Hole in the wall Japanese place with the freshest sushi in New West.
I have been a patron of this establishment since they opened. The owner has always been very friendly and accommodating. The sushi is tasty and fresh and I have been surprised from time to time, with little extras in my order, such as extra miso soup, a can of pop. My favourites are his spicy scallop roll and spicy salmon roll absolutely delish and I love the extra scallop and salmon mixture he puts on the top, just can't get enough. The rolls are quite a bit larger than most sushi restaurants, but to me that means better value. I also appreciate the extra veggies in the rolls as it makes me feel like I'm eating healthier. I don't however like the carrots, but I just let him know I don't want any and he's happy to accommodate. I organize the hot lunch @ my children's school and last year we added a sushi day to the rotation. The children and teacher's have enjoyed the sushi so much that now it's a regular in the rotation.
This place is very small but that is very comfortable place.
Recently, they started 2 for 1 deal, so we were decide to try it.
As a usal, it was very good.
We can eat 2 Teriyaki meal for just 1 dish price
and we can oder chiken and beef teriyaki both.
It so good.
There are also many other menu like verious rolls and tempuras.
We enjoy and saitsfied this fantastic lowest price and very delicious foods
Strongly recomend this 2 for 1 deal, but you can get just on Wednsday
Have a enjoy Asuka's 2 for 1 deal
We decided to go back and see how things were going here.I guess they were losing money on the all you can eat setup.
Although still available, things have changed. No more unlimited sashimi,.tempura had become thick and dough-y,and rolls were largely made with filler ingredients.
So,on a whole,while not terribly disgusting,it was a tad dissapointing.
IF in new west, check it out,but expect usual run of the mill sushi.
Bad location, great food, thanks to the other reviewers who pointed me to this place.
I had high expectations for this place, but at least for the AYCE the fish isn't the freshest, it's still good but not amazingly fresh. Tokachi in Surrey still is my favorite place for the freshest fish I've ever tasted in BC.
They may just save the freshest fish for their special rolls and not for the AYCE which is fair enough. They have awesome creative rolls but we didn't get a chance to try those, other patrons were ordering off the menu more than going for the AYCE as well.
All prices are reasonable here and they have good daily specials.
I didn't really like the miso soup here, it was too salty and didn't come with mini-cubes of tofu.
The salad's here are beautiful in fact their food presentation for all dishes is a strong point.
There was a few slices of strawberry, matchstick cucumbers, slices of red delicious apple and some greens.
For the AYCE the sunomono is huge and was piled with ample baby shrimp as well as the same garnishes as the green salad. In fact I usually order 2 or more sunomono at AYCE and I could barely finish the one here.
There is a decent selection on their AYCE, if there's something not on there that you might like, suggest it to the server and they may include it, this was a nice point of going to a small restaurant.
The rolls are almost like nigiri here for the AYCE as they are ordered by piece vs by a whole roll and they are overstuffed with rice so don't order too many.
There's no limit on the sashimi and I liked that it's cut smaller but not too small.
The spicy terriyaki chicken was tasty.
My favorite thing here was their tempura, it was delicious and light. They offer a great selection for tempura including zucchinni, red snapper, salmon, shrimp, squid etc. Usually I stay away from fried foods but it was so tasty here.
At around $20 per person for the AYCE it was a good value and as it's a smaller restaurant it was nice to have AYCE in a less busy & relaxed location. Their staff is friendly and they are generous as when we asked for the bill they looked confused and asked if we wanted to order more food.
At the beginning I wasn't very wowed by the food because while the salad and sunomono were beautifully presented their taste wasn't spectacular but average. However overall everything tasted good and by the end of the meal we were satisfied and will definately be returning.
Highly recommended as there is just something unique about this place.
If you are in the area I recommend the SPCA thrift store just up the street from it as well, there are always amazing finds there and there's a resident friendly cat who allows anyone to pet her.
Went here with a friend and was pleasantly surprised. The location was a bit hard to find but once found it was well worth the trip. The restaurant is quite small but the food is excellent. The quality and freshness is second to none. I was very impressed with their tempura dishes. We ordered the tempura prawns, squid and yam The dishes were made to order. Prompt and well made. The presentation was as good as it tasted. The sushi was large, bigger than the average sushi restaurant and very fresh. You can taste the difference from other so call sushi restaurant. I am so happy that I had the opportunity to experience this culinary sensation. Highly recommend to sushi lovers who want to taste what sushi should really taste.
This was my first AYCE outing to Asuka, I've ordered take out before and I've dined in but not AYCE.
I was yet again impressed with the presentation, even though most places don't care much about presentation when patrons come in for all you can eat. This time I took a business client for lunch.... He is a huge sushi fan so I kept on telling him that he'd love the place.
