Local pub in the Brookswood area that locals go to. Lots of TV's a pool table, Kino, pull tabs, and karaoke on Friday nights. Liquor store is open from 9 am to 11 pm with a drive through
We were going to be in the Langley area on Monday, and searched around this site for a pub we hadn't tried.
The Artful Dodger was near the top of the list, and the ratings were good. Off we went, south, south, south on 200th.
We arrived just around noon, and it was quiet. A few motorbikes, a few pickups, no horses...
The server greeted us promptly, got our drinks and left us to sort through the (very large) menu. The Other Half decided on beef and Guinness stew served in a giant Yorkshire pud, and I was intrigued by the prime rib sandwich. Not sliced leftovers, I was told, but a single piece of prime rib. I asked if it was possible to get it rare or medium rare. No problem. Gravy on the side instead of over it? No problem.
The food came in good time, and it was steaming hot. The one problem... the "rare to med-rare" prime rib was VERY well done. When the server came back to check, I did mention that well done was not anywhere near med-rare in my mind. She looked at it, agreed, came back with a plate and removed the bread and meat.. She came back just minutes later with another plate, another piece of meat freshly-grilled. She was very cheerful and very charming about the whole issue. Unfortunately, "rare" doesn't seem to be possible in that kitchen. It was well-done again. I gave up and ate it. When the server checked again, she asked to see the meat. "Oh no...!" She seemed genuinely concerned. I told her, no worries, I would eat it since it didn't seem likely I was going to get the meat done rare. This is a pub, after all, not Gotham's steak house...!
The premises were a little older, but clean and comfortable. Staff was very friendly and obliging. Salads were fresh and crisp, fries were hot and crisp. The stew was pronounced excellent. Pale ale was from a fresh keg, and perfect.
Not a young, hipster clientele, so the O.H. and I fit in nicely. I would go back
One word to describe this place, different. This is in the heart of Brookswood where there are a lot of farmers, ranchers, and other cow pokes. Not a country bar by any means but it has a rustic look and feel to it seeing that there are motor bikes and horses parked in the same area, yes there is a post to tie your horse to in case you ride there on one.
The pub has a cozy remote cabin feel to it, nice fireplace, comfy chairs and tables, old book cases and rustic pictures and paintings. There is what my friends call the "Knights of the round table" there as it is a large oval like table that can hold around eight people I think but if you want it be there early.
Patrons are hard working farmers, trades people, and average joe's who grab a bite to eat, have a beer and talk b.s. about their work day. Older crowd which is nice so there aren't any young people acting foolish here causing problems.
Service here is great as the waitresses are the more old school, the "don't like it hun? kiss my grits" attitude. They are fast, prompt, and remember who you are if you come here on a regular basis.
Food you get here are generous portions, nachos were mountain high, fish and chips were big and not greasy, and the sandwiches are great.
If you go on a Friday night for karaoke be there early to get a table as the palce fills up quickly. There is one older fellow who sings there we call "Chester" he is a great singer and has great audience appeal , he also serenades the ladies both young and old. My only beef is that the younger people (19-23) go up there drunk and make an attempt to sing which kills the mood.
But if you want great good, service, and a good time go to the Artful Dodger Pub
My hubby and I went here for lunch last month. It really is quite a drive from where we live, but a pleasant drive on a sunny afternoon. We sat on the patio and I really appreciated the ambience with all of the flowers. I had the schnitzel burger and hubby tried the beef dip. He said his was tasty but complained to me that the beef hadn't been cut properly. My scnitzel burger was really good....makes me want to go back just the try the schnitzel dinner. Portions were large and my caesar salad was well dressed. Will definitely go back....but probably only during patio season.
Have been to the Dodger quite a few times as we live in the vicinity. The service is great - prompt and friendly. The servings are huge and the food is good - pretty standard pub fare. The only complaint I have is that the décor is pretty sad. Although I am aware they are trying to create a warm and homey atmosphere, that does not need to include filthy carpets with the pile worn off and dirty upholstery with holes. I really think the owners need to do a bit of a makeover in order to ensure patrons keep returning.
We arrived here for lunch on a weekend and the place was jumping. Lots of bikers, sports teams, pensioners and folks with coupons like us. We enjoyed the food and the free meat draw. It has a warm, welcoming atmosphere. There were a dozen beautiful motor cycles parked outside and lots of leather clad riders inside. The waitress was kept busy with big tables so service could have been better. I had the steak and kidney pie with fries it was fantastic. We would certainly come here again.
I used to ride my atv to this pub when i lived a few blocks away. It was quicker to drive threw the bushes.
Very laid back place and they have the biggest pub menu i have ever seen and i dont think there is one thing that is not good.
Not a place to go if you want to party as its more of a older folks bullshittin and tippin a few before going home.
My husband and I went out for lunch one week and thought we would drive till we saw the first restaurant. We bumped into it first and were glad. The place looked great. The service was friendly and had us laughing so hard sometimes. The food was great we enjoyed it a lot. The portions were perfect. We loved that we could watch the games on tv or just sit and relax. We will most defintly be going back again. It was a great experience.
We have lived in Langley for 4 years now, and end up at the Dodger once a month or so. We live just down the street. Unfortunately the food is just not good. Omelets that were raw in the middle, veal cutlet that looked and tasted like an overcooked hockey puck.... It's so disappointing to my husband and I since we are so close to the pub, we would love to dine there once a week because of the convenience. We try to make sure we've eaten before going up for a drink. The lady manager is so miserable, heaven help you if you ask for the music or tv to be turned down! On the other hand the service is great most of the time. I don't know who wrote the other reviews, but I think they must be friend's of the owners!
For you who havent tried this yet.. please try it. It is out of my way but I was in Langley visiting someone. so we headed down. Its basically a casserole type western joint. Try the fried battered chicken cutlet on top of egg fried rice, with Cream sauce and cheese and onions. I think this is the main reason locals go to Artful Dodger.
Since then I felt I should be back there 2 times a day LOL. We came between 5-6pm oand a draft was $6.50 for a large portion. Small is $5.50 but it is still big! Add 50 cents if u want nuts in a jar..
I enjoyed the Burger and Fries deal on Tuesday for my first time--fantastic! i couldn't believe that i could get a decent (if not delicious) burger AND fries for $5!
The service was great and the atmosphere was fun. It was pretty busy but we found seats right away and were able to watch the end of the Canucks' game (shoot-out win!).
Next time i go to the Dodger, I think i'll be brave and sit at the bar--it's a gorgeous bar and there's sure to be plenty of interaction with the bartender, servers and other customers. What a great neighbourhood pub!
My hubby and I rode our horses to the Dodger when we lived closer, and put them in the pen they have there.
We both had the beef stroganoff and it was fantastic. They even put a good sized dollop of sour cream right in the middle of each dish. We ate, and then juggled take-home containers of stroganoff while jogging our horses down the road. The portions are so good, there usually will be leftovers to take home. Next time though, we will drive, as it's not a challenge to juggle containers in a car. Great food, great place.
The staff are the greatest, the food is good, the ambience of the pub is the nicest that I've been in. I don't usually like pubs but I feel comfortable even going in by myself. This is OUR pub and absolutely love the friends we've met there. The service is very good and recommend it to other people. They have meat draws and dollar draws that we've won many times. Join us and have fun!
