Bad day?
By kimp of Langley, B. C. Canada (13 Reviews)
Submitted Tuesday, January 17, 2012 - 3:15pm [Dine in]

All I can say, after hearing people rave about this place, is that I must have hit it on a bad day. Poor service, mushy rice around my roll and the nigiri was the worst I've eaten. I'd like to give them a chance to prove me wrong, but as I have a favorite place near by (that happened to be closed on the day I came here), I'm not taking the chance when i get consistently wonderful sushi at my favourite sushi haunt. No thanks. I'll pass Seh-mi.

Good sushi for the price

I have had both take out and dine in from Sehmi sushi.
I prefer take out, especially when they are busy, because the service falls behind quite significantly.
I am afaid to order anything too adventurous from this place, especially because I got BONES or fish parts in my spicy tuna roll and scales in my salmon roll. Some of the fine detail is missing.
The chefs stay back and do not really interact with the customers.
Overall the basic rolls (avocado, chicken teriyaki, salmon, california) are good and well-priced. They also have some special rolls (crazy roll) which are all pretty decent.
Overall good but not great.

reasonable sashimi

After all the rave reviews, we decided to try Seh-Mi again, having not been too impressed a year or so ago.

It's a tiny place, built out of a former drive-through fast-food kinda ting. Probably could seat 25 or so at a stretch.

Lots of people coming in for take-out at lunch time. Very busy place.

We ordered a chirashi sushi and a Seh-Mi combo....both with miso soup.

Chirashi fish was fresh....salmon, tuna, toro, snapper and surf clam. All pretty fresh, even to the point of ice crystals in some of it. The Seh-Mi combo was salmon, tuna and ebi nigiri sushi with some sashimi. Again, quite fresh.

If you are in the nieghbourhood, stop by. The quality is reasonable, and the service is prompt.

new Sehmi on Fraser Highway so much better!

This afternoon I dragged hubbie and son to the new Sehmi sushi spot several weeks after having an unsuccessful experience at the older location. After having our usual miso soups, we ordered the squid tempura which was incredible for calamari lovers. Yes it was deep fried and a bit greasy, but the portion, freshness and taste surpassed that. We ordered the tokyo roll which is tuna and salmon sashimi with yam tempura inside a roll which sits on top of a sweet & spicy sauce, so good. My son ordered the salmon combo which looked like sockeye salmon and very fresh. Also ordered was a calamari roll, an eel roll and a negitoro roll all very good. Tea was served and replenished and service was friendly. We are definitely returning to the new Sehmi very soon.

Yes that's right a sushi restaurant with good sized portions that also don't lackj for quality.Family run hole in the wall that's moving. They always have a steady flow of customers and I'm sure that it's because of the quality and quantity. I can only hope that when they move to their new digs they don't loose what has made them good. Great friendly place to eat.

From the looks of the original restaurant on the corner of 56th and 203 you wouldn't expect such good food! The prices are reasonable, the food is delicious, and the staff are super nice. The best sushi I have had in Langley for sure. I haven't tried the new restaurant by the pricesmart yet, but I assume that it will be just as good, just possibly with a little more ambience.

Good Japanese 'hole in the wall' type place
By MisterPotatoeHead of Port Moody, BC (3 Reviews)

This is one of those hole in the wall type places that offers good Japanese food. The sumono salad is large, and the the serving sizes for our bento box b and sushi combo was quite generous compared to other Japanese places. Taste wise, I was not disappointed.

In terms of ambiance, it looks like the restaurant use to be a diner. Its a small cozy feeling, seating maybe 20 or so people at most. I came on a Friday evening at 7:30pm and it only had about 12 people in there.

There seems to be a lot of take out orders, and the clientele seemed to be more causal - jeans t-shirt kind of place.

Might not be a great place for a first date since there kinda have old chairs, and dirty chair pillows lying on top of the chairs... and you can see the garbage can from the eating area.

But it does have that 'home' messy feeling if you're after something more down to earth.

Overall, a good experience. I'd go there again if I were in Langley.

