King's Kitchen has been offering a menu of Canadian and Chinese classics since 1990.
I ordered take out from this place. Its been a few years since i tried it. I thought maybe it changed and i am on the hunt for some good chinese food in Maple Ridge. I'm sorry to say that King's Kitchen has missed the mark. Another bad chinese food joint in Maple Ridge, the list keeps growing. Shrimp fried rice, rice is mushy, no flavor. The crispy Ginger beef wasn't crispy and over-sauced, way too sweet for ginger beef. The special house chow mein was just so plain, no flavour, bland. Hot and sour soup was ok. Nothing to rave about here. I don't really see anything authentically chinese in the flavours of the dishes. It's just bland food.
So, this is my story..and my first review. I had to do this because of the reasons we were drawn to dine in here. First, we read in the Maple Ridge Times that this place won the best chinese restaurant award of the area. Afterwards we read an ad saying that the old chef, Wing, was back. Let me tell you. I think Wing was back from prison and with vengeance. This has been the worst food I have ever eaten in my entire life, PERIOD. I love restaurants and I love traveling and dining, so I have some solid base to compare. This was beyond words. Food was smushy, flavorless and mega greasy. The eggroll looked like if it was cooked with a new technique that I can describe as cold pressed fried food. I mean this thing was drenched in cold oil. We could not tell what the filling was. Almond gaiden was disgusting. The chicken tasted like if it was hanging out with cattle. The chicken was frozen and then fried. We could totally tell. The fried rice was rice with a bunch of canned veggies thrown in.. I mean, this was atrocious. There was no light in the back of the restaurant, very creepy. Plus, we could see people coming in and out of the kitchen, very odd.. Price, $35 dollars for two..To this day, I cant believe I spent $35 dollars in such dump...I would never go back there even if they paid me, thats how bad it was..keep wing locked up and the place too!!!...
I've gone here twice expecting it to be better the second time around. The food is mushy, tasteless and just plain bad. Take-out service is terrible, especially when they conveniently charge you extra for items that should be "on sale". I would say that this is the worst chinese restaurant in Maple Ridge. I've been to them all, and this is the worst. The only good thing about this place is the "ambiance" is decent, and that's not saying a lot. Dont bother wasting your time and money.
The food was horrible, as a matter of fact it went in the garbage. A waste of $40.00. My dog would not even eat it.... The only thing that was of any value was the take out containers, they looked nice! I can't even submit this because my review has to be at least 50 words. What else can a person say that it was disscusting and if we would have eaten any more than 3 bites we would all probably would have gotten sick. The whole idea of ordering in is to relax and not want to cook. There did I say enough.................
I am very glad to here that Wing is back helping the new owner. We went in last night to find a lot of the same friendly faces and that the food is once again worthy of the best asian cuisine title. Not only was the price reasonable they gave me a loyalty card that after ten visits I receive a free meal and a chance to win one of four trips (or maybe five I can't remeber) but regardless it doesn't matter because who else is offerring that kind of deal. Keep up the good work Wing and Johnson, at this rate you will continue to provide a quality service for another 25 years.
We hadn't ordered from this restaurant for some time as the last order was not good. We decided to try again tonight and we were delightfully surprised. The food was very fresh and tasty. This will be our main restaurant again, for this kind of food. Keep up the good work
We ordered from this restaurant for the first time recently and waited almost an hour for delivery, which was fine as it was a Friday night and we assumed they were busy. The driver finally arrived with the food and we set it on the table while my husband paid the driver with his Visa card. The driver came back a minute later and said that his wireless credit card machine apparently didn't work and asked my husband if he could run the card again. My husband gave him the card again and the driver said the machine had no signal and he asked my husband if he would get into his car with him and drive around the block until they could get a signal on the machine. My husband was gone for half an hour (after working almost 12 hours that day and wanting nothing more than to stay home and relax, hence why we ordcered take-out) and by the time he got back the food was cold and the machine was still not working. The driver then called the restaurant and told them what was happening and my husband offered to give them the card number over the phone so they could take the payment with the Visa machine at the restaurant, but the Chinese lady on the ohone told the driver to bring the food back with him!!!!!!! We were like, "Are you freakin kidding???" After we waited almost an hour for it to be delivered, and then they took my husband out for half an hour to get their stupid machine working and then they wanted to take the food BACK?? My husband told him NO WAY and shut the door. Very insulting. Why punish the first time customer for a problem with the restaurant????????? We will NEVER order from them again.
Its about the best way to describe it is Value & Taste for Money.
Although located in a dingy part of town I have always found the food
to be very Fresh tasting for Chinese and portions are incredible.
Favorite place even after the Reno which has just made it bigger.
Its the Food not the ambience that gets your attention and Loyalty.
