Our first and last visit to King Sushi was on April 6, 2012. The first thing we noticed upon entering was condition of the vinyl seats in the window booth. Cracked all over, they looked like they had sat in that spot for 50 years or so. We passed and sat in the next booth over. During our 45 min. stay we had three different servers even though there were only six or seven other tables with customers, and this likely led to the confusion we had toward the end of our meal. We ordered one more item and waited about 15 mins. for it, asked another server what had happened, and then waited another five for it to finally show up. The food up to that point was good, but nothing to really rave about...just another non-Japanese run sushi joint. Another off-putting thing was the constant shouting in Chinese coming from the kitchen. It sounded like the manager was angry at a staff member and this shouting resonated throughout the restaurant. It was both humorous and pathethic-what kind of restaurant manager would berate his staff like that within earshot of the customers? Anyway, it was an OK meal, but we won't be back.
King Sushi used to be an OK AYCE sushitorium, just a little better than Top Gun, but still a New West institution. Then, the mysterious fire. A year later, it's back. But with new owners and a new attitude.
I was oncerned that King Sushi might reopen as just another mediocre Uptown NW joint, but the restaurant recently exceeded my expectations.
The standard nigiri and rolls were good, but the specialty rolls were exceptional. Service was prompt and the price was reasonable. This incarnation is better than the last and should be around for a while.
The restaurant is all booths and some are very large where a group of 8 could easily fit. It is a little bright and they could improve the ambiance by trurning down some of the lights.
Service was attentive. Food was basic Japanese sushi and Bento Box but was very good. Order the Large Kirin Beer and split it between two.
Please disregard the ambiance rating as we ordered in delivery.
Delivery was fast, food was hot (tempura) or room tempurature (sushi) just the way it should be. The delivery was fast and reliable, and overall the sushi is a place I would definitely order in again. Please be aware they only do free delivery after 5pm.
King Sushi is a nice looking little place, the restaurant is comfortable and looks reasonably clean (though they have issues with cleanliness according to the health inspections reports).
The service is efficient but never really friendly. Still, they’re not rude and they rarely mess up your order. As with a lot of Japanese places though, you often get your appetizers at the end of your meal.
The food is not very good. The sashimi tastes like fish water, and often you can tell it’s been in the freezer for a while and it has just been unfrozen (some parts in the middle are still frozen). The gomae is weird, they don’t blend the sauce with the spinach and the sesame sauce tastes a bit like melted kraft peanut butter. The rolls are too heavy, there is too much rice.
The prices are reasonable but since the food isn’t very good, it’s not like the value is great.
I –might- give them other chances in the future but I can’t recommend the restaurant. Go to Sushi Paradise on 8th instead. It’s cheaper and much better, and only a few minutes walk away.
Two of us went for supper, and found the portions were small. We spent over they screwed up our order, and brought the appetizers last. The decor inside is nicer than many sushi restaurants in the area, however the food tasted ok, but left you hungry. Once our food arrived, we realized that we were going to be hungry afterwards, so we went next door for some wonton soup and some potstickers and were finally satisfied, at a fraction of the cost. Ordering more food at King Sushi was not an option, we will not be back.
I used to go to this restaurant for the AYCE lunch and found it to be so-so. Then they had the fire about a year ago and the restaurant went through some pretty major renovations.
Now the place has re-opened and I decided to try it with one of the teenagers. The restaurant no longer offers the AYCE and this was all right by me. I had the miso soup which was decent - I found that it didn't taste like powder like some I have had recently. I also had the Spicy Tuna Don and found the box that it came in was not so very easy to eat the rice with chopsticks, but I did finish it all without using the spoon that the servers provided. The tuna was melt-in-your-mouth tender and the sauce was pretty spicy but had some flavour. The teenager that I brought with me had the Agedashi Tofu and this was excellent. The tofu was crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. She also had the Gomae Salmon Don and found that the salmon was also very tender. The dons were not huge and the size of the pieces of fish was not huge either, but well worth the dollar value. So if you are looking for huge pieces of fish, this is not the place for you. But if you are looking for better quality (not the best) for the dollar value, try this one out.
I found the servers were very attentive and the tea was refilled without having to ask. The owner came over to ask the two of us how we found the food and I did let her know that I found that the quality was much better. So will I be back - definitely!
If you're looking for a Japanese restaurant that has top quality food, great service, and a cozy environment--King Sushi is the perfect place.
I have been a customer for over 3 years, and I have to say, after it's renovation everything seemed much better.
I have gone a few times since it's opened, and everything was just perfect. The food was always perfect. The waitresses are very attentive, with a lot of smiles. The ambiance of this restaurant is great, with suitable music.
I must say, this may be another underrated, or undiscovered secret of New Westminster. The outside may not be the most attractive place, but once you've gone, you won't regret it.
Last note: try the special rolls, like the Cheese Lover roll and Fire Dragon. Haven't seen them anywhere else, and they're great.
My husband and I have been here twice for lunch in the last few weeks.
The restaurant decor is nice, it looks like they have just renovated the dining area. It is a little dark in the back of the restaurant, though, so we ask to be seated in the front. The music is Japanese classical and suits the decor.
The servers are friendly and attentive, although one of them stopped paying attention to us while taking our order because her friends were walking in the door.
As for the food, we really enjoyed it. We had several different kinds of sushi rolls, sashimi, tempura and the miso soup. The sushi was great, very fresh tasting and in generous portions. The BC roll was especially good. However, their deep-fried sushi roll was pretty disappointing, it was too crunchy, had no rice and was mostly flavorless. The sashimi was fresh and delicious but the presentation was a little poor, as the fish was cut in very large chunks (rather than the thin slices we were expecting) so it was difficult to eat.
Overall we had a good experience, the prices were very reasonable and the food was great so I think we will be back!
This restaurant is extremely nice on the inside, however I went when they just opened and was disappointed. I ordered a variety of things and they were tasteless and mushy.
I don't know what all the hype is about, because I will never go back there after eating there. I noticed some pre-made cali rolls in the back, and some unsanitary practices from the chefs suchas picking stuff off the floor without washing hands. The wasabi was rockhard and the cali rolls we got were definitely pre-made. I would not recommend this place to anyone.
Rice is the base of Japanese cuisine, I don't understand why King sushi serves noodles instead of rice in their meat dishes! Anyway the food if alright, served professionally, they offer tea and water while seating a new customer, which I feel quite comforting. The food comes in japanese/oriental plates so looks very exotic. The quantities are smaller than expected, but overall it's not a bad experience. Also it's not owned by a Japanese, rather the owners are either chinese or korean!
