Could be great. Prices are high. Too many times to many items out of stock. Menu limited. What type of
Italian restaurant dose not have spagetti and meat balls or breads.

early in the night the place runs out of menu dishes and specials are carried over and not fresh daily. Needs a new owner or manage, business can't survive on over priced small frozen crust pizza alone

An exotic gem in Downtown

Aladdin's in one of those little hole-in-the-wall kind of restaurants that you get enamoured with once you try its food...and want no one else to know about. But unfortunately lots of people know about it now, as it was packed when I returned. I remember first coming here without truly planning to, being lured in by the exotic look and decor, not to mention the music coming out from the store (Lebanese and Greek as described). But to be honest, it took the food to really win me over. Everything on the menu is great and tastes freshly made, be it the tzatziki, falafel wrap or lamb souvlaki. And the baklava! Just thinking about this food makes my mouth water.

Not good value for the money!

Honestly, I am not really a fan of "fast-food" restaurants. I am more of a slow-food eater, so obviously coming here was out of my comfort zone. But given that the website looked good, and the fact that it has many locations and looks reputable, I took the risk (How bad could Boston Pizza be?).

We came in for lunch and the first red flag was that the place seemed pretty empty. The fact that no one acknowledged us should have given us a hint. For the ridiculous prices that they were charging, the food was no good. I don't know whether it was the shrimp or the chicken but I had to send back the jambalaya fettuccini ($19). And I couldnt finish the market salad either. It definitely did not taste fresh and their was something off. Maybe I should have gone for something more simple like a pizza?

Looking for good sushi in Nanaimo? Try Nori

I've been coming to Nori for a while now, almost every time I can when I am in Nanaimo. Just to tell you how good and addicting it can be, on my most recent visit I came here twice. Might not seem like a lot but for someone who likes to try new places and eat different things every day, it is a lot. NOTE: I am no longer in Nanaimo but I thought I should review this place because it is really very good.

Nori is one of those places where you don't mind paying a lot because you feel that 'every penny is worth it'. From the moment you step in, you are treated very nicely. Warm greeting from the staff that is not the least bit flustered or worried about anyone but you, even with the amount of people here. The restaurant gets extremely busy most time, especially after 5, so it is best to make a reservation before coming. You still have to wait, but at least you are secured that you will have a table.

What I think draws all the crowd is that the quality and taste is guaranteed. The sushi is fresh. I know this because it is made in front of you. If you come here for lunch, the bento box is the way to go. Otherwise, there is a large variety to choose from. My absolute favorite is their beef teriyaki roll, unagi roll, toro sashimi.

Great This Hole-In-The-Wall Restaurant

All I must say after eating here is that looks are really deceiving! I tried my hand in this mexican hole-in-the-wall for the first time and actually liked it. The place is quite unassuming but that is in no way conductive of the quality or taste of the food. I had a quick lunch here and really liked what I ordered (salad and California roll-up). They have a place outside you can sit and enjoy your food, but from the looks of it, most people just come and order take-out. The only thing I see as a problem here are that the prices are a little expensive.

No Reviews Should Have Told Me Something?

Whilst visiting my sister in Nanaimo, I went to Modern Cafe. It is not the first time I come visit, so I am a bit familiar with the place and the places "to go". For me, Modern Cafe was one. I have come here before, not too many times though, once for lunch and only recently for dinner. I decided to go again and but have such a nice experience like the previous times...

Modern Cafe was house full when we arrived, so we had some trouble finding a table. After some waiting, we got a seat in the patio. It was nice outside, so we had no problem. Our waitress was attentive at first, but then disappeared once she took our order. "Did she forget us?" was the thing that came to our mind when 30 minutes passed and no sign of her our our drinks. I actually had to go inside and remind her. I don't know if she did it on purpose or because I told her we were not really hungry and didn't want to order much?

My burger tasted weird, and it was definitely not fresh. The prawn linguine was okay according to my sister and the mac and cheese we shared was not good. For items that are over $12, I expected more and better service. Basically, a disappointing dinner meal with subpar food.

