Favorite for Chinese Take-out
By millar of New Westminster, Vancouver (69 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, February 7, 2011 - 2:33pm [Take-out]

Hon's is my favorite restaurant in New West for Chinese take-out. I prefer it to dining in, as they are very busy so when you dine in you feel a bit rushed to sit, eat and leave.

I don't think the menu has changed in 10 years so you find your favourite dishes and stick with them. Try the Beef lettuce wrap, BBQ pork, Deep-fried boneless chicken with crushed almond, Buddhist feast of Vegetables, House chow mein, Dry Garlic spareribs.

Remember to ask if they've included soy sauce, napkins, etc when you pick it up as take-out is always busy and these things sometimes get forgotten.

dirty, but good eats

I go to this Hon's location whenever I am hungry in New West. I must say that overall the service is usually efficient but only that. As for the food, they serve up the same dishes as other Hon's. Ambiance is not terrific. This is easily the worst Hon's on that score. It is also the dirtiest of the lot. Last time I was there (3 of weeks ago) I had 6 pork potstickers and a bowl of beef brisket with noodles in soup. It was tasty as always.

Let's face it, you don't go to this kind of place for haut cuisine. I'll be back for more. I like to live on the edge :)

Greasy!!!

Worst duck, ever. Service wasn't good at all and food took too long for coming lukewarm. Portions are huge but too fatty and low quality. Wonton soup was waaaay too salty and I hated the egg rolls. The place was overly crowded and there was a lot of kids crying. Which is ok but I was already annoyed and it amplified the whole deal. Not coming back.

Cheap and Greasy
By IkoIkoComic of New Westminster (2 Reviews)

I saw "Cheap and Greasy" as one of the review titles for Hon's - and I agree 100%. Hon's is cheap and greasy. The only caveat is that I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Sometimes that's exactly what I feel like, and then Hon's is there, waiting for me, with rubbery potstickers and a bowl of satisfying chow-mein, all served with a pot of chili oil. Omm nom scarf nom nom.

Last time I went, I had 12 steamed pot-stickers and a 'special chow mein'. The special chow mein was loaded down with seafood and green beans (I wish they would have mentioned the green beans on the menu. Ugh.) - but wiht a little bit of chili oil and some time to cool down, it was a pile of delicious. The pot-stickers were pot-stickers.

Don't go to Hon's expecting Haute Cuisine, and it'll treat you right. And by 'right', I mean 'cheap, and filling, and you can get a gross of pot-stickers'.

Good potsickers.. wonton soup

This restaurant seems pretty cramped and the tables never seem very clean. Service is fine... I get my food in a timely manner but then the servers seem to disappear from sight and ignore me unless I wave my hand frantically to get them to my table.

Food wise, I love their potstickers and wonton soup. I have tired their other dishes and I haven't found one that I thought was better than "okay".

I now usually end up buying the frozen pot stickers and making them at home. That way I don't have to deal with the restaurant. I only go back now to buy their frozen food.

Coming to this Hon's always kinda scares me. It's always dirty, inside and out. It's a very old location with a desparate need of a restaurant make-over.
The few times I've come here, the tables were always sticky, even after their 1 second wipe-down. I question how clean their table rags are to begin with.
The restaurant is pretty small creating line-ups during the lunch hour all the time.
Food is okay, at least it tastes that way - how can you go wrong with potstickers?? I love that the have dimsum specials.
However, they don't have very many good chinese restaurant in New West, so I would still come here.

It's just like any other Hon's - expect pretty good food at cheap prices and rudish waiters but this location is worse than the rest because it's the dingiest of them all, although I haven't been to the Coquitlam location but I'm assuming so. And I don't know if it's because it's the location or what but I always find myself surrounded by the oddest people. Maybe its the water...

we USED to come here all the time...

...from North Delta. We thought we could overlook the "ambiance thang" if the food was good...

And IT USED TO BE. We came at least once a week, endured the lineups and the "casual" service.

The past few times we've been, the food is NOT ao good, and the slack service is starting to get "not so charming"....

I'm sorry that a reasonably accessible place has gone downhill. We haven't been there for many months, based mostly on the "meh" service and the "meh" food.

Gone *way* down hill from the good old days.

Our usual Chinese place is closed on Tuesdays, so we decided to give the new owners of this Hon's one last chance, and true to form they totally disappointed.

The food was barely edible. I mean, it was not good. The chicken balls were mystery meat specials. I think they were pork. My wife thought maybe old chicken tidbits, pressed scraps or something. The batter was better than the meat. The sauce for them was thin, vinegary, and had a nasty oily sheen.

The spring rolls were mostly wrapper, and were freezer burned. Unreal! The potstickers were wafer thin and almost transparent. A far cry from the plump dumplings that used to be served.

Shrimp fried rice was acceptable and that's the kindest thing I can say about it. It tasted like white rice with chicken oxo cube broth and frozen vegetables stirred in. The shrimps were small and sparse. It was like a little treasure hunt game to find the seafood.

The only thing that was remotely tasty was the curried beef brisket.

Service gets a three because it was ready very quickly and they were pleasant on the phone. Saw the reason for the quick service when we rolled in to pick up; the place was almost empty. At 6pm there were only three or four tables of people. This restaurant used to be packed with a line out the door every night at this time.

