Okonomi Sushi has 2 locations in New Westminster offering a varied menu of Japanese cuisine.
My husband & I live across the street from this restaurant and over the past couple months we would hear construction sounds at the restaurant in the late evenings. We wondered what was going on and today we discovered the new and improved "Okonomi".
We stopped eating there years ago because service was very poor (long wait time for order) and food quality was barely enjoyable.
We have at eaten at several different sushi restaurants in the Lower Mainland and this restaurant & location has gone from being one of our most disappointing experiences to one of our most pleasantly surprising!
Tonight we selected item 79. BENTO BOX B, 152. PORK KATSU, and 20. MAPLE ROLL (which is offered spicy, but we asked for unspicy).
We decide if a sushi restaurant is good based on the quality and presentation of its raw fish. The fish in the 'complete meal' and roll was so creamy and fresh. Rice portion used to be almost grotesquely out of proportion to the rest of the food at this restaurant, but instead it was neat & tidy in its place - there to support the other items, not be the star attraction.
And putting up with the sound of a saw at 10 o'clock at night was so worth being able to sit at one of the elegant & private booths that replaced the once school cafeteria style tables.
This is my new favorite sushi place. I used to frequent Ki Sushi but after discovering this gem in New West it is my go to sushi place. Sushi made with care and creativity. Absolutely beautiful is the only way to describe some of their rolls here. My favorite is the spicey tuna roll. Delicious with not too much rice and a nice healthy portion of tuna for under 6 bucks. They also have some creative choices like their Vancouver roll, huge and some of their other rolls made with colorful rice.
My dining partner usually orders one of the dinner boxes and I must say they are big enough for two. A huge portion of food with fantastic tempura. The oil they use must be clean as a whistle because the tempura is always crisp and delicious, not oily or soggy.
There are some nice touches here at Okonomi like complimentary edamame beans and two frozen grapes that come with your bill. Speaking of the bill, very affordable. Outstanding value for the food you receive.
My only gripe about Okonomi is that sometimes the servers, although very pleasant and friendly, can get a little forgetful not remembering things like requests for a tea fill up. They also seem to be under staffed at times with one server trying to cover the entire restaurant.
I have gone to both Okonomi locations. This is by far my favorite location as it is a newer space unlike their upstairs location off of Columbia. The Columbia building is very old and smells like it inside.
If you are a sushi lover I believe you will be impressed with Okonomi.
We saw the sign, 30% off on daily specials many times and decided to check it out. Daily specials for that day were Stanley Park roll and grilled scallop. We also ordered a few items from the menu. The rolls were big and delicious. The sushi rice is pink because they use combination of beet, red cabbage and blue berry juice to sweeten the rice instead of sugar. We are happy with both the food and the service. It was during the week so the restaurant was not too busy and the server was quite nice and informative. We are looking forward to try some of the unique Okonomi specials again.
I love the quality of the food and service there! Very friendly and welcoming! The prices there are a lot better then some sushi places so I'm happy about that! :D Diffidently one of my favorite places to eat at! :D totally recommend this place to all my friends and family!
