porky's

Submitted Tuesday, October 27, 2009 - 1:18pm [Dine in]

I was with a colleague and we wanted a nice lunch in Hooterville (aka Maple Ridge). This place was supposed to be pulled pork paradise, so in we scampered get some porcine lunch action. The restaurant is not large but it was nicely decorated and very clean, including the w/c. Service was terrific, and the staff made recommendations about which meals were on the must have list. I went with a pulled pork sandwich on ciabatta bread with coleslaw. I declined the included side of beans. My colleague was persuaded to try the lasagne. Both were excellent, and the portion sizes were big. As for value, the meals were quite cheap, and we both feasted for about 20 bucks including drinks. A definite go-to place for the pork lovers out there, although I hear great things about the schnitzel burger...

Recommended.

dinner out
By jd7878 of Tri Cities (1 Review)
Submitted Saturday, November 17, 2012 - 9:10pm [Dine in]

went to dinner here with family, 6 adults (one elderly in a wheel chair), 2 kids,
arrived at 530pm, told it would be about a half hour wait, actually seated at 611pm.
found out while waiting that a xmas party was going on at the same time as reg customers where coming in, the party took up a little under 3/4 of teh venue, and we got seated in teh same room as teh xmas party, literally right beside them.
ordered around same time as seated, as we where told that if we ordered now it would only take about 25min to get dinner order to us, DID NOT GET DINNER UNTIL 720PM.

offered/took free appys, which took about 40min to show and ended up getting charged for them anyways, not enough staff, very noisy, when dinner showed up, asked for no mushrooms on burger, got mushrooms no onions.
they ran out of roast potatos, not told until well after order placed.
one person took mashed potatos with gravy on side, another rice, both got mash wish gravy on.

this all being said, the food , when it showed up correctly, was hot and did taste very good, the servers where very polite/apologetic, i would go again but call ahead.
if you call and they say they have a large party booked, dont go.

summary:
showed at restaurant at 530pm, seated 611pm, food {good thing we ordered appys} didnt start showing till nearly 7pm, main order didnt show till720pm.
ordered appys we where told would be free due to wait, got charged for them in the end.
they ran out of product, not enough staff, way to busy to handle both the xmas party and reg customers

Absolutely Outstanding Bistro in Maple Ridge!
By priggly of Coquitlam (73 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, July 30, 2010 - 8:51pm [Dine in]

After reading numerous positive reviews of this restaurant over the past few months I was desirous of dining here.

I dined here on 29 July 2010 and had the garden salad, the pulled pork sandwich and the Philly cheese steak sandwich. The quality of all three items was outstanding. I have eaten pulled pork all over North America and the pulled pork sandwich at Roast Bistro easily compared to the best of them. The cole slaw was spicy, tasty and very, very good, so good, in fact, that I had three helpings! The Philly cheese steak was well seasoned, tasty and overall wonderful.

Additionally, as if the quality of the food were not enough, the service was very attentive, competent and genuinely involved. I got the impression that the server was GENUINELY interested in whether or not I was enjoying the dishes prepared and served, which I was. This degree of genuineness is rare in the restaurant business and was highly appreciated by this diner. It was clear from the moment I walked in the door that the chef/owner and his assistants enjoyed what they were doing and had the strong desire to see it that their patrons were happy with both the fare and the service.

By co-incidence, I had just returned from a visit to the United States where I had the opportunity to sample a number of BBQ establishments. I will tell you on no uncertain terms that the pulled pork sandwich at Roast Bistro was as good or better than the best that I ate south of the border. The chef and his employees are to be highly commended on the quality of the food at this establishment.

I am desirous of returning to Roast Bistro to sample more of their wonderful offerings. I strongly suggest you do the same.

We are fortunate indeed to have a restaurant of this caliber in the GVRD area.

A Great Meal!

