Located across from the New Westminster skytrain station. Reservations accepted Sunday thru Friday. Limited reservations accepted Saturday.
This review might be a bit unfair because I went here for a Christmas party for over 20 people and we were sat upstairs. Our reservation was for 8pm and it took a while for us to be sat down, but they came around with little finger food to tide us over with the late reservation.
The service was a good as can be for the amount of people in the Christmas party. Drinks took a while to come out and so did the appys. We got our order in quick for the mains because we wanted to have them served at an appropriate time.
All in all the servers did a good job. I ordered steak and lobster, the steak was done medium rare and was great. The twice baked potato was also nice and fluffy. My lobster was so so, but that's because the butter was cold that they brought out to dip in and they had put a huge amount of seasoning salt on the lobster... really salty.
I gave it a solid 3 all around, I've been to other Keg locations that have wow'd me and have horrified me. They are somewhere in the middle. I still prefer other steakhouses to the Keg though.
The food here is just like the Keg in Burnaby. However, this place is much nicer in comparison to the one in Burnaby. The view of the water is very pleasant and nice to have while you enjoy your dining experience here. The service was alright, enough for me not to comment anything bad. I would definitely come back here again.
I moved to New Westminster about a year ago, and it so happened that the Keg was conveniently within walking distance for me.
On my first visit, I dined by myself. Ordered my steak medium, and was served rare, so I showed the waiter and asked for it to be corrected. 20 minutes later, my plate comes back. The steak definately looked chared from the outside, but once I cut into it, the blood just oozed out of it. I'm somewhat upset at this point because I've being sitting at the table by myself twiddling my thumbs just to watch people be seated after me and then leave before I actually get to eat. 20 minutes later, again my plate comes back. The steak was not meduim done, it was overdone and dry. I left the steak, and ate the veggies and potatoe. On the positive side, the manager did come by and appologize, and complimented the dinner.
Now, with living so close, I eventually gave this location another try... thinking that my previous poor dining experiencce might have just been something that doesn't happen too often. I was wrong. Pretty much the same thing happened. I did say to the manager that given this is a steakhouse, the cooks should know how to cook a steak properly. To have the same problem happen in two consecutive visits suggest that the kids in this kitchen don't put alot of care in what they are sending out.
The look of the place was nice.... liked it. I can't blame my poor experience on the waiter as they were quite attentive and somewhat embarrased as to the quality of food that came out of the kitchen.
Given the prices on the menu, management needs to ensure that the quality of food coming out of the kitchen is good value. My impression in seeing the cooks at work in the kitchen was not very good... playing practical jokes on eachother... it was like there was a party going on in the kitchen. It did not look like there was any head-chef that was checking the quality of food that was being sent out.
My recommendation to anyone who wants an awesome steak dinner... skip the Keg altogether, spend the extra 10 or 15 bucks per plate, and go to Hy's Steakhouse in downtown Vancouver. You won't regret it.
We met at the Kegfor a birthday party for about 14 people from my wife's work. They put us on the outside area...what a nice atmo. It was at 8pm but we had a nice cute waitress with beautiful legs and hair. The steak was great along with a wedge salad, mashed potatoes and beans. The calimari was the best. Wine was great as well. Would to back again. Went June, 22nd, 2011. F
Food: Absolutely amazing. Had the crab, artichoke and spinach dip and it tasted awesome and the chips it came with were not just store bought but seemed like they were made at the restaurant - very yummy. I had the chicken and seafood newberg which tasted amazing and the mashed potatoes it came with was great. My bf had the new york peppercorn steak and he loved his dish. Overall awesome food experience.
Service: We were greeted right away and shown a table immediately. It took a long time for the server to come around to take our drink orders and normally I would be upset for the rest of the night about the service but it turned out to be not so bad. Only had to ask for water once and the rest of the time, he was on the ball.
Ambiance: Horrible, horrible and horrible. They were playing reggae music but the restaurant is built around the "old New West" feel with the black and white pics of the city from the 30s and the wooden planks for walls. Their ceiling looked like it had leaked at some point but they didn't bother to cover up the ugly brown stains. Wiring can be seen all along the walls. They also have this hideous green and red lighting throughout the dining area that really bothered me. We had a red light above our table and I couldn't see my food properly and to be honest, it just bugged the hell outta me. They really need to renovate the joint.
Came here with my family and what a mistake that was. We originally wanted to go the burnaby location but they don't take reservations over there. I've been to other Keg locations, granville island, downtown, burnaby and richmond and they've all been pretty good, this one is a joke! All our steaks were overdone, my dad had to ask for coffee like 4 times before the waiter brought it and it was not that busy. My billy miner ice cream cake was obviously sitting up at the passbar for a while because when I got it it was the billy miner milkshake! Bad service, bad food why bother!!!!
