Still Looking for Some Good BBQ.

After indulging in numerous BBQ restaurants in Texas and the southern parts of the US, I've been keeping an eye out for authentic BBQ places like Boonie's. I was excited to try this place, but ended up a bit disappointed.

Came here with my girlfriends on a week night. To start with, three side items we wanted to order were not available: collard greens, cornbread, and mac n' cheese. My pulled pork sandwich was ok, but lacked the southern "oomph" I was looking for. There was really no difference between this pulled pork vs. the one I can make in my slow cooker at home, or vs. any other restaurant. My friend's cajun chicken burger was "just alright" and a bit dry. The rest of my friends' dishes were reported to be passable but comparable to a cafeteria and not really interesting at all.

The prices are reasonable, but for the quality of food received, I'd say the value isn't really worth it.

My bf still really wants to try Boonie's so I'll probably give them another chance. Hopefully Boonie himself will be at the helm this time and make things right!

Kids menu okay, rest of food disappointing

We were out in Langley for a prior engagement and I had decided to check out dinehere.ca for some decent grub in the area.

Unfortunately, I did not have as good experience as I would have liked.

The restaurant is located in the Quality Inn. I found the tables and general interior to be a bit sparse. Yes, they had some southern kitch here and there, but hard tables, hard chairs, hard floor. I don't know - it just wasn't particularly warm or inviting.

We ended up sitting outside on the patio. Resin table and resin chairs. Patio umbrella. It wasn't particularly inviting - but the weather was warm and the patio seemed more relaxed than the restaurant interior.

The server was friendly and prompt. No complaints about the service. It was good.

The children each had the southern mac and cheese. It came with a corn muffin. The mac and cheese was good. Definately several notches above Kraft Dinneresque stuff served at other restaurants. The corn muffin was quite tasty too.

Hubby had the jambalaya. It was good. I found the shrimp a tad overcooked, but it was fairly solid.

The disappointment was with the ribs. I ordered a full rack (intending to share some with the rest of the family). I guess I was expecting the rack to be freshly grilled or possibly bbq'd. It looked and tasted like it was pressure cooked and then drenched in sauce. Wet Wet Wet.

I have had much, much better ribs at Tony Romas, Dix and even The Cellar in Vancouver. These ribs were just yucky. There was no value at all with the $24.95 price tag on these sloppy things.

It was really too bad. The kids meals were good and were excellent value. The service was very good. If the ribs were up to snuff - I would return if in the area.

The ribs were quite sub-standard and I will not visit again.

Some big hits, some not so much.

Been here twice as well as back in the old location. The one in the curling rink. So the new one is in a hotel. We've had Southern/soul food down ... well, south. Maybe not that far south, but maybe close enough. The best places were in an abandoned gas station and in the back of a biker bar, so a "proper" place could be anywhere. The more unexpected, the better :-)
In some sense, this isn't as good because it's a clean, decent place.

Pulled pork was great as well as jambalaya. Would the new place measure up?
Well, the catfish was darn good. The corn bread was pretty good as well (but to be honest, if you know what you're doing corn bread is pretty easy, surprising how many places mess it up). The sides are to be expected, which may or may not be a good thing depending on your tastes.
We tried pretty much all the other main stuff on the menu. The best is still the catfish and the pecan pie. I don't know where he gets the pecan pie from, maybe it's just from another store. Don't care, because it was pretty amazing. Would go just for that.
The disappointment, which I have to agree with the rest of the reviewers, is the ribs. I mean, they're decent. But not as good as they used to be. I was already suspicious the first trip to the new place because there was no sign of the smoker and no smell of it. The ribs by themselves wouldn't be worth the trip out there.
I don't necessarily blame him, it's kind of hard to have a smoker going "full time" when you're located in a hotel.

Worth a trip I say, just because this type of food is hard to find in GVRD. But I think Boonie needs to do something about the BBQ ... or the location. It's still good, but not as good as before I think.

Mediocre is probably the best way to describe our dinner. Nothing we ordered would ever be considered either outstanding or even southern or soul ....... it was just like cafeteria food served with BBQ sauce.

David Boxcar Gates ........ your whole schtick is sort of homeade ...... made out of bicycle and lampshade parts and not very southern either - just sort of tinny and over the top loud for the 'everything hard surface' room you're playing in.

In all fairness the young lady waiting on us did very well for what she had to work with.

Don't mean to be harsh but many improvements to both the menu and surroundings will have to be made to make *Boonie's* a destination dining-out treat.

Pulled Pulled Pulled Pulled Pork.

I like pulled pork. No, scratch that, I love pulled pork. I love it enough that it may deserve the all-caps-and-exclamation-mark treatment.

If I could make it at home, I might. Maybe if I bought a smoker, put it on my tiny apartment patio, and spent some time learning how to use it, I could produce for myself a solid pulled pork sandwich over the course of about 8 hours of hard, salty labour.

Or, you know, I could just go to Boonie's. The PULLED PORK! sandwich is pretty damn good. The best I've had in a restaurant in B.C., at least. ( Admittedly, the other alternatives I've tried are ABC, a casino buffet, and Memphis Blues, but those were all terrible for one reason or another. )

It's located in ... a Quality Inn... in a Home Depot parking lot. Not a great location. Boonie is friendly, though, and the live music really gives the place a 'feel'.

Me and my friend went, he had the ribs, I had the pulled pork. I've tried the ribs before - they're pretty good, but they're no PULLED PORK! Also? There were... yam fries? I think they were yam fries. Okay, they were okay, kinda spicy, but a side note, next to the PULLED PORK! I also had a sweet pie. It was like a pumpkin pie, but filled with something that wasn't pumpkin. Not sure exactly what it was. Yam again, maybe? It was good. I'd have another yam pie.

Well, long-and-ultimately-pointless-story-short, the next time the PULLED PORK! craving strikes, I'll probably head to Boonie's. Or, you know, invest a ton of money in a smoker.

Take out Disaster
By P. Westbroek of Langley (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, June 29, 2010 - 8:52am [Dine in]

I know a group on Facebook that went to Boonies for a Birthday party dinner but didn't ask them for their opinion. The appeal of southern food was enough of a lure and being only a few blocks from my home sold the deal.

The new location is the only location I had been to and it was very nice. Only a couple of guests but again it is a new location.

I ordered ribs, pulled pork sandwich and honey wings for my family.

The quantity was decent but the taste was off. The ribs were not "fall off the bone", they were dry and the sauce was much too sweet. The pulled pork sandwich was dry and not juicy at all. The wings were "ok" but definitely nothing to write home about, and definitely not up to southern fare I have tried at other establishments.

The food didn't sit well and upset my stomach and I was burping it up the rest of the night (I am being very polite here).

I will definitely not revisit.
