Under New Management

Submitted Thursday, September 6, 2012 - 10:49am [Dine in]

We've been eating here for a few years now and have always had an excellent experience. However, recently they underwent a management change and while you expect there to be some growing pains, it has been long enough to see that their basic quality is going down. We've been back a few times now since the change and each visit has been successively less impressive.

The service, while never overwhelming, is now quite slow and sullen. We don't usually manage to get a smile from whoever our server of the evening is until near the end of the meal. Not a big deal, but part of a trend. Where the restaurant was usually quite full before, it's slowly getting emptier. Their take-out business seems to be solid still, and that seems to be where their focus is, although my own experience was not good, ending with having to go back to work with no lunch at all because they were so slow and full of excuses. If you eat in, be prepared to hear the telephones, front and back, ringing LOUDLY. I guess it's important to get those take-out orders, since that's all the business they're doing now.

To the food - very inconsistent - even on a single plate of squid. Some was cooked perfectly, some far overdone and still others quite raw! The teppan platter is supposed to come with filet mignon but it looked and tasted more like mystery meat the last time. The noodles we ordered were definitely a smaller portion than we've ever been served before. And finally, the peking duck - always a stand out, and still possibly the best thing on the menu... I have no complaints about that except for the carving. I'm sorry Raymond, you just looked like an amateur hacking away at it. No finesse at all and we ended up with very large pieces that left us feeling short-changed as each of the five of us were lucky if we even got two bites. Best of luck in the future. We'll be missing this place until we hear there has been some kind of turn-around.

Poor, slow service
By anatomy of vancouver (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, September 2, 2012 - 12:50am [Dine in]

This place has gone downhill since it came under new management a few months back, and even back then it was mediocre at best. I came in for a Sunday breakfast at about 4 pm, and waited for more than half an hour for my food. The best part? There where at max 6-7 open menus, and the service was still moving at a snails pace. I've been a cook for the past 3 years in various restaurants so I know the basics of the industry well.

I had the "Eggs Blackstone", and for a dish consisting of poached eggs, English muffins and bacon it should not have taken a half hour. Bill time on something like that should be 10 minutes MAX. The server didn't give me any update on my food at all throughout the wait time. No "There's going to be a wait, do you want to stay or leave?" Because if she had told me it would take half an hour I would've walked out with no hesitation. *Note that the server wasn't the older lady who is the owner, she's a much better server. It was a young woman.

They where also out of English muffins, but I wasn't told until 20 minutes after being sat, so that tells me they didn't even start making my dish until 20 minutes later at least. There was only one older gentleman cooking, so it's not surprising it took a bit longer, but if service is that slow every Sunday they should bring in someone to help him during the rush so people aren't sitting around having to enjoy the eccentric, cluttered and dated decor with empty stomachs. When the food finally did come it was mediocre. It was seasoned, but it would be hard to screw up a dish of salty bacon and hollandaise sauce on bread. The hollandaise sauce was also over portioned and nearly overflowing off the plate which as a bit off putting. The eggs where well cooked. Oh, and I also got to enjoy the server and her family sitting in a booth adjacent to mine (Literally 1.5 meters away, they had the whole place and they sit next to me...) with loud children and them constantly talking, so when I finally did get my food I ate to the sound of a family get together which was extremely annoying and completely unprofessional. The meal came out to 12$ with coffee.

I've been to the Kalma previously too and have tried other items such as the Roast beef dinner, and it was extremely bland. The veg was boring, unseasoned, sad blanched cauliflower and carrots. The roast beef was tender but textureless and unseasoned, and I swear the gravy was instant gravy out of a package. If if wasn't instant than it just sucked. I've also tried the sandwiches and they where better, but again nothing special. This place has no wow factor, and nothing about the food is interesting or appetizing.

My critique may seem harsh but I have no idea how people give this place such great reviews. If I had to use a few adjectives to describe it it would they would be: Boring, insipid, mediocre, slow. What you see is what you get, don't expect to be dazzled. In my opinion your money would be better spent somewhere else.

We have been going there for several years now.Almost tried every dishes in the menu. They are all good but the best are Backed chicken penne and the ribs special. The taste of the sauce is incredible and pasta is organic. They make pasta themselves every night. It is sooooo fresh and tasty.Service is good, friendly and fast, prices are reasonable.Portions are huge,it is enough for your next day lunch too.I definitely recommend this place to every one.Even if you are not a pasta fan, they have delicious thin crust, italian style pizza.Try it once and you can not stop going back there.

Great Authentic Mexican

This was our first day after moving to Langley and we decided to take a quick unpacking break to go out for Mexican food. Cielito Lindo really hit the spot! I worked in Mexico City for 3 1/2 years and this place reminds me so much of my favourite hole-in-the-wall (in a good way) spots we used to go out to for lunch. We ordered chicken taquitos, pork enchiladas with red and green salsas and all dishes were great (although I liked the kick of the salsa verde vs. the salsa roja). Our server was so charming and my 3-year old loved her. You cannot beat the prices as well. We'll definitely be back. Often. Hasta pronto!

Went in with an entertainment book coupon and our waitress Janet was super helpful explaining the do's and don'ts. Well I gotta say there aren't many don'ts which allowed us to have the daily special baby back ribs @ $18.95 and the baked cannelloni gratis. Great deal great meal. Janet was friendly and right on the ball. Restaurant is very cosy and warm with seating for about 45. Very novel booth dividers using bottles filled with beans and pasta instead of spindles. Lots of parking. I have more coupons so I will be back.

