This is the 2nd location of Cockney Kings Fish & Chips which has been a Burnaby landmark since 1965. Serving all you can eat fish and chips on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.
So I usually go to this place at least a couple times a month. Probably one of the best deals around for ayce (all you can eat). For $10 you get as much fish and chips as you want. I would also like to note that you do not HAVE to get mroe chips with your fish. You can always just order more fish. STRAIGHT GOODS! Food quality is decent, the fish isn't too greasy but definetly not the healthiest thing to eat. Definitly would recommend this!!!
It's a fish and chips place. The ambiance is nothing special, kind of blah, reminiscent of an old Denny's or something. You seat yourself which is kind of... raw. And at the end, you pay a cashier. It is what it is. Fish is expensive. Period. Halibut and chips was great. We didn't find it greasy at all. Service was acceptable for what it is. Coleslaw was good too. It's close by which is great for a quick fix.
Arrived Wednesday with my dining partner at 5pm. We had never been here before and to our delight it was all you can eat fish and chips for ten bucks night, bonus. AYCEFAC goes Monday thru Wednesday, fyi.
We were quickly seated by a very friendly waitress who took our order of pop and the all you can eat fish and chips. Take note, the all you can eat fish and chips deal features only Tilapia so don't expect all you can eat Cod or Halibut.
Before we knew it our drinks and then dinners arrived in record time. The fish was delicious, perfectly battered, not greasy , pipping hot , nice moist fish. We both were very impressed.
Not sure what people are talking about service. We received some of the best service ever experienced.
Our re-fill drinks came immediately, we were asked if we wanted more fish a couple of times and overall the servers were absolutely outstanding.
Can't wait to head back for more AYCEFAC, may even try some of their other items all very reasonably priced.
Not worth the price in my opinion. Food is pretty good but we weren't blown away. Did enjoy the classic fish and chips english style but wanted more. The salad appetizer was delicious and my wife was enjoying it I guess. She is on a diet again. fish was too rich. Goat cheese on the side was very good but also super rich.
These people are wonderful. They were incredibly busy but still treated me very special. The waitresses were kind and efficient. My server found time to attend my table three times to check on me and they wee full with patrons waiting to get in. The food was fantastic and was very fast. Treat yourself and go here for some fish and chips. I recommend the halibut.
I had the 2 piece Halibut and my wife had the 2 piece Salmon (Wild) and well as the Calamari to share. We were totally amazed as we broke of a piece of the fish to eat and actually watched the oil gush out as we pressed the batter. Both fish samples were the same. The Calamari had a different oil base not easily gotten rid of as it managed to coat the roof of our mouths much like a paraffin wax would.
We tried to save the $42. dollar dinner by removing all the batter and just eating the fish sans batter.
Oh the only lemon I saw in this dining experience was 1 slice which accompanied the Calamari which I can only assume was to cut the wax it left.
A total waste of money the experience was and left us both vowing that if we ever felt like a fish dinner we buy fresh and cook at home as the above experience made us feel cheated and basically unwell with the oil content clearly visible.
Not the worst. But gotta say still more bad. SO GREASY. Fun atmosphere but rude staff.
when asking to get my friends and mine order bagged to take home we received THE dirtiest look I've seen from a waitress in a long time. The one other time I've gone here I was just ignored. Portions are fair however.
I've been eating fish and chips at Cockney kings for a long time, 10 or more years. No complaints about the food. It's awsome. If i am taking out, i usually call in my order so i don't have to wait. This has really annoyed me in my last few visits. When i go to pick up the food, shouldn't the order be already cooked? Instead i pay for the order and then they cook it. What's the point of me calling in my order? Why do they even take phone orders? I just end up waiting anyways.
The girl at the counter was totally clueless and had no customer service skills whatsoever. My order was ready and sitting on the counter and nobody even told me the order was ready or anything. Looks like all they care about is taking the order and collecting the money. Serving you the product is not very important as long as they have your cash.
I find the service is better and more professional at the Hastings location. Cheers to you guys.
been here a couple of times, different each time. i have found it's better to wait till it's not so busy.. not busy food was great always buy halibut and chips... when it's busy they don't let the fish stand after it comes out of the fryer, so the oil can drain they just put it on the chips and wrap it up end result. too greasy.
I go to this restaurant almost all the time and I have to say that this place served the WORST today. I went there (I was alone), sat down on chair and ready to take my order. However, there were two young female servers who were about high school girls, igonored my table and keep chatting with other employees. I was keep sitting on chair and looking at them but they just ignored me. One of them was serving customer who came 10 minutes after I came in and the other one was just talking with other employees and served other customers who came 20 minutes after I came in and sat down on chair. This is NOT fair because I came in first and ready to take order but those young female servers didnot even make an eye contact to me and kept helping other customers. I have to say that their service was very horrible. In fact, I used to go this restaurant many times, when I had very great female server who served better but this was the first time today where I got igonored by different young female servers. I'm not saying bad about them, but what im trying to say is that please be respect other person espeically to the customers whose waiting to take order WITHOUT ingore them.
They say, "you get what you paid for", so anyone expecting a superb meal should not bother. The fish is alright. I can't really taste the difference but I've gone back to Cockney Kings a few times with a couple of friends. I've had mixed service. Usually the servers are friendly and attentive to your needs. They will come and tell you that the kitchen is about to shut down so you can make your last orders.
