I went in tonight for take-out and the food was wonderful! Very fresh, healthy and authentic. The ambiance is a little lacking if your looking for a full on sit down dinner but the food totally makes up for it. This is a little local treasure if your looking for a great lunch or a quick take out dinner.
My husband and I love seafood, so when our fifth wedding anniversary came around we decided to celebrate at Pescatores, and we were not disappointed! The food was delicious as was the bottle of wine we ordered, and the ambiance is very romantic too. We started with an oyster taster which allowed us to try three different flavors which was great. I love trying as many different things as possible on the menu, so share plates and appies are my favorite thing. We also had the crab cakes and prawn scampi...so delicious! We will definitely be back to celebrate another anniversary!
Considering the options of where we can eat in a restaurant filled city, this was the last time we'll set foot in Azuma...There's just too many other good\great places to go and last nights dining experience was a waste of time and money...very poor service and below average food\sushi...we have gone to Azuma many times in the past but ever since it's expansion it has gradually lost it's appeal as "A Place To Go"...the appy's (Gyoza & Veggi Tempura) served luke warm at best and quite greasy...would have sent em back but was too hungry to wait another 20 minutes for food...Nigiri sushi was bland and not even worth the special price of 99cents...when we mentioned our displeasure regarding the food and service to the manager she said several times she was so happy that we voiced our concerns and followed with "Now how would you like to pay"...well, we paid and left zero tip and will never part with any more of our hard earned dollars to Azuma...considering the options...
Visited for a romantic celebration. Food generally was good and ambience quite good as it is newly renovated. However, half way through our meal the waiter booked off. We waited for at least 15 minutes before having to get up and search out someone else to serve.
Found sharp bones in both the salmon sashimi and the tuna nigiri.
Apologies from the manager, but did not seem very sincere. We were given a free item worth about 5% of the meal. I would not recommend this restaurant.
I went to Jack's Place with a group of friends and had a great time. The food was delicious ( i love the spinach and artichoke dip!) and the staff was very friendly. It was a great night and I would definitely recommend this restaurant. I will be going back very soon!
Have been coming here every time we visit Victoria.... but now will remove this restaurant from our list. Both my husband and I had stomach problems after our meals. the meat balls and veal were over cooked, not flavourful, almost as if they had been sitting around, not made fresh. This time it was not worth the wait in the line up outside in the rain.
What can we say about The Fernwood Inn? Well first of all, it's my local - I always feel like a VIP when I come in here, whether it is just for a sneaky pint, impressing some out of town guests or out with my special girl. The food is par excellence when it comes to pub fare and I know that they make almost absolutely everything "Inn" house (LOL!). Definitely not your typical neighbourhood pub. I also love the vibe - it's really quite varied, from the well-heeled theatre crowd, to uni students, to yuppies, to hipsters to working class - you get everything there. Really the definition of community. In fact, I think I'll head over there right now for a sneaky pint! :)
Apart from under cooked shrimp, miss labelled food, and frozen pie, my family including my Grandma, little sister, and special need sister were yelled and snapped at by not one but two employees while the owner stood there and watched. Needless to say GOLDEN DRAGON I am sickened and you have just lost a lot of customers. Congratulations :)
Last weekend we took friends who were visiting from Vancouver to The Oyster Bar for some late afternoon drinks. The buck a shuck experience was great and the waitress really knew her stuff. The afternoon turned to dinner and we finally rolled out of there about 5 hours and six dishes later. Our friends told us the oyster was the best attraction in Victoria.
What a great decor. I recently returned to Pescatores after a long absence. I had forgotten how cool the decor was. Walking in was like seeing an old friend. As busy as it was, our server managed to have or dinners to us in perfect time and we were never left wanting. As far as the meals went, my memory was was instantly refreshed to the solid quality and obvious cooking experience infused in our dinners. I won't wait so long until my next visit.
You'll think you traveled back in time only because of the price!
The food is absolutely lovely here and at the best price you will find in Victoria for Fish and chips! I would definitely rate this as one the best values for your dollar in the city (and I've been everywhere to find out)
I can't stand paying for fish and finding it to be mostly greasy batter, but that isn't a problem here. You will will get nice light batter and THICK fish meat. The fries taste as they should and the homemade tartar sauce is also rather delicious! The oysters are also fresh and battered in store, unlike too many other places.
