Home-style food made from fresh ingredients. A roadside family restaurant reminiscent of a simpler, friendlier time. Generous helpings at reasonable prices, another throwback to an earlier era.
Mrs. C and I were in MR and looking for chow, and we spotted this place. The interior looked like a typical family restaurant, sort of like a Denny's/Pantry... Everything was clean except the carpets. Service was pretty good and the place was packed, although we may have been the youngest people eating there.
We ordered a light lunch: I had a schnitzel with fries, and my beloved dining companion had a spinach salad and a cup of soup. We both had coffee. The schnitzel was way overcooked and was tough as leather. At least the fries were okay. I got a rather expensive side of gravy and that helped with the schnitzel. One point that irritated me was that the special schnitzel sauce touted on the menu was in fact the same gravy I got on the side. That was just plain wrong. The spinach salad was acceptable, and the soup was tasty so Mrs. C was satisfied.
As for value, that was a big disappointment. The meal was way more expensive that it ought to have been, and the total was about 30 bucks with tax and tip.
We won't be back. There are better choices in town.
Some friends and I dropped in for dessert last night and well, they didn't listen to my suggestion. No more healthy choices but I have to admit that I've tried a couple of their new desserts and WOW! They have a new apple crisp and strawberry rhubarb pie that are both to die for. They may be the opposite of healthy but YUMMY!!!! Now if they could somehow make these desserts healthy I'd be in heaven.
It's not like me to give a compliment without some sort of criticism (ask my family) so I'll leave off with this. They have a nice little fire place in their entry way but they never light it. It would be a nice addition to the ambiance if they did,
Stopped in for lunch with my Mom. Very nice place, clean and the service was friendly. There was always a server around if you needed something. My Mom had a soup, which was home-made, which she said was very good. She also had the schnitzel, also very tasty. I had a bacon & cheese burger with fries. The burger was large, and very good, also the fries, very large portion. Good value for the amount you get.
Met my mother at this restaurant the other day at her recommendation. I'll be back!
Service was very friendly. My Mom loved the particular waitress who I guess takes care of her on a regular basis. She was a bit fake for me but some people like all the "sweeties" and "darlings".
The food was the real highlight. I had my stand by bacon and eggs and was really impressed. Eggs cooked just right, bacon was fresh and they give you 2 types of potato to choose from. I guess this is new because the waitress made a point of explaining them to us. I had the shredded and my Mom had the deep fried ones. Both were really good. My Mom had the special and really enjoyed it too.
On the way out Mom pointed out the pies and I'll be back for dinner soon so I can try them out! Looked really good.
The only thing I really didn't like was the coffee refills. A bit slow for my liking.
I can honestly say that I have eaten at this restaurant at least a hundred times and have never been disappointed. The menu is very extensive, the portions are huge and the prices are very reasonable. The staff are always very cheerful and accommodating.
I usually have my daughter with me and they offer free baby meals (Mac & Cheese, pancakes or mashed potato and gravy) which is awesome!
The one complaint that I have heard in the past from family members is that they didn't like the hash browns served with breakfast. Home Restaurant must have heard this complaint many times as they have now changed the hash browns.
The restaurant is busy, but well worth the wait. The food is just like home, the ambiance feels like home, and the staff are very polite.
The environment is child friendly, which is very important. The deserts are to die for! I highly recommend the Cheesecake!
Stopped in last week for brunch. My wife ordered a burger and fries which she said was very good. The fries were fresh chipped and reminded us of going for fish and chips at Grandville Island as kids.
I had Sausage and eggs and was impressed. Sausages were run of the mill but the pan fries were awesome. Nice to finially get real potatoes and not those rehydrated shredded things you see at most restaurants or those deep fried cubes.
Service was the best part. The hostess and both waitresses made us feel like a million bucks.
We'll be back next time we're in the area for sure!
I have eaten at this restraunt for five years & today was my last day.It has slowly been going downhill with the quality of their food. The food now comes dripping in grease , the toast should be toasted , if I wanted raw bacon I would go & get some sushi & last the hash browns come in cubes covered in oil and not cooked. They used to have good omlettes. The servers are excellent.I would not recommend eating here as I just wasted $26 for two breakfasts.
So i have been here several times and have only had 1 bad experience. The breakfats is great expect for their hashbrowns. They are crispy and good on the top but mushy and unappitizing in the middle.Their sausages are great and so are their omlets. They are jammed packed with stuffing. I had their special of ribs once and they were horrible. They were cold, not tender and the sauce was less than perfect. The service is great. The servers are very sweet. Basically i would reccomend this place for anyone that wants home cooked food with a relaxed atmosphere.
Every time I have been to the Home Restaurant on Lougheed Highway, there always is a lineup and wait time of 15 to 20 minutes. Which is a compliment to the restaurant but very frustrating when you're looking for a sit down meal and you're hungry.
Offerings are the typical home style favorites like fried appetizers, soups, comfort food and cakes and pies, all in a cozy setting of eclectic antqiues and brown hued accents.
Staff always seem to be in a rush though, which is one reason why this restaurant has not become a favorite of mine.
Prices are what you would expect of a sit down homestyle pancake house diner.
We stopped by unexpectedly for brunch one Sunday morning and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The sausages were excellent and the pancakkes were perfection. Despite what apparently is always a lineup, we'll be coming back.