My worst experience there was the last time I was there (maybe a month ago). I went with a party of 5 as usual, and we made our orders. It was 7pm when we got our food. Since the boys were hungry, they chowed down the fish and chips within ten minutes. Our server never came to check up on us until 7:30 even though we had tried to get her attention. We asked for more fish and she said that the kitchen had shut down already. When we told her that nobody told us that the kitchen was shutting down, she gave attitude and told us that we should know they shut the fryer down at 7:30. Another server came to our table and told us they would give us another order and apologized for our original server. We weren't rude about wanting more fish, but we were a little annoyed at her responses. Overall, it's a decent place to get your fix for F&C. Service is kind of 50/50, but it's not terrible to the point where I wouldn't want to go again.
Mrs. C and I were with a group of friends and we decided on this place because it seemed like a happy medium between all the possible choices out there. The restaurant itself was clean enough, including the w/c, but the dining room was rather crappy and needed an upgrade for 21st century diners.
They had a lot of choices and we all got different f&c combos, but since I can't taste the difference I got cod and chips. Mrs. C had prawns and chips because they were on special. We also shared some decent onion rings. I found my food to be about what I expected, as did the rest of our group. Nothing wild, but nothing weird either. I was sorry to hear about the experiences of previous reviewers (and we might have gone to a different place if I had read the reviews below), but the food was fine for what is was.
I did have a bone to pick with the tattooed server (I point this body art out for identification purposes only) who told us she could not be bothered to adjust the blinds so half the people at our table could avoid losing their eyesight. That rankled. I did not want to invade the personal space of a fellow diner at a nearby table in order to make the adjustment. Luckily action girl E was eating with us and she did the job with tact and efficiency.
All in all an unspectacular experience I am not anxious to repeat. I recommend the Hastings Street location or the popular newspaper-wrapped takeout option instead.
Went here for lunch on a Wednesday and got the special all you can eat. Great deal for $9.50 plus tax I got all you can eat fish and chips that comes with bottomless pop.
Fish is decent quality but you cant argue with the value here. I will definetely return next time i am craving some all u can eat fish and chips
I guess I'm not as picky as the other "connesieurs" on this site, but dammit all if this isn't one of the best deals to be had in town!!
What kind of fish is it?? Who cares!!!
It's bloody tasty,it comes with bottomless pop and you have a choice of whether you want more fries or not!!
The rest of the menu is tasty too..If you want oceanwise, hand fed fish, this isnt for you.
But you want to stuff your face for cheap, here is your place.
I started out with Cockney Kings on East Hastings in Burnaby, many years ago. Many moves later, the New Westminster outlet is the closest for a fish and chips "fix".
We go there every three or four weeks. Always, the service is friendly, the food is fresh and hot. The fish (halibut or cod) is never "fishy"...I think they are particular about their sources. We often add prawns to the meal, and they are always fresh, sweet and a good size.
This is one of our regular 'best' places...this time for fish and chips.
We went for the all-you-can-eat cod special and it wasn't bad. The batter on the outside is a little greasy and after the first piece, I had to start taking the batter off and just eating the fish which was ok. Fries were ok as well though a little soggy for my liking but what else would you expect for all-you-can-eat?
A server working there was really rude - we asked for more pop and she threw us a dirty look and said she'd have to get our server. Sorry for existing lady... By the end of the meal, I was going to give this place 3 stars overall but while eating a fry off her bf's plate, my friend found a long brown hair in her mouth (it actually became looped onto her tongue ring!). She has blonde hair and I have black hair and the two bf's with us had black hair so there was no way it was ours. We told the server right and away and did not make a big deal out of it and just wanted to leave immediately. The bumbling server just didn't know what to do. We didn't ask for a free meal or a discount, but a sincere apology would've been nice. She muttered she was sorry and we just asked for the bill. Once it came back, she told us we should have told her about the hair as soon as we found and shouldn't have left it until the end of the meal. What the heck??? We did tell her right away! Don't blame us for your bad food skills! And we didn't even ask for anything! We just quickly paid and left. Will never go back even if life depended on it...
How do they manage to do all you can eat for $8.95 with cold drinks and make a profit? Fish was okay but then again I never met a deep fried fish I didn't like. Liked it so much I had 4 pieces. Down from 5 when I was younger and didn't have cholesterol problems. Service was outstanding. No frills kind of place in a strip mall but if you want fish and chips be sure to try it here. All ypou can eat on Mon, Tues, and Wed.
I have to disagree with the last review. I came here expecting some good fish and chips. What's great about this place is that it's all-you-can-eat a few days of the week for only $9 and it includes a drink!!
The food, I had to say was not good. My fish were really greasy to the point where it was almost dripping. Looked like a wet sock and had texture of what I think wet socks would taste like. I left this place not wanting to eat fish and chips for a very long time.
Was craving F&C, and decided to pay Cockney Kings a visit.
The restaurant looks kind of like a cafeteria and does a swift takeout business, with a large dining area for eat-in patrons like myself. They have AYCE F&C Monday-Wednesday, which is awesome value.
The food was delicious while we were dining. I had cod and my partner had halibut. Service was fast, efficient, and friendly.
Problems came a little later when we were both up all night with food poisoning. Either the fish wasn't held at the right temperature, or it wasn't cooked all the way through. Either way, I had to take time off work to recover and will therefore never return.
Six of us went for the all you can eat Fish and Chips for dinner tonight. Asked for crispy fries, and they came crispy. The batter for the fish was really, really good, but only ate one piece with the batter, and took off the batter for the other two pieces. Very good!! Great service. Refilled pop with no problem. Waitress had a smile on her face all the time!
