Kasuga Sushi is an authentic Japanese restaurant with quality food and friendly staff.
I went to Kasuga a few times before when I used to live in New West. It's a neat little restaurant in a two-storey house, but I've never dined on the top floor before. Their food is always fresh and their service is just great. I've been there for lunch more than dinner and they have these awesome lunch specials for under $10. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone. The only negative thing is that, in the past, I have had to wait for some time for a seat. But that's because it's always so busy!
I am writing this review upon my recent decision only to eat sushi when it's really worth it, not just whenever you happen by a sushi place. I've had too much mediocre sushi, and the place closest to home is no good at all. But, as I live in New Westminster, I'm glad there is a place that's not too far from my front door to have pretty good sushi from time to time. I really like this place. Their Alaska roll is my favourite, but most of it is good, fresh tasting stuff, and I have no complaints about the service. Also, if you ask, they do have wild salmon, which a lot of places don't offer. I'm glad this place exists in New West because you need a good standard for those times when you just NEED to eat sushi.
The title says it all! The food is incredible, you won't expect places like New West has such good food but this place is a great exception! Their tempura is perfect, so is there udon, appetizer boat and everything else. The best of all? Crispy roll! It's a roll that has two prawn tempura and California roll stuffing topped with tobiko and tempura batter with their homemade sauce! This special roll and the fact that I can count on a great Japanese meal w/o having to go to downtown or pay downtown prices is worth me driving half an hour just to eat there!
The driftwook archway marking the entrance leads to a small garden in front of the restaurant, complete with a small bamboo fountain. The restaurant is located in a converted house, so it can be forgiven for its shortcomings there. I can't decide if I prefer a table by the windows in front, or a table in the cozier feeling upstairs room, away from the entrance. After being seated, you'll be brought a hot towel for your hands and face. The service is extremely polite. We've been here a few times, and ordered several types of nigiri, yakisoba, tempura, and chawan mushi. All were a little higher quality than what you get in the average sushi restaurant, but the price is also correspondingly higher. This is the local restaurant we come to when we want a special meal.
I have been here a number of times with co-workers. We have always had to wait for a table. The seats are quite cramped, and the upstairs is very hot in the summer.
The sushi is very good, as are all the lunch boxes. Prices are reasonable.
Service is quite slow, and most of my servers have had a very poor command of English.
We decided to try out this place after read the positive reviews and we really hope to find a good decent sushi place in the neighbourhood. The decor is average, not too old but also nothing up to date. The place is spacious enough to seat. We ordered the wild salmon sashimi, alaska roll, special scallop roll and oyaka don. We wanted to try out their daily specials rolls but was told that they were not served anymore. I wondered why they still posted on the board. The servers were fine and polite but the restaurant is not run by Japanese,
The wild salmon sashimi was quite tasty with a decent portion. The alaska roll was ok but nothing impressive. The special scallop roll was little disappointing as it tasted plain. The Oyako don was a big turn off. The sauce was alright but we could taste the rawness of the chicken. It was not marinated enough to cover the frozen meat taste. The servers were fine and polite.
The food it okay, but it's not innovative at all. The owner is not Japanese, he's a grumpy old Korean man. The servers are Japanese though, I am not sure about the cooks! Anyway, I prefer Paradise sushi or Rikka's kitchen better than Kasuga, if I feel like eating Japanese food.
Their Combos are good value for lunch, but I don't like their miso soup at all, taste like it was made days ago!
Nice litte Japanese restauarant in New Westminster. They have great lunchbox specials, and the food is always tasty and fresh. Sometimes the seating can get a bit cramped if you go on weekdays at lunch time. I found the service especially outstanding- servers are attentive and especially hospitable and warm. Overall, I would say the best place for sushi in New Westminster.
Small and cosy authentic japanese restarant with one of the best sushi in town. Authentic Japanese atmosphere (even music is japanese), sushi is freshly made and staff is extremelly nice and friendly. Sushi quality is at par with Sushi house on Kingsway.