Very good sushi, great value

This sushi place is very very good. I would say it's in the top 5 sushi restaurants I have been to out of about 20 in the GVRD, and it's a fraction of the price of any of the other great sushi spots. A lunch combo with sashimi is like $8, that's hard to beat for fresh fish! The dinner menu would be more like $15 but honestly it's so much food, I usually get an extra soup and salad and we share the dinner box. If you eat their often they'll usually give you freebies to try new things once they recognize you.

It doesn't look like much from the outside and it's pretty tight inside but very clean and warm.

The best Japanese!
By candd of Langley (7 Reviews)

This is my #1 Japanese restaurant! I go there frequently for my sushi fix.
The food is great. Rolls all taste good, except they aren't very large. I always get the chicken teriyaki dinner box. The chicken is ok, but it usually has too much skin, not enough meat and lately has been pretty dry. Lots of sprouts! Which are sooo good. The fried veggies and shrimp are all great. Sunomo is good. And sticky rice is perfect.

We always get free miso soup and tea. Whether we order a big meal or small snack.

The staff is nice and friendly. One lady there recognizes us everytime and knows exactly what we order...the only problem I have is that we always ask for water and they never bring it! So we ask again and they eventually do. But it seems like they don't want to give us the water? Its really strange...

The restaurant itself is really tiny and looks dumpy from the outside. Decor inside isn't too delightful either, but it doesnt look like they put an effort into making it look better than it used to.

I love this place and will continue to return for years to come.

I happened to be in Langley one day and decided to have dinner here since I heard good things about this place. I was with my family and my mom particularly liked her sashimi rice w/ vegetables and spicy sauce (forgot the name of the dish), which looked really good. I liked my bento box, it was very well presented with a lot of variety! The california rolls included in the bento box were good, but not great, though. Service was top-notch, with all the waitresses being really friendly and courteous. Ambiance is so-so, but really, the food and service and price pretty much outweighs it by far. Overall, I would highly recommend this place to anyone who's looking to eat in Langley (but not sure if I'd like to drive out just for the food).

Possibly the best sushi spot!

This is definitely one of the best Japanese restaurants I have ever been to - no, scratch that, it's the best! The food is absolutely amazing; huge portions for hard-to-beat prices. The seafood is nice and fresh, and the bento box dinners are a great bargain.

Service is very, very friendly. The waitresses always make sure your cup of tea is full. If you're a regular, you'll get seafood dishes on the house. Every time my family goes there, we get a complimentary sushi dish that looks like it has a $10+ value. Everyone in the restaurant is polite. Whenever someone leaves, they get a jovial good-bye, sometimes accompanied by a bow by one particular waitress.

The decor could use a little work, however, but that may be because the restaurant is quite small, with about 9 tables total. The ambiance is nice, cosy, and very welcoming. A great family restaurant.

I've been to Seh-Mi at least two dozen times, and I will continue to eat here well until I'm old and grey.

Every time I've gone to Seh-Mi for pick up or to stay and eat it's been bang-on. Food is excellent and you get a huge amount for an average (or below) price. The spider roll is to die for here! The seafood box is also a killer deal.

Service is always super friendly and prompt. Most people will pass up this place because isn't much more than a shack that you can hardly tell if it's in business or not. I like the inside, small but cozy and everyone always seems happy to be there.

You'll leave happy, full and with some cash still left in your wallet!

best sushi spot I know

Submitted Wednesday, November 22, 2006 - 3:09pm [Dine in]

This little stand-alone restaurant looks like its about to fall apart, but the food is amazing. I have not heard one complaint from friends or family about the quality of the sushi here. They are generous and give huge portions. Once the owners recognize you, they will bring complimentary new dishes for you to try. I tried going on a Saturday night once, but couldn't, because it was jam packed, with a line out the door.

This summer, I was hesistant about taking a Japanese friend visiting from Miyazaki to the restaurant, but afterwards, she mentioned that it was better than some sushi they get in Japan!!

The only criticism I have is that the location isn't the greatest and you wonder how they can survive in such a sketchy neighbourhood, but people seem to be willing to travel for good quality sushi/japanese food and Sehmi delivers every time.
