Waterstone is a steakhouse and grill.
Only been here once as it's way out of the way for me.
Wife and I had a gourmet burger and a chicken pesto sandwich. Right away I loved how you could get fries, salad or soup with either, in particular french onion soup ($1 more actually), which we both had. The hamburger was indeed gourmet with some interesting earthy flavours and all and all pretty good. My wife totally loved the chicken pesto sandwich - myself not as much but it was stlll pretty good. The french onion soups were great. Overall one of the tastiest lunches we've had in a long time.
No complaints with the service. There was only one server but it was quiet.
The place is new and pretty nice. I'm not completely sold on the 60's carpet and dark laminate woods but it comes together decent enough.
Anyway, maybe we came at a good time and made some good menu choices but it was all great. Surprised there are as many negative reviews as there are. Will look forward to trying it again when we get out to Langley.
Hubby and I were out in Langley on other "chores", and drove by this place. I had remembered seeing reviews here, so we thought we would drop in...
It took a while to be seated, even late on a Sunday noon-time, but eventually we sat at a window table in the sun.
Our server was very pleasant and very "non-age-ist"....being middle-aged, I am starting to find this particular prejudice annoying....and we ordered drinks and food.
They have a "satay" portion to their menu which means "tasting"-size portions. We had the prawn cocktail and the scallop and bacon "satay". Each was a substantial hunk of seafood with a mixed salad and vinaigrette base. Both very fresh and good. We also ordered the yam fries, which came with a cumin/curry dip...VERY nice.
We split a grilled salmon sandwich, which came with a choice of salad, soup or fries. We chose the Caesar salad, which was very good. Not too oily or salty, but not blanc. The grilled salmon was supposed to come with a wasabi mayonnaise. The salmon was fresh and moist, but we could not discern the wasabi...?
Overall, a very pleasant lunch.
The Bar: the bartenders are cute (especially the one with the Aussie accent); drinks were ok...but nothing overly inventive.
The Dining Room: the food was sub par... I ordered the lobster raviolli and rather than taste lobster, it seemed the overly-heavy sauce took over. The flavour in the sauce was bland but it was really heavy-- I ended up asking for fresh basil (which they charged me for) to try to salvage the dish. Both the chocolate cake and tart we had for dessert tasted like something store bought rather than made in house. Worst of all it didn't tasted like day rubbery day-old cake.
We also sat near a party of 10 and most of them clearly had too much to drink. They were rowdy, shouting / swearing a lot, staggering around and at one point throwing things at one another. For a "higher end" restaurant it was a little disappointing that the servers / manager didn't stop them or try to get them to quiet down.
It's good to see Langley getting a restaurant with downtown feel, but Waterstone is overrated and disappointing.
Like others I had read the reviews of this restaurant and felt trepidation to even dine at The Waterhouse however had a complimentary appy coupon and thought I would take the chance. When we were greeted by a smiling hostess and seated right away into a nice booth. Our server came a minute later took our drink order and was back in no time with the drinks and to take our orders. We ordered the jumbo scallops & bacon appy and the coconut curry prawn bowl for the main to share. So looking around the restaurant for a Monday night thought it was actually quite busy and with the lower lighting it was a relaxing atmosphere. Now for the surprise the food, the scallops were the best I have had in years cooked perfectly, they must cook the bacon first and then wrap as so many time in order for the bacon to be cooked enough the scallop itself is cooked to almost rubber. Then we had the coconut curry prawns and again it was wonderful so much flavour! I have a feeling it may be the beef that you may stay away from as the seafood seems to be spot on.
My husband and I received a gift certificate from our son for Christmas for a dinner at the Waterstone and a movie. After a great movie at Colossus we headed for an early (6PM) dinner at the Waterstone. I was VERY leary as I have read all the reviews on this website. We were greeted quickly...there were many tables filled, we were served promptly and with smiles. Our meal was delicious, including a fair-sized piece of steak. Though we found the meal slightly salty, it was delicious. I must add that we do not use salt at all at home so most restaurant meals taste salty to us. I kept looking for evidence to justify the complaints that I had read about. I am wondering if the management read these reviews because if they did, they certainly acted on them. Or, perhaps, we were at a different Waterstone? I would highly recommend the Waterstone to all our friends and will definitely return. It was a great "date night" and Christmas present! The jumbo bacon-wrapped scallops were amazing!
