Barb's Place Fish & Chips310 St. Lawrence Street, Victoria
Staple Fish & Chip Joint
By VicGal of Victoria BC (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, January 6, 2012 - 5:15pm [Take-out]

Barb's gets a visit from us at least 2-3 times per year, mainly in the summer months. Good change of pace to eat outside, on the docks, and be out on the beautiful Victoria waterfront.

We always get the same thing: 1 or 2 pc Halibut with Fries

Sometimes my husband & I will share a 2-pc Halibut & Fries because we're not keen on so many fries. It's about $17 or $18 for this, so very reasonable to share & plenty of food for both. Sometimes we've ordered a side of coleslaw when sharing. Our vegetarian daughter can get a veggie burger there too.

We like Barb's...you go there partly for the fish, partly for the fun of eating out on the docks.

NOTE: In the busy summer months it can be difficult to find a table, especially when the cruise ships are in. You have the pager & the wait for your food, so often times you can mill around & nab a table in the meantime (but you have to be aware & quick!)

I really enjoy the layout of this place. It has an old English pub feel, with low ceilings, many cozy snugs, and a wooden decor. It's only competition that way was Vancouver's Jolly Taxpayer (now sadly destroyed) and Nanaimo's Crow and Gate (the very best of the genre I've seen in BC). The food at Christie's is pretty basic pub fair, plenty of variety though not outstanding, and the service is solid - given that I've never been in there when it wasn't crowded to the rafters.

I like this place. It's at the centre of all things touristy, if you're a tourist, and has a good selection of beer and a decent menu. The food is good. In terms of the ambience, I like the wooden decor and that the interior design is in circles and squares. My only nit is the price. Bit expensive at over $7 for a 'sleeve' vs. a pint.

We are regulars here and have seen many changes in the upstairs pub. The view of the outer harbour and Ogden Point is tremendous. There's a real wood fire. The setting is great. The clientele are interesting - esp. the cruise ship passengers and the regulars bellying up to the bar with their own pint pots hanging in hooks. The food is very tasty and the menu shifts regularly, which is nice; they make attempts to vary the snacks, which we appreciate. There are 7-8 craft beer on, of which 1-2 is a seasonal. Some are served at room temp, English style; others are colder, Canadian style, which I prefer, but the beer is consistently good and the pub features caskivals and beer fests for afficianados. The only nit I have is the service. While we always get friendly enough service, it's always SLOW. Not sure if the waitresses are understaffed or the bartenders are slow or if the manager's not motivating enough, but we have never had really fast service.

We come here often. Once we had terrible service but now the service is quite good - not as fast as I'd like but solid. I like the ambience here, the wood and the hangings, and there's a snug out back which is where we hang out. If you sit in the main pub for lunch you get a great street view and the music fits the mood. There are 7-8 craft beer on tap, one of which is a seasonal. Some of the beer is served at room temp English style and some colder Canadian style; I prefer the latter and wish some of the others were colder but that's me. I also wish they'd serve the pints in chilled pint mugs rather than large warm pop glasses. The menu was for years very basic and expansive but they've now toned it down - which is good - and revitalized it. I still find the food overall pretty basic but they've been able to keep their prices competitive. They do breakfasts quite well.

We come to the pub side often. I love the interior design, very lofty with the wooden beams and light. Originally the seating was limited and the service a little slow, but in the past year both these things have radically improved. And we get good service always as regulars. There are 4-5 craft beers on at any time, one of which will be seasonal. My favourite seasonal is the Amber Artifact Lager; of the regulars, the pale ale is very clean with a bite for a summer day and the Beaver Brown is great when you come in out of the cold. The food is quite delicious, although pricey for a pub. I love the Aussie Pub Burger but at $17.50 and going up with each menu iteration it's too much for me.

VERY BAD choice of restaurant all around - not worth money
By cityqat of victoria (1 Review)
Submitted Sunday, January 1, 2012 - 3:59pm [Dine in]

Party of 3 on a quiet afternoon. There is nobody in the restaurant, yet we have to wait 30 minutes to be seated despite our reservation. I am a pollo vegetarian (chicken only) so this was of utmost priority.... there was ONE choice of dish on the menu for me, so I ordered it. I was handed my chicken, bit into it and believed it to be FISH. I called the waitress over to ask what it was? "Chicken. It's chicken." I ate it, then found out it was *definitely* fish (bones) and ran to the washroom to vomit. I called the waitress over again to point out the error and the results of that error (vomiting and sick). "You ate it. I will not take it off the bill." I paid an inordinate amount of money to be ill.

