I live close by and have tried many items at Fol Epi. The fresh baked bread is to die for, they usually have a selection of baguette and rye. The bread is 8.00 a loaf, so not a bargain, but worth it once in awhile if you ask me. The macroons here are amazing and authentic, and come in many flavours. The pastries are delicate and come in perfect portions, pair any baked good with a coffee from Discovery Coffee right next to Fol Epi and enjoy a relaxing morning or afternoon sitting on the patio in the sun.
I have been to this hole in the wall in Esquimalt a few times and have never been disappointed. Their donair meats are authentic and stuffed inside large warm pitas with veggies and delicious sauces. Very reasonably priced and I haven't found a better place to pick up a donair and greek salad for take out. Service is fine, not overly freindly, but I think it kind of adds to the personality of the place. If you want a nice place to sit down, this is not the place for you.
Owners are always eager to serve you and they are friendly with lots of personality. The food is authentic and consistently flavourful and delicious. Portions are large and prices are low. Caravanas has some of the best tabbouleh, falafel, and chicken donair plates that I have had, and all of the sauces and ingredients taste homemade.
I have been to Buon Amici's many times since its very close to my house, their espresso is great and I find that their lattes and mochas are way better than starbucks or serious coffee. They also have delicious muffins, baked goods and breakfast pitas. Its a nice quiet spot to sit and read and enjoy a snack or coffee.
I was very disappointed with my online ordering experience yesterday. I ordered 3 items: the $7 jalapeno appy, the $8 eggplant appy and the $17 souvlaki entree (for 2 meat skewers). 2 minutes later I get a call from the restaurant to inform me that the online souvlaki listing was wrong: it only comes with one skewer. And when the order arrived, I was charged $9.50, $8.95 and $17.95 respectively for my 3 items (and the Greek salad had no dressing on it. When I called to discuss the price discrepancies, I was told that they were not going to honour their online prices. They lost $200+/year of my business for $4.40 - I hope it was worth it.
We go out for Indian often in Victoria, this place is great. The food has consistently been good, and the atmosphere is nice (which sometime can be sacrificed when going out for indian food). Service was great, wait time was minimal, prices were decent, and the butter chicken and pakoras were really good.
We have been going to the Beacon Hill Drive in since 1967. In the last 15 years we have been going every Sunday, except for Xmas when it has been closed.
We noticed the change that seem to coincide with the change in management. The quality and quantity has taken a real turn for the worse.
We do not recommend this drive in restaurant to any one.
We had a family get together on February 17th. Five adults and two children under five. We ordered two children's meals at $10 each plus numerous other adult menu items .... platter, appies, one entree, salad, etc. I was told I could use coupons when I made my reservation. The total bill was $179.75. I asked if I could use one of the coupons for the childrens two meals, which would have meant a $5.00 saving. Big deal! Anyway, the manager told me "no" since they don't make any money on children's meals. Good grief, the children's meals were a hamburger and macaroni. The food service seemed slow, however we were enjoying a family visit, so this was not an issue. Food was definitely not anything other then mediocore. The location is good. Victoria foodies will definitely give this restaurant a hands down.
I had a GC and decided to use it last night to order take out and my goodness was I glad I didn't spend my own hard earned money on such terrible food. It was a disaster. Not only did i have to wait 10 mins for the staff to figure out how to cash my GC my food tasted like crap and was freezing cold. My boyfriend ordered a burger which is pretty simple and shouldnt be that hard to make taste good and it was terrible. I had a pulled pork sandwich that was dry and nasty. We both ordered yam fries. Firstly, the yams were not peeled before hand- LAZYNESS.... they were ice cold and they were burnt. All in all an terrible experience and I don't reccomend going to this resturant to waste your money.
Hope they pick up their socks and make it a good place to dine. Looks like bad reviews since they have moved to Downtown Victoria.
