. And the service was really quite, quite poor. I sat at the table for almosy 20 minutesa before anyone arrived to take my order, and the place was only about one quarter full. When they did arrive, the server was rushed, rude, and forgetful, bringing a drink I did not order, and then not returning for 15 minutes to take my food order.

I thought the ambience was OK, not great, and a bit loud, but reasonably comfortable.

This place is shut down now for the quay overhauil. I don't know if it is going to reopen.

This is a place to party, eat, dance, and to enjoy life.

I've been to Laguna Blu perhaps twenty times, sometimes as a couple, sometimes with larger groups of twelve or more. If you stop and think about what's going on there, - you'll love it.

The setting is spectacular, perched overlooking the river, lights, and tugboats. The floor to ceiling windows, the dance floor, the live music, - this is a special place. The staff are all sincere and they try very hard. This place is there to enjoy yourself. We love latin dancing, and I've had a the time of my life there, (including last night, Good Friday).

We also celebrated New Year's there. It was without question, the best New Years. The food went on all evening. From 7:30 to midnight. Five courses. Something new and different every 45 minuties. We'd dance, return to the table, there was more food! Midnight, a bottle of champagne, every table recieved one. Snow fell on the river, it was perfect.

Just go, prepare to party. Enjoy your life.

Tuesday evening

The make-over from Troll's to Laguna is great. The Salad bar is gone, the booths are gone and there is now a dance floor in the back. Rich cloth coverings. Rarely do we order Caesar salad because Jane does such a great job of it at home, but hey, we ordered anyway and it was awesome, tangy garlic, balsamic? Next the main course, ample servings for $16 each, a little oily but I'm sure it was 0 Trans Fat. Great veggies. Through out it all, a stream of music, some GodFather, some more rousty. Overall a delightful experience. It was Tuesday, small clientele, so maybe we got a little more attention than one would on the weekend. Coupon from Con Amore & Sapore is accepted weekdays.

best dinner and dance

Me and my husband went there for Valentine's. We chose different things from the special menu that we shared: we had salad and prawns to start which were great with the italian style bread with balsamic vinegar and olive oil and for entree we tried delicious chicken breast with prosciutto and the seafood risotto. The flavors were exquisite; I especially loved the touch of basil with the chicken and the crispy prosciutto that was holding everything together. The risotto was great as well, the seafood was fresh and tasty. The entrees took a while to come, however the band kept us on our feet most of the time. We loved the variety of songs the band played, some soft romantic songs, other hot latino and even some Cher and Abba. The service was decent, waiters very friendly. We will definitely go back there soon for more great food and for the great music they play.

Romantic restaurant

Laguna Blu is a great place for a date or anniversary. It has a beautiful view of the shimmering Fraser River and sometimes, music is playing. The fish is generally fresh and good. Prices and service are average for a seafood establishment. The wine selection is decent, too. It's too bad that that Quay Market around it has seen tough times.

Went to this restaurant with the family last mothers' day.

The establishment needed repairs and renos (laminate floor falling apart).

The food was average or less. It was a buffet day; however it was a real sparse buffet. Deserts were kept in the kitchen (pudding or something, maybe creme brulee ) Service was average. Parking fees in the lot.

I understad the Quay is nearly empty now, so I don't know if this has impacted LB or if it remains open.

Firm Xmas Party Nov 29/08
By sumiln of North Burnaby (32 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, December 1, 2008 - 12:26pm [Dine in]

My husband's firm held their Christmas party here. Quite a good space for 100+ attendees. Food seemed to be nice - antipasto plates set on tables upon arrival. Looked lovely but unfortunately for those of us who do not eat meat everything was piled on plate together (ie olives, cheeses, artichoke hearts together with meat slices). A very pleasant grilled bruschetta arrived shortly after this. Everyone seemed pleased with their meat & vegetable course and there was a pasta option for the likes of me which was quite fine. Must admit, the cheesecake I had for afters was the best bit and enjoyed it quite a lot. Dance floor ample and well laid out for the type of party held. Wait staff a bit off putting as they tended to push in and out without either eye contact or speech. Odd. Lovely view over the river here and the paddlewheeler is done up with Christmas lights so made for a pleasant ambience! Not a place I would attend for a quiet meal; strikes me as better set up for group parties. (As this was a firm party I've no idea re value but cannot submit without rating it somehow so kindly disregard the "decent" I have popped down!)

The worst experience with this restaurant

My wife and I were invited to our friend birthday in this restaurant on one Saturday night last summer (2008), there were about 10 couples of us came separately. 1st bad experience, we came the same time with one of our friend that happened to park his car next to ours. When we walk in, at the counter we we greeted by the owner with initial DM, my friend saw our group and greet them and walk over, the owner was not happy and chase my friend to the table ask him with very rude tone about register first. 2nd bad thing, after we sat down, we were presented with the menu. The lighting were very subdued. My wife could not read the menu and politely asking for torchlight. The owner instead of help, he said "if you can't read, then don't" and he pulled the menu from my wife. She was surprised where she offended him?. Afterward, may be he felt a bit regret. he asked one of his waiter to pass the menu back again to my wife, and my wife said to the waiter she needs torchlight to read the menu. And the waiter said she will find one. While waiting for the torchlight. The owner approached our table and started wanting to take order. And when he came to my wife, he kind of leaning towards her and ready for order. But my wife who already had bad impression with him asked him that she doesn't want to be served by him, instead by his waiter who will be coming with the torchlight. And he was furious, he said "if you don't like to be served by me, you can leave now". We were furious, and I said" if you do not like us as customer we will leave". And we left. Our friend who invited us felt bad and talked to the owner said we are a paying customers, and he said if you guys not happy all of you can leave.
Before I left, I asked if he is the owner and he said "yes", as from the first encounter until when we almost leave that we did not realized he was the owner. Cause we thought we could try to find someone higher in the hierarchy. Some of our friend stayed cause they already have some guests they invited, but they had very distress feeling up to the end of the night and swear never come back to this restaurant anymore. For the sake of your good night outing avoid this restaurant. The owner with the initial name DM ( We are not allowed by this webmaster to name a name). That was the worst experienced we ever had in our life eating in restaurant. The class is not as what it displayed.