BAD SERVICE.
NOT WORTH MONEY AT ALL. I'D RATHER STARVE THAN GO BACK TO THIS RESTAURANT.

My wife and I went there for the first time on the 18th Dec and ordered two noodle boxes to go. It took too long to get our order for the amount of customers there, which wasn't many. When we got home, my wife found a plastic suction hook in her noodles~! We called them, and they said to bring it in and she would get a free meal.
We went in next day and ordered noodle soups. Again we were disappointed. The soup was not hot, ingredients were missing from those indicated on the menu - lime, basil. When I asked for it, I was told by the server, " Oh, most people don't want it". She was indifferent to our needs, and if I was the owner, she would be looking for another job.
For a new restaurant, I give it a year before they go broke, unless they change their approach to service, quality, and customer satisfaction. In one word: Terrible.

Ming's Restaurant1321 Quadra St., Victoria
Great place
By I like good service of Fraser Valley, BC (3 Reviews)
Submitted Friday, December 30, 2011 - 3:08pm [Dine in]

Having spent 4 nights in Victoria we had opportunity to eat at several establishments. Ming's is one that comes in near the top of our list for great places to eat.
One of the dishes we ordered was a Szechuan Kung-Po Hot N Spicy with shrimp. We stressed to our waiter that we really like the spices to be hot. I told him if it was hotter 'n the hubs of hades, then it could be one degree hotter still. It arrived as ordered. The taste was exquisite and the heat level just right.
Staff was attentive, courteous and well mannered. Not to mention their uniforms which were dressy and appealing to the eye.
Not expecting the portions to be as big as they were we also ordered chicken chow mein and a bowl of steamed rice. We couldn't eat it all so took the balance back to our suite at the hotel.
The surroundings were pleasant with a nicely broken up layout which keeps patrons from feeling like being in a sardine can as some restaurants are prone to do. The aquariums were a nice distraction and very well kept with some nice specimens of various kinds of fish.
We would return to Ming's in a heartbeat and offer it a very high recommendation.
Thanks all you people at Ming's for a wonderful dining experience.

My wife and I decided to spend Christmas in Victoria this year

On Monday Dec. 26 we wound up having a great breakfast at the Beagle Pub. Another place I would highly recommend.
We were surprised to find breakfast dishes on the menu.
I had an omelette (spinach & mushrooms) and my wife had eggs with sausage and bacon. Huge portions and great taste.
The thing we noticed that set this establishment apart from all the others was the way our waitress addressed us as “folks. Much nicer than the usual insolent address of “ you guys” I’m not sure if that is house policy but if it isn’t it should be.
Thanks Beagle staff. Keep up the good work.

Azuma Sushi615 Yates St, Victoria
Sushi vs. Frozen Pizza
By mrniceguy of victoria b.c (1 Review)
Submitted Friday, December 23, 2011 - 7:28pm [Dine in]

Heres the play-by-play

3:00pm. Long day of Christmas shopping, wow am I ever hungry, I'll just google sushi in Victoria, hopefully one will be open.

3:02pm. All searches come back negative except for Azuma sushi, therefore Azuma it is!

3:05pm. I walk into Azuma, I think to myself, this is really nice, have they ever put a lot of work into this place. -Please wait to be seated- said the sign

3:15pm. I look back at the sign to see if I maybe read the sign wrong, nope. I look around there are empty tables everywhere.

3:17pm. Oh how wonderful, my date and I are situated right between two very young couples. I feel out of place because both sets of couples are talking/texting on their cell phones. Oh, what's that I hear? *No! I told you I dont like him, I'm with my new date right now, fuck off!* You go girl, that's exactly what I was thinking.

3:20pm. How did this cold cup of tea get infront of me? I look around but see no one, someone must be practising there magic skills in here.

3:25pm. I feel the warmth of this friendly waiter in here. I know she must have a thing for me because she doesn't want to make eye contact, I dont blame her seeing as how I'm out on this date. "Oh hi I'm doing gre.... Oh I'm sorry, yes to start off could I have *this*, and for my entree I would like *that* and *and some of those*" We kept our conversation to a minimum, save the small talk for later, when she wasn't so busy with her other two tables.

3:35pm I bowl of soup arrives, the waitress said it came with what I ordered, or so I assumed. I couldn't understand her, I think she finished her sentence while she walked 10 ft away from me. Maybe something smelled bad?

