Saw the little hole in the wall in Maple Ridge and thought we would give it a try. It is garage style which I don't mind but did not enjoy the cold. You can see the air space under the door and on a cold spring day, it is cool in the restaurant. Service was friendly. Ordered a cilantro burrito and my girlfriend ordered some Mexican rice bowl thing. Took longer than expected to get the food with only 2 other tables. When the food came, the portion size was quite large. If you look on their website the prices are not correct as the burrito was in the $12 range versus $9.75. I'm not going to complain about the price, the portion size was large, but I do expect a decent flavour.
This was the big let down. The food has very little seasoning and very little consideration for ingredient position. If I am paying someone to make food for me, I want them to add seasoning to make it interesting. The burrito had very little cilantro in it which is interesting for a cilantro burrito. I asked for the habanero hot which was also disappointing. The only flavouring which helped save the burrito was the hot sauce bar. I put hot sauce on every bite to try to add some flavour and heat to make the meal somewhat interesting. The burrito was mostly refried beans with very little beef. The way the burrito was made put most of the meat at one end. This means when you are eating the food you don't get a mixture of ingredients. Basically I had a bean dip wrap with what basically tasted liked canned refried beans. My girlfriend's rice dish was pretty much the same. It was too large for her but had the same lack of seasoning and a lack of meat for the price.
I would not go back to this restaurant. I love authentic Mexican food for the freshness and the flavours. This didn't come close. I could get more seasoning and enjoy the flavours more at Taco Time. If you prefer volume of food over taste this may work for you. If you prefer taste over volume, skip this one.
I used to love this place. Great food reasonable prices and fun atmosphere for what it was. Also had an awesome salsa bar with many different and yummy salsa, I know they redid the place a couple of years ago.
We went and checked it out finally. It looked the same pretty much with different tables, the salsa bar gone and the order counter gone. It was now a "sit down". Ok so it still was in a dumpy garage but trying to be fancy. The menu has way fewer items on it and no tacos or anything like that - at a Mexican restaurant? Odd.
The service was slow even though there were only a few tables occupied. Got a small bowl of chips and were asked what type of salsa we wanted. We had the medium and it was awful. It was slimy as if it was one of those bottled ones, not freshly made like they used to have. The chips were not nice freshly made like they used to be there were out of a bag. Only a few were whole on top and then all the others were crushed and broken until the bottom third that was all crumbs.
The burrito was good and had nothing "weird" in it my partner said. It was very large but at $12 it really only contained inexpensive ingredients and came with nothing else. I think this one used to be about $8. The fajitas were massively overpriced at $14. There were 4 very small tortillas, some food service premade shredded cheese, a pile of cheap iceberg lettuce that was cut way too thick, a thimble of salsa and a steaming pan of about 5 burnt onion slices and exactly 6 small shrimp, NOT prawns as advertised. There was aslo nothing else, no beans, rice or even guacamole. This is a COMPLETE rip off - do not order. The other REALLY poor value was the kids meal. $6.50 for a 2 VERY small tortillas with a little cheese, a juice box and a freezie(a NO NAME one from the Superstore no less so you can imagine how much that cost them). I was STUNNED when you compare that to say Whitespot or somewhere where they woulc have got a chocolate milk, full size grill cheese, fries and a and ice cream sundae for less.
The other kid had a bean burrito which he said was cold mostly and was SUPER boring mostly lettuce. Two nasty plastic cups of pop rang in at $5.50. So for over $50 PLUS a tip now it was a sit down and NO alchol I felt totally ripped off. the ingredients we had cost way less thatn $5, If this was authentic or different mexican in anyway maybe but it's cheap food made from cheap ingredients. Spend $50 at a good restautant and buy all these inexpesive things at Walmart and make the same at home.
I have been going to this restaurant for years, and love the new changes. This restaurant is not a "quick service" restaurant anymore, nor does it say it is anywhere. This site unfortunatley has the wrong name. It is just called "Habanero Grill".
I love the the "Authentic" mexican ambiance in the restaurant. It's just like being in Mexico. Since when is $50 alot to spend for a Dinner of 3 or 4? Go to to taco time dude. The salsa's are all made fresh. The medium salsa is actually their signature salsa which they roast fresh themselves...super yummy!
Since when is $6.50 too much to spend on your kid for a burrito, drink, and Churro...yes a churro, not a freezie??
There are taco's on the menu, i order them all the time, and they are super fresh and good.
If your looking for quick, cheap, and processed, try a fast food place. If your looking for great fresh mexican food, and a cool atmospere, I strongly recommend it there. And always get your food, Habanero Hot!..soo good!
First visit since the revamp. Liked it better before, miss the self serve nacho chip toppings. Crab bites were deep fried, smiliar to jalapeno poppers, fine for $5. Burrito was very poor ... cold, essentially iceburg lettuce with minimal diced chicken many bits of which were very tough, clearly the chicken had been cooked earlier and re-heated, possibly in the microwave? $10, wasn't worth $5.