We came in and to my surprise the place was empty, my client remarked that it may be not the best food since there isn't anyonyone there, I told him to hold any comments until food arrives... He commented about the top 40s type tunes that were playing ( and I had to agree it would have been better if the music was a bit more...... Japanese) would make for a more realistic atmosphere..
Food arrives and my client is just speachles about the fantastic presentation - his sunomono looked like one of those perfect looking but fake dishes in advertisments, he was blown away. He tried the food and was very surprised at how fresh and good it tasted.
Bottom line- I got more business from the client AND we've made plans to do this in a couple of weeks again, he pointed out that the place is a diamond in the rough and that he'll be bringing some of his friends there.
So will I!!!!!!!
It's some of the best I ever had!!
I love sushi. A lot of sushi. Real sushi. I use the chopped scallop as a test for every sushi place I go to.
I have had take-out from Asuka about ten times. I find it is ok food, but nothing too special. The sunomono salad was by far the best I have ever had though.
I find the prices a bit high, but I can understand it's hard to run a business with fresh food and keep the prices low in this economy.
There are better, and cheaper places in New West, but Asuka is definately worth a try.
I've yet to try their "all you can eat" menu.
My boyfriend and I went to try this place out for lunch as it is only 2 blocks from where he lives. At first I was a bit shocked at how much some of the rolls were compared to other places I've been. When the food came though it all made sense. Not only was there a huge amount of food (8 pieces per roll and thicker rolls than most places), but it was by far the freshest, and most real tasting sushi I have ever had. I also had a yam tempura which was fantastic. The service was good, very polite. The place didn't seem big on trying to look fancy, but there were some nice decorations and it was very bright and cheery. Definitely recommend this place to anyone who's looking for a good deal on fantastic food.
The restaurant has very tasty sushi, at reasonable prices, and very generous portions. Currently the restaurant is undergoing renovations, so hopefully when this is done it will be improved. Before the renovations, it was very plainly decorated, and was best suited for take-out. If you eat in, the staff is very friendly, and there is plenty of free tea. I have been back many times since discovering this restaurant on this website, and look forward to seeing its decor improved after its renovations.
I finally took a trip & a friend over to 12th St to try Asuka out, it's well-worth the trip from anywhere in the Tri-Cities. I eat alot of sushi, a fair bit of all Japanese and my share of Korean so please trust me when I say this is simply good food.
They have the usual suspects (rolls, nigiri etc); all seemed very fresh and very well-priced. They have some nice combo's listed, as well as some interesting features- I had the 'Red Dragon (or something like that) which was red snapper in a light tempura... delicious. A very gracious older gentleman brought our food to our table, bowing all the way. The staff we met were Korean, and offer some nice spicy flair to the traditional menu items. The gyoza were the best I've had, vegetarian.
Order your meal and enjoy:
Green tea: FREE- brewed & waiting for you
Miso Soup: FREE- same. woot!
Atmosphere- nada really. Clean, sparse, a few tables. Not really a 'date place' but definitely a place to enjoy with people when it's all about the food. Can't wait to bring more friends to this place!
I went to Asuka sushi because it was the closest Japanese restaurant from my place, but it turned out to be a great surprise!
The restaurant is very small and far from fancy, but you can get good sushi for great price. They have $4.99 lunch special which is one of the best I've seen in Vancouver for volume and taste. They also have great tempra and salmon teriyaki and Bento.
We just went there as a 5 people group for lunch today. We had Sushi/Tempra/Chicken Teriyaki that we couldn't finish for $10 per person. Where else you can get that kind of deal these days? Besides they have very creative fusion sushi that you enjoy trying out and finding your favorites.
It might not be the best sushi out there, but if you consider overall value including price and services, it is definitely on my top 5 list.
The chef/staff is very friendly, but again they don't have many seats and a server. So it is not a great place if you are looking for a nice atomosphere and enjoy the dining experience. However, they have delivery service and welcome take aways. If you are having a party/guests at home, it's a great place to order from. They are very consistent for taste, volume and services. You will be very satisfied for the food you get, and how little you pay. You don't feel like going back to those overpriced sushi restaurants all over Vancouver anymore!
This little place has opened up in one of the worst restaurant locations imaginable - the 700 block of 12th Street in New West. Restaurants around there faster than the seasons. Yet, this place may prove the adage "location, location, location" wrong. Some of the best sushi I've ever had (and that's saying something). Very fresh and innovative. Their house roll is an amazing feat of culinary architecture that I almost didn't want to eat. All the food there is top quality and the man who runs the place is very friendly, though still struggling with conversational English. Well worth the trip into the 'hood'.