Food so so but nice surprise at the end
By Binky of Coquitlam (32 Reviews)
Submitted Wednesday, August 8, 2012 - 5:03pm [Dine in]

Had a late lunch at this location on Monday, Aug. 6 at 3:30 pm. We both had the Mr Mike's steak sandwich. The meat was cooked to order correctly, and it was open faced. We laughed when we saw they used one 4 inch chunk of a bun and that one of our pieces was 3/4 thick and the other got the 1/4 sliver remainder ...so neither of us were completely happy. There was absolutely NOTHING else on the bun, but the smallish piece of meat. No condiments, no lettuce leaf, no tomato, nothing..... The fries that came with were fine but not freshly fried. Two onion rings also accompanied that were good. We also shared a ceasar salad to start and it was good.

The server saw I was opening a gift after the meal and asked if it was a birthday and yes (the next day). She offered a free dessert but we declined as we were too full and it would have been rude to ask to take it home. A lovely surprise came when the bill was given to us - was that the manager suggested to the server to deduct one of the Carona beers we had ordered instead. That was a very nice gesture and a top notch customer service act.

Trying to find a good little niche spot in Langley for breakfast, but this place is not it. It's a bit overpriced for breakfast and there is nothing really to be desired to wanted. I ordered eggs, toast and hashbrowns and it wasn't great. Boyfriend order the same with bacon.... again it wasn't that great.

Onwards and upwards to search for the cute family diner.

Go elsewhere.

My favourite Indian place

Their food and value is fantastic. The garlic naan is to die for and my boyfriend and I crave it when we haven't eaten it for a while. It makes me eat gluten(and pay for it) when we go there. I love their butter chicken and recently tried their mutter paneer which was also excellent. I love that it comes with rice (you don't have to pay!). My boyfriend orders tandori chicken which he loves, and loves the sizzling platter it comes on. Again it comes with rice.

The samosas are delicious as well, but I find I get too full having an appy, Indian food is filling.

The buffet during the lunch time weekdays is good value and gives you a chance to try other dishes. Fridays they have butter chicken!

We frequent here with the entertainment coupon. It's good for the price of the food. The service is hit and miss depending on who you get and how busy they are.

If you like your pasta to taste a certain way, I would recommend telling them how you like it. They cut down on the garlic in their sauces people people were complaining of too much flavour. I am the opposite and say load up on the garlic.

Had a great time!

Our family with Grands, Parents and kids (toddler too), all showed up for supper. It was really busy (sign of a great place!) and there was an hour wait. We were treated to bread and dip while waiting in the beautiful sunshine.

Bobbi, our server, was really friendly and energetic. While she apologized for how busy it was, she still managed to serve us as if we were her only diners. She had some great suggestions and happily refilled glasses and bowls of soup. She treated my children as people and not a torture. While it helped that my children happen to use their Ps and Qs, the equality was appreciated. Her small note to my In-Laws was sweet and personalized. She's definitely a keeper for this restaurant.

The wine suggestion was happily received, loved that a taste was offered before we decided on a wine. The Zuppa Toscana is delish and the Seafood Brodetto was exactly what I needed as I had been feeling slightly under the weather. Everyone raved about their food and we are definitely going to go back. For the quality and quantity of food and service, the price is not undeserved.

The only real downer was just how busy it was and how long we had to wait. As pretty as the place was, it was as crowded as a mall. I strongly suggest reservations if you don't want to wait the hour or so.

Awesome Souvlaki
By David-Vanderbyl of Vancouver (3 Reviews)
Submitted Sunday, July 29, 2012 - 4:25pm [Dine in]

My wife and I have been visiting this restaurant for about 10 years now. We always order souvlaki dinners and they are always excellent. In fact, I don't think we've ever had a bad experience at this restaurant. The people posting about salads swimming in oil and whatever just don't have a clue what they're talking about. The greek salad is always excellent, as is everything else.

Service is generally good - no complaints.

We usually go early Saturday evening and the owner is always there, so she's definitely hands-on.

All in all a great dining experience. This place has been voted "#1 Greek Restaurant" many years in a row, and it's easy to understand why.

Greasy food, salad one olive, veggies floating in tons of oil, and the meal was very small portion of rice compared to other greek restaurants. No drink service refills, and there was maybe 4 other tables being used, but waitress was sorting cutlery instead, even though my glass was empty for most of my time eating, and we were ignored on purpose. Wont go again, and all because they wanted to save 50 cents to not refill some pop, sad really.

Great taste of fresh cooked food. The calamari wasn't good at all
and ridiculously overpriced. Service was mediocre, even with two
servers. The restaurant itself is old and needs updating.
The worst part was the very long wait for my order. Apologies
We're made but I don't think we'll return. A lot better in the area.
This place doesn't even offer a discount for pick up orders.

Impressed, high quality, fresh, exciting menu, a bit pricey but worth it, portions are larger .......... its not your average sushi place. The place is always busy(because its so good!), so the service can be a bit slow at times; if I wanted fast food ide take my kids to macdonalds for cheesburgers.

We catered - chicken, salads - caesar, pasta and greek - bread and salsa. It was tasty, plentiful and affordable. My niece picked up the food. It certainly made it easy for us to organize the party. If there was any criticism it's that some of the chicken breast meat was a little dry and perhaps the pieces could have been cut smaller (I'm the only one who seemed to think the latter was necessary - everyone else was chowing down. I'd recommend doing so again.