Much preferred the charm of the old place, although the server was great, smily, quality checks, etc. Doesn't save the place though, won't be back.
Ive been a few times and every time is always enjoyable, not outstanding but if your ever craving mexican and youre in town it's a good place to go. Ive had the Hacienda burrito and the taco salad and they are pretty good. They shouldn't have renovated it from what it was before well atleast have had kept the salsa bar, that was my favorite part about the place.
I have always wanted to try out this restaurant and last Saturday had the opportunity to do so. I wish I had kept it on the the "to do" list.
We sat down at a table that was beside a table that had possibly just left. There were fries and food all over the table and the floor, as well as a tip.
We ordered drinks (the lime margarita was FANTASTIC!)
we were brought complimentary chips and salsa..adequate ( chips were very broken and the salsa was watery)
I ordered a bowl with rice beans and chicken with no sour cream.
My partner also ordered the bowl.
25 minutes and another margarita later they arrived.Lukewarm and mine had the sour cream on it.
She took it back and after a few minutes it was brought back out where you could see the remains of the sour cream scraped off the rice.
I began to eat and found the temperature was cold and the the tomato salsa was off..I was trying to get through it but every few bites had a rock solid piece of dried rice.(pretty sure rice was kept in warming dish and when it dried around edges it was just stirred in)
My partner also was making a few loud crunching noises with a RICE dish.
I gave up and when the waitress came around and asked how it was I told her ..she said she would inform the kitchen. She came back to ask if I wanted it packed to go? I declined and restated that it was inedible because of the rice. She said oh yeah I'll tell them in the kitchen.
The bill was brought and it was $55 + for 4 drinks and 2 inedible dishes...won't be heading back
I will make the drive to Charlies in Port Moody for Mexican food.
We went back for lunch today for the first time since they changed the format. For anyone who hasnt been there, keep in mind that it is a smaller space with that shares the same space with a car detailing shop(think diners drive ins and dives). its homey, you arent paying for the ambience. the food today was consistent and was up to my expectations from the last time I had been-I had a cilantro burrito that was so big, I have more than enough left over for a full dinner tonight! I added a rice side for 1.25 that really I didnt need. Food was good, fresh and at $9.00, not very expensive. My lunch partner had a $4.00 tacquito that he said was very fresh and filling.
Service was slower, but with only once cook and one server on I understand. Big takeout business, but if you think you are going to just pop in to get something to go,think again. Id call ahead for sure.
This place puts me in mind of a stop in,have a beer or two and a taco and leave stop like you get in Mexico as opposed to the full dinner experience. If you are coming back from a walk on the dykes or a day at the lake I would recommend this place completely!
we went twice last year and had bad experiences both times and said we wouldn't go back but we wanted Mexican food so we went back and boy am I glad we did! We had fantastic service and we knew she must have been the owner because she made us feel like she genuinely cared about our experience. She recommended ways to make our meals even better and everyone of them was great! They have a great selection of Mexican beer and the Enchiladas were phenomenal! They have been open 1 month and I have been back 4 times!
A regular customer for several years, I've been back twice since they re-opened in early May.
I'm disappointed that they've changed the format. Limited menu that lacks many of the old favourites.
The servers are untrained and unaware. Hopefully by the end of the summer they'll have figured things out.
Despite the 'renovation' the place is still a barely-refurbished auto-repair garage. This was ok when Habanero's was mostly take-out (sit at a table if you want to), but with a focus more towards eating-in your more expensive entrees... The ambiance sux.
Awesome food. Nice sunny, Mexican atmosphere. Every time I go I feel like slowing life down and taking the rest of the day off. Staff is consistently friendly. Definitely not fine dining, but ambience is appropriate.
After visiting in the summer we were disappointed by the changes, food was ok and service was terrible, no salsa bar and alot of new staff who did not know what they were doing!
But..... We decided to go back this past Saturday night to give it one last try and are glad we did!
The service was awesome, new items were added to the menu, we tried the fajitas (which came out sizzling) and the server recommended enchiladas!
Everything was fresh and tasted amazing, we were offered complimentary chips and salsa, the server even brought us more salsa without having to request it! There was also a wide array of hot sauce on the counter to choose from which made my husband happy!
We almost gave up on one of our favourite restaurants but are glad we gave it another try, we will definitely go back again!
Despite all the great reviews on this site, we ate here tonight for only the second time and were very disappointed.
We just had a quick snack so didn't try enough things to say everything is half done, but all three items we ordered were barely decent.