I had out of province guests who wanted to go out for dinner and having been to the Roast Bistro a few times myself, I was quite sure this would be a good choice. There were 8 of us and the special happened to be roast beef. A few of our party ordered the special after the chef informed us the Yorkshire pudding was 2 minutes from being ready. What a treat! A large portion of delicious tender beef, potatoes, vegetables done to perfection and prompt friendly service made everyone very happy and even after we were back home and visiting my guests were commenting on the great meal they had. We even all agreed it was the best roast beef dinner ever enjoyed in a restaurant! Thank you to the Roast Bistro for making our guest's visit even more pleasant and memorable!

Roast Bistro is Maple Ridge's hidden gem

Roast Bistro is Maple Ridge's hidden gem. I was so impressed with the experience that I needed to write this review so others people can dine here and experience what good food is all about.

Food - The food was outstanding. Everytime we dine here, the food is consistantly excellent. They have specials throughout the week to cater to everyones taste. They do an excellent job of servicing top quality food everytime.

Service - The service has always been great. The staff cater to your every need and ensure you are satisfied with your meal. It is a pleasure to deal with all the staff at Roast Bistro.

Value - The value at this restaurant is amazing. Not only are the daily specials very reasonably priced, but the entire menu is also very affordable and fair. They have done a great job of ensuring that there is a great variety of food at very reasonable prices.

Ambiance - The restaurant is very modern and tasteful. We were very pleased with the layout and the fact that there is lots of room at each table. The overall setup of the restaurant is great and we love the fact that it is subdivided into two rooms.

Overall it was a great experience. We are happy to dine here and hope that restaurants like this continue to flourish because they deserve it. Way to go Roast Bistro, keep up the great job!

Lousy Lunch
By JanFebs of Fraser Valley, BC (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, May 1, 2012 - 12:58pm [Dine in]

Ok, I will start from the beginning..
My boyfriend was on here looking up reviews and saw that Roast Bistro had about a 4 out of 5, so he decided to take me there for lunch. When we walked in the restaurant it had about 4 tables dining.. the bistro is quite large so it looked very empty. The waitress said that it would take a couple mins to be seated.. ( the place was empty) SO we waited.. Finally we were seated in a cold corner by the washrooms!!!! Nice atmosphere right next to the toilets! We asked for another table, and were told we had to sit at that one.. again... the place was empty!! We had to ask the other waitress to be moved. When I started to look around I noticed the place was lacking warmth and decor!! The only pictures on the walls were of puppets and ventriloquists.. creepy!!! I ordered the Steak Caesar salad and my boyfriend had the beef dip.. both of our beef had a funny sour taste and smell..my salad was soaked and mushy.. his fries were okay!!
Our waitress hardly came around and didn't even ask us how our meals were!
I'm starting to think the owner is writing his own reviews on here!
WIll NEVER GO BACK!!
CHECK UR MEAT!

The steak that impressed the butcher!!!
By foodie_85 of maple ridge BC (1 Review)

As a former chef, now a butcher, I must say that the ribeye steak was out of this world!!! Tender, flavorful, juicy, perfectly seasoned... you name it, they nailed it. My only small criticism would be that the veggies were slightly under cook for my liking, but other than that, wonderful meal as always. I've eaten here many times before, and everything always meets or exceeds my expectations. They're pulled pork is second to none! especially with the "Tangy Mustard Sauce". The other sauces are very nice, but this one, I think, is the best.

The staff are very friendly and obliging to everyone, the ambiance is cute yet classy, and you really get your money's worth.

Excellent job Roast Bistro! Keep it up, you really are "The Spot" in Maple Ridge!