I used to go thru drive thru because they constantly got my order wrong unless it was just coffee I start going in to order. Today was the last straw. Put my order in waited 10minutes and seen 3 orders go out that were ordered after me before I got mine. I finally get my order and its cold & no hash browns. Then I'm informed there is no hash browns hasn't been for 20 minutes. Get it together its the breakfast menu. Was asked 32 times if I wanted a muffin instead - oh is a muffin $3.87. Then they can't give me a refund just for the hash browns they have to re-ring order with out - how hot is my food now?? I finally got fed up and told them to keep the money and left. Thru all the orders wrong not getting all the food ordered they probably owe me $20 now. You tell them and they think nothing of it. It cost more to drive back than the darn food. The one time I check and went in the argued with me. One nice experience was the girl that took my order. Very pleasant and none of this was here fault. If they didn't have hash browns then they should communicate this with all front end staff. I felt bad for here when trying to refund part of my order it'd shouldn't be that hard. Also the manager should of just gave me my refund and dealt with how to ring it in later. POOR - POOR. This may sound petty but after working in this industry I don't have patience for this kind of service. Thank you for the front end service it was excellent just wish the whole experience could be that way.

Re-Review - needs some tweaking with process - Not a good choice for a special dinner
By lindarose of Vancouver (172 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, May 13, 2014 - 4:34pm [Dine in]

I made a reservation for this establishment for 7 for a special birthday dinner a month in advance via e-mail (and received a confirmation e-mail that my reservation was accepted).

Because I know that mistakes happen, I take the time to call the restaurant a couple of days ahead of time to make sure that everything is on track (note - I live in Vancouver - this call is long distance at my expense).

It's a good thing I called to confirm - the hostess did not have my reservation. I read her the e-mail confirmation sent by the restaurant that I should, indeed, have reservations for for the stated date and time for 7 and reminded that it was for a special birthday. The hostess gave some song and dance about the manager having a separate reservation book and that it probably hadn't been entered into the book at the front blah, blah, blah. Either this is a pathetic cock and bull story or the manager is an idiot. Who would have a separate reservation book in their office?? What if someone made a reservation for a specific table and there was a double entry?? Like I said, either it was a lame excuse for incompetence or a genuine description of incompetent management.

My party arrived at the place and were given menus.

The server was great in some ways - meh in others. She was patient with the older adults at the table (one of whom is a very fussy, finicky person - the server actually gave three (3) samples of wine to one of my party - finally she settled on a glass that she could tolerate). Here she was accommodating and patient.

This is where the good service ends.

The appetizers arrived in a reasonable amount of time. However, the mains took forever to get out. We had two young children in our party (ages 7 and 9). They were well behaved, but starting to verbalize their hunger. It was close to a 45 minute wait for our food.

The server did bring out a little bread when asked about the wait time. She brought out 4 half pieces. Um. There are SEVEN people in our party. Could the restaurant not have provided another 3 pieces of BREAD! Usually one is served bread as a standard when ordering entrees in an establishment. They brought out insufficient bread as an apology for poor service. Whatever.

Finally, the food comes out. They gave me the wrong salad. I pointed it out. The waitress (who was otherwise good) argued and told me that I had ordered the one that she delivered. I most certainly did not (I know this because I have a habit of pointing to my order in the menu to ensure that it is correctly communicated). Another member of my party (who usually stays pretty quiet) also said, "um, I heard her. She did not order the salad that you brought out." The waitress reluctantly took the salad back.

After a while, the correct salad was brought out.

The food was good. Nothing outstanding, but solid brewpub fare. I liked the fish tacos. One of my party found the steak a bit tough - so I wouldn't recommend it. The prices were all standard for mid end restaurants (the steak was $24 ish, the salmon was $24 ish, the burgers were $14 to $16 ish).

The waitress brought the bill - she stated that she gave me the (less expensive price) for the salad that they at first mistakingly brought out. A whole $2 off. Whoppee! For the amount of time it took the food to come out - I would have thought they would have given a couple of the appetizers gratis.

Oh - and no one said "Happy Birthday" to the birthday celebrant, offered a dessert or anything.

