Since our favorite Japanese restaurant closed, we’ve been on the search for a good replacement – but this is definitely not it.
Kojima has very little atmosphere to speak of, parts of the restaurant didn’t even have the lights on, but it did appear relatively clean. We were seated quickly and the speed of service was average but unfortunately the staff could not communicate well in English and did not have very good customer service skills – very one worded and blunt.
But, all this could have been overlooked if only the food wasn’t so completely poor. And I don’t just mean the taste not being to our preference but the actual technique was bad. The assorted tempura was so saturated with oil that simply pressing it would result in oil welling up – likely the fry oil was not hot enough so just absorbed the oil and was bitter from previous food bits burning in the fryer. Of the vegetable gyoza order we had only one because it was chewy and tasted doughy, not delicate like gyoza should be and that too was bitter from the pan used to fry them. We also ordered three rolls, California, Dynamite and Philadelphia. Dynamite was challenging to eat as it was rolled so loosely, it just fell apart. The crab in the California roll smelled fishy and the Philadelphia looked more than a little worse for wear.
… just can’t recommend.
Kojima Sushi is a couple blocks East of the really prime location in New Westminster but still well worth the short walk or drive. Went there today for lunch and had the Combo A and Bento Box A, as well as a Dynamite Roll. Combo A is probably the best value on the menu since for $8.99 you get a chicken teriyaki & rice, a bowl of Udon & an appetizer Tempura with 1 prawn & 3 huge yam tempuras. Very delicious and very filling.
The Bento Box A had 8 pieces of Cali roll, beef (or chicken) teriyaki & rice, and an appetizer tempura. Again, lots of food for the money ($7.49). All together the bill came out to $21 and that fed a very hungry mom, dad & two starving little kids. We all loved the food. The tempura was very crisp & huge (the batter was just a little hard but that made it stay crunchy even after dipping in the sauce. Our server was attentive and quick. The food was prepared very promptly so this hungry family didn't have long to wait.
We will be back for sure whenever we have a craving for Bento Boxes. Very good value and the ambiance is nice too, so good for a date as well as a quick bite. Lots of takeout orders while we were there so it looks like business is picking up. Which is good since this is a well run, good sushi place that we will be making one of our regular stops from now on.