Don't think we'll be going back.

With Hons you know what you are getting. They have been consistent from teh begining offering reasonably priced large portioned chinese food. I have found the flavour has gone downhill in last few years but still a consistent spot for chinese food at a very reasonable price. get the potstickers they are always a tasty favorite

Reviews of Hon's are bound to be somewhat predictable, because predictable is what makes them great. You know when you go to Hon's (regardless of location) you're going to get Chinese food that tastes like you think Chinese food should tsate like. Now, I don't know which came first, the tsate of Hon's or the taste of Chinese food, but in my mind they are synonymous (or maybe they put mind altering additives in the pot stickers). Me likee.

Less than impressed with this restaurant
By Northwynd of New Westminster BC (1 Review)

After reading all the good reviews for Hon's Wun Tun House, we decided to try it for ourselves. We love Asian food, specifically Chinese cuisine, and with the number of positive reviews this restaurant has, we were expecting delicious food. Sadly, we were quite disappointed in our order. The wun tun soup, a favourite of ours, was flavoured with an unknown seasoning which, in our opinion, rendered the soup almost unpalatable. We found the fried rice to be quite bland, and the chow mein was very greasy and unflavourful. Deciding to be fair, and attributing our disappointing meal to an "off" night, we opted to give it one more try. Unfortunately, we were again disappointed by the same issues (lack of flavour, greasy food, over-priced for the quality of food presented) and thus will not be eating there again.

They say eat where the locals do.

Our family has enjoyed this spot for many years. Having tried all the other locations (ironically except the one in Chinatown) this is the one we invariably return to.

Cleanliness is not a strong suit here. They are extremely busy and I guess they do the best they can. This is crowded spot. So they clean your table & seat you, but don't look at the floor!

The food and the low prices are the draw here. Chinese food is not cheap but Hon's turn it out in such volume it is very affordable here. You can easily feed a family of 4 for under $30 and have another meal at home with the leftovers.

The kids always liked the potstickers, which are the chinese version of gyoza or perogies. They come in several forms but we prefer them pan fried. Beef with black bean sauce on a bed of crispy noodles is a favourite.

The tea is hot and they do a good job of keeping your glass full.

You can purchase many of the items they serve in the restaurant in frozen format & also sell some of their product at the T & T Supermarket Chain.

So if you are not looking for a fancy dining experience, try your local Hon's. I'd recommend the New West location.

Hon's has gone downhill for all locations

ate here maybe two years ago. worst hon's experience ever. My family and I were avid Hon's fans, often ate at chinatown's location as a kid. Recently in last half year, even my parents have given up hoping for a good meal at hon's. (chinatown's was the best location out of the others).

west min's one is really cramped (forget ambiance as hon's is like a cafeteria setting anyhow), totally different style soup and noodles (short and what seems like broken noodles), bland/just salty soup and the wontuns ddidn't taste the same

We regular frequent the Coquitlam and Chinatown Hon's but decided to drop by the New West one yesterday for lunch as the food was decent years ago. Their potstickers were good but there wasn't any of the little flakes of ginger in the sauce like everywhere else. We ordered House chow mein, hardly any meat or fish, and missing the scallops, the green beans were tasteless , the deep fried noodles (not panfried) were terribly, similar to the "Farkay" brand they have at superstore. Maybe they save time that way by prefrying the noodles. Go to the Coquitlam one, it is MUCH better in terms of quality, taste and they give you more quanity of topping for your money !

Cheap and greasy
By DrNo of Main St. Vancouver (7 Reviews)

Went here for lunch with the wife the other day. Ordered beef pot stickers, curry beef brisket with rice, and Shanghai noodles with green beans and pork.

Service was slow and inattentive to begin with (even for Hon's) and then the server said they didn't have steamed pot stickers so we went with pan-fried. Loads of grease is the best way to describe them which was quite a bit worse then previous times we've had them there. Curry beef brisket was good, always order it here, nice and tender. Noodles were like a greasy spaghetti with no sauce and little bits of pork thrown in. Not a winner.

Paid the bill and got out. The place looks like it could use some upkeep to say the least. Still, value is pretty good if your standards are low.

Good value but poor service
By viewlot of Vancouver (2 Reviews)

Went here Thursday evening 8pm. Have been to Hon's other locations in Vancouver and Richmond. The other locations are better than New West. So, if you can put up with crappy service and indifference from the mostly male servers, then you will get good food and great value. The potstickers were on special at $3.37/dozen for their 37th anniversary (although they were definitely lacking in flavour this time). Food quality has gone down over the years, but still--if you know what you are getting, then worth the visit for a quick cheap meal.

A very well-known place to go in New West. The food makes up for the horrible ambiance (little room and it really does look like a cafeteria) and the poor staff service (I don't think I've ever seen one of the waiters smile).

But the food is SO good. My friends and I just order a whole bunch of dishes and share them between ourselves. The menu is huge and has some really great dishes on it

Decent food at a reasonable price. Noodle soups are definately above average. I like the beef brisket with rice noodle. Other menu choices are also good. Chicken chow mein (crispy noodles) is one of my mom's favorites. Most dishes are served fairly quickly so this is a good place to go for lunch if you're looking for a quick meal. They even have some dim sum items.