Its seems people think the quality has gone down since the reno but
at least in our case everything still seems to excellent the quality and
Thanks and enjoy
A few months ago this would have been a much better review, but on our last order the pan-fried dumplings were "off". Really, really nasty, smelled horrible, etc. When we called to let them know, (we wanted to make sure that they didn't send any more of that batch out to others!) the girl just said, "Oh, okay, we'll give you a credit on your next order". No "Sorry"...nothing like that. I was not impressed.
My husband loves the chicken balls, they are pretty awesome. The dumplings are (usually) delicious. The fried rice is blah; lots of frozen mixed vegetables, and the pork often smells and tastes old, kind of "fridgey" if you know what I mean. Vegetable dishes are carelessly made, and heavy with starch.
Were it not for hubby's addiction to the chicken balls, I'd be shopping around for better Chinese takeout, but for now we're still ordering, with caution, from King's Kitchen.
We used to order from Kings Kitchen every couple of weeks but the last few times we were very disappointed. The beef was so over cooked that it was tough and we were unable to chew it. I was also very embarrassed when we had the same thing happen when we had guests and we had been raving about how great the food from Kings Kitchen is.
I have found the food to be better and a larger quantity when we have dined in but the ambiance is lacking and I would rather eat in the comfort of my own home.
I am currently looking for a new local Chinese Restaurant to order from.
This is a small off the beaten track Chinese food restaurant. It is MUCH nicer now that they have done the renovation and the food is very good compared to a lot of other Chinese food restaurants in Maple Ridge. You certainly don't have to get dressed up to eat in this establishment and are made to feel very welcome no matter who you are!!!
I don't know where blondie ate . but we found the chinese dishes to be the best in Maple Ridge . I also know some business people who dine there often and they also find the quality and taste is exceptional. I would not hesitate to recommend this restaurant to anyone
The food is the best i have ever had for westernized canadian food. Everything is fresh and the food is just fabulous. The prices are pretty fair, the lunch specials are pretty crazy you can get three items for 4.95!!!!!
The almond chicken or the ginger beef is probably my faves. War Wun Ton is Huge even the small one is big. I see on their website that they were voted best chinese food in town for the last couple years i can see why!!
The only thing that bothers me a little is the service is a little inconsistant some of the waitresses are very good but others are lacking in the service department. The delivery is sometimes inconsistant as well, sometimes it will be here in a half hour other times it will take an hour, but it is well worth the wait. overall i would highly reccommend this place!!
Okay lets get something straight. I understand that you cannot really expect a whole lot from Chinese food. They usually have a crap load of starch, frozen veggies, and mystery meat. Its kinda like McDonalds. When you're really hungry it kinda tastes good. Well I was really hungry before I ate this dog food and it tasted just like it too. Im not sure what happened to the chef or the recipes but the food is awful now. It wasn't that great before either but certainly not like this. For a dish that is really unhealthy for you it could at least taste good. They need to taste their own food! I have worked in hospitality for years and know a thing or two about mastering a cook book. The best thing you can do is impress yourself and have a little pride in the food you provide to paying guests. They obviously missed the boat on that way of thinking. I will probably give it another try in about 6-9 months, but they have some serious issues to fix before then. Why can't we have fresh, healthy, and simple chinese food. Its not that hard. Wish someone would open something up like that.
King's Kitchen used to be my favourite place to get chinese after a long week, and while it still is, now it's more out of habit than love. I still enjoy the food, for the most part, when it's done right. More and more lately, however, I've been getting food that's been overcooked, burnt or tough. And it may just be me, but it seems to be getting greasier as well.
I have to agree that whatever they do to renovate, the setting is not in the most pleasant part of town. I don't care to park there for long periods at night, but I mostly just pick up, so that's ok. Service is usually ok, but I have had a couple of issues of being hung up on (accidently) and of having things forgotten on my order. Once I was late picking up and was given real attitude. It's my food that's going to be cold, I don't see why they should care.
Overall, the restaurant is still very solid, the food can be quite good, and the value is definitely there. If I were to compare it to other chinese places I've eaten at somewhat recently, I would still choose King's, it's just disappointing that it's not as good as it used to be.
Since they upgraded this place has gone down the tubes. Again I moved back to town only to find all the places I loved have 'expanded' and gone to shit.
FOOD: Obviously a different chef. Tastes like they use frozen vegetable medley in place of chopped veggies in alot of their menu items (I know the old chef used to chop/could see him through the door when the waitresses went in and out of the kitchen)
SERVICE: Still great
VALUE: Meh. Average price for below average grub
AMBIANCE: What do you want it is a small hole in the wall in the Ridges ghetto.
Not impressed and will probably stick with Ocean Village
Used to eat at Kings a lot and unfortunatley due to their success they have sacrificed quality food for modernization. Since the restaurant has been upgraded the ambience and decor is much nicer but unfortunatley the food in taste and quality has suffered. I would not reccomend this restaurant. Its okay still but better is to be had at other establishments in the Ridge.