I love the ambiance of this location. The food and service is consistant with the other locations, but what really sets this location apart from the others is that it used to be an old train station stop turned The Keg. It was part of the buildings destroyed by the Great Fire of 1898, and was re-built in 1899. Rumours have spirits still live in the basement and at night, workers can hear them call their name! A lot of history from Vancouver's oldest city in this little building.
I don't go to the Keg for a reason. I have poor memories from a long time ago. However, we were out walking, there was the Keg, we asked if they could seat two people for dinner. I'm sure they've changed in 10 years. Wrong. This Keg has not changed.
The steak was tasteless. Big hunk of meat, with no taste, no carmelization, sort of "browny." My Ahi seared tuna, same problem. Big hung of tasteless tuna. Seared, yes. No flavour, no sauces, b-o-r-i-n-g.
The waitress, very lively, chatty, high energy, but just immature enough not that she easily crossed the line into "playing" us. She said, "wow, that tuna looks good from here!" Wink, wink. Not having fallen off a turnip truck I silently mumbled "you patronizing little twit."
Tables, -sitting accross from each other? That's for school cafeteria's or old married people. I rearranged the furniture so we could sit at 90 degrees. I still like my dear woman.
Prices? $86 for 2 entrees, 1 appy, 2 Corona. Hmmmm. If I'd had a full meal, dessert and wine, the bill would have been Seasons in the Park range. This place is nowhere near "Seasons." So overpriced, - absolutely.
I also don't like the wine manipulation. Welcome to BC. When 2 people consume a bottle of wine, you end up with a suspended license. Think "customer." Think 1/2 bottles. It can be done you know.
Is it me or is there absolultely no ambiance in that place?
Anyway, keep working on it. I'll be back in 2020 with my care aide and walker. I"ll give you another chance then. This place is all about money, it's a hustle. Children playing restaurant and charging adult pricess. I'm not amused.
Out of all of the Kegs I've been too over the years, I'd have to say that this location is definitely the COLDEST! To be fair, however, I visited this one in the dead of winter on one of the coldest nights of the year, but I had to wear my winter coat the entire time I was there. I think the heat must have conked out because most of the people around me were also wearing their coats. Otherwise, the food was decent and the service was as good as it always is at any Keg location. I think because the restaurant is located within the old train station, it's really drafty, probably almost year-round. But overall, a decent visit - next time, I'll just order a coffee to keep my hands warm!
Can you ever go wrong when dining at the Keg? I think not. I get a warm fuzzy feeling each & every time I visit. I have never been disappointed.
The service is always fantastic, the wait staff are on key & dang, that food is irresistable! I love going in on a Friday after work, ordering a few drinks while perusing the menu. The staff do not pressure you to hurry up!!
I love it, love it, love it!!!!
We went on a Tuesday night with my wife and started with a couple of their appies. The wine arrived around the same time. The steaks were plump and tasty. My wife had the sirloin which she said melted in her mouth, and the fries were a nice accompaniment. She really enjoyed the dish.I choose the rib eye and it was an awesome steak, really meaty and smoky in flavour. We were too stuffed to try any desserts, but we'll be back. They need to accept reservations and hire some leggy waitresses. many other restaurants have done so and Keg is falling behind.
To update on my previous post - I can't figure out how to delete a review that I have already left.
I received today a letter dated Oct 19, and postmarks the 21st of Oct. Apparently Canada Post in all their glory lost a letter which I got today from the General Manager of this location. He wrote a personal letter and sent a gift certificate. When I called to thank him for it, I was offered the opportunity to give him a call when we want to come back and he will personally see to our dining experience.
Because of this we will give them another chance.
Went for a birthday dinner on Aug. 7th and we were VERY happy with our meals! My friend had prime rib and I had the sirloin with lobster, shrimp and asparagus. We both LOVED our meals! My ceasar drink was just so-so, my friend enjoyed her wine. The beef was cooked to order and service was efficient. We were seated on the second floor and it is unappealing at best. Serious renos would help. Good thing I didn't read all the previous bad reviews or I prob wouldn't have had one of my best meals ever. We will go back for the food!
We just moved to New West and decided to try out the Keg at the Quay.
As a background, we have eaten regularly at the Keg's other locations in Downtown Vancouver, and also our recent new favourite, the Willingdon location, and have, in general, found that the food, service and ambience are good value for the price.