This was my second time at Waterstone. After a good experience with a friend I decided to take my fiance out to dinner. We were quickly seated, server was a little slow in taking our drink order, considering it wasn't that busy at all. The red wine I ordered was unavailable, our server informed us they were revamping the wine list (definatley needed) not a problem. We ordered a starter ceaser to share, when it arrived, in two seperate bowls we thought it looked a little large, sure enough they had brought us the full size, not the starter. The salad was covered in bacon, which I can't eat, my salad was replaced, (was okay, but very fishy...too much anchovy.) I'm not sure why they offer no descriptions of the dishes on their menus....inconveninces like these could quite easily be prevented. Ou food took quite a while to arrive, considering we ordered a sandwich and a pizza. Meals were great until my fiance discovered a long hair in his sandwich. His meal was comped, which we appreciated. Overall not as good of an experience I had on my first visit.....don't think we'll go back for much more than a Friday night martini.
We have been to this restaurant a few times. The decor is beautiful, west coast contemporary. The food is awful but worse than the food is the service! We have had the exact same experience every single time we have gone there: the servers (different people each time) have forgotten our drink orders, we were never given cutlery (shouldn't it already be on the table?) and they took forever to bring us the food we ordered...when it came, we still did not have cutlery. It appears as if the wait staff is inexperienced or untrained. IMO, this place should be shut down and turned into a Joey's or a Cactus Club (they have better foor and training programs for their staff).
I have been several times it gave it a great recommendation so our group came for dinner. It was such a disappointment!..The steak which was requested cooked through came burnt, hard to the point that a steak knife wouldn't cut it. The potatoes were burnt beyond being edible, staff assured me they come that way they just warm them. If thats true they should change suppliers. The only redeeming item was the lobster starter. I would have to think long and hard before I spent a buck at this place and will never recommended it to anyone.
I have driven by here many times and finally decided to give it a try. Thought it might be busy but we went early on a Saturday evening. There was plenty of parking and when we went in we were seated immediately. Menus were prompt and drinks too.
Menu was not extensive but gave a fair selection of a variety of different items. I started with the Lobster Melt - it was enough for 2 to share and very delicious. I had a steak, which was excellently cooked and served with mashed potatoes and crispy asparagus. We shared an apple pie with ice cream - this was just too good. Our server was friendly and very prompt. Best meal I've had in a while, and worth the drive to Langley.
I will definately return here, and I recommend others try it too.
My husband and I have been a couple times, hoping for the best. And, you got it, getting worst. The service is horrible, it takes forever to get a meal, and the servers all treat you with disdain, like you are bothering them. Apparently we aren't the only people who have experienced this treatment. The only people who seemed to be enjoying themselves and getting the servers to smile were the few single guys, most who worked in the kitchen, sitting at the bar. We even had to get up to get our own cutlery, and at one point, after we saw our drinks sitting on the bar for 15 minutes, got up and retrieved them ourselves, and, we noticed several tables around us getting the same arrogant service.
We dine out a lot, and thought this would be a cool new place in Langley. Boy were we wrong. The service was so bad we left without tipping for the first time ever! My husband says we will never go back to this place, even for a drink. We wonder how the owners can be so oblivious? They put so much time and money into the decor, but, don't they read the reviews of their own restaurant?
I dined at the Waterstone over a year ago and promised I would never return, however my better half persuaded me to try again. I was amazed at the change, greeted when I entered, promptly seated by a happy and energetic hostess. Waitress came within 30 seconds, and was very pleasant (very different from my previous time at the Waterstone). What really made it exceptional (a 5 star rating) this time was the fact a manager stopped by the table and checked on us personally. Such an improvement from my last visit. He also explained there will be some drastic changes in the next couple of months. I lived in the US for several years and to see a high standard of service reminds me of my time in the US.
Keep making the improvements, and I will be back!! I can't wait for May!
So, we have been here a couple times but not often due to the price of the food for what you get, might as well go to The Keg right? At least they are consistent in what they serve and their service.
Last night, Feb 13 my husband and I were contemplating where to go for a Valentines dinner as the child was out at Grandma's house. It's a big deal for us to get out for a "nice" dinner, we settled on the Waterstone as it is close to home and we wanted to watch the Olympics. My husband called in advance and had our name put down, we arrived at the restaurant and told the hostess we would sit at the bar while we waited for our table, she was somewhat stunned looking.