The friendly, homey service is also refreshing in a time when being processed is closer to the treatment you get at most places. No sullen teenagers banging out the food as fast as they can here! The attention to detail and delicious food at an excellent price, this is why they have survived as long as they have
For the first time since the renovations we went to Old British Fish and Chips on Pandora in Victoria tonight - needless to say we will not be returning to this establishment. The new gluten free menu was well stated, but the waitress neglected to inform us that would mean a difference in the taste of the product. My husband took two bites out of his fish and sent it back, informing the waitress that he was not happy and did not like the taste. At the end of the meal, he approached the waitress at the till expecting that there would be some kind of credit on the bill for the unpalatable meal. He was shocked to see a full charge for all meals at the table and politely asked her to remove the price of the fish as he had not eaten it (he was happy to pay for the fries). The waitress was very friendly and my husband suggested that she may have to get the manager for this.
At this time a cook came out from the kitchen, did not identify herself as to her capacity in the business and began verbally attacking my husband and myself. The cook began pointing out (in an aggressive manner) the gluten free signs up everywhere, to which we pointed back that it may have to fall back on the waitress to mention that gluten free meant a different taste than the familiar fish and chips. The cook continued to be belligerent yelling and accosting us verbally, finally turned and waved her hand muttering deduct their bill. I said to the waitress at this point that we would not be back, and would make sure to inform others of this poor service referring to the cook in the back and her treatment of us. The cook yelled from the kitchen that this was rude, and continued on with her verbal assault. During the banter, my husband informed her that he had eaten in this restaurant many times over the past 30 years and had never had fish like this. The cook replied back by attacking the previous owners and saying that he would have gotten food poisoning from the previous owners (not true - never happened).
We continued to pay the bill, which was credited for the price of his meal and the cook continued on with her verbal onslaught as we did. In the process we apologized to the waitress who was stuck in the middle (physically and I am sure emotionally as well) and left her a tip. As we left the cook continued on with her rude and haughty attitude, my husband replied with a hand slap on the counter and informed the cook that her behavior had earned her a letter to the better business bureau. The cook continued on with the verbal barrage as we left the establishment.
At the end of it all, our nice meal out ended with: huge drama; an upset stomach for my husband; some Tums and another meal prepared at home. We are left questioning... does gluten free really mean customer service free as well?
I am sure they are trying to do something new and reach a certain clientele, but verbally assaulting the clientele that does come into your establishment is not going to win you any customers. In the end would I NOT NOT NOT recommend this place. The treatment given tonight was unwarranted and completely uncalled for. Whoever this cook is - needs to take some classes in customer service, which is one menu item this restaurant is sadly missing.
I just have to say... I miss Old British Fish and Chips... good bye old friend.
Oregano's just opened up in Shelbourne plaza and are we ever happy it did! The pizza is fantastic!! Tried it on a whim a few months ago and haven't ordered pizza from anywhere else since! It really is that good! We have ordered take out and have also picked up pizza by the slice while running errands at the plaza.
The staff is super friendly and the Sunday to Wednesday pick up deal is perfect. And though I haven't tried them I've been told by the staff that the desserts are homemade by the owners mom!
My husband and I love this locally owned coffe shop! Great for dining in and even great for take out. We have often called ahead and ordered take out omlettes and they are fantastic! Yes take out omlettes!!
I also love love love the muffins and scones which are made on site daily! Delicious!!!
A great spot with great staff!
We always get take out and we always get the menu sampler for 2 and we always enjoy it!! Very tasty and a good value!!
We have not dined in but hear it is a good experience.
Even for take out, the food tastes fresh and is always hot!!
Portion size of the sampler is perfect for 2 people.