I have to admit I was nervous going out of my comfort zone and trying this place out but i found out the restaurant was down to earth great food and the servers were so upbeat and friendly I know its pricier then some burger places but they are way better than any place ive ever been to before
First time I ever went to Floyds Diner on Yates Have to say I had a mixed experience. The looks in the place when I got in was a bit run down from the inside not to mention was not a bit impressed with a Santa that was dressed up as a Canuck fan waiting for me inside the only thing was missing was a clownhead out to talk my order into. I ordered a American Idol Eggs Benny which was really good but I really waited along time and with the price a bit high it was a bit dissapointing The people in there were freindly so Im going to try them one more time maybe they just had a bad day
I actually just joined this site to warn people about this place. Had dinner there last night . Never felt more ripped off after leaving a restaurant. For the money they're charging I expected a lot more. Not a hard , cold triangle of rice, two hard carrots, two hard beans , and a little bowl of seafood for 35.00. With the 15.00 $ appy for a total of 50.00 . For 52.00 you could go to Matisse for a 4 course dinner , and have a real dinning experience. Trust me, get the bread pudding for dessert.
Ordered calamari to start. Other tables winced as it was delivered. Had two bites and returned. Tasted and smelled like it had been left on the dock in the sun. Another table thanked us for sending it back. Called manager on it he were told that it was the cumin spice. Really? Then he brought a bag of calamari to prove its freshness. With the bag closed across the table, that was enough. Just glad to leave. Read other reviews and look for another restaurant in Sidney!
We love sushi. We've eaten the best and the worst over the years across the country. Last weekend we were stuck in Victoria due to weather and decided to order take out sushi from Chiba Sushi. It calls itself "the best sushi place in town". It isn't. This place should be torn down and sown with salt. We arrived and place an order for over $100 worth of sushi and sashimi. We waited...and waited...and waited. No offer of tea, water...nothing. We stopped a young waitress after the 15 minute mark and asked what was up. She said "it's not my fault that they're slow". Wrong answer. The restaurant was less than 1/3 full on a Sunday night at 7PM. At the half hour mark I asked to speak to the manager...the original dragon lady...and she screamed at me...that's right...screamed, saying "I can't hurry the cooks...not my fault...and so on." This is in front of customers who had just walked in as well. Finally after about 40 minutes we got our food. When we opened it at our hotel room it was dreadful. The sashimi as old...bordering on going bad. The portions we small (and I'm being generous here). They gave us one set of chop sticks. Folks, go anywhere...even food courts...and you'll get better sushi...we even had better sushi on the ferry back to Vancouver. STAY AWAY from Chiba Sushi!
A small place, has just a few tables for eat in dining. Friendly service by the owner, I enjoy eating in. Clean premises. Great hand punched thick cut fries. I find thick cut fries can be undercooked but these are cooked to perfection, excellent taste. The portions are generous, the batter on the fish tender, tasty, and crispy. The best fish & chips in Victoria for my money.
Very friendly service by the owner, thick cut "hand punched" fries, cooked well. I'm leery of large fires because they can be cooked unevenly. These are crispy on the outside and cooked through. The fish is excellent with a a batter that is tasty and not not thick, and not greasy. Good value. I usually eat in, just a few tables, clean premises. The best fish & chips in Victoria for my money.
Just bought a take out portion of lamb stew. It was 80% bone and fat. Had to wrestle with the dish to get every bit of lamb meat out of it. Was still very, very hungry. Don't they know that we don't eat bone and many of us don't like gristle??? Im not going back
Beware of Customized Cakes.
We used to love Pink Sugar. In fact when we first bought a tray of their cakes we found it incredible that they were vegan; they tasted so good! We remained faithful customers and passed on many good reviews to friends and colleagues. We even brought overseas visitors there to sample what great food Victoria has. Well, things have certainly changed in the past couple of years and their quality has steadily decreased in terms of taste and flavour. (Their customer service has never been great, but you tend to overlook that for good food sometimes, right?) Numerous Groupon vouchers to sell their stale, bland goods have been circulated recently, hoping to drum up more business. That should have been my another warning.