Anyhow, while we waited we managed to go through 2 drinks each and 45mins when it was supposed to be a 10 minute wait. Finally, I go back to see where our table is (it was very busy, no doubt due to Valentines), she had crossed our name off the reservation list and must have expected us to eat our dinner at the bar???
So, finally we are seated and we order almost immediately. We both ordered the strip loin for $25.00, dinner came promptly. the potatoes, excellent, the tomato, great, the onion rings - ok. The meat, wouldn't feed it to my dog. Full of grissle, chewy and just over all poor quality. Could have gotten better meat at a diner. When this was brought to the attention of our waitress (in a polite way) she told us she would go and talk to the kitchen. Upon her return, we had finished our potatoes/tomato at this point, she told us that "all of the cuts of meat were the same" (personally I wouldn't advertise this given the quality), My husband pointed out it was full of grissle, she rolled her eyes and said she would go and get her manager. 15 minutes later still no manager, my husband called her over to point this out, "oh, he said just to discount it" to which we said, we are not paying $25 for a potato & tomato.
She took both meals off our bill and we left. At the end of the day, charge what your food is worth and hire some professionals if you are going to try and present yourself as an upper class establishment. I only gave it 3 stars for ambiance because of the "decor", that is it looks nice but that is it.
My wife & I went to dinner at the Waterstone on Sunday @ 5:00 pm. We walked in and there was only one other table busy. There were some folks sitting at the bar drinking who looked like they had been there a while.
We went there because my wife had been there for lunch and thought the place was quite nice. That was about it for nice.
I ordered the rib eye (med-rare) with cheddar mashed potatoes & veg. My wife ordered the salmon but asked for no rice.
I had never seen a steak served in a restaurant as thin as this one was PLUS it was way overcooked. It was the type you see in the fast fry section of the supermarket. And to top it off, they charge $28 for this meal! Can you say rip off...
I don't know where the cheddar was in the potatoes either, because I sure couldn't taste it. Plus they were so dry I had to wash them down with whatever liquid was available.
Upon bringing this to the waitress' attention, she said she would see what she could do. She came back and offered me a second steak to take home with me - that was definitely a first. She ended up discounting my meal by $11.80.
My wife's meal was delivered WITH the rice but she said her salmon was good.
Bottom line - my wife had planned (and made a reservation there for)a business dinner for eleven people - men who like to eat their steaks. After seeing my dinner, she is cancelling and taking them elsewhere.
The ambiance and decor in the restaurant was very nice, and I have no complaints about the service. The servers were friendly and prompt but that could be because the place was nearly deserted at 5:30 on a Saturday night. This should have been my first clue.
We started with the tuna crisps - nice presentation but bland. The dip was straight mayo. Next, we ordered the NY Striploin and the Steak Oscar.
Both steaks were full of gristle, stringy and chewy. No amount of peppercorn sauce could hide that it was a cheap cut and poorly cooked. It had no flavor at all.
The white cheddar mash potatoes were just ok, and the sliced tomato was 'warm' (not grilled) and no spices on it. My advice, go to the Keg and get a MUCH better meal for the same price. Very disappointing.
My husband and I went out for a late lunch here and first of all I wasn't too impressed that despite the fact that there was only one other table occupied in the dining area we got sat right next to this occupied booth. The booth ran east and west and our table for two ran north and south. It was awkward because if I even so much as lifted my menu too high I would have tickled the back of the woman sitting in the booth perpendicular to me while her husband had to constantly stare at the side of my face not three feet from him. AWKWARD! But that is not what first made me uncomfortable. As I grabbed the arms of the chair to pull myself up to the table I noticed something under the arms of the chair. Some food gunk or maybe gum...I didn't check. At least my appetite got cut in half and saved us buying an appetizer!
Upon looking around I noticed that the place hadn't been dusted in awhile. The decor is very attractive but needs to be kept up. I love the heavy woodwork and they spared no expense in even the window sills. They are very impressive. The sad part is that they had so much dust in them that I truly wanted to write "dust me" in the dust that was there. I noted when another couple came in and sat in another booth that the woman before sitting down looked down on to the seat of the booth and as she scooted, she'd swipe at the seat with her hand, scoot, swipe some more, scoot and swipe. Shouldn't this be done before you seat your customer?