I have been to Azuma many times and always enjoyed the food. However, tonight I found a fingernail clipping in my miso soup... I actually pulled it out of my mouth when I felt something hard. To say the least I was disgusted. The manager came to talk to me and assured me that this was "a rare occurrence" and offered to void the $2.25 miso soup off my bill and give me 10% of my meal. Needless to say I left, my meal was 10 dollars so a 3.25 discount was absolutely ridiculous. What disturbed me the most though was that the manager ADMITTED that the cook had been cutting his nails in the back and apologized!!! I know this sounds too absurd to be true but it is, I filed a complaint with the health authorities and will never be going back. The way it was dealt with was almost as horrifying as the fact that neither the waiter nor the manager seemed to be phased by the fact that there was a finger nail in the soup... not a hair that falls in by accident but a piece of nail! I can't even imagine what goes on in that kitchen.
I was excited when i looked over and seen a DONAIR shop (always ) in ESQ VIC.
I am from out of town and thought i might try it out . I have eaten at literally 20-30 different Donair shops All over the world and this one is by far THE worst.I really do not like putting in a BAD review but come on now.
1-The 1st impression of this place when you walk in is..drab -dirty and abused..but i usually overlook that if the food is good.
2-The actual Donair rotisserie was dripping with Grease and looked over done and it was, with no flavor or seasoning to the actual meat its self, when i ate my donair it was like leather pieces wrapped in a pita.
3-I ordered mine to go and The older lady working there had no respect for customers nor the the preparation it seemed, She talked on her Cell phone and tossed around the pitas like frisbees while customers were standing patiently waiting!
4-I asked for the Tzatziki sauce and some House made hot sauce..I got no HOt sauce on it and the so called tzatziki sauce was bland with no flavor it actually tasted like dill for some reason.
5-I stood there for 20 minutes waiting and hoping to have waited for a good donair..not here .
6-Rotten brown lettuce ..mmm love that too.
Although the prices here are average ..the food is way below avg and people who are giving this place a reasonably good review are lets say "OUT TO- LUNCH" and do not know what a REAL Donair aka Shawerma really is .
This place should be inspected by the health board and needs to step up the flavor and service bigtime!
Either that or just pack it in and stop waiting peoples time and $ .
I mean come on now this is not obviously a Goumet meal nor is it hard to make ..but there are standards.
I am a big believer in little side shops like this and am ashamed to know that Victoria is accepting this as good!
Cheers and enjoy the rain -yours truly -MR T
I purchased a Groupon for Labelle on Monday and attempted to redeem it today (Wednesday). The Groupon did not have a redeem after date listed, so I assumed that I could redeem it anytime. When I got to La Belle, they informed me that they would not be accepting any Groupons until Friday. I told them that there was no redeem after date listed on the Groupon, and they told me that "Groupon forgot to put it on." They then told me I was about the 50th customer they turned away that day. I drove 20 minutes there only to be turned away hungry. Very poor business choices on the behalf of La Belle's management. Will refund Groupon and never return.
Been going for years. Time to step it up here Fernwood Inn. After all, you do have the responsibility of residing in the square, in the heart of one of Vic's funkiest, creative, hip neighbourhoods.
Food has been good, and has just a few times changed, but needs some passion, creativity, and quality upgrading. I realise you dip into slightly...responsible and healthy menu/ingredient choices, but how about an entire commitment to ingredients that are local/organic/responsible/sustainable/healthy?? Really, to be the main establishment in Fernwood and not serving up wicked organic salads, local/sustainable seafood, island raised crap-free ethical happy meat, organic egg breakfast/brunches, and a good selection of local microbrews, spirits and wines...is fairly lame. Sorry. Step it up.
Ethical and healthy meat is an easy and big step. So are vegetables..especially around Fernwood.
Fernwood lager is an embarrassment. The rest of the selection is rather poor, with some of your main selections from Vancouver... and I dare to mention mass-produced molson/labatt beer?
Victoria is screaming with micro-brews these days.
C'mon guys, I want to frequent this great pub location, but will continue to visit not so often if you keep up the neutal effort.
The server gave us nice pleasant service. However, it was overpriced, the meat dishes were lacking flavour (which for a "southern cookshack" is not a good sign, no mashed potatoes!!, and...horrible lighting, needs better ambience, design, table layout. Overall we were not impressed. I have heard from others the same, and we won't be back until some effort is made to make some needed changes.