It’s good to be back!

It felt very good to be back at Laguna Blu on Saturday. The well deserved two week vacation they took made me realize how much I enjoy going every week. I loved the ambiance on Saturday (Jan 17). We were a group of 12 people and because we reserved early we got the first table by the dance floor. The music just picked us off our seats; they played all our favourite songs and our funky requests. Even though the restaurant was packed, our appetizers came in quickly. We took our time ordering our mains and they came in fast enough and very tasty. I tried their pasta special “Linguine with Halibut, Snapper and Prawns with a Lemon Creamy Sauce” which was exquisite. At the server’s recommendation we ordered a bottle of white, Masi Masianico, which paired very well with my pasta. I had the Tiramisu for dessert and it was delicious as always.

Laguna Blu is the #1 destination for good food, an evening of dancing and friendly staff.

New Year's Celebration
By Dzidza of New Westminster (1 Review)
Submitted Thursday, January 1, 2009 - 3:25pm [Dine in]

Even though I read the reviews about this restaurant, unfortunately after we booked the New Year's dinner there (and many were not very positive) I still was hopeful that we will if nothing at least enjoy some good food. Well, we set our expectations too high, unfortunately.

I'm going to be kind and say that food was mediocre, ambiance was probably fine for guests seated at the best table, we were in the back, which is because we booked late, as I was told, so I can live with that. However, if you are under 65yrs of age, do not go and expect to enjoy live Italian/Spanish music. Music was dreadful.

Serving staff was nice; didn't expect the best service since is the busiest night for them, but they were nice and I've got no complaints. What would have been nice is if they offered us something else since we mentioned that we don't eat red meat and therefore didn't have one of the entrees included on the pre-set menu. Also, antipasto buffet, for an Italian restaurant, looked very poor to me. I've seen much, much better. To top it, the owner was not very friendly, I guess because we paid only $125 per person, so he didn't bother making us welcomed.

Even though we didn't let this ruin our NY's night, I know that I will never go there again.

Happy New Year!

don't go if you have a party with more than four guests. if your party has 20 people, be prepared to wait at least one hour for the food, which will come cold, and overdone. the salmon was burned and dry. the steaks, burned as well and the potatoes seemed to have been done the day before. the front of the table received welcoming basket of bread, while the other had to wait. by the time the end of the table received their food, the people seating at the front already finished eating.. too many people on the dance floor, and too many people in the restaurant at one time. i wonder if the restaurant is following the fire department guidelines, in the maximum occupancy for the place. some tables were placed on the dancing floor, and even at the entrance of the washrooms. are they so desperate for business? those people should eat for free. prices are too high for the location, and the quality of the food. for the same price you can enjoy good food downtown. very few waitresses, and very unprofessional. long tables, as if you are in a school cafeteria, not a restaurant. bottom line, don't go if you don't want to be stepped on your toes.

Best Calamari Around
By skervin of North Delta (6 Reviews)
Submitted Thursday, August 30, 2007 - 9:50pm [Dine in]

We went early on a Thursday evening, so we didn't get to experience the dancing that is typical of this restaurant, but we still had a great dining experience. The waitress claimed that they have the best calamari in town, so we ordered it and a plate of antipasti for our appetizers. I have to say that I agree with her. The batter on the calamari was light and flavorful, and the dip was the perfect accompaniment. I've never had better.

All four of us ordered pasta for our main dish. Mine was a homemade tagliatelle with mushrooms in a cream sauce. Really delicious! My fellow diners also enjoyed their dishes, but I think mine was the best pick of the lot. For dessert we tried some of the gelato. It's purchased from Mario's, so I can't credit Laguna's with the making of it, but the presentation was really beautiful.

The decor of the restaurant is adequate, but the chairs make it feel a little like a convention center instead of a nice dining establishment. That's only a minor complaint though. There is a great view of the river, so you're not likely to spend much time staring at the decor.

Unforgetable

After reading in the newspaper that this restaurant was named the best business of the year I decided to go and see what is so special about this place.

I can tell you that I was impresed. It was a Saturday night, the place was full to capacity, everybody was having a good time. People were dancing, eating, laughing. I never seen such a restaurant in Lower Mainland before.

Me and my friend had a table next to the window. The view was spectacular. The service was great and the food, although we had to wait a little bit (just because everyting is made at the moment)was real Italian. My friend was very pleased with his Mayor's Choice Rib eye steak. It was one of the biggest steak I ever seen...

There were a lot of people who really knew how to dance. Although we did not dance, we enjoy watching the others. It was like a free show.

Before leaving the owner came, talked to us and escorted us to the door. Him and his staff made us feel very special.

We will go there again soon.

Laguna Blu - home away from home
By Benedict of Burnaby (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, November 8, 2006 - 2:06am [Dine in]

Laguna Blu manages to make you feel at home instantly with friendly waiters and an amiable three-pirece dance band ready to play your requests. The dance floor is big enough to do all those fancy steps you never had room enough to execute before. Have a late dinner and you can get the dance floor practically to yourself! The band plays all the old favourites with each gig short enough to get your breath back. The menu offers good solid Italian fare with excellent and attentive service. The wine list is rich and varied and the prices are REASONABLE. An added bonus is the great view of the Fraser. My companion are I are sold on Laguna Blu now.
