The focus at The Fat Cow and Oyster Bar is on fresh, local ingredients, with an emphasis on using different cuts of meat. The unique raw oyster selection and gourmet entreés are complimented with a sommelier chosen wine list, as well as an extensive selection of beer and cocktails.
Went here to celebrate a quiet bday. The location is off the beaten path and if you were not paying attention, you most likely pass it. It is located in a strip mall and does not seem to pretty at first till you go in. The decor is modern and reminds me of Milestone lounge type restaurant. That is where the comparison ends. The ambiance is brighter than the lounge type restaurant which is great as I want to see what I am eating. We ordered two cooked oysters, one had crumbled cheese and the other I believe was the "Fat Cow" or something like that relating to the restaurant. Both cooked oysters were delicious. We also ordered the shrimp/crab cake and the octopus appies. Both appies were very tasty and fresh. I ordered the 1lb mussels in a white wine cream sauce served over 3 slices of bread, my better half ordered the Fried chicken and waffles. Both dishes came out hot and fresh. My better half had 4 large pieces of chicken (leg, thigh, breast and wing) over 4 average size waffles. The syrup and the freshness was excellent. Mine 1lb of mussels was also very tasty. Original thought the sauce should have been more, but the amount ended up just right. I wished the bread was toasted with some garlic butter (in my opinion) but it just came out unbutter. I guess it was not to take away the tasted from the white wine sauce. We talked to the host/waitress and found out that the majority of all the products were from BC. From the organic chicken to the onions in the white wine sauce was local. Thus helps out the local farmers. The price was on the steeper side but was well worth it. I would not say that I would eat here all the time, but for special occasions or a night out, I would definitely return. I was impressed with the service as they kept my water full and was willing to answer any questions asked upon them. Will highly recommend and return.
My wife and I thought we would try something new as we don't like chain restaurants. Arrived at the Fat Cow at about 7:30 pm. First thing you notice is that it is in a store front with one of those cheezy "open" signs in the window. Once inside it was better but felt warehouse like with high painted black ceilings and exposed ducts. But hey, we were there for the food.
We were greeted and asked if we had reservations, which we did not. We were made to feel as though this were a problem, but there were multiple tables vacant and were seated promptly.
Well we finally got to ordering food. The menu is a bit limited and a bit pricey. I initially ordered the beef burger for $16. but was told (at 8pm) that they were sold out (huh?), so I ordered the sirloin steak. My wife ordered Mussels with warm bread. While waiting, staff were great with keeping water glasses filled.
The food arrived and the presentation was okay. I ordered my steak medium rare, it was medium ish and was the size of a candy bar. Potatoes were over done and vegetables under cooked. My wife's mussels came. The sauce was good, mussels were well prepared, although of the 14 mussels, two were unopened. No bread came. Server waited until we were done until checking in at the table. We asked about the bread and she stated they ran out. Like you couldn't tell us when we ordered? No offer to reconcile the problem.
At this point I was a bit disappointed and just wanted out. Paid my over priced meal and left....hungry. Went to the local pub and we enjoyed a well prepared, reasonably priced, filling meal.
Save your money, there are many better restaurants in the area.
I have to first say that this restaurant is in a weird location a strip mall that is half empty and in an industrial area but once you walk in that is all forgotten about. what a comfortable and cute room my only negative would have to be is the front wait area could be spruced up a bit to make it more welcoming. We dined in on Saturday to listen to the live music and it was amazing the young lady talked to us after her sets and we can't wait till she is back. We would defiantly make the trip back for her. We had mussels to start in a bacon and beer broth and everything was local which was really cool to see. We talked to the young lady serving and everything down to the onions were picked here in our own neighbourhood... Very cool. As a main we enjoyed to steaks one with blue cheese crust and one with some shrimp again all local and the meat was cooked perfect. An older Italian gentlemen made our wine choice for us and it paired with the meal perfectly we opted out for dessert but next time we will make sure we have room because they sounded amazing. Again thank you everyone at the FCOB for an amazing evening and can't wait till we can come back again!