Not here, unfortunately. Because -
1. Food was so so. Both my sirloin and husband's prime rib were blatantly overdone with no apology or explanation from the wait staff. Green salad was limp and tired; the escagot starter was ok, but I've had much livelier food from a microwave dinner box. Overall, no up to Keg standard.
2. Service was spotty: our original waitress disappeared halfway only to reappear at the end to present the bill, with no explanation to hand-off to the other waiter (who was great, btw).
3. Ambience: zero. The exterior brick wall and old-style "the Station" motif implies updated old-style chic", but the interior did not match this expectation. The decor was out-dated (visualize: ski-lodge decor of the 80's), the walls were scruffy, and the overhead exposed HVAC ducts were obviously dusty. Throughout dinner I was preoccupied with the amount of dust and stuff falling into my food, rather than being relaxed and enjoying dinner.
Will not go back again; and will tell friends & fam to spend their money and time somewhere else.
I also reviewed this Keg on their website and they responded with a gift card... So we gave it another shot... This time I brought my girlfriend and her parents down...
They were busy, but the service was excellent, the wine was re-poured, and they offered some specials etc.
I wasn't happy with the king crab portions being inconsistent or the cut of the prime rib last time... But this time I ordered the Filet Chicago style (charred outside, rare inside) with King crab (not on the menu but as an add on) and they were outstanding...
We asked to sit downstairs as the upstairs bathrooms are horrible (as I emphasized in my other review) but we discovered that the upstairs bathrooms are the only bathrooms... so they really need improvement... They are gross...
So to be fair they were better the second time, but the bathrooms are still in urgent need of renovations...
I have been here quite often; it's close, and I'd rather not trundle off a long way just to have a steak.
I'm a big fan of the Keg escargot, and the Mushrooms Neptune. The escargot is very consistent here, but the Mushrooms Neptune has varied from hardly any topping at all, to far too much. The main course, usually either the prime rib, a new york steak, or a fliet mignon, has ranged from good (never great) to downright terrible. One time I got a new york steak that was quite, quite raw in the middle (not blur rare, but literally cold and raw), and was so gristley I could not eat it. I sent it back and was not offered a replacement for free, and the only reflection on the bill was that the starter was free. Bad mojo that. I've tried lobster once each at three different Kegs, and it has been consistently dreadful, so I will not try it here.
Unlike some reviewers here I've had nothing but really, really good servers. And although I never seem to get the same person more than once, and am never remembered by any of the staff (tsk, tsk), I always tip well in the hope of some future remembrance. Ha, ha. Naive old me.
Keg's are, I feel, somewhat overpriced. and considering how inconsistent this one is I feel it is definitely a little overpriced.
Also unlike many folks here I quite like the ambience and atmosphere, so long as I get one of the slightly more isolated tables.
I am generally a Keg fan, so I will be back.
It doesn't even feel like the keg!!!! maybe i'm getting used to their nicest one on willingdon... went with friends recently, and my stake was overcooked, there were flies hovering over our dingy table on the very dark and stuffy second floor, the server never removed the menues (we had to remove them ourselves) as well as the dirty dishes; the table was really small for a group of 10, and we needed room! parking around the area is really bad. I would absolutely never go back in there, is just not worth it. If i could rate 0 for value, I would do it.
I thought this place was small for the building which meant long lines and then the food wasnt that great. Steaks were decent and the lobster was good, but it wasnt outstanding. Considering the price and the fact that I can make a lot more food at home, the way I like ti better then them I wasn't overly amused.
Then came the bathroom, there were a lot of unused empty tables upstairs by the girls bathroom and I was extremely disappointed that they would leave an entire section empty only to have extremely long lines down below. Parking is attrocious.
Theres nothing overly special about this location, the food is decent as its the keg but it doesnt stand out. However, when I later did some research about the historical building its located in I found that its one of the most haunted places in B.C. Maybe they should remarket the restaurant, and just give haunted tours because other then that theres not much special here.
Last night my boyfriend and I went to the Keg in New West for dinner. Our server was very friendly and helpful. We had the Baked Garlic Shrimp appy which was excellent. I had the Sirloin Classic Dinner, and my boyfriend had the Steak and 1/2 Lobster of their feature menu. It was excellent. My only complaint is not about the food or the service, but the building itself. I know it's a very old building, but could they please put another bathroom in there?! They're all the way at the top of the restaurant in a small, stuffy room. Overall, great time, excellent service, and delicious food.
We always have wonderful service at the Keg, no matter the location. The place was extremely busy but the waitress spent time catering to our needs and never had to ask if we'd like refills. The food was excellent and we had an enjoyable time. Just wish you didn't have to pay extra for the veggies with a meal...