I would not bother with this place for any kind of special celebration. It is okay for a burger/beer - but nothing more than that.

Absolutely amazing breakfast treats. Made me a very welcome visitor to local Nainamo business...

OK so I'm from New Jersey in the USA. I've eaten breakfast at Bocca a couple of times during my yearly business trips to Vancouver Island. Always been memorable in a nice way. When my next trip called for an early morning technical sales meeting in Nanaimo, I was excited to be able to order a couple of dozen tasty morning treats for the meeting.
I was going to pick up, but hey they deliver! So, I was able to fly in, meet the most attractive delivery person I have ever met at the customer’s front door, right on time! Arms brimming with two trays of sweet and yummy goodness plus tray of gluten free healthy treats, we arrived like family bringing Thanksgiving dinner to a ravenous crowd.
Before the meeting started, we got down to business. Peeling back the nicely arranged platters there were oohs and awes galore. Some present were not aware of Bocca so I was happy to be making its introduction from a guy living over 3,000 miles away.
Anyway, the meetings were a big success and I got a million dollar order as a result! (OK, that order part I made up). All I can say is, go, buy food, enjoy, repeat.
Fred says four Stars! Incredible.

I have never eat before at Little Georges and decided to give it a go. Yesterday we were watching Monday night football and decided to try it out. We ordered 3 pizza that came to close to $60. We order two specialty pizza and one normal one. Its was completely burned and tasted awful. What a waste of money. It was like cardboard.
Never order there again. I cant stand it when a greek place trys to pretend it knows what pizza is all about. They ruin the experience of what real pizza actually is. Rather go to the grocery store and get frozen pizza.

The food is pretty good but extremely expensive. The service is horrible. All my friends that used to rave about this place are now no longer going. Maybe its a change of manager or the place is feeling too comfortable.
The tempura is very unique and tasty, but small portions at $12 is way overpriced. Its took us two hours just to have lunch because the sushi chef kept leaving his station to either smoke or go to the bathroom. When I got up and talk to the bald headed sushi chef he said he was one of the manager. I said why is it taking so long and he said very arrogant and didn't even respond. Four people without alcohol was $90 for lunch.
Go to Sushi Nori is much better.

Great location, horrible food and owner
By Foodcriticbc of vancouver (42 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, October 27, 2013 - 4:25pm [Dine in]

I was there a few months ago and thought maybe my experience was unique. I talked to many people and they all agreed with me. The owner Penny doesn't respect any of her clients. She has her dog in the restaurant and when you mention to the servers they don't seem to care.
I decided to give this place a try since I read a lot of good reviews. The location is great right on the water. I decided to try there so called famous fish tacos. My friends also had the fish tacos and we all said the same thing the fish was cold and it had a bad fish smell. I couldn't even finished it and when I mentioned it to the waitress the so called owner Penny came by. She was rude and said tough that's how we serve it and the halibut was fresh. Once of my friends works in the fisheries and said there is no way that fish was fresh. I soon found out they were closing in the next few weeks for the seasons so odds are they were trying to clear out the stock rather than throw it out.
They place is full of fruit flys (since its outside), dog was eating in the restaurant and it is quite dirty and run down. To top it off the owner who is close to 70 must be losing her marbles.
If you want to be treated badly, eat bad food and pay a lot for it then maybe you should check this place out. Other than that I would go to Ginas better quality food and good service.

Crappy Food and Insulted my Twin 4 year old Boys!!!
By JoyWith2 of Nanaimo, BC (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, August 26, 2013 - 12:19am [Dine in]

Went for dinner with my husband twin 4 year old twin boys and my parents.