The service was excellent though and the food was good. I had ordered a draught beer and they couldn't serve that to me because the machine was broken or something so I just had a bottle of their beer. Is that something that should be held against them? I don't think so this time but if it was a habit I think it's something to consider.
Overall, I felt this restaurant has fallen into disrepair. It seems to be more of a single's place than a place for a couple to go to.
I don't have any desire to go back here again even though I can't complain of the service. I just think if the place can't be dusted or the chairs and booths kept clean then what is the kitchen like?
You walk in, first reaction- "wow what a beautiful place!", as you proceed to your table, you comment.. "this is going to be great".. You sit down, great atmosphere, but wonder to yourself.. "where are the customers?"... you receive your cutlery and menu and a friendly greet. You look at the menu.. "looks diverse enough, that everyone will be happy"... " gosh i'm starving"... "where is the server?".. "this is getting stupid"... 10 minutes later.. "oh HI can I get the italian personal pizza.." the people around you order.. 45 mins later... dishes start flying out, at different times!! I was almost done my meal before my friend even received his.. not to mention it did not take much more than a few hefty bites to finish what I THOUGHT was going to be a meal. Paying merely $25 for a main and drink, I later took the change from the $30 cash, and went to subway for their five dollar footlong. Absolutely ridiculous.
We went there on a Friday evening as three couples. Had a 45min-1hour wait for a table (that's fine), so we sat in the lounge. It's got a nice decor, trying to look trendy, but it's all undone by showing UFC fights on three TVs. (Don't get me wrong, I *love* UFC, it's just not what a place that is trying to act upscale like this should be airing.) They had several tables and booths in the lounge, but nothing that could handle 6 comfortably - we had to smoosh into a booth for 4.
Dinner was expensive and disappointingly ordinary. The steaks (around $25 each), in particular, were thin and overcooked, but reasonably well-seasoned. Side dishes (szechuan green beans and cheesy mashed potatoes) were tasty, but not special. The lobster ravioli was terrific, and the appys were quite good. The server was very pleasant and very professional, with an appropriate approach for an upscale place, but forgot to bring some parts of our order.
I would not make it a point to come here again. For the high price, there are much better choices. If a group I was with ended up here again, I'd stick to appys and cocktails.
(I posted this review when the restaurant opened, it was deleted for containing links, I have removed them and am reposting)
Not good enoughWent in recently to this newly opened restaurant. Had the Double Chicken Breast entree. It came with asparagus, cherry tomatoes, and white cheddar mashed potatos. For being a grill, I expected the chicken to be a little darker, perhaps with some marks? It came unadorned, barely seasoned, just over that *is it cooked completely?* line with all of the fatty skin. Meh! When thats your main chicken dish on the menu, the best you have to offer, whats below it?And whats with not knowing what a Moscow Mule is?? Are none of you up and coming bartenders versed at all on classic drinks? The menu looked pricey for what you get, and there was no description of anything whatsoever on the menus (no telling what came with an entree, no description of any course etc..) And it seemed one looooooooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnggggggggg techno song played the whole time we were there, so that was really annoying. Hope you guys get your act together, I had high hopes for this place before it opened...
Iwent out to this resturant and I was surprised with the food...very nice and fresh. I waited at the bar and was kind of snubbed by the BArtender....When I did get my drink, he was not as attentive as I would have hoped. When I recieved my food I was happily surprised with my order...it made up for the lack of service. When I do go back I will get a table and not sit at the bar. The food saved this place for me.
As noted in my first posting about this establishment, we went back to check for consistancy.
While our first experience was excellent, this second one was a disaster.
First off, beer served in a chipped glass. When brought to the bartenders attention, it was dumped immediately, the glass trashed, and a fresh one given without problem.
Next, an appi of french onion soup. Fabulous and rich. The high point of the meal.
Next, one of us had the tortellini. Tastless, or should we say not a taste you would expect or want to repeat.
The other of us ordered the supposedly high end Italian pizza listed on the main menu. Don't repeat this mistake. I've had better tasting frozen pizza when looking for a lower end of the scale to which fresh restaurant pizza could be compared. Staff indicated that this was a new item they were trying. I suggested that they try again and hope for better results. In fairness, our bill was credited with half the cost of the pizza.
This excursion turned out to be a $59 (tax & tip in) waste of time.
Will we try again? Based on the fact that the first time was so good, we likely will.