Not what we were expecting

We came here after reading great reviews on Dine here, 5 stars service, 5 stars food so on and so forth. It was so far from a five star dining experience that It makes me begin to question the authenticity of the reviews Let me begin my trip down food memory lane.It was a Tuesday evening night and the wife wanted to get some pasta. I was fairly new to the area and we decided to drive down Lougheed and see if there were any restaurants open. as we pass Dairy Queen we see an A board with a special for the evening of Pasta. So Roast Bistro it was!. We walk into the restaurant and it is extremely open and very cold I ran back to the car to get the better half's sweater. We were sat down in the middle of the restaurant and they had 3 or 4 tables. Shivering we were poured our water and given menu's. Besides the initial fill of our waters they were never to be refilled again... But we will revisit that a bit later. I order a pork cutlet served with gravy and onions. the wife had a Alfredo fettuccine. I had a beer (which I finished along with my water and was never refilled or asked to be) and she had a glass of wine (which was really bad in quality for a 5 star restaurant). My pork was extremely over cooked and the gravy tasted like it was from a powder over salted and very little beef flavor more like paper mache. The vegetables were a melody and cold while the roast potatoes were okay (a little dry but it happens). The Alfredo was the real deal breaker though. Over cooked noodle, which I can get over because I haven't found anywhere in the city that knows how to cook a peice of pasta. It was the peppers that were mushy and the sauce that was unseasoned and tasted like Hot whipping cream. No egg for creaminess no spices or herbs for flavor just boiled cream. Our bill was roughly 45 dollars I don't remember. The Value was their because we were full but the food and the service were just awful and because of those two things we will not be giving this small business any more of our money. We know what we like and what quality is and if a restaurant claims to be what they aren't it is just a slap in the face to me as a consumer when i found out the truth I wish these people the best but Roast Bistro needs to work on service and quality if they want to be a 4 star restaurant

My colleagues (over 65 of us) took over most of this place for a Christmas turkey lunch/dinner which turned out to be superb - large helpings of tender turkey, moist stuffing (the dense kind my mom makes, not the dry bread cubes from Stouffers) and creamy mashed potatoes with rich gravy. Not to mention proper tart whole cranberry sauce. Servers were quick and helpful and notably the management did not impose an auto-gratuity as most places do when dealing with large groups. The vegetarian options were apparently great too. We were charged $15 apiece, an excellent value in my books for the quality of food we received.

Bravo!

I have been to Roast 4 times, 3 times for lunch and my last time for dinner. Meals were always consistently decent nothing to complain about but nothing to write home to mom about either. All my lunch experiences have been sandwich related, decent sized sandwiches served with bagged fries and heinz ketchup, decent (not spectacular). I find the gravy a little goopey and the onions undercooked but other then that so far so good.. Service has been good, not fine dining service but what do you expect you are eating at a diner. The Ambiance is wide open and very cold. What this place has that keeps me coming back is that I will be full from a 15 dollar meal. The value for what you get is there, but what you have to realize is, you pay for what you get... at the ned of the day I know what I am getting when I go, it is constant and ok for a quick cheap bite.

Good Food Always. Comfortable environment. This is one of the few restaurants in Maple Ridge where you know you are going to get a great tasting meal every time. The recent renovation of this restaurant makes the space much more comfortable to sit in then previous.

There is a Vegetarian Burger available, it's not on the menu yet that i've seen, but it's good. It would be nice to see more vegetarian items on the menu. The open faced turkey sandwich is my other halves personal favorite, maybe it's the cranberry sauce that really sells it!

Good Overall Value! Happy to be a regular customer!

Submitted Thursday, July 1, 2010 - 8:35pm [Dine in]

So we recently discovered this gem in Maple Ridge. Here is a run down of what we have tried and our reviews of the dishes.

The Pulled Pork Sandwich is really really good! We like that the coleslaw is right in the sandwich and the bun is always fresh.
The Poutine is literally the best freakin thing ever! It is a must try!
The Steak Bites are a great starter.
The Ribeye is tender and juicy and the veggies super tasty.
The Chef's salad is packed with turkey, egg, bacon, cheese...well you get the idea.
The Philly Cheese Steak awesome!
The Pork Schnitzel dinner was good as well, the pork breading was light and NOT greasy at all the only thing I wanted to add was lemon and the staff were happy to bring some over :)
The Cheese Cake and Chocolate Cake are great as well.
As you can see it is a really great place to eat and you won't leave hungry or disappointed. The staff is friendly and the restaurant is very clean and has a nice feel to it. It is like eating a home cooked meal without having to prepare and clean up after. Oh and the prices are great! There is a special each night.