3:36pm My taste buds hurt, what did I just put in my mouth?

3:40pm One portion of my entree is here, I'm excited, but where is my appetizer? My waitress must be one of those desert before dinner kinda gals, I like that, it's spunky.

3:45pm Another entree arrives, I don't recognize it. Said it went with my soup. I'm confused now, did the entree come with the soup or the soup come with the entree, either way I didn't order either of them. Here's my chance to return that liquid thing on my table, I don't know what it is, tried googling it but nothing came up. My waitress politely accepts my return of this mysterious entree and the unknown substance. She didn't seemed surprised, I think she's heard it before. I'm trying to come to terms with how this could have happened, I mean her not looking at me meant she liked me, right, Right?

3:53pm I'm done my entree just as my appetizer arrives, perfecting timing! I bet my waitress is impressed at how fast I can eat one roll of sushi.

3:54pm I remember I'm on date now, "Hi Hunny, how's your sushi? Oh you don't like it.... Ya I dont think it's suppose to come completely unrolled on the plate, but I'm no sushi expert, maybe we should notify the waitress?"

3:58pm Very sneaky! She slides past us without making a sound

4:00pm I caught you! I knew she couldn't escape me forever. My waitress seems to have the giggles as I explain the problem with my date's sushi, boy am I ever good with the ladies. She explains to me that a new sushi chef is behind the counter now, apparently much better at rolling sushi, but my date politely declines. You know what they say "wait twenty minutes and you won't be hungry anymore". I guess this holds true even if you haven't started to eat yet.

4:03pm My date complements that her pop taste great. I'm happy for her, she's enjoying it a lot!

4:10pm Everything is gone from the table, my waitress asked if that will be all, I feel like her opinion on me has changed. But I can't quite put my finger on it. I avoid notifying her of my missing food that was supposed to come with my entree, I think she knew tho.

4:12pm The cheque arrives, I eat both chocolates on the bill tray, boy do I love those chocolates, best thing they have put on the table yet!

4:12pm The waitress shows up quite fast with the debit machine. She is being very nice now, a little too nice in fact, seems a little fishy, I contemplate the possibility that she is finally attempting to make her move on me. I look at my date, she is paying for us, very 21st century I think. Maybe I should probably just stay with the one I have now.

4:13pm I leave the restaurant, I'm in a haze, I say bye to my date, I don't know if I'll see her again. Still hungry, but nowhere to go, I guess I'll just head home and throw in a pizza.

5:30pm Mmmm frozen pizza. The bus ride was long and lonely, I did done a lot of soul searching. I write done my thoughts on todays outing so other hungry people will be able to avoid this place and more importantly, frozen pizza.

Overpriced and Under-delivered
By 24kjer of Victoria, BC (1 Review)
Submitted Wednesday, December 21, 2011 - 4:06pm [Take-out]

At 8 bucks for a Panini and Chips, one could reasonably expect some kind of value. Not so at Coffee Bahama!

The Chicken Panini contained very little in the way of anything except bread and lettuce, making for a very skimpy sandwich, and the chips.... well, I actually went back in to get the chips that supposedly came with my overpriced sandwich, having not noticed two very small chips tucked in with the sandwich.

The staff working the counter seemed surprised that I would think this was anything but a side of chips, and nothing further was offered.

All in all, this was a very disappointing experience, and Coffee Bahama, despite being the most convenient location for me to grab lunch, will never get my business again.

I decided to try this restaurant for take out. This was my first experience and I won't be going back.
The prices compared to my favourite restaurant downtown were extremely high, not posted on the website so when you got there to pick up your order you had no idea what to expect to pay.
The food was warm. Sushi should never be warm. I'm worried I'm going to be sick. The rice was warm, the fish was warm, the Sunomono salad was expensive and lacking in content. I'm sure it was canned crab meat!!! If you want a good experience with sushi, save your money and go somewhere else. I'm so disappointed, I won't ever be recommending this place to anyone. Probably the fact there were no patrons in the restaurant should be a clue.
YUCK!

Submitted Saturday, December 10, 2011 - 11:09pm [Take-out]

My wife and I just moved into this neighborhood and decided to give this place a try. What a mistake that turned out to be. Here's what happened.

We called in a pick up order at dinner time, and this is where the fun began.

They'd never heard of agedashi tofu or gomae. They didn't know what a bento box or bento combo was. This should have been enough warning for us to say no thanks and do something else, but we persisted. We ordered a cali roll, a spicy scallop roll, chicken teriaki, veggie tempura, and a seaweed salad.