So, against my better judgement we had to go with ordering our son's birthday cake with them. After previously looking at Ooh La La and loving what they do, we discovered they were closed and couldn't get the cake made in time. Pink Sugar sprang to mind as we had never had a customised cake before - maybe they were better? With more thought and attention to detail paid to them? Let's take the risk. They used to be good!
After confirming our requirements and stating what we would like for such a special occasion in our lives, Pink Sugar assured us that the cake would be made and in time. To cut a long and disappointing story short, the cake was dreadful. It was late, so my husband had to rush out just before the birthday gathering to collect it. I thought that kind of understandable, thinking the cake's appearance would make up for the delay.
Plain, cracked icing and characters unsecured to the sponge so they fell over, when it arrived home in my husbands arms I was so sad. We didn't even want photos of it to remember such a lovely day. But such is life and we wanted to speak with the manager for feedback. Feedback that would be beneficial to their business that this was not good enough for the amount we were charged. We didn't expect money back, but hoped we could spare other parents the disappointment of such trash for the money paid. We left messages and was assured we would be called back by the manager. She never bothered. We then emailed them with sad looking pictures of this cake, he again, never received a reply. Maybe the manager is deluded into thinking it was a one off (no, it isn't from what I have heard), maybe she is plain lazy (likely). Either way, she is definitely unthoughtful.
So I would suggest you only go here if they have a special offer and you are desperate. Definitely not for customized cakes. They are not worth the money and seriously need to re-evaluate their business plan, their staff, their management and certainly the quality of their cakes. As they do not ever reply to phone-calls or emails from customers, I hope you guys out there never encounter any issues with them. You certainly would not want to have a conversation with their staff behind the counter like I will have to, they are miserable and sometimes, damn scary.
I don't like giving bad reviews, I prefer to speak to the business themselves. But they don't want to know that this quality of service is unacceptable, especially for special occasions. People have told me not to bother with Pink Sugar anymore, I wish I listened. This is one place I will be telling friends, family and colleagues to steer away from now. Lesson learned.
Go to Ooh La La instead. Lovely friendly people, stunning cakes and great service.
I used to frequent My Thai when they first opened, drawn to the great food and reasonable prices. I moved away for a few years and decided to try it again after moving back to Victoria. Wow, how things have changed.
I was first struck by just how dirty the place has gotten. There was dirt and cobwebs all over the place, the carpets were absolutely filthy, and the place did not smell very good. They also haven't painted the place since it opened and it shows. The tables had chips of paint missing all over them and looked like something out of a Salvation Army furniture section. They also had graffiti all over the front sign, which they hadn't bothered to clean or replace.
My wife wanted to leave at this point, but I remembered the food being good so we hung in there to order food. Big mistake. While the curry was not terrible, the pad thai was burnt and disgusting. The shrimp that it came with also smelled pretty bad and were not fresh. The only thing I didnt mind was the white rice.
The meal was over $50 by the end, but was not worth half of that. There is a reason the place was empty for the dinner service.
My friend and I typically get together once per month at Moon Under Water (awesome) and decided to give a new place a try. I my 20+ years of being in Victoria I had never been into any establishment that had occupied this space. I had no expectations and was very pleasantly surprised. The service was extremely attentive despite the fact that it was busy. The owner or management (both?) also seemed to err on the side of caution with regards to staff - there were lots and they were all keeping busy. On Friday nights they pump up the music - not my usual thing - but we were still able to have a conversation and really enjoy the night. My friend ordered a burger and I ordered the wings. Two basic staples you need to get right. His burger had a beautiful bun (brioche perhaps?), the fries were perfect and the patty clearly made in house. My wings were large, very tasty (salt and pepper) and crispy. the blue cheese dressing wasn't too strong either. These are not 25 Cent wings! Anyway I will be a local at The Local - thanks for a great night.