My father's piece of fish was so skinny there was almost no meat in the batter,

waitress argued with us that it was long enough. Then my mother asked for

more sauce as there was almost nothing on the burger, and a bowlful of lettuce

in the burger instead. She kind of argued with us about that but brought more

sauce. I have always been involved in customer service and where is the

motto "The customer is always right?" My husbands burger was lousy. I

shared my meal with my one son which was chicken fingers and fries. The

chicken fingers were just the frozen type, nothing to write home about. Any

time we tried to talk to the waitress to any of this, there was an attitude of "I'm

right and your wrong". Then at the end she comes up to one of my twin sons

and gives him a toy and freezy and nothing for the other boy. When I

questioned why she would bring something for one and not the other she

replied "oh, we have to charge extra then". My other son has a special diet and

I always bring his supper with us and every other restaurant has never brought

one toy or treat for one boy and not the other. I would never treat two children

like that. What's the kicker I didn't even order a kids meal for either of them,

just meals for the adults and shared with the other boy.

Bring a Friend For Lunch
By Mike Millington of Nanaimo, B.C. (1 Review)
Submitted Monday, August 19, 2013 - 4:31pm [Dine in]

This is one of my favourite places to bring dates and business clients for lunch. Today my friend and former co-worker Gail and I made an impromptu decision to have lunch together and have it at Alexandra's. I have been there many times and still have not tried everything on the menu. The service is always so friendly and accommodating and today was no different. We both had Chicken Marsala except I had mine with pasta while Gail had hers with a Caesar Salad.

I am always impressed with the quality and consistency of the food there. It's really quite good for a lunch price of about $10. I have had similar dishes in other more expensive restaurants for more than twice the price, which is why I give this restaurant a 5 for value.

If you are passing through town and it's lunch time, its definitely worth your while to stop by this place.

Unfortunate High Tea
By Quality Bites of Nanaimo, B.C. (1 Review)
Submitted Saturday, June 8, 2013 - 10:08pm [Dine in]

Today my family and I decided to treat my niece for a high tea for her birthday. We arrived very eager and excited about the experience. We waited to be seated and were given menus and instructed by the server to pick our preferred flavour of scones and 3 types of bars. Beware as there is no gluten free options other than a side salad on the menu. The sandwiches were dry, poorly cut and had very messy fillings. The bread is whole wheat only, no options permitted. When asked about this, the server stated the owner wants it to be healthy. If your serving a layered sandwich of cream cheese and cucumber with egg salad underneath how is that worrying about nutritional value! The bread was massacred and dry, although the server said they were just finished being prepared. More like just being cut up! The silver service was tarnished and a paper napkin was used to handle the scalding tea pot that we had to pour ourselves The assortment of squares were not fresh baked, but stale box treats. The cost was horrid for the lack of quality and flavour. It cost 44 dollars for three people for tea. We were not checked back on for more than a half hour, we were ignored and had to get up to go ask for our bill. The whole time other customers had come in for tea and were served from start to finish. This is not a pleasant place to have tea, and this is coming from a tea lover. Save your money as you would be better off going through Tim Hortons drive through!

Good for Intergenerational Lunch
By lindarose of Vancouver (172 Reviews)
Submitted Monday, May 13, 2013 - 6:33pm [Dine in]

Went for lunch on Mothers Day. There with in-laws (in mid to late 70s), hubby, sister-in-law and I (40s) and our kids (age 6 and 8).

The restaurant is very clean with spacious layout. There was a rose in a short bud vase on each table. Pretty.

The waitress was very, very good. She interacted well with the children and was patient and helpful with my in laws (who sometimes have difficulty expressing their needs). She was highly professional throughout the meal (changing our tablecloth when someone spilled water and patient when my husband and sister-in-law were discussing how to split the bill).

The food was good. It was attractively plated. Ample portions and fit the description on the menu. There were no surprises. I had the lamb skewer. It was cooked perfectly and the skewer was removed for easy eating. The rice was pleasant and the greek salad tasty. It came with al dente vegetables. My daughters kids menu pizza was well done. It certainly wasn't a frozen product, but good quality. My son's salmon was cooked perfectly and his vegetables were all eaten. My husbands shrimp pasta was loaded with plump shrimp. My in-laws burgers were tasty, with a nice bun and well presented. The burgers came with a choice of fries, salad or a little of both.

The prices reflected the quality.

Again, there were no surprises. There was something for everyone. It was a comfortable room. It wasn't cutting edge, artisan or a place for a foodie destination, but a comfortable room and tasty meal to enjoy with family.