After we got home, we realized they'd failed to put the salad in the bag. The tempura was burnt. The teriaki was chicken and mushrooms in a thick sweet sauce over sticky white rice. The california roll was tiny and mis-shapen. The rice on the rolls was not good. The scallop roll was disgusting and fishy, to the point where we couldn't eat it.

Even if the food had been good, the price would have been a bit on the high side, although I do find that most prices on the island are a bit higher than the lower mainland.

Not going back.

A very rude encounter with the server
By jentansy of victoria b.c (1 Review)
Submitted Tuesday, December 6, 2011 - 11:26pm [Dine in]

We were at a recent staff Christmas Party held at Milestone's Grill and Bar at the Inner Harbour, Victoria. Like most Christmas Party, things can get pretty busy. When the servers started serving the main course, we noticed one of our friend sitting on our table didn't have his meal. My boyfriend stood up and called one of the server to ask why he was'nt served. The server raised his voice at my boyfriend and trying to blame our friend saying he was drunk. Fifteen minutes passed when everyone had almost finished their dinner, our friend's main course had finally arrived. However, they served him the wrong order. He ordered steak but they served him a plate of salmon. Then again, my boyfriend tried to call one of the server's attention and unfortunately, that server was the one close by. My boyfriend complained saying it was the wrong order and the server began yelling at my boyfriend. The server's response was really inappropriate and uncalled for since all we were trying to do was follow up an order. We didn't want to make a scene and ruin the party so we just kept in silence. It is a very disappointing experience for us to see servers who cannot control their temper.

Every time I have gone here the service has been amazing. I wanted to say this first off because the staff here constantly impress me. The servers are really busy every time I come in but they all seem to be very aware of their sections and always acknowledge everyone when they walk by with a smile or a meal suggestion. These little gestures along with timely and efficient service is something that really stands out about 5th Street for me.

I love the layout of the menus it is great because I am generally on a budget and this helps out immensely. The quesadilla is the best ever, I love the flavors and the ingredient combo, soo soo good. I had the coconut prawns the other day there and although they were really good I was sad because there were not very many prawns, I was left wanting more!!! The desserts there were really good, I cant remember what we had but I do remember loving it so thats a good thing right?

Thank you for being one of my favorites 5th street, for a lot of different reasons.

I love the Pink Bicycle, I have had many great experiences there and compared to other burger restaurants this one is the best. The prices are a little high but the food quality and flavor are SO GOOD. This is a once a month sort of place for me and I look forward to going weeks in advance. I like to stratigize the time I go as it is very tricky to get in with out having to wait in line (before 6pm works for me). I also like to check out their facebook or twitter to see what they have on special for the week, as some are AMAZING while others are MEH...

This is my fail safe plan of action, feel free to copy my methods, they are tried and true. Other recommendations for this place: try the regular cheeseburger with sliced pickles as an add on, they are FREE and they are awesome.

Slick, comfortable, clean and feel-good. Nice staff that work well together as a team.

Menu has great variety without being weird. Lots of nice vegetarian and gluten free items. Obviously they went to a great deal of effort to use locally produced products. I support that as do many.

I had the first burger on the menu. A good-old cheddar cheese burger (top quality natural beef, 5 year aged cheddar, nice whole grain bun) with a generous side salad topped with blue cheese, apples, almond pralines and honey vinaigrette dressing. No strange seasonings, no additives. Real food that tasted delicious and left me feeling good all afternoon.

I was surprised how fast I got my food considering the restaurant is new and was packed with a steady stream of incoming people to replace everyone that was leaving; and considering the food is all hand-crafted (they even make their own ketchup and all other sauces/dips). The time on my parking meter receipt was 1:09, I had my food by 1:35. That's 24 minutes from my car to the bar to the burger in my face.

Important to remember: You need to allow busy restaurants reasonable time to prepare hand made foods which are cooked to order (especially when the restaurant is full and/or everyone arrives at the same time). 20 minutes is not an unreasonable length of time to wait; burger patties need a minimum of 10-15 minutes on a grill. If that is too long for you, mediocre restaurants that pre-cook their patties may be more appropriate.

Regarding the prices..... they are comparable to "cookie-cutter" corporate chains..... but the quality is far superior. They also have many dine in specials every night after 9pm.

I had high hopes for this place, and my expectations were exceeded. I will return many times and work my way through the entire menu.

Nice work Bin 4! Thank you.