Enjoy!!

Lunch with sis...

Submitted Tuesday, January 26, 2010 - 7:35pm [Dine in]

Brought my sis here for lunch as the few times I have had dinner at this restaurant it has been exceptionaly good. Lunch did not disappoint. We got there a little early - 10 minutes before opening ( 11:00am) but were invited in and served our drinks until the special menu was printed and given to us. We chose from the specials - I had beef brisket dip and my sister had chicken pot pie. Both with sides of caeser salad. Even though it was just lunch - the food was as good as expected. Served by one of the owners who made sure we were happy and had drinks refils etc. Two other servers asked us also if all was well. The chicken pies were new to the menu and they wanted feedback. Don't expect fancy decor - plain and very clean. Don't expect fancy prices either there aren't any. I'd say 5 stars for the little restaurant that could.

Went there because of the Reviews. More than true--Magnificant food in
a small/restaurant.
Caesar ----was BRILLIANT ----and maybe the best myself or wife has ever
had.
She also had the Volcano Shrimp which a exceptionally tasty ---its the
sauce. I had Pulled Pork and Poutine both exceptional.
All one can say is the reason to eat there is the exceptional food every dish was stupendously tasty.
Its not a romantic dinner out but rather a dining expierence where the food is to Rave for.
Will have many nites of trying different menu items because everything
is sure to be worth trying.

What a gem to find in Maple Ridge. Its food that rivals anything
downtown Vancouver's got.
thanks

Takeout was Awesome

Well I went to the Roast Bistro today for some takeout. I ordered a BLT and one of the chef's lunch specials a chicken gyro. Well the food took about 10 minutes which was fast i thought, and the owner had served me himself. Well when I got home and opened my food the smell was terrific,I started in on my poutine and barely made it , I didn't think that i'd be able to eat my gyro. Then when I took a bite of the gyro it was soooo good I couldn't stop eating it, My wife had the same reaction. She had a side ceaser salad with hers and we are both in agreement. The Best ceaser Salad we've ever had.
This was the first time I Had takeout that good and for that price we will definitely both be repeat customers. Thankyou very much to the staff of Roast Bistro for making this a pleasurable dining experience.

I have never had food as good , the staff are very friendly, the atmosphere is very comfortable . Half the time the head chef serves me personally. Simply the best food in this town by far. I would expect this kind of quality in a resort destination or very high end part of the city. The chefs enjoy catering to specific tastes and dietary needs a customer might have. I eat there at least once a week( if not more often). I recomend this resteraunt to everyone

Have been here several times & have been warmly greeted by wait staff. Dean, the chef is very friendly and interested in his customers.
The place is not fancy, but clean and neat, with a homey touch. The breakfasts look FANTASTIC, although I admit I haven't tried one (yet!) Everything I have tried has been very good, and they will cheerily substitute menu items if you like.

A Wonderful Addition to the Maple Ridge Dining Scene!

Submitted Saturday, February 28, 2009 - 5:48pm [Dine in]

We stopped in for lunch at the Roast Bistro after seeing the "Pulled Pork" sign, and we were delighted with our experience.

This is a moderately sized restaurant, but much larger than it appears from the street. It's comfortable and clean. Service was prompt, friendly, and knowledgeable; in fact the owner served us.

The menu has many choices;( in fact I think that it could probably be edited a bit. But that's just my opinion.) I had the pulled pork sandwich, which was excellent. Well cooked pork, with lots of crunchy bits, gently mixed with tasty BBQ sauce was piled on a soft and fresh white bun, with some cool fresh coleslaw on top. I asked for 'light' BBQ sauce, next time I'll ask for more. There was a llittle pot of homemade baked beans on the side, and a huge pile of onion rings.