We had an order of nachos to share. The chips were stale tasting and the cheddar cheese shreds were not melted on at least half the chips. Even where the cheese was melted, it was barely so. This made it hard to eat all the olives, tomato chunks, jarred pickled jalapeno slices, red pepper and green onion pieces that kept falling off the chips. The plate was large (great size!) but the whole thing came with less than a 1/4 cup of a very good salsa and the same amount of sour cream.
My companion had a margarita for 5.00 which I will swear had no tequila in it at all. I had two sips from different parts of the slushy drink and nothing. It was like a slushy made from frozen limeade. He finished it but wasn't pleased.
I had a slice of their caramel pecan flan. It tasted like a slice of pecan pie from a grocery store bakery. It was hard and solid and cold with carmel sauce drizzled over the top before it was chilled. The flan layer was like a 1/2 inch of caramel fudge and that was topped with a sweet caramel pecan layer. It did not appear anything like the flans I've had in other Mexican restaurants or the ones I've made at home from Mexican recipes. Kudos for pretty presentation though - it came with a pomegranate reduction drizzled on the plate but that was spoiled by the 3 dabs of cheap (the kind that tastes vaguely of coconut oil) spray on whipped cream. After three bites I left it on the plate.
Service was friendly and they seemed concerned about my leaving 3/4 of the flan but we were in a real hurry so I didn't address any of the food issues with the staff. My impression was that they would have tried to help but we just didn't have time, and were under some stress so didn't really want to discuss our disappointment. Perhaps if we had told them they would have repaired everything. Except the flan....I don't see what could have been done about that.
In short, we wont be back soon. I'm intrigued by the other raves the place got, though. And there were a number of other diners who all seemed happy so maybe we just were unlucky in our choices.
my boyfriend and i had the burritos and one of the daiquiris. the complimentary chips are great as well as the salsa bar you can help yourself to.
and the burritos themselves were great, generous portions and all but way too many beans in my beef burrito which i found slightly cumbersome when eating. the flavor of the beans overpowered everything else. i don't know if that's just how they do it here or if mine was an irregularity. that notwithstanding, i'll definitely come back. good food and good service.
I've been here several times and service is awesome. One of the staff members goes out of her way to make you happy and make you feel welcome. The food is also awesome. I recommend Habanero's to everyone. If you love mexican food or if have never tried it, there is something you'll like at Habanero's.
Worth stopping it - can't decide if i like the ambiance - it is outside, but in a parking lot with all the highway traffic passing by.
Food is really good for the price charged and this place makes a great lunch or take-out dinner option.
My husband and I used to really enjoy picking up dinner and lunch at Habanero's. We were sad to see it closed since Christmas and were excited for a re opening. The food was so superior to Taco Del Mar. When it finally opened, we headed out to see what changes had been made. Esthetically the restaurant has lost it's casual charm. It would have been easier to change out a few chairs to spruce up the place, no need to make it look worse by trying to make it appear like a gourmet restaurant. The menu was sparse, gone were the reasons we used to Love Habaneros. Including the fresh salsa bar. Our food took so long that the server let us know the meal was on the house. This was nice considering we hadn't complained yet. The food was practically inedible. Our appies arrived with our dinner and were obviously deepfried frozen food. The meat was so over fried that it turned that dark crunchy texture that burnt meat gets. We were so completely disappointed with everything. And will never be back.
We LOVE HABANEROS! The food is AMAZING! The salsa is AWESOME! The service is fast and friendly! We bring all our friends and family here for lunch when they come to visit! If you want the best Mexican food from Mission to Vancouver - STOP HERE! You won't be disappointed!
We LOVE HABANEROS!
We LOVE HABANEROS!
We LOVE HABANEROS!
Thank heavens for this place. The gastronomic scene in Maple Ridge is pretty bleak, but at least at Habeneros you can get some delicious, authentic Mexican food at a decent price. The only downside? The restaurant is housed in a converted auto mechanic shop, complete with garage door. If I could give negative stars for ambiance I would. But nevertheless, the food is delicious, consistent, and reasonably priced.
I rarely go to Maple Ridge without visiting Habañero's! Besides GM Restaurant, Habañero's is one of Maple Ridge's biggest surprises!
They custom-make burritos and other dishes (they'll do a fajita on request), the service is super-fast, comes with free nachos and self-serve salsa, and the owner is very friendly and happy to offer suggestions.
My favourite is the "Cilantro Burrito with chicken, but with no beans" - absolutely fabulous with tons of fresh cilantro! The food is always fresh, made to order, and very quick. The taquitos are good, the nacho salads are awesome, and I believe they've recently begun serving margaritas and beer.
I find the food at this place is lighter than most Mexican food I've tried. The tortillas and Burritos don't get soggy with sauce as they sit in your plate and there's a bit more vegy content than other places. This is a nice change. First visit was on an Entertainment coupon and I've been back regularly, prices are good, portions are good.
Highly recommend giving this a try.
