Hon's Wun Ton House is a cafeteria-style, chinese restaurant in New Westminster well known for its won tun and noodle dishes.
Sometimes, you just have cravings. Some people crave ice cream, others crave chocolate. Sometimes, my friends and I crave Hon's. It's true that their food is a bit too greasy, but it's tasty, especially the chow mein. Considering how crowded it is, the servers get things done with amazing efficiency. I don't really like how busy it is, but overall, it is a good place to eat Chinese food.
A very well-known place to go in New West. The food makes up for the horrible ambiance (little room and it really does look like a cafeteria) and the poor staff service (I don't think I've ever seen one of the waiters smile).
But the food is SO good. My friends and I just order a whole bunch of dishes and share them between ourselves. The menu is huge and has some really great dishes on it
I eat regularly at the Coquitlam Hon's. The New Westminster location isn't nearly as good. The few times I have been there, the floor is ridiculously slippery with grease or oil. I have tried to pick up congee here several times when I was sick, and they never seem to have it. In general the food just doesn't taste as good at this location than other Hon's locations.
Yes, I admit the food is good. But it's so crowded, so noisy and so very dirty. Wish they would spruce up the place and give it a thorough cleaning. I just can't bring myself to eat there since I read the restaurant inspection reports: they have had many infractions involving hygiene, including a problem with vermin... yuck.
After hearing about this place for years, and observing line ups, I wanted to give this a place a try.
Came in after the dinner rush, and found the tables to be kind of grungy. Not a huge deal, but noted.
Food was OK. Reasonably priced, but a little more greasy, sugary, and saltier than expected.
Staff started to clean up, wash up, and stack chairs when our food arrived. Hey - if you don't want to serve later customers, then don't.
Lots of other places to try before I come back.
Decent food at a reasonable price. Noodle soups are definately above average. I like the beef brisket with rice noodle. Other menu choices are also good. Chicken chow mein (crispy noodles) is one of my mom's favorites. Most dishes are served fairly quickly so this is a good place to go for lunch if you're looking for a quick meal. They even have some dim sum items.
I first visited Hon's for take-out dinner in February 2008...the food was marginally satisfactory. However, the food on my next visit was not particularly tasty; in particular, the shrimp fried rice was devoid of flavour and too dry.
There are plenty other establishments to try out in Vancouver that I don't need to waste my money on known inferior quality food and service.
We love Hon's for a quick bite. The chicken corn soup is really, really good! The 'small' soup is enough for 2 adults for only $4! I prefer to order vegetarian dishes here b/c sometimes that chicken is diced into pieces that are too large for my liking, but the flavour is always quite good. The service is...efficient. No frills, just good food. Same thing for ambiance. Go only for the food. :)
I went to Hon's for their take-out, and was very glad I did, for two reaons: one, the resteraunt is very very busy and two, their food is amazing. It isn't a big surprise that Hon's is so crowded and busy (with people lined up outside!) because the food is so good! It doesn't appear on a decrative platter or look very fancy, but that shouldn't be the reason people go out to eat. We go out to eat for the food. Hon's potstickers are a must-try and they pride themselves in this dish. You can also buy them frozen to take home, along with their own sauce!
This place is always crowded, but excelent choice for take out.
Order by phone because they are always busy. $35 will buy you a dinner for 4 hungry people.
Excelent pot stickers (gyozas). I also like their sweet-n-sour pork and ginger beef.
I just recently moved into New Westminster and having lived all over the Lower Mainland and not being a great cook; I have had my fair share of take out/delivery food! I have had Hon's Wun Tun House food at least 2-3 times since moving here a month ago. I have to say that Hon's Wun Tun House has the best Chinese take out food in the Lower Mainland!
Have always had consistent tasty chinese food here. Affordable fixed menus where 3 of us ate for under 20-. Love their fried potstickers and the steamed ones with the black spicy vinegar too. They have nice congee and roasted duck. Like their freezer section for items to bring home and steam. Enjoy their pre -packaged dim sum to go at Save on freezer sections too!
I have lived in New West for 3 yrs. Moved from Vancouver Island, so back then I knew nothing about area restaurants. I asked the locals where to get the best Chinese food. They all love Hon's. I am a trusting soul, so given the overwhelming approval for this place I have given it more chances than it deserves. In fact, I have tried takeout once and dine-in twice in the past 3 years. Each time eating in the place was dirty and uncomfortable. Service is brusque and uncaring. Takeout and dine in, the food was lousy. Is that too blunt? It's true. I feel like the kid in the story about the Emperor's New Clothes. Why are people so impressed? It is HORRIBLE Chinese food, people. It tastes like burnt oil, old fish and unidentified greasy, bitter substances. I will never, ever make the mistake of eating Hon's food again. Blech!
Hon's has fab food and very good service! Ambiance is not the focus with Hon's rather the focus is all about the food and they are good at what they do! Since I eat their on a regular basis for both lunch and dinner and some days both I can't say I have ever had bad food. The price of their food is great. You can get a beer for well under the price of any other eating establishment in New West I find!
A great place for chinese fast food. If you're looking for quality chinese food this is not the place for you. The food is good and they serve it pretty quickly after you order. Don't expect much on the service side. It is a fast food restaurant after all. I wonder how often they clean the place. It's pretty dirty and I avoid using the washroom at all costs.
Went here for lunch with the wife the other day. Ordered beef pot stickers, curry beef brisket with rice, and Shanghai noodles with green beans and pork.
Service was slow and inattentive to begin with (even for Hon's) and then the server said they didn't have steamed pot stickers so we went with pan-fried. Loads of grease is the best way to describe them which was quite a bit worse then previous times we've had them there. Curry beef brisket was good, always order it here, nice and tender. Noodles were like a greasy spaghetti with no sauce and little bits of pork thrown in. Not a winner.
Paid the bill and got out. The place looks like it could use some upkeep to say the least. Still, value is pretty good if your standards are low.
Went here Thursday evening 8pm. Have been to Hon's other locations in Vancouver and Richmond. The other locations are better than New West. So, if you can put up with crappy service and indifference from the mostly male servers, then you will get good food and great value. The potstickers were on special at $3.37/dozen for their 37th anniversary (although they were definitely lacking in flavour this time). Food quality has gone down over the years, but still--if you know what you are getting, then worth the visit for a quick cheap meal.
I go to this Hon's quite frequently...I've never had a big problem with the cleanliness or service...then again I usually try and go before/after the lunch/dinner rushes...the food's pretty good, and they serve good portions...no complaints with the prices either...
Never had incredible food or service when coming here. Here are a few of my experiences:
Dining In: The place is always borderline filthy, and the service is rude but quick. They want you in and out as quick as possible. The dim sum is not very good, and you'd have better quality food and service if you go down the street to Dragon Place.
Takeout: Always comes greasy, but is quick. Sometimes too quick and they'll tell you 20 minutes but it's made sooner than that so it ends up sitting there and getting cold.
Delivery: First and last time ordering from this place. I ordered around 9pm, and the food, no joke, did not come until 10:45pm. I called after 90 minutes and they didn't know the proper address. So when they finally did come, not only did I pay around $50 for a large order, but all of the food was cold, soggy and disgusting.
I've been to other Hon's before, and this one was by far the worst.
Everytime we go to Hon's it is usually busy. But we only wait around 5 minutes everytime. I see that the employees try there best to go as quickly as possible to get you a seat. The employees are quick on there feet and notice you quickly when you come in. Potstickers and house special chow-mein are Awesome and Delicious ! !