Hubby had a "Bistro Burger", a generous patty loaded with cheese, mushrooms and bacon, excellent sauce, and fresh lettuce, etc. His burger was accompanied by homemade french fries, some of the best that we've tasted since moving from Ontario.

This is that rare find in Maple Ridge, a small independent restaurant with an owner who is interested in serving actual home cooked food, prepared with care and thoughtfulness. Before we left he brought us a little tasting sample of the ribs that were slowly cooking for the evening service; covered with a fresh homemade dry rub, they were incredible. Had I not been stuffed full of pulled pork, I'd have been tempted to just park myself in my chair and wait for dinner.

We're going to be regulars at the Roast Bistro, I give it full marks.

Dine Here for great BBQ

I was recommended to check this place out, and boy was I not let down. I knew I was in for a treat the moment I saw the sign at the front of the entrance. All I remember about the sign were the words "Pulled Pork Sandwich" and I was like, "Done Deal".

I love pulled pork, and have tried out pulled pork sandwiches in various locations throughout the Lower Mainland and the Great Northwest (in the States). Not saying the others were bad, they were decent, but I found them either too dry most of the time, or impossible to taste through the amount of sauce on them.

At this place however, I was BLOWN AWAY. It was warm, the bun was toasty, and you could taste the pork, sauce, and coleslaw separately and enjoy the chemistry that each particular ingredient contributed. When the gracious owner and head chef of the place, Dean, stopped by to ask how things were, all I said, behind a fast disappearing sandwich and between bites was, "Less talking, more eating" with no offense to him of course. On the contrary, I was simply marveling at how amazing the sandwich was. The poutine was also very delicious, solid fries with a generous serving of cheese and gravy. Easily the first time I actually had no guilt about eating one. It was a good trade off for the workout the next day.

I noticed that the length of time to get the food was getting to me, maybe 10/15 min or so, probably because I was hungry, but when I got it, I had no complaints, I would've waited an hour for that quality of food. The service was also good, it is a small place and feels very comfortable.

Needless to say, my brother also ordered the same thing and was completely flabber-gasted as well. My other brother was a regular and recommended the joint in the first place, he was very content with his roast beef and swiss sandwich with a side of poutine. The whole meal was extremely filling, I don't know if I can handle that type of order again, but I will try :)

My wife and I decided to check out this new place for our anniversary. We went solely based on previous reviews here and we were not disappointed. We reserved our table and even though the place was not packed they had a reserved sign on the table which was a nice touch. We started with the poutine and it is hands down the best poutine we've ever had, including some that we tried in Montreal. The poutine came piping hot with hand cut fries and every forkful was loaded with gravy and cheese but still retained it's heat until the last bite. I had the hot turkey sandwich with soup of the day (it was some kind of carrot soup). It was so delicious it reminded me of the day after Thanksgiving at my parents when they made dinner out of the leftovers. The bread was so fresh yet didn't become soggy and disappear under the gravy, absolutely perfect and melt in your mouth good!! I would highly recommend if you want some true comfort food. My wife had the Teriyaki chicken burger with Caesar salad. She thought that the burger was excellent but she was raving about the Caesar salad. She said that it is one of the best one she's tried and ranks right next to the Keg. How can you beat that? Our drinks were promptly served and refilled as needed. We met the owner and chef Dean. He was a very personable man who exudes a jovial attitude. The waitress working was very friendly and nice as well. It was the first time we've gone out without the kids in about a year and we will definitely be repeat customers and will actually bring the kids next time as we were told that the establishment gladly accepts kids. Overall our food and service was amazing, the ambiance has a nice cafe feel and is sure to be busy as word gets out about this hidden secret in Maple Ridge.
