We've held several business get-togethers at the Mekong and found the staff and the food very satisfactory. Loved the noodle nest and fried banana dessert. Their lunch menu is great and quick for on the go healthy foods. Lots of parking and spacious dining. I would recommend The Mekong to anyone who is staying at the adjecent hotel or a local wanting something different in the area.
...of the worst food a place has to offer.
Nothing special. You can tell from the decor that it was once a western restaurant and the owners did not bother renovating.
Let me start out by saying that I've had some bad Chinese food before, but this one tops the list. We ordered beef chow mien and sweet and sour chicken. The beef chow mien was unbearably salty, even for me who enjoys salty dishes. It was prepared as if left overs were just thrown into one plate since there was an uneven proportion of noodles and meat. We returned the dish after barely touching it. That was the first time in my life I returned a dish back since I usually I just "deal" with it.
The sweet and sour sauce and pineapple tasted bland, the meat was as tough as rubber that I literally had jaw pains the next morning. Obviously it was frozen meat. Even the rice was tough and "dirty" looking as if they did not wash it before cooking (or microwaving as we heard one beep).
The only semi-positive thing about this whole ordeal was the service. The waitress was polite and accommodating.
The bill came to a total of $16 with tip, which amounts to just the barely edible sweet and sour chicken and rice. Worst $16 I have ever spent. I should have listened to my instincts and went for mall food which would have tasted a lot better.
Pros: The waitress waived the bill for the chow mein
Cons: everything else. I can also imagine how their kitchen (nightmares) looks like
If you venture out to Kelowna, stay away from this place. I was almost tempted to tell the owner to be ashamed of themselves for passing their food as Chinese! 1030 Harvey will be forever embedded in my mind.
